40. Ben Amos
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/supernan_17/amos2.jpg
Birthdate: 10 Apr 1990
Birthplace: Macclesfield, England
Position: Goalkeeper
Joined United: 01 Jul 2006
United Debut: 23 Sept 2008 v Boro (H)
Ben Amos is a talented young goalkeeper who has been capped by England at youth level.
The tall, Macclesfield-born custodian has worked his way through the Old Trafford ranks since the age of 11, and joined the club's Academy in July 2006. He quickly established himself in Paul McGuinness' Under-18s side in the 2006/07 campaign, and made his Reserves debut in November 2007.
Ben's stature within the United ranks was underlined when he made two impressive appearances in the first team's 2008/09 pre-season campaign, and a full debut wasn't long in coming.
Amos turned in a commanding display as United overcame Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup in September 2008. Having convinced United's coaching staff that he has the skill and temperament for first team football, Ben was picked as a late replacement for the injured Ben Foster to travel as part of the successful Club World Cup campaign.
A keen learner, Ben has his sights set on regular first team involvement. "Hopefully I’ll fight it out for a first-team place," he says. "That’s my aim, to play for the club. I wouldn’t be here otherwise."

Ben biding his time

He may have three top-class goalkeepers in front of him, but young stopper Ben Amos is happy to play the waiting game and garner as much experience as he can from Edwin van der Sar and co.
The 19-year-old has worked his way through the Old Trafford ranks since the age of 11 and joined the club's Academy in July 2006.
It wasn’t long before he made his debut for the Reserves and his impressive displays for the second string led to a place on the first team’s pre-season tour of South Africa in the summer of 2008.
Ben featured twice and was later handed his competitive debut in the Carling Cup win over Middlesbrough in September the same year.
He feels he has made big strides forward in the last 12 months and is fully intent on maintaining his progress.
“When you train with players of the calibre of Edwin, Ben [Foster] and Tomasz [Kuszczak], you have to be at the top of your game every day," he told ManUtd.com.
"You continually pick things up and I really feel I’ve improved a lot of aspects of my game in the last year.
“Playing for the first team is what I’ve always dreamt of and it’s what you train for every day. There’s no better feeling than being involved with some of the best players in the world and you just want to be part of it all the time.
“Old Trafford is the kind of stage everyone wants to play on and even though it might be a couple of years off yet hopefully it’ll happen one day.”
With competition for places particularly fierce within United’s goalkeeping ranks, Amos is more than willing to temporarily hone his skills elsewhere.
“I expect I’ll go out on loan at some stage to play some first team football,” explained Amos. “I think that’s what I need to take my game to the next level now.
“You come up against good players at reserve level, but when you go out on loan you’re playing proper men’s football. It’s not necessarily about playing nice stuff, it’s about getting the results you need.
“It tends to bring a lot of young players on and help them mature and hopefully that will be the case with me.”

As one Ben leaves, another is given his chance. Reds goalkeeper coach Eric Steele evaluates United’s newly-promoted third-choice stopper….
When Ben Foster signed for Birmingham, a lot of United fans expected Sir Alex to sign another goalkeeper. Instead, he’s promoted Ben Amos from within…
It’s a big vote of confidence for the boy and it’s promising because he’s another lad who’s come through the Academy system. Ben’s been at the club now for nine years, so it’s a nice reward for him.
He’s only 20 years old. Is he ready?
The manager and myself have seen enough in his ability to suggest he is. We’ve thrown the gauntlet down, so it’s up to him now to fulfil his potential. The challenge is for us to continue his development, but also for him to take the opportunity and make the most of it.
Not many goalkeepers move through the ranks at Old Trafford…
Yes, it’s a long time since 1985 when Gary Walsh came through – he was the last locally-reared goalkeeper to play for United. But don’t forget Ben’s already tasted first-team action, back in September 2008 when he played against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup. Unfortunately for him he hasn’t had another chance since then but he certainly showed promise during that game.
What are Ben’s biggest attributes?
Physically, he’s a good size at 6ft 3 in. He’s a good shot-stopper, distributes the ball well and likes to organise his defenders. If you’re going to be a Manchester United goalkeeper you have to show a keenness and a willingness to appreciate good football – you need to know when to play the ball short and when to play the ball long. Ben’s certainly developed that side of his game over the last 18 months and he’s been encouraged to play the ball out of defence when he’s lined up for the Reserves.
How did his recent loan spell pan out?
He only arrived back in Manchester last week after a good spell in Norway with Molde FK. He played first-team football there for two months, which has done him the power of good. He will have learnt an awful lot out there about himself and about how to marshal defences and become an organiser. That was another step in his development and now we feel he’s ready to come back and take up the challenge of performing alongside Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.
How vital are loan spells, especially for goalkeepers?
They’re big learning experiences. It helps players experience first-team football and get into the routine of preparing for big games every week. If they stay on the fringes at United, at a club where you could be involved in four competitions and there’s a lot of squad rotation, it can be difficult to get into a rhythm. The loan spells help replicate what conditions are like once you break through into that first XI. That said, he’ll probably find he’ll learn more during some of the training sessions at United next season than he possibly might do if he went out on loan to a lower-league side.
So when will we see Ben in action?
Ben’s going to get a lot more exposure now that he’s part of the first-team squad and he’ll join us on the American tour. He’ll play games out there. As for next season, I’d like to think he’ll play more of a part and that’s the whole idea of this promotion. Hopefully he might gain some experience and exposure in matches like the pre-season friendlies and the Carling Cup. That’s probably a realistic target for 2010/11.
You don’t expect him to be challenging Edwin van der Sar just yet?
No, no. Goalkeepers develop later anyway, so he’s got plenty of time. That said, in football these days your number three can be your number one very quickly. It only takes a red card and an injury to change everything.

Manchester United have thrown down the challenge to goalkeeper Ben Amos.
The 20-year-old stopper is now the Reds' third choice behind Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak now Ben Foster has left for Birmingham.
Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele told www.manutd.com: "The manager and myself have seen enough in his ability to suggest he is (ready). We’ve thrown the gauntlet down, so it’s up to him now to fulfil his potential. The challenge is for us to continue his development, but also for him to take the opportunity and make the most of it."
Amos, an imposing figure at 6ft 3in, has already played for the first team when he faced Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup in 2008.
He has recently been on loan in Norway at Molde FK and Steele added: "He will have learnt an awful lot out there about himself and about how to marshal defences and become an organiser.
"That was another step in his development and now we feel he’s ready to come back and take up the challenge of performing alongside Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak."
Amos will join the Reds on their pre-season America tour and is expected to feature there.

Ben Amos is in Rocky Balboa country with United and ready to punch, and save, his way up the Reds’ goalkeeping ladder.
United face Philadelphia Union in Philly on Wednesday in their second game of their trip and after Edwin van der Sar played the full 90 minutes of the pre-season opener against Celtic in Toronto, 20-year-old keeper Amos will get game time soon on the Reds’ tour.
The Macclesfield-born goalkeeper has been promoted to Sir Alex Ferguson’s No 3 behind Van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.
Fergie has been linked with numerous senior keepers like Schalke’s German World Cup No 1 Manuel Neuer, CSKA Moscow’s Russia first-choice Igor Akinfeev, Rene Adler of Bayer Leverkusen, France and Lyon’s Hugo Lloris, and Holland’s keeper in South Africa, Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg.
The speculation reached fever pitch when Ben Foster moved to Birmingham City at the start of the summer.
It appeared Fergie would dip into the transfer market to fill the void with another experienced man who’d also be ready to pick up Van der Sar’s gloves if he retires in 2011.
But there was no buying and the Reds boss moved swiftly after Foster’s exit to St Andrews to bring his senior goalkeeper department back up to a three-strong unit by naming Academy product Amos as his new third choice.
Naturally, the young goalkeeper was delighted with his promotion to the big-time.
“It was nice for the manager to come out and give me a public vote of confidence over the summer and say I’d be part of the first team set-up this season,” said Amos.
“It’s up to me to deliver now. He’s put his faith in me and I want to pay him back. Working with Edwin and Tomasz is fantastic for me and I learn from them every day. It’s quite a young squad on tour, but there’s so much we can learn from the senior players on the trip.
“Even just being around them and seeing how they handle themselves helps us, especially the foreign lads who haven’t grown up at United.
“The tour has been great so far and I’m really enjoying the experience. We’re visiting some great places and working hard in training to get ourselves ready for the new season. So it’s been good so far.
“The training is quite intense and the heat has been unbelievable, especially in Chicago. But you have to adapt and work hard and we’ve been doing some good work during the sessions.
“The manager is always looking to the future and is keen to give the youngsters their chance. Hopefully I’ll get mine over the next couple of weeks.”
Old Trafford’s goalkeeping coach Eric Steele had no doubts about backing Amos to make the step up to the first team squad from the reserves.
“The manager and myself have seen enough in his ability to suggest he is ready,” Steele said.
“We’ve thrown the gauntlet down, so it’s up to him now to fulfil his potential. The challenge is for us to continue his development, but also for him to take the opportunity and make the most of it.
“Physically, he’s a good size at 6ft 3 in. He’s a good shot-stopper, distributes the ball well and likes to organise his defenders.

Amos' unlikely path to United nets
November 30, 2010 | MEN
Manchester United youngster Ben Amos has admitted he only became a goalkeeper by chance.
The 20-year-old was happily playing outfield for his local Sunday league team in Cheshire when they found themselves a man down.
As the tallest player in the team Amos was an obvious choice to go in goal and he made such an impression that he ended up at Crewe, then on to Manchester United, for whom he could start in tonight's Carling Cup quarter-final with West Ham.
"I haven't always been a 'keeper," he said.
"I fancied myself as a bit of a player. I played outfield for my school and my local Sunday league team.
"The standard was obviously not as good so I could hold my own.
"But I was at Bollington United and we didn't have a 'keeper one day. I was the biggest so they put me in goal and that was it."
United mad, Amos always paid special attention to the performances of his hero, Peter Schmeichel.
Now he is about to come across another Denmark international in a professional capacity following the capture of Anders Lindegaard.
Although Sir Alex Ferguson has signalled time on Edwin van der Sar's stellar career at the end of the season, from January, there will be more competition at United's Carrington training complex, which Amos admits is not always easy to deal with.
"Games in the first team don't come round too often when you are the number three 'keeper," said the Macclesfield-born youngster.
"There is only one position and we train a lot.
"Every year I set a target because you have got to keep yourself motivated.
"You also have to be patient because a goalkeeper's career is different.
"Edwin is still playing now. You have to look at him as an example when the temptation is to look at players your own age, who are involved a lot more."
Amos certainly intends to squeeze every drop of knowledge from Van der Sar while he still has the chance, even if he appreciates his own analogy might not go down well with the veteran Dutchman.
"It is a little bit like training with your dad," he laughed.
"I don't think he will appreciate that but I am chewing at his ear all the time, trying to get bits of advice.
"He is very open and he says what he thinks, which is just what you need."
Winners of this tournament for the past two seasons, United could make as many as 11 changes from the side that demolished Blackburn at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez among those expected to be involved.

Ben Amos will be hoping to earn another rare start against West Ham this evening in the Carling Cup. He’s been talking to us about what it’s like being a young goalkeeper carving out a career at a top club…
How do you stay focused every day when you’re not playing all the time?
There’s only one position and we train a lot, training everyday without playing is difficult, but you’ve just got to keep yourself motivated and make sure you’re ready and available when you’re needed. Every year I set a target, and the next game is always a target for me. They don’t come round too often being the number three keeper, so I’ve just got to make sure I’m ready and I’m peaking when those games come around.
You have to be patient, then…
The patience helps when you know goalkeepers have a longer career; look at Edwin and how he’s still playing now. The temptation is to look around you at players that are 17 and 18 and they’re playing. Kiko Macheda is a year younger than me and he’s involved a lot more at the moment, so the temptation is to get a bit frustrated. But you’ve got to take everything in context and, with the position that I play in, that’s the reason why I’m not playing.
Edwin van der Sar is double your age. He’s old enough to be your dad, but what’s it like training with someone as experienced as he is?
I’ve said a few times that it is a little bit like training with your dad, yeah. I don’t think he’ll appreciate that, but he’s great. I’m chewing at his ear all the time, trying to get bits of advice. He’s very open and he says what he thinks, so it’s great.
Who were your goalkeeping idols growing up?
When I was growing up Schmeichel was playing, so he’s a big icon, a goalkeeping icon. He’s a good role model because of his presence. That was something that really struck home with me, how he was as a person on the pitch. I’d probably say him. I was Man United mad, so I didn’t really look to any other teams or anything, it was just all about United.
You played in the last round at Old Trafford. Was it easier playing in front of a home crowd compared to, say tonight, when you’re at an away ground?
I don’t think about it that way. Any game in the first team is a game in the first team, so that’s how I approach it. Whether it’s Old Trafford or not, it’s not really an issue. The atmosphere is something you’ve got to handle. I can’t see it being a problem to me personally at all, and especially not to the other players, the experienced players - they deal with it every week. It’ll be a lively crowd, their stands are close to the pitch and it’s a really tight ground, but it won’t be a problem.
Being a local lad, any time you play for the first-team must be a proud moment?
It is, especially as I’ve supported the club since I knew about football. But when you’re here every day, you don’t really think about it too much. You’re used to it and you’re in there doing well and you just see yourself as one of the team.

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos eyes loan exit after Champions League bow
By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 8:43 PM on 8th December 2010
Ben Amos is hoping to build on his Champions League debut for Manchester United by spending a short period away from Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old was handed a surprise start by Sir Alex Ferguson for the home draw with Valencia, which sealed United's status as Group C winners.
Although Ferguson felt Amos took a little bit of time to get used to his surroundings, the Red Devils chief was satisfied with what he saw in the second-half.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/12/08/article-1336887-0C63DF5B000005DC-839_634x347.jpg
The youngster made a couple of decent saves to ensure United collected the point they required but know faces a spell on the sidelines as Ferguson relies on Edwin van der Sar to crank up the pressure in the Premier League.
With Tomasz Kuszczak's future uncertain and Anders Lindegaard due to start training with his new team-mates next week, Amos realises even getting on the bench is going to be tough.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/12/08/article-1336887-01DA03CC000004B0-525_306x445.jpg
Which is why he feels it would be in the interests of everyone concerned if he spent a spell away on loan.
'It is crucial for a young goalkeeper to get a good run of games,' he said.
'That is how you get experience. The only way of doing that is by going out and playing regularly somewhere. If it means me going out on loan somewhere, that might be great.'
Ferguson had a chat with Amos in the summer after deciding the Macclesfield-born youngster could fill the goalkeeping vacancy created by Ben Foster's move to Birmingham.
Lindegaard's arrival swells the contingent to four and although it is widely anticipated Kuszczak will move on next month, it is by no means certain.
In any case, Amos has seen how the careers of Foster and Joe Hart have developed recently by getting regular games.
And while he is lacking experience, he wonders whether now would be a good time to get some.
'The manager told me what he thought of me at the end of last season, which was great motivation,' he said.
'I was grateful for that. When someone of the stature of Sir Alex Ferguson has that belief in you. It gives you great confidence.
'I don't know what is going to happen with Tomasz or any other goalkeeper at the club.
'But, if I am being honest, a loan move is something I would like.
'I would benefit a lot from it. Now that we are out of the Carling Cup there are fewer opportunities for me to play anyway and it could be just the thing to take me to the next level.'
Although Ferguson claimed to have decided a fortnight ago that Amos would feature last night, the player himself only learned last week, after Kuszczak had got the nod for the Carling Cup defeat at West Ham.
Remarkably, Amos, who became a keeper by accident when his Sunday league team found themselves a man short one morning, was not affected by nerves.
If anything, he was worried because he was too laid-back. 'I felt calm,' he said. 'I wasn't nervous beforehand at all.
'My confidence is growing the more I improve. Whether it is 70,000, 100,000 or 30,000 when you are playing, it doesn't make a big difference.'
Nevertheless, he headed straight off to see his parents after emerging from the dressing room, relaying their pride at watching their son in action.

New United first-teamer considering shock early exit
Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos is considering his future at Old Trafford following the recent signings of Anders Lindegaard and David De Gea.
In preparation for the retirement for Edwin Van der Sar, Sir Alex Ferguson brought Lindegaard during the January transfer window, while De Gea arrived after wining the Under-21 European Championships with Spain.
And as a result, Amos is unsure if his future lies at United.
"It is a decision like you would not believe," said Amos.
"It is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make and I am still thinking about it now. I do see an opportunity there.
"If I perform to the right level, anything can happen. The manager could throw me in. At the same time, I am risking not getting the game time I desperately need. I am weighing up the options and we will see what happens."
United are expected to chose between De Gea and Lindegaard for the season current raiser against Manchester City in the Community Shield.
Having spent a reported £20 million on the Spanish under-21 international, De Gea is the favourite to start for United at Wembley.

Ben Amos Ingin Kawal Gawang MU Lawan Chelsea
http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000067549.jpg
(sun/lex)
