Tottenham will begin their quest for a third successive appearance in the Carling Cup final with a second-round tie at Doncaster.

Spurs lost 4-1 on penalties against Manchester United at Wembley in March and will be going all out against their Championship opponents as they bid to get their hands back on the trophy they won with a famous victory over Chelsea in the 2008 final.

Port Vale have been rewarded for their first-round win over Sheffield United with a tie against Steel City rivals Wednesday, while the big-spending Manchester City open up their account away at Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield manager Lee Clark will look forward to a return to the north east against his former club Newcastle, while a spiky tie is in the offing at Upton Park, where West Ham will host Millwall.

Rotherham, conquerors of Derby in round one, will face another Championship outfit in West Brom, while Hereford's reward for knocking out Charlton is a trip to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth.

Other ties involving Barclays Premier League teams will see Leyton Orient playing host to Stoke, Bolton visiting John Barnes' Tranmere, Sunderland making the long trip to Norwich and Hull entertaining Southend at the KC Stadium.

Gillingham will welcome Blackburn to the Priestfield Stadium, Wigan are the visitors to Blackpool, Southampton host Birmingham at St Mary's while Burnley face Hartlepool, who defeated Coventry after extra time.

Wolves are at home to Swindon, while a host of all-Championship ties will see Preston meet Leicester, Nottingham Forest play Middlesbrough, Reading host Barnsley, Swansea entertain Scunthorpe and Ipswich make the trip to play Peterborough at London Road.

Leeds will welcome Watford to Elland Road, Carlisle are the visitors to Bristol City, QPR will meet Accrington at Loftus Road and Cardiff play host to Bristol Rovers.

United have been drawn at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Ben Foster was the hero at Wembley earlier this year as United lifted the trophy for a third time in the Reds' history. The England keeper was decisive in helping United to a penalty shoot-out win as the Reds and Tottenham could not be separated in 120 minutes of 2008/09's final.

This year the Reds kick off the defence of the trophy with a home draw against Barclays Premier League opposition. All third round ties to be played week commencing 21 September, dates and kick-off times confirmed in due course.

Carling Cup third round draw in full:

Arsenal v West Brom
Chelsea v QPR
Bolton v West Ham
Barnsley v Burnley
Hull v Everton
Leeds Utd v Liverpool
United v Wolves
Manchester City v Fulham
Sunderland v Birmingham
Peterborough v Newcastle
Carlisle v Portsmouth
Nottingham Forest v Blackburn
Stoke v Blackpool

United will face Barnsley at Oakwell in the Carling Cup fourth round next month.

The Reds continue their defence of the trophy after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in the third round.

A second-half Danny Welbeck goal proved enough to send United into the last 16 of the competition, despite playing much of the match with 10 men.

Barnsley, managed by former Reds striker Mark Robins, progressed after beating Burnley 3-2 last Tuesday. United have never met the Yorkshire side in the League Cup, although The Tykes did beat Sir Alex's side in an FA Cup fifth round replay at Oakwell in 1998.

Elsewhere, Arsenal will play Liverpool, Chelsea host Bolton and Manchester City meet Scunthorpe.

Fourth round

Blackburn Rovers v Peterborough
Manchester City v Scunthorpe
Tottenham Hotspur v Everton
Barnsley v United
Chelsea v Bolton
Sunderland v Aston Villa
Arsenal v Liverpool
Portsmouth v Stoke City

Matches to be played week commencing 26 October.
