VICTOR LINDELOF

Birthdate : 17 Jul 1994
Birthplace : Vasteras, Sweden
Position : Centre-back / Right-back
Height: 6ft 2in
Joined United : 01 Jul 2017
Joined From : Benfica
International : Sweden

2010-2012 : Vasteras 41 games, 0 goals
2012-2016 : Benfica B 96 games, 4 goals
2013-2017 : Benfica 73 games, 2 goals
2016- : Sweden 12 games, 1 goal

Dealing with pressure is something that appears to come naturally to unflappable Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.

In June 2015, he was faced with an intensity that must have been new to him as he stepped forward to take a penalty in the European Under-21 Championship final shoot-out with Portugal, the country where he plied his trade with Benfica.

Abdul Khalili had missed Sweden's previous attempt at the Eden Arena in Prague and Joao Mario's conversion tied the scores at 3-3. Calmness personified, the defender beat Jose Sa and William Carvalho's failure from 12 yards ensured the Swedes could enjoy a notable first international triumph.

Lindelof had only been introduced to the squad as a late call-up but performed with distinction at right-back, earning a place in UEFA's Team of the Tournament. It helped provide added impetus to his club career as he forced his way into the senior Benfica side and enjoyed experience in the domestic top flight and Champions League.

Patience has been important for the Scandinavian, who burst into Vasteras' first team when only 16 years old. He helped his local side gain promotion but left when Benfica came calling in 2012. The Lisbon giants had seen his potential in Sweden's Under-16s and Under-17s and made their move.

Still only 17, Lindelof understandably had to wait for an opportunity and cut his teeth with the B team, going on to make 40 appearances in the Portuguese second tier and spending his first season there as a right-back. A move into a more central position confirmed his growing maturity as he was able to impress at centre-half and also in a holding midfield role.

A loan move to Middlesbrough was discussed last year but he instead became a valuable member of the Benfica defence and successfully fought for his place. Speaking with confidence, he had declared an intent to oust his older, more experienced colleagues and so it proved as he emerged as one of Europe's most promising young defenders.

International recognition with Sweden's senior team has naturally followed and, after starting all three games at Euro 2016, he scored his first goal at that level against Bulgaria in October 2016. Although his primary focus is defending, he also grabbed an important equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon in April with a wonderful free-kick past Rui Patricio.

Winning trophies has become something of a habit for the Swedish stopper as he has three Portuguese league titles to his name, in addition to two Portuguese Cups, one League Cup and one Super Cup. This is without mentioning that European Under-21 Championship medal, of course.

Lindelof, approaching his 23rd birthday, appears ready to take this next big step in his career. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had identified his fellow countryman as an emerging leader last Christmas, telling reporters: "He is growing and has a lot of responsibility with the national team now."

And there is plenty to admire about the Sweden team at present. The 2-1 victory over France, at the scene of United's Europa League success against Ajax in Stockholm, took Janne Andersson's side to the top of Group A in the World Cup qualifiers. As the Netherlands are back in third place, it is a measure of the progress being made by the Scandinavian country and the prospect of a real upset in terms of clinching an automatic spot in Russia next year cannot be dismissed.

For now, the composed centre-back will be focusing on adapting to life at United after signing a four-year deal with the option of a further year, to start on 1 July. In 2016, Jose Mourinho's first summer signing was also a defender with much promise in Eric Bailly. If Lindelof can enjoy a debut campaign as successful as the Ivory Coast international's first year in Manchester, everybody will be delighted.

Manchester United are still keen on £38million man Victor Lindelof as FIFA look into cash row between Benfica and defender's old club in Sweden

* Manchester United are considering a £38million-move for Victor Lindelof
* Swedish defender is centre of a clash between Benfica and old club Vasteras
* FIFA are investigating row over a €250,000 payment for European appearances
* However, argument over add-on would not affect Old Trafford move

The £38million move Manchester United are considering for Victor Lindelof will not be stopped by a transfer dispute between Benfica and his first club.

The 22–year-old central defender is a major target for United in the January window and talks are on-going.

However, current employers Benfica and tiny Swedish third tier outfit Vasteras, where Lindelof started his career, are at odds over his 2011 £60,000 move to Portugal — with Fifa investigating.

The row concerns an add-on clause in the deal which stipulated that Benfica hand over 8250,000 after Lindelof made 10 first-team starts in the Primeira Liga and Champions League — which he accomplished in April.

Benfica have reportedly refused to pay, prompting Vasteras to complain to Fifa.

The contract under question also includes a sell-on clause which is thought to promise the tiny club 20 per cent of any subsequent move.

Manchester United are considering a £38million-bid for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof

Should that happen, Vasteras would net around £7.6m, instantly transforming their finances.

However, the lawyer representing Vasteras, who are situated in a small city around 60 miles west of Stockholm, has told Sportsmail that the wrangle will not hold up Lindelof’s potential transfer.

‘The case with Fifa does not concern the sell-on clause,’ Lars Nilsson said. ‘I don’t think it will hold anything up. It would be strange as it (the row) is based on another term. I would be very surprised if it made a difference.’

Nilsson says Benfica have not yet responded to Fifa.

‘I think they have until January 10 to do so,’ he added. ‘Hopefully Santa Claus brings them some sense at Christmas.’

The financial implications of the move for Vasteras, whose home stadium holds 7,000, are not lost on Nilsson.

‘Maybe the transfer to Manchester, should it happen, will allow Benfica to honour the sell-on clause and fulfil their obligations.

‘If they get that money they very much will have the capacity to pay us.’

Lindelof made his debut for his hometown club at 16 and now has 11 caps for his country. His Sweden team-mate, United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, believes his compatriot can be a success at Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic said: ‘He is growing. He has a lot of responsibility with the national team now.

Current United star Ibrahimovic has backed Lindelof (far left) to be a hit at Old Trafford

‘Is he good enough for United? I think he is ready for the big clubs out there. It is up to him what he wants and what the situation says. Whatever he chooses, it will be good for him. I know he is hot on the market, so let him make the right choice for him.’

A delegation from Benfica travelled to England on Monday to discuss a potential transfer. Benfica coach Rui Vitoria said: ‘If there are exits we will find solutions.’

Meanwhile, Antonio Valencia has opened discussions about a contract extension at United. The 31-year-old’s current deal runs out in 2018.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho calls off move to sign Benfica defender Victor Lindelof

* Manchester United held talks with Benfica delegation about move for defender
* However, Red Devils have now scrapped their interest in Victor Lindelof
* Manager Jose Mourinho is content with his current options at centre back

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Benfica’s £38million-rated defender Victor Lindelof after manager Jose Mourinho decided against signing a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

United have been tracking the 22-year-old Sweden international for some time, and a delegation from Benfica flew over to England last week for talks set up by super agent Jorge Mendes.

But although reports in the Portuguese media claim a deal is close, it’s understood that no bid has been made and Mourinho is happy with the central defensive options he has for the remainder of the season.

Manchester United have called off a move for Benfica's £38m-rated defender Victor Lindelof. Lindelof has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford and talks had been set up

The United boss has been impressed by the partnership of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo in the absence of Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly, who are both available again after injury.

Bailly will depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in January but Daley Blind gives Mourinho another option in that position, and he has decided not to pursue his interest in Lindelof.

There are suspicions that Benfica have been hawking the Swede around the transfer market in the hope of finding a buyer because they have a ready-made replacement in teenager Ruben Dias. Otherwise the Portuguese club will have to offer Lindelof a new contract with a significant pay rise.

It would not be the first time that Benfica have ramped up interest in their players. Nicolas Gaitan was persistently linked with a move to United despite little encouragement from Old Trafford, and Louis van Gaal is thought have pulled the plug on a move for Renato Sanches some time before he joined Bayern Munich from Benfica in the summer.

Mourinho will only add to his squad next month if players go out, and Everton are expected to step up their pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay next week. Schneiderlin is already the subject of an £18m bid from West Bromwich Albion.

However, United will reject any offers for Anthony Martial to go out on loan despite claims from the United winger’s agent that they are seriously considering the possibility of a short-term move to Sevilla next month.

Martial has grown frustrated at his lack of first-team football under Mourinho after an excellent first season at Old Trafford, and his representative Philippe Lamboley said: ‘We are studying the Sevilla option in detail.

‘Sevilla are a very good club, are in a good position in La Liga, play in the Champions League and have a great coach. That’s all I can tell you.’ West Ham have also enquired about taking Martial on loan, but Mourinho wants the 21-year-old French winger to work harder to win back his place.

West Ham also lodged enquiries about the availability of Marouane Fellaini and Marcus Rashford.

begitu tau United naksir, klub memberikan perpanjangan kontrak & menaikkan buy out clause, strategi buat menaikkan harga. lagian duet Jones-Rojo dah lumayan padu, ditambah Smalling yg dah sembuh. cedera Bailly & kalo harus berlaga di piala Afrika bisa ditutupi dengan Darmian/Blind. jadi posisi bek tengah gak urgent2 amat IMO

Manchester United set to sign Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in £35m deal
Manchester United have been long-term admirers of defender Victor Lindelof

* The Benfica star has been scouted for months and is now set for Old Trafford
* Portuguese paper Record claim United will sign Lindelof in deal worth £35m
* Jose Mourinho will pay just over £30m up-front, with almost £5m in bonuses

Manchester United will finally land Benfica defender Victor Lindelof this summer in a deal worth up to £35million, according to reports in Portugal.

Newspaper Record claim that the Sweden international will put pen to paper on a long-term contract at Old Trafford after terms between the clubs were agreed.

United will pay just over £30m up front for Lindelof, with almost £5m in bonuses if he achieves certain targets.

The report comes just a day after Portuguese daily O Jogo revealed that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira had travelled to England to negotiate the sales of Lindelof and his team-mate Nelson Semedo.

The 23-year-old defender has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Newcastle, although Jose Mourinho is also said to be interested.

According to O Jogo, Vieira believes he could receive as much as £83m from United if he is able to agree a double deal for the pair this summer.

The news of Lindelof's move - which is worth up to £35million - features on Record's front page

United have been keen on Lindelof since January, but a move was scuppered partly due to a payment owed to his former club Vasteras.

The 25-year-old signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract earlier this year, although that will not prove an issue with Mourinho determined to bolster his defensive options before the start of next season.

United scouts have watched Lindelof multiple times this term, including in Benfica's 4-0 victory over Belenenses in mid-March.

Jose Mourinho refuses to rule out a move for Benfica's Victor Lindelof as Manchester United gear up for busy summer transfer window

* Manchester United are exploring a £35million deal for Victor Lindelof
* United boss Jose Mourinho is currently on holiday in Portugal but was asked about the Benfica stopper
* Mourinho was coy about the 22-year-old and said he wouldn't be commenting
* United have also drawn up a number of replacements for David de Gea

Jose Mourinho has refused to rule out a move for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof as Manchester United prepare to begin their summer transfer business.

United were exploring a £35million deal for Lindelof in January, and it’s understood that Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes met with Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira last week at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester where the United boss stays.

Mourinho is currently on holiday in Portugal but was asked about Lindelof after giving a lecture at a university on the outskirts of Lisbon.

A smiling Mourinho was coy about the 22-year-old Sweden centre back, insisting that it would be disrespectful to Benfica coach Rui Vitoria to discuss his player in public.

He said: ‘I will not say if I want him or not, I think it’s incorrect.

‘Rui is not going to be happy with another club manager talking about a player who is his, and the president would not be happy to see that.

‘Lindelof is theirs and as long as he’s theirs, he’s theirs.’

Manchester United are interested in Benfica's £35million central defender Victor Lindelof. Jose Mourinho has refused to comment on a possible move for Lindelof

Meanwhile, United have drawn up a list of replacements for David de Gea if the Spain goalkeeper signs for Real Madrid this summer.

Real are expected to make their move after winning the Champions League at the weekend, and it’s understood that United would consider selling De Gea at a premium price.

The shortlist of targets is thought to include AC Milan keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Inter’s Samir Handanovic and, possibly, Joe Hart.

United, who will sell Sam Johnstone this summer, are also admirers of Atletico Madrid No.1 Jan Oblak. However, the transfer ban that hindered their pursuit of Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann is likely to rule out any move for Oblak as well.

Any negotiations for De Gea could involve Madrid striker Alvaro Morata who is a leading candidate to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old former Juventus striker is valued at £50m – substantially less than Everton’s Romelu Lukaku – and has been linked with a return to Italy with AC Milan.

Mourinho reiterated that he has tried to step back after a long season and is leaving the club’s transfer negotiations to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

‘I got fed up and tired of football before the last day,’ he said. ‘I promised that they would not see me in football stadiums, and I stopped negotiating for players and being worried.

‘I gave my list to the CEO in April and he has until August 31 to give me what I want or not.’

The Sweden international has revealed his joy at moving to Old Trafford, wher he will stay until the summer of 2021.

It is also understood that Benfica could be due a further £8.8m in add-ons.

In an interview on the club's official website, he said: 'I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United.

'I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there.

'But I'm looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho.

'I'm keen to get started and make my contribution to the team's efforts to win more trophies.'

He will get his chance to play with his new team-mates in the summer when United go on their tour of the US.

Mourinho believes Lindelof will add depth to his defensive line for next season, with the side competing in the Champions League.

Lindelof will be expected to help bolster United's defensive line ahead of the new season

VICTOR LINDELOF - INSIDE TRACK

Portuguese football expert Goncalo Lopes has given Sportsmail the inside track on the man heading for Old Trafford.

GL: Victor Lindelof likes to play ball, as we say here in Portugal. He's not the kind of centre-back that only has a defending role. He likes to have the ball at his feet, and to venture into midfield, but with caution.

He's very 'German' and has the nickname 'Iceman' because of the way he plays. Very tough, with a strong mentality, never loses his concentration - even under pressure - and with a high percentage on aerial duels. Also excellent are his tackling and passing skills. Perfect for the kind of game he'll face in the Premier League.

He has played three positions here in Benfica, from the youth teams to the first team: right-back, centre-back and also in the midfield. It was in this last position that he started his career in Vasteras, his first club in Sweden.

His idol was Steven Gerrard, but, for the United fans we can compare him to Rio Ferdinand. Here in Portugal he always mentioned Luisao, his team-mate, as his role model, because when he started to play centre-back, in the youth teams, Luisao was the captain and the boss of this Benfica team.

Lindelof likes to venture forward and Eric Bailly could cover this if they are paired together. In the aerial game, this partnership has everything to win most duels, they are both very good at this. Something else that Mourinho has always liked.

'Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United,' added Mourinho.

'Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer.

'I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us.'

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VICTOR LINDELOF

Victor Lindelof has become Manchester United's first summer recruit after moving to Old Trafford for a fee understood to be 35million euros (£30.75million).

The Sweden centre-back, known as 'The Iceman' in Portugal, made a name for himself at Benfica but remains a largely unknown quantity ahead of the new Premier League season.

Here, Press Association Sport identifies five things you need to know about the 22-year-old.

HE'S A LATE BLOOMER

It is almost seven years since Lindelof made his senior debut but he has only just passed the 100-top-level-appearances mark. He broke through at Vasteras - more on them later - in his homeland and was soon snapped up by Portuguese giants Benfica, who largely left him in their 'B' team until promoting him for the 2015-16 campaign. He has not looked back since, commanding a starting role in the Benfica back-line and helping the Lisbon club win a league and cup double last season.

ZLATAN RATES HIM

Lindelof arrives in Manchester backed for greatness by his fellow Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer. In November the prolific striker told the Manchester Evening News: "I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing. Is he good enough for United? I think he's good enough for the big clubs out there. It's up to him what he wants and what the situation says."

VASTERAS TO CASH IN

Vasteras, managed by former Celtic defender Johan Mjallby, are currently languishing in the Swedish third tier. But the windfall they should receive from Lindelof's sale to United will certainly boost the coffers ahead of a stab at promotion. The boy born in the city on Lake Malaren was sold to Benfica for just 60,000 euros, yet Vasteras will now bank around 4.1m euros in sell-on fees. A squabble between Vasteras and Benfica reportedly stymied his development, but now all parties can profit.

ACCOMPLISHED ON THE WORLD STAGE

Lindelof scored the fifth penalty in a shootout victory over Portugal in the final of the European Under-21 Championship and - with that medal in his cabinet - he is pushing for silverware with the senior Sweden squad. The Scandinavians top a World Cup qualifying group containing France and Holland thanks to a dynamic young team marshalled in defence by Lindelof and propelled forward by another rising Swedish star, Emil Forsberg of RB Leipzig. His experiences at United will only aid his quest.

SMORGAS-BORO?

While Lindelof was lost in the wilderness at Benfica, with a first-team future at the Estadio da Luz looking less than likely, he underwent a trial at Stoke. The Potters did not want to sign him for a reported £260,000 fee and so he tried his luck at Championship club Middlesbrough, who were understood to have been keen to tie up a £5million deal for the physically-imposing teenager. The deal fell through, but Boro can take comfort from the fact United have had to pay six times more.

The 22-year-old defender, bought from Benfica, has obtained the nickname 'The Iceman' for his cool persona on the field, as he explains in the Q&A, a transcript of which you can read below.
The Swede also talks about where he expects to fit in at United, having played right-back and defensive midfield in the past but really made his mark at centre-back for club and country.

Welcome to Manchester United. How do you feel now it’s been made official?
Thank you. It feels great. I’m very, very happy to be here at this great club so I couldn’t be happier.

You were linked for quite a while, so how pleased are you that Jose Mourinho was clearly so determined to get you?
Well, of course it feels great to know the coach wants you to finally be here. It makes me very happy.

Have you spoken to him yet?
Yeah, I’ve spoken to him. It was a good chat. It’s very important for me to hear what he has to say.

Jose has a history of getting the best out of the defenders he works with – was that a factor in coming here?
Yes, he’s a great coach and for me to be able to work with him is a great opportunity for me.

Was it a wrench to leave Benfica after enjoying great success there?
I’d been at Benfica for nearly five years, so for me to leave was of course not a tough decision but a hard decision. I was happy there as I developed a lot as a player but when the opportunity came, it was very easy for me to pick it.

Have you spoken to Zlatan Ibrahimovic about life in Manchester?
No, actually I haven’t. I haven’t spoken to him.

He’s doing his rehab here so it’s good you’ll be able to catch up with him…
Yeah, I think so. It’s going to be nice to have him around to speak to him a little bit about the club and everything around it. It’s going to be good.

What sort of defender are you?
I think I’m quite a calm player. I like to have the ball at my feet. I think I’m quite good with the ball and at reading the game, and I give my players in front of me quite a calmness knowing I’m back there trying to protect them as well as I can.

You’ve been described as versatile – you’ve played right-back. Can you play defensive midfield or do you see yourself as only a centre-back?
My position is a centre-back but, like you said, I was playing right-back before and started my footballing career as a midfielder. But I see myself as a central defender. I feel most comfortable there.

Do you model your game on any other centre-backs?
There a lot of good centre-backs and I don’t want to pick just one. I look at a lot of centre-backs, how they play the game and try to learn from the best.

There is competition for your place from Bailly, Rojo, Smalling, Jones and Blind – do you expect to fight for your spot?
Of course there are some great players here in my position. I’m here to do my best to try to help the team as much as I can and it’s always good to have other good players around you. When you have that, you get better as well.

The Premier League is the biggest league in the world. Was it always your ambition to play here?
Yeah, I always had a dream of coming here to play in the Premier League so, for me, it’s a dream come true.

How big a challenge is it coming to a different league?
I think every move means you have to adapt to a new environment but I feel comfortable in myself. I trust myself and it’s going to be tough but I’m looking forward to it.

You’ve won a lot of silverware at Benfica. What are your aims here – more of the same?
United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and always want to win titles. That’s also my goal. I want to come here and win titles. That’s the goal of the club and all the players as well.

You have experience of the Champions League. How valuable is that?
It’s been great for me to be playing at that level and playing against some really good teams. For me to be able to play in the Champions League has been very good. I think I have learned a lot from those games.

How will it feel to be running out of the tunnel at Old Trafford for the first time?
I can only imagine. It’s going to be a great feeling. I’ve been watching Old Trafford games on TV but have never been to the stadium, so I think it’s going to be a great feeling walking out there.

What was your view of United? They’re very popular in Sweden…
A very big club. Like you say, in Sweden, they have a lot of supporters and it has always been when you speak about the biggest clubs in the world, you always speak about United. It just feels like a great club and a great organisation.

How important is it to go on tour and settle in there?
Well, I think it’s very important for me to get the whole pre-season to get to know the system there, all my team-mates and everything. It’s going to be very important.

You take free-kicks – are you going to be laying down a marker to be United’s free-kick taker?
I’m not sure. Yeah, I’m quite good at them. If I get an opportunity to take a free-kick, I think I’ll be there!

How has the move been received in Sweden? Will it change your life here?
I think so. I think for everyone who is joining this club, it changes them. But I’m not sure how much really. Like you said before, we have a lot of fans in Sweden who support Manchester so we’ll see. I’m not sure how but it’s going to be good.

United fans have followed you since the move came about. Do you have a message for them?
I just want to say to them how happy I am to be here. I’ll do my best to represent this club so I’m very happy to be here. I hope they will enjoy it.

For now, the composed centre-back will be focusing on adapting to life at United. In 2016, Jose Mourinho's first summer signing was also a defender with much promise in Eric Bailly. If Lindelof can enjoy a debut campaign as successful as the Ivory Coast international's first year in Manchester, everybody will be delighted.

Manchester United announce the signing of Victor Lindelof... what will Swedish star bring to Old Trafford?

* Manchester United have announced the signing of defender Victor Lindelof
* Lindelof has earned the nickname the 'Iceman' for composed performances
* After two years in the reserves, Lindelof won first-team chance last season
* He has also become a regular in the Sweden side, having earned 11 caps

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Swedish defender Victor Lindelof, who has put pen to paper on a four-year deal after leaving Benfica.

The £30.7million deal could rise with add-ons, with the imposing defender set to bolster the ranks at Old Trafford next season.

Here's everything you need to know about the player nicknamed the 'Iceman'.

What's his background?

The 22-year-old hails from the Swedish city of Vasteras, located around 60 miles to the west of the capital Stockholm, and started his football life at various local sides, including the third-tier Vasteras SK.

After a fair few appearances in the Swedish leagues, Lindelof signed for Portuguese giants Benfica as a 17-year-old in December 2011 and was placed in their youth side.

Within a couple of years, he was knocking on the door of the senior side and a first-team debut duly arrived in October 2013.

However, it wasn't until the 2015-16 season that Lindelof established himself as a regular in the Benfica side that would ultimately claim the Primeira Liga title.

Taking advantage of injuries to two of the team's senior central defenders, Lindelof quickly impressed with his calm and confident performances during a close-run title race and managed to retain his spot.

He also seemed to be a lucky charm, with Benfica winning 13 of their last 14 league games - during which he played every minute - as they pipped city rivals Sporting Lisbon to the championship by two points.

While it was teenage sensation Renato Sanches that took most of the plaudits, those in the know recognised Lindelof's contribution too and the very apt 'Iceman' nickname stuck.

But really it was little wonder that Lindelof, having patiently played in the reserves during the first two years of his Benfica career, was ready to step up.

His stock rose considerably in the summer of 2015 when he impressed for Sweden in their victorious UEFA Under-21 European Championship campaign.

Lindelof wasn't even named in the Sweden squad initially but came in when Emil Krafth suffered a back injury. The tournament ended with Lindelof converting the decisive penalty as Sweden beat Portugal in a penalty shootout, earning him a place in the team of the tournament.

With more regular football for Benfica came promotion to the senior Sweden team and he has made 11 appearances, including starts in all three of their group matches at Euro 2016, where they crashed out at the first hurdle.

Tall and physically imposing, Lindelof has been compared to ex-United star Rio Ferdinand. Mourinho will need reinforcements at the back with Champions League football next season

https://s14.postimg.org/tpnh9cs2p/410646DE00000578-4565826-His_performances_contin.jpg (https://postimage.org)
His performances continue to be recognised by Sweden and he now has 11 caps to his name

What are people saying about him?

Someone who knows Lindelof well is his compatriot and future team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who believes he is up to the job at United.

He said: 'I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing.

'Is he good enough for United? I think he's good enough for the big clubs out there. It's up to him what he wants and what the situation says. Whatever he chooses will be good for him.

'I know he is hot on the market so let him make the right choice, what fits him good.'

Meanwhile, another Swede and one of United's 1999 Treble winners, Jesper Blomqvist, has also given his seal of approval.

Blomqvist told Manchester Evening News: 'I was watching the November match between Sweden and France on TV and caught a glimpse of Jose Mourinho in the stand and my first thought was that it could only be Victor Lindelof he was looking at.

'My second thought was what a great signing that would be for the player and Manchester United. It would be perfect.

'He's quick, confident with the ball, likes to play and is very strong. For United fans I think the best comparisons would be with Rio Ferdinand and Ronny Johnsen. I'm not saying he is at their level yet but he is very capable of getting there.'

What are his strengths?

The first thing is that Lindelof, who stands at 6ft 2in, is strong and physically imposing, yet also covers ground very quickly. This means he can operate at right-back, as he has done on occasion for Sweden, as well as centre half.

That height and strength makes him very effective aerially and it's rare that he will lose a contest with an attacker in the air. It will also ease his adaptation to the physicality of the Premier League.

His timing in the tackle is also excellent, as shown by the fact he has received only one yellow card this season and picked up just five last year.

Lindelof isn't afraid to take the ball and burst forward into midfield, either, meaning that defence can be turned into attack in the blink of an eye.

What about weaknesses?

Lindelof, it has been noted, is sometimes a little too keen to get rid of the ball, often out of play. And although he is willing to break out of defence, the right pass is sometimes lacking.

He has worked hard on this aspect of his game and once he masters it will be something approaching the all-round defensive package.

What happens next?

At the moment, the United centre half berths are very much up for grabs and Mourinho will need a number of options at the back next season — especially with United qualifying for Champions League football next season.

Lindelof will certainly get his chance and has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. United will certainly hope he seizes that opportunity.

DJORDJIC'S LOWDOWN ON VICTOR LINDELOF

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell/~/media/33A19AED491D486E8493CDEB317902AF.ashx?w=1280&h=720&rgn=0,419,2328,1731

Victor Lindelof is most at home in central defence but Swedish compatriot Bojan Djordjic feels Manchester United's new signing can also provide cover at right-back.

Djordjic, the winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in 1999, was born in Belgrade but represented Sweden at Under-21 and Under-18 level, and he spoke on MUTV's The Paddy Crerand Show about Jose Mourinho's latest recruit.

"He's a very good prospect and I'm not just protecting him because he's Swedish and I have a Swedish passport," said Djordjic. "It's because I've followed his career from when he left a third-tier side in Sweden, Vasteras, to go to Benfica B.

"Swedish people and scouts lost him under the radar but he's really proved himself worthy of this move. He's been terrific at Benfica since he made his debut against Zenit St Petersburg at home in the 2016 Champions League.

"He can also cover as a right-back and played at right-back when Sweden won gold at the Under-21 European Championship in the Czech Republic two years ago. But, at centre-back, you're getting someone who is confident, has good feet and is not afraid of bringing the ball out.

"He is not afraid. He is not going to be fazed as he's played on a big stage at Benfica's stadium, which holds a lot of spectators as well. He's been there and done that."

Djordjic believes Lindelof will have learned the ropes by playing alongside South American stopper Luisao at the Estadio da Luz. The veteran, capped 46 times by Brazil, partnered the Swede more than any of his central defensive colleagues during their time together in Lisbon.

"You have to cut everybody some slack," Djordjic replied, when asked about allowing the defender time to settle. "But he's coming from Benfica, not some mid-table club in Holland or Belgium. He has been on the big scene, won league titles and played Champions League football.

"So he is up to pace playing against the best. Benfica have been a great club for a long, long time. I hope he is another of their players who does well. Victor played with Luisao, the Brazilian centre-back, and learned a lot from him. He had many games and many victories with him and, if he just keeps developing, he will get his chance to shine."

COOL REDS DEFENDERS FOR LINDELOF TO FOLLOW

Dubbed 'The Iceman', Victor Lindelof looks set to follow a long line of cool and composed Manchester United defenders.

Confident, ball-playing centre-backs have been a staple of the Reds' backlines throughout the Premier League era, with the club's 13 title wins built upon solid foundations that married defensive style with substance.

While United greats such as Steve Bruce, Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic were famed for their physical, no-nonsense approach, each of them had a partner at the heart of defence who was unflappable in the face of danger and calculating in distribution.

Here, we list five former defenders who remained remarkably cool when the heat was on.

GARY PALLISTER (1989-1998)

That United won three out of the first four Premier League titles from 1993 to 1996 is testimony to Pallister’s formidable partnership with Bruce, and the former’s assuredness seemed infectious as the Reds often won tight title races by a slender margin, with pressure gradually increasing throughout the season. Famed for finishing seasons strongly, Sir Alex Ferguson's team were able to count on the graceful no.6, one of the club’s most trusted lieutenants, to exude an air of calmness.

RONNY JOHNSEN (1996-2002)

Signed in the summer of 1996 to replace the Birmingham City-bound Bruce, Johnsen brought Scandinavian nous to the Premier League, and his calm nature also saw him thrive at the base of midfield when required. Bringing the best out of those around him in the heat of battle, Johnsen aptly slotted in alongside Pallister, David May or Henning Berg before forming his most formidable partnership with Jaap Stam in 1998/99 as United became Treble winners.

MIKAEL SILVESTRE (1999-2008)

Little was known about Silvestre in England prior to his move to Old Trafford, but the Frenchman quickly rose to Premier League prominence as an accomplished and cultured defender. Arriving with experience of top-flight football in Italy with Inter Milan, he was confident enough to perform just as competently at left-back as he did in central defence. Only one red card in almost 250 league appearances speaks volumes of his temperament.

LAURENT BLANC (2001-2003)

The World Cup winner was aged 35 when Sir Alex signed him and his experience proved crucial during the club's 2002/03 title-winning campaign. Blanc’s reading of the game and positional sense helped him to develop a reputation as one of the more unshakeable defenders in United’s rich Premier League history. An elder statesman of the side, the future France and Paris Saint-Germain manager flourished as a leader and sharpened the focus of his team-mates with unerring ease.

RIO FERDINAND (2002-2014)

Forming an impressive axis with Nemanja Vidic, Ferdinand was a perfect foil for the Serbian strongman, exuding grace when in possession and striding out of defence with the ball to commence a United attack. Rio's discipline on the pitch was commendable – the England international picked up just 20 yellow cards and one red in 12 years with United – and marks him out as one of the club’s coolest-ever defenders.

Over to you, Victor Lindelof.

LINDELOF PROUD TO MAKE HIS UNITED DEBUT

Victor Lindelof was proud to make his unofficial Manchester United debut in the 5-2 win over LA Galaxy, and the summer signing is already looking forward to more appearances for the Reds.

Jose Mourinho fielded two teams at the StubHub Center on Saturday night and Lindelof was part of the second-half XI, playing as one of three centre-backs alongside Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe.

The Reds ran out comfortable winners against the MLS side, thanks to a clinical brace from Marcus Rashford and further goals from Marouane Fellaini, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial.

"It felt very good, I am very happy to have made my debut for this great club,” Lindelof told MUTV. “We won as well so I am very happy. It felt good, it is the first game so it is a bit different. I am not used to playing with three at the back, but it felt good in a way and I am very happy.

“It is the first game and I am really looking forward to playing more games. It felt good. I like to play games, I like to train as well, but the games are more fun so I prefer the games."

On the subject of Rashford and fellow debutant Romelu Lukaku, Victor said: “Marcus is a very good player so I am very happy for him to score. Romelu is also a very good player. He is very, very strong and has some really good qualities so it is just a matter of time before he finds the net as well.”

Lindelof could have scored himself when the ball feel to him inside the penalty area midway through the second half, but his shot soared off target and the former Benfica man was frustrated he couldn’t find the net. “I know man - it was close, it was close, so maybe next time.”

At the end of his first week, Lindelof is happy with his progress. "My first week has been very good,” he concluded. “All of the guys in the team have really helped me a lot. It feels really, really good.”

Victor Lindelof not even on Manchester United bench for West Ham clash as £30m signing's fiancee sticks up for Swede on Twitter

* Victor Lindelof not picked in matchday squad for Jose Mourinho's side
* Defender struggled on his debut against Real Madrid in European Super Cup
* It is understood £30million signing is not injured and was simply omitted

Victor Lindelof has not even made the Manchester United bench for the season opener after joining from Benfica for £30million.

The central defender struggled in his competitive debut for Jose Mourinho's side in their defeat by Real Madrid in the European Super Cup.

And it seems his new boss is unwilling to risk the new man against West Ham at Old Trafford.

It is understood that Lindelof's omission is not due to any injury problems and he has simply been left out.

Lindelof's fiancee Maja Nilsson posted a photo on Twitter and slammed critics of her partner.

She wrote: 'You guys are f****** poisoning my timeline. Get out of here.'

Victor Lindelof has been omitted from Manchester United's squad to face West Ham

Mourinho will start with Phil Jones and Eric Bailly at centre-back as the Europa League champions prepare to welcome the Hammers to Old Trafford.

Yet again the Portuguese manager has shown his ruthless streak, unwilling to pander to a high transfer fee or give Lindelof time to adapt.

Time will tell if his decision is the right one, with Chris Smalling on the bench rather than the Swede.

MOURINHO WILL HAVE PATIENCE WITH LINDELOF

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has explained that he will give Victor Lindelof time to adapt to English football following the defender's summer move from Benfica.

The boss has explained how Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic are already well versed in the Premier League and that is why they were able to make instant impacts in the 4-0 win over West Ham United.

As for Lindelof, he will be given time to settle at Old Trafford with Phil Jones and Eric Bailly starting at the back against the Hammers.

"I think Real Madrid [in the UEFA Super Cup] was too early for him," said Mourinho. "He played because Jones and Bailly were both suspended.

"I've had players coming from different leagues to the Premier League and, normally, it's not easy. It's different for Lukaku and Matic as they have had years and years in the Premier League.

"I brought Ricardo Carvalho to Chelsea in 2004 and he was a phenomenal defender, one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, but he struggled. It was difficult for him to come in and adapt in the beginning.

"I think Victor needs a little bit of time and he is going to have that time. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is not a defender but, last season, he needed his time too. So let's go step by step because Victor is a fantastic player."

Manchester United centre back Victor Lindelof to be kept out of spotlight by boss Jose Mourinho after enduring difficult pre-season for his new club

* Jose Mourinho left Victor Lindelof out of Manchester United squad on Sunday
* The Sweden international watched from the stands as United beat West Ham
* Portuguese boss is keen to keep the £31m signing out of the limelight for now

Jose Mourinho will keep Victor Lindelof out of the firing line while Manchester United’s new £31million defender adapts to the demands of English football.

Lindelof endured a difficult pre-season and watched from the stands on Sunday as United’s other two summer signings, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, starred on their home debuts in the 4-0 win over West Ham.

It’s understood that Mourinho will take a similar approach as he did a year ago with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was substituted at half-time on his full debut in the Manchester derby last September and did not start again in the Premier League for nearly three months.

https://s3.postimg.org/4gnvqrf8z/4338_EAC400000578-0-image-m-2_1502634144729.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Victor Lindelof was omitted from Manchester United's squad on Sunday by Jose Mourinho. Mourinho has admitted that Lindelof is down the pecking order at OId Trafford for the moment

The United boss will carefully select the games for Lindelof to give him the best chance of settling in after admitting that the Swede will take time to adjust to life at Old Trafford.

Mkhitaryan was quick to back his new team-mate at the weekend, saying: ‘Lindelof is still going to have time to show himself.

‘So I want to say all the players are good signings, and they are going to help us a lot.’

United’s willingness to pay Benfica more than £30m for Lindelof this summer – instead of completing a £25m deal for Michael Keane – surprised some football observers in Portugal.

The 23-year-old is said to have been a little sluggish in training and was exposed on several occasions in United’s pre-season games.

Mourinho admitted that Lindelof would not have played in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid last week had the suspended Eric Bailly and Phil Jones been available.

Bailly and Jones came straight back into the squad for Sunday’s Premier League opener against West Ham, and Chris Smalling was preferred to Lindelof on the bench.

If Smalling stays at Old Trafford beyond the end of the transfer window and Marcos Rojo returns from a serious knee injury on schedule in December, United’ s new signing may have to accept limited playing time in his first season.

One benefit, as Mourinho pointed out last week, is that Lindelof can also play at right back.

Antonio Valencia has been having treatment for a niggling knee injury and United are concerned that the Ecuador international’s combative style will risk making the condition worse.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are on course to return to action in the next couple of months after taking part in a six-a-side game with United’s substitutes after the West Ham game.

Lucas Aditya - detikSport

Manchester - Bek baru Manchester United, Victor Lindelof, masih kesulitan menembus starting eleven.

ULTIMATE FOOTBALLER: LINDELOF V AMENDOLA

To celebrate the start of the 2017/18 NFL season, Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof faced New England Patriots wide-receiver Danny Amendola in a series of challenges to find out who is the ultimate footballer.

The challenge, part of the #GameRecognizeGame (http://www.unitedindonesia.org/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=GameRecognizeGame) series, took place at United’s training base in LA during Tour 2017, presented by Aon, and United’s new centre-back represented football, while Amendola looked to put in a strong showing for the NFL.

The first challenge saw the stars face-off in ‘Foot darts’, an entertaining game which saw the players attempt to find the bullseye of a huge velcro darts board, with a velcro soccer ball.

Unsurprisingly, Lindelof got the better of his opponent in this one, as he found the bullseye with his third effort, although Amendola did put in a strong showing, and came close on a number of occasions.

The next trial saw the two players engage in a trivia challenge, and again the Swede came out on top, after he correctly identified what the acronym ‘NFL’ stands for.

However, both men were able to correctly name two top-flight sides in their opponent’s respective sports, as the wide-receiver picked Manchester United and Arsenal, while Lindelof named the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins.

The final challenge saw Lindelof and Amendola engage in a catching machine challenge, which the wide-receiver comfortably won, even managing to catch a ball fired at him at 100mph from a short distance away.

Moskow - Bek baru Manchester United, Victor Lindelof, masih belum tampil oke.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof brushes off concerns about relationship with Jose Mourinho and insists he feels 'no stress' despite slow start to life at Old Trafford

* Victor Lindelof has insisted he has a good relationship with boss Jose Mourinho
* The 23-year-old is yet to make his Premier League debut since his summer move
* Despite slow start to life at Manchester United he also insisted he isn't worried

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof insists he has a 'good dialogue' with boss Jose Mourinho despite a challenging start to life at Old Trafford.

The Sweden international, who signed from Benfica in the summer for a fee of £30million, is yet to make his Premier League bow.

Apart from two Champions League appearances and 90 minutes in an EFL Cup win over Burton, there have been little signs of trust from Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss previously said he is simply giving him time to adapt to his new surroundings as well as making the adjustments to fit into his style of play before throwing him into the first team.

And despite being limited to reduced first-team opportunities since his move north, the 23-year-old insists he is not worried about it.

Victor Lindelof has dismissed doubts about his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho. Lindelof is yet to play a Premier League game under Mourinho but said they are on good terms. He also insisted he feels 'no stress' despite making a slow start to life at Manchester United

He told Swedish outlet Expressen: 'I feel no stress. I'm in one of the world's best clubs, it's clear that it's tough competition. But it may have the time it takes.'

When pressed about what was said in discussions with Mourinho about his situation, the centre back added: 'It's between me and him. But we talk and have a good dialogue.'

Lindelof is currently away on international duty with Sweden and is targeting a spot in next year's World Cup.

Sweden first host Luxembourg before making the trip to Holland for their final qualifier next week.

They currently sit second, a point behind France in Group A of the European qualifying section.

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof will make his mark at Old Trafford despite stuttering start insists his former Benfica boss Rui Vitoria

* Victor Lindelof has endured a stuttering start after moving to Manchester United
* Has struggled since move from Benfica who United face in Champions League
* Benfica boss Rui Vitoria has no doubt Lindelof will flourish under Jose Mourinho

Victor Lindelof has endured a stuttering start at Manchester United but Benfica manager Rui Vitoria has no doubt he will flourish under Jose Mourinho.

The Sweden centre-back had long been a target for United, who forked out an initial £30.75million to bring him in from the Portuguese champions during the summer.

Things have not started smoothly for Lindelof, though. Expected to go straight into Mourinho's starting line-up, the 23-year-old is being eased in due to the rigours and demands of Premier League football.

Victor Lindelof horror show highlights just why Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho does not trust £31m signing

* Manchester United paid Benfica £31million for Victor Lindelof this summer
* But Jose Mourinho does not seem to trust him and has yet to start him in the PL
* Lindelof came off the bench to replace the injured Phil Jones at Huddersfield
* It was quickly apparent why Mourinho has reservations about the Swede
* Within 10 minutes of coming on, Lindelof made two errors that led to goals

Phil Jones thumped the ground in frustration. For him, a familiar tale. Just as that groove had returned, that presence in the heart of Manchester United's defence, his body failed him.

This time it appeared to be a thigh problem that forced him off 23 minutes into what ended up a chastening afternoon for Jose Mourinho. Jones has been a key component of United's sturdiness at the back.

Alongside John Stones, he is England's form centre half, enjoying his longest run of Premier League starts - 13 - since signing six years ago. The full extent of this latest setback is so far unknown but the way Jones instinctively motioned to come off does not bode particularly well.

https://s1.postimg.org/5u9qmaij5b/458_B492200000578-0-image-m-80_1508603952954.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Justifiably so. Within 10 minutes of replacing Jones with Victor Lindelof, United were 2-0 down

Nor did it for United, who felt his absence almost immediately. Only five minutes passed before his replacement, Victor Lindelof, had showcased just why Mourinho cannot trust him right now.

Lindelof is the £31million central defender who does not seem to fancy committing to tackles or heading footballs. One of his first involvements was to completely misjudge a situation on halfway which led to the opener.

Aaron Mooy, the eventual goalscorer, pounced on Juan Mata's indecisiveness but over-ran the ball. It was there to be mopped up but Lindelof, who looked overawed by the occasion, dithered and ended up jockeying for 40 yards before Mooy found the net.

Perhaps that mistake was on his mind because worse was to follow. Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl smacked a ball downfield in hope and Lindelof was right underneath it. Laurent Depoitre loitered, Lindelof inexplicably ducked. Depoitre scored.

A pair of embarrassing goals conceded by United in five minutes, having previously only giving up two in almost 11 hours in the Premier League with Jones manning the defence. Definitely no coincidence.

Lindelof ducked out of a header moments later and was punished by Laurent Depoitre (left)

Lindelof, signed to move United on from the likes of Jones, endured a shaky pre-season tour of America and disappointed during the Super Cup final defeat by Real Madrid. He'd only played a minute in the Premier League before this. Yet Mourinho simply cannot legislate for these sort of errors.

United legend Paddy Crerand delivered a blow at half-time, saying they 'gave away two goals like you would see in a kids match,' and he was right. Yes, it is extremely early in Lindelof's career here and yes, there is a significant adjustment in coming from Benfica. But these are the basics and should raise serious concerns among Mourinho's coaching staff.

So too the injury situation. Mourinho said on Friday that he 'will not cry' about the ever-lengthening list of absentees but they are unquestionably hindering him. Eric Bailly will be back for the Tottenham game next Saturday and he will have to be based on Lindelof's display in the howling wind and swirling rain.

It was actually hard not to have a pang of sympathy for Chris Smalling, who had a fine afternoon in the Yorkshire damp. The 23-year-old next to him, however, has some work to do.

A TALE OF TWO MISTAKES

MISTAKE 1: Lindelof made the wrong decision in not engaging with Aaron Mooy on the halfway line.

MISTAKE 2: Lindelof ducked out of the way of a long punt upfield and Laurent Depoitre cashed in.

Victor Lindelof underlines importance of grinding out win over Brighton: 'We didn't play our best but we got the win'

* Victor Lindelof believes Manchester United's win over Brighton showed strength
* The Red Devils won 1-0 after Ashley Young's shot went in off Lewis Dunk
* Lindelof admits his side didn't play their best at Old Trafford on Saturday
* Jose Mourinho's side next two games are away trips to Watford and Arsenal

Manchester United's win against Brighton was not pretty but Victor Lindelof believes it was an important show of strength at the start of a crunch week.

Jose Mourinho's second-placed side began the weekend eight points behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City, so needed to keep pace when promoted Albion arrived at Old Trafford.

Chris Hughton's Seagulls threatened to cause an upset on their first visit to United since 1993, but the hosts secured a narrow 1-0 win after Ashley Young's strike went in off Lewis Dunk.

United were far from their best but Lindelof knows eking out victory was important ahead of the upcoming trips to Watford and Arsenal.

'It was a tough game,' the Sweden international said.

'We got the three points and that is the most important thing. We didn't play our best game today but we got the win and that shows strength.

'We tried to do our best out there, we tried to play our game but it didn't work out so good today.

'But we still got the win and that is the most important thing.'

Victor Lindelof admits Manchester United didn't play their best against Brighton on Saturday. The 23-year-old put in a man-of-the-match performance in his side's scrappy 1-0 win

Lindelof has struggled since his big-money summer move from Benfica, but the defender was one of few United players to impress on Saturday. The 23-year-old was named man of the match and his crunching second-half tackle on Anthony Knockaert brought the biggest cheer before the goal.

'I think it was a good challenge,' Lindelof said, smiling.

'It was a 50-50 ball and I just thought 'I have to win this ball' and I did.'

Promoted Brighton can justifiably feel hard done by given their impressive display. It brought Albion's five-match unbeaten run to an end but Glenn Murray is keeping positive ahead of Tuesday's derby clash against his former club Crystal Palace.

'I can't really remember one moment in the game where we were carved open and to only concede from a deflected shot is something to take a lot of positives from,' the striker said.

'We're getting better all the time and when we had the ball, we did well with it.'

Victor Lindelof claimed a Man-of-the-Match award on Saturday and helped keep a clean sheet as Manchester United ran out 1-0 winners over Brighton, and the defender says he is feeling more and more comfortable every day.

The Swede is loving life as a Red since making the summer move from Benfica and is confident he's making good progress.

Before the match with Brighton, Lindelof sat down with United Review to discuss his time at the club so far, the return of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo, and why everyone is relishing the busy festive period...

Our home form has been outstanding this season hasn’t it and we set a new record after the win over Newcastle…
It gives us a lot of confidence when we play at Old Trafford and I think we have to keep that going and keep performing the way we have been doing. It’s our home and we have our fans behind us and that gives us a lot of strength.

There were some very big positives on top of the result against Newcastle with the return to the squad of Pogba, Ibra and Rojo – how much of a boost has that been for everyone?
They’re very good players and very important for us so it’s great to have them back. Paul started the game and showed his qualities right away. Zlatan came on with about 15 minutes left and he’s a fantastic player and very important as well for the team, both on the pitch and off it. They give us a lot of strength and it’s great to have all three of them back.

What quality of Paul's do you most admire?
It’s hard to pick one thing, he’s just a fantastic player and also such a nice guy. When he has the ball, the vision he shows and the things he can do with the ball are brilliant. It’s very important to have a player like that in the midfield who can create things from nowhere.

His goal celebration went down well. Is he the best dancer in the team?!
I think so! I think we have a few good dancers, but he’s one of the best! [Smiles]

Your fellow countryman Zlatan received a tremendous ovation when he made his return against Newcastle – how big is his presence in the dressing room as well as on the pitch?
He’s a very important player and has been at the top, top level for a very long time and has a lot of experience. You can learn a lot from him. When he speaks you listen and you try to learn as much as possible. The way he has come back from his injury has been incredible to watch and I’m very happy for him.

Does it help you personally having a fellow Swede in the dressing room?
It’s always nice to have a friend from Sweden and it’s great to have Zlatan here for me. I played a little bit with him for the national team but it’s different here because we see each other every day. He’s a very nice guy and he helps me a lot.

How do you feel you’ve settled in at the club?
It feels good. Every day that goes by I feel more and more comfortable here and I’m enjoying the city and meeting the people here too. Everyone around the club is very nice and my team-mates have been great. I really feel like I am getting to know the place better and better every day.

What have been the biggest changes to playing for Benfica?
Obviously, the league here is much tougher than Portugal. Over there, you have good teams but you have the top teams that are always the favourites in every game and winning almost every game. Here, it’s much more difficult and you have tough games every week – that’s the biggest the change, the competitiveness you have in the league.

The manager always speaks in a complimentary way about you - does that give you extra confidence?
Yes, it does and I like him a lot. He’s a very good coach, in my opinion, the best in the world and, for me to be able to work with him, is a pleasure. All of the staff and coaches as well, they are great and I am learning a lot from them. I’m just trying to do my best to work hard every day and listen to them because they know a lot about football, so it’s about listening and learning.

Zlatan's return adds to a pretty frightening forward line - how good are our attacking options and how enjoyable is it to sit behind them and watch them go?
They are world class. The things they can do with the ball and the speed and strength they have… it’s a joy to watch. We have fantastic players and it must be tough for the manager to pick a team because we have a very good squad and now with the players coming back from injury there is a really good depth to the squad. That’s really important now as we have a lot of games coming up.

We’re eight points behind City but there is still so long to go. Are you confident we can close the gap and continue to challenge for the title?
There are a lot of good teams in the league and we’re very confident we can do well. We just have to keep working hard every day and during the games we have to be really focused and do the things we know we can do.

Finally, there are so many matches coming up in the next few weeks, are you looking forward to showing what you can do and where the team can go?
Yes. The games are the most fun part of football. Training is fun also, but you play football to play the games, that’s the best part of it. We have a lot of games coming up and we have to be focused on the recovery between games so that the body can be 100 per cent ready. As I said before, we have a very good squad with a lot of depth and good players. We’ve made a good start in every competition, now we just want to keep on going and do our best.

Jose Mourinho praises defender Victor Lindelof after another 'positive' display for Manchester United against Watford

* Victor Lindelof singled out for praise following Manchester United's latest win
* Lindelof neutralised the threat from Richarlison during the 4-2 win over Watford
* Jose Mourinho praises the defender as well as goal-scorer Anthony Martial

Jose Mourinho once again singled out defender Victor Lindelof for special praise following Manchester United's victory at Watford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils moved to within five points of leaders Manchester City courtesy of a 4-2 win at Vicarage Road but they had been cruising at the break.

Former Watford winger Ashley Young scored two stunning goals inside six minutes to break a scoring duck stretching back to May 2016 and, when Anthony Martial tucked home a third, the visitors looked home and hosed.

Instead, Watford hit back as substitute Troy Deeney converted a 77th-minute penalty before Abdoulaye Doucoure turned home to bring Marco Silva's side within one goal.

The points would be secured in style as Jesse Lingard scored a fantastic solo effort after running at the Watford defence.

Lindelof, 23, has started United's last three Premier League games following a slow start to life at Old Trafford following his big-money move from Benfica in the summer.

He was named man of the match in the 1-0 win over Brighton last weekend and did well to keep the likes of Andre Gray and Richarlison at bay for much of Tuesday's contest.

'I think Richarlison is a very good player and a difficult player to play against but Victor is very fast,' Mourinho told MUTV.

'He has adapted to play centrally but also to go to the sides because he's got the agility that many of the central defenders don't have.

'I think it was another very positive performance by Victor.'

Victor Lindelof put in another 'positive' display for Manchester United, says Jose Mourinho

Like Lindelof, Martial has established himself in the United side in recent weeks having been in and out of the team as he rotated with Marcus Rashford.

Mourinho was equally pleased with the France international's contribution at Watford - even if he believes there is still more to come from the former Monaco man.

'I am pleased,' he said of Martial's performance.

'I think he suffers a little bit with accumulation of matches. I could feel that in the second half he was going down and down and down.

'He's still a young guy and his body, his biological situation has space to improve but in the first half, during the time, he had strength and explosion in his legs. He was dangerous and scored an important goal.'

Doucoure, whose strike gave Watford hope of salvaging a famous point before Lingard's effort kept them at bay, admits lessons must be learnt ahead of Saturday's visit of Tottenham.

'To learn in these situations you have to take the positives,' he told watfordfc.com.

'We came back to 3-2 so it is good for the team and we come back against Tottenham and Saturday and play the same as we did in the second half and we can achieve some objectives.

'I think Spurs will come here like Man United, they are a very strong team with big players so we have to concede less goals to get a result against this type of team and of course we can do that on Saturday.

'You concede three goals in the first half against this kind of team and it is very hard to come back after.'

WHY LINDELOF WILL BE A FINE UNITED PLAYER

Former Manchester United player and popular MUTV analyst Bojan Djordjic is backing Victor Lindelof to shine at Old Trafford, having noted his Swedish compatriot’s recent development.

Lindelof replaced the injured Marcos Rojo at half-time in Sunday’s Manchester derby and produced an accomplished performance, showing admirable composure and good form in difficult circumstances.

It was his 13th appearance of a debut season that has involved challenges for the 23-year-old, who arrived from Benfica in the summer and has required time to acclimatise to English football.

Yet, in recent weeks, Lindelof has started to show his true quality with the Reds and that is no surprise to our former Academy graduate Djordjic, who knows the player extremely well.

“Victor did well against Manchester City and it gladdens me to say that, because he had a really tough start and, when you have a tough start, supporters get on your back,” Bojan explained during his appearance on The Paddy Crerand Show. “Certain fans did it after the mistake against Huddersfield - and I think they should take a look at themselves first because, if you are a supporter of this club, then you always support. You have to give new players a little bit of time and a chance to adapt.

“I would love to see Victor playing alongside Eric Bailly, who has been injured. I think he needs a leader beside him, somebody he can trust so he can spread the balls. To come on in the derby and do that well was great. I am happy to sit here as a Swede and talk well about his development."

Expanding on the topic, Bojan went on to list Lindelof’s burgeoning list of achievements in football and highlighted the period of education that the great Nemanja Vidic utilised upon his arrival in 2006.

“Some fans need to let a player settle in before they go on social media and slaughter players,” he said. “This guy plays for the Swedish national team, he won the league and cup at Benfica and he has just taken Sweden to the World Cup as well, so there is a player inside.

“Playing for Manchester United is totally different to anything else in football because, with one mistake, people just write you off straight away. So people have to look with their eyes a little bit and see his quality. Not only does he have a brain, he is very strong mentally as well to cope with this and he is going to get better, and better, and better. It took the great Nemanja Vidic to settle here, and Nemanja Vidic was a totally different player in style. Just give him time and he is going to be a fine player for the club.”

HOPES FOR 2018: LINDELOF'S PROGRESS
Report by James Tuck

Like all Reds, the main thing I’m hoping for in 2018 is to see Manchester United continue on an upward trajectory under Jose Mourinho, entertaining us all and competing for trophies.

But if I were to pick out a specific wish, it would be to see Victor Lindelof realise his potential in a United shirt. While there’s no denying he’s ensured a challenging start to his career here, the mild-mannered Swede has still proferred several examples of his enormous talent in the first half of the season.

His composed, Man-of-the-Match display against Brighton & Hove Albion in November felt like a turning point and he really looked the part in our subsequent wins at Watford and Arsenal. And there’s no shortage of support for the former Benfica man – witness the reaction around Old Trafford to that thunderous tackle he made on the Seagulls’ Anthony Knockaert, and how much we’ve all referred to it since. We’re desperate for him to do well.

But it’s going to take time. Let’s not forget that other esteemed defenders made inconspicuous starts to their United careers. Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic took six months to find their feet in England, while Patrice Evra famously endured a nightmare debut in the Manchester derby; those three alone went on to rack up over 800 combined appearances and silverware galore.

Mourinho clearly saw something in Lindelof – a three-time league champion with Benfica – when he signed him from the Portuguese outfit in the summer. And the boss has a history of making astute defensive captures – think of Ricardo Carvalho at Chelsea, Lucio at Inter Milan and Raphael Varane at Real Madrid.

In my view, Victor has looked most at home when playing in a back three but he’ll doubtless be working hard behind the scenes to ensure he can slot into whichever defensive system Mourinho deploys, and to ultimately become a first-choice defender for the club.

On the face of it, the 23-year-old has all the attributes to succeed in the English Premier League: poise, positional awareness, distribution with both feet and a steely edge. And if he can complete his adaptation in the coming months, I see no reason why he can’t go on to join that long list of cultured centre-backs to grace the Old Trafford turf.

The opinions in this story are personal to the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Manchester United Football Club.

LINDELOF: I'VE ALREADY IMPROVED AT UNITED

Victor Lindelof feels he has become a better player during his first eight months as a Manchester United player.

The Swedish defender arrived at the club from Portuguese side Benfica last summer and, by his own admission, he took time to adapt to the rigours of English football.

However, he became a regular starter at centre-back in November, after Eric Bailly was sidelined with an ankle injury, and more recently he has partnered Chris Smalling in the last three games with United conceding just once during that period.

"I’m always happy to help the team," Lindelof told MUTV, ahead of what could be his 24th appearance for United in all competitions - Monday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.

"As a player, you always want to play games and that’s what I’ve been doing over the last few games and I’m very happy that I can help the team on the pitch."

When asked how the adaptation process has been for him over the last few months, Lindelof said: "I think it’s been good. I think everywhere you go, it’s always going to take some time to adapt but I feel good.

"Every day I work out and I work hard to try to help the team. I’m always trying to be myself on the pitch and trying to do what I think I can do well.

"Of course, I think I’ve become a better player since I came here. I’m basically still the same type of player as I was when I came here, so I’m just trying to improve on those things that I’m already good at. I think I develop every day."

Still relatively young in football terms at the age of 23, Lindelof puts his daily development down to a combination of playing with United's established stars and working with Jose Mourinho and the coaches.

“I think it’s a mixture,” he said. “We have a lot of good players here, we train every day with each other and you can learn from everyone in the team. Then of course, I have all the coaching staff who help me and the team every day.”

MUTV will show exclusive build-up to Monday's game from 18:00 GMT on the Match Day show.

CREDIT FOR DE GEA AFTER 16TH CLEAN SHEET

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof insists David De Gea's incredible second-half double save proved the Spaniard's fantastic quality yet again as the Reds secured a comfortable 16th Premier League clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford.

Lindelof played his part in the centre of defence as the Reds held firm for another shut-out, whilst first-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were enough to secure the three points.

The Swede paid credit to United’s no.1 after his brilliant double save from Tammy Abraham, the first of which could easily be added to our show-reel of his top Premier League saves, as the Reds secured a 16th clean sheet of 2017/18 – the most in the Premier League thus far.

“Swansea had two good opportunities in the second half, but we had David De Gea in goal and like I always say he is a fantastic goalkeeper,” Victor told MUTV. “I think [those two saves] prove his quality. The opponent might not have much [shots at goal], but he is always ready when shots do come and always there to save them. He is a fantastic player.

“We always want to keep a clean sheet, that’s very important for us because if we keep a clean sheet, we know our attacking players can score goals.“

Lindelof was pleased with the first-half showing and credited the front players for some brilliant link-up play.

“I think we started the game very good, we kept the ball very well and then we scored two very good goals," he reflected. "In the second half we came out and they had a few chances, but other than that we controlled the game very well.

“The front players had great movement and had a great buzz between them. They had a lot of freedom and I think they showed it out there – they had a lot of fun.”

Lukaku scored his 26th goal of the season and in the process bagged his 100th Premier League strike and Lindelof was full of praise for both he and United’s second goalscorer, Alexis.

“To score that many goals it is a great achievement and I am very, very happy for him and of course we are happy to have him on our team," added the defender. "I think Alexis also had a very good game and he showed his movement and quality with the ball is great so I am very happy for him as well.”

LINDELOF TIPPED TO SHINE IN HIS SECOND YEAR AT UNITED

To mark the one-year anniversary of Victor Lindelof joining Manchester United from Benfica, we spoke to Swedish football expert and former Academy graduate Bojan Djordjic, gathering his unique analysis of his countryman’s first 12 months at Old Trafford…

Last June, was it a big deal in Sweden when Victor joined United?
Of course it was. It doesn’t matter which country you are from, going to Manchester United is huge news and especially with Victor because his career had taken him from the third tier of Swedish football to Benfica B, then into their first team, then the national team and next to United. His career was going up and up.

Had he been expected to join a big club and potentially in England?
Benfica is a huge club when you look at the silverware they’ve won and players they’ve produced. When you move from Sweden, fight your way into the first team and play alongside Luisao, like Victor did, then you know the player must have quality. Victor was relatively unknown when he went out there as well, but he played a lot of games, forced his way into the Swedish national team and then, of course, everybody except me realised this kid had something really special.

It is fair to say Victor experienced a challenging but promising first season at United. How do you assess it?
I would say that the media in England have been really tough on Victor, but I also expected that when he moved for big money and people expected him to start every game straight away. When he made the mistake at Huddersfield, I knew it would be tough for him because people still haven’t let that go. Was he the only one who made mistakes that season? He became a scapegoat. But I remember games when he was brilliant, like Brighton at home and Watford away, and supporters who watch football saw those positive sparks. But others who decided in October he was going to have a bad season were never going to change their minds. That’s what I sometimes don’t like in England – people are too quick to judge players and you have to give youngsters more time.

Is it a sign of Victor’s character that he seemingly wasn’t affected by that game at Huddersfield?
I always knew he was mentally strong. Two weeks after that mistake, he put the national jersey on and played two World Cup play-off games against Italy without conceding a goal, sending his country to Russia 2018. Even at 23, he is thinking about tomorrow and not yesterday. Those two games helped him. He was brilliant alongside Andreas Granqvist and we went through because of them.

Do you feel he got better as the season went on?
I think he progressed and he still needs time. It is a tough task at United and, of course, I want him to do well because he is my fellow countryman. For me, a big part of his development is having a leader alongside him. At Benfica, he had Luisao and with Sweden, he has the captain, Granqvist. I would love to see him with Eric Bailly at United. That combination would help his progress, massively.

It is clear that Jose Mourinho trusts him, particularly when teams allow us to play the ball out from the back…
Of course he does. Victor is good with his feet and in England you have to defend a lot more than you do in Portugal, where you have the ball all of the time. But he has shown for Sweden that he can do both. We had France and Holland in the qualifying group, finished second and then beat Italy to reach the World Cup. That means he didn’t make mistakes at the back, like people go on about at Huddersfield. Is he the only player to make a mistake? Bigger players have made bigger mistakes and have still come back. That makes you a winner and makes you a Manchester United player.

Many people point to the difficulties that Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra endured throughout their first seasons at United back in 2006/07. Could Victor’s future be similar to theirs?
Listen, we can only hope and speculate. But they were unique and special players, so I don’t think it is fair to speak about them when we discuss Victor. I just hope he has the opportunity to play with Eric Bailly, because injury meant they couldn’t last season. In my opinion, that’s a great combination, with somebody who is strong in the duals and another who brings the ball out, and reads the game well. Football has changed. Unfortunately, people always say ‘we want a proper defender’ but those have gone out of the game. You have to be a modern defender and Victor is exactly that.

Do you expect Victor and Sweden to have a positive World Cup?
The most important thing for Sweden was qualifying and the team also needs to perform well, but nobody expected us to progress in the first place because of the change in manager, the transition in the squad and Zlatan retiring. Expectations for the team are low in a way, but we have South Korea and Mexico in the fight to finish second behind Germany in the group. As for Victor, he is guaranteed to start at centre-back alongside Granqvist, who is the latest Golden Ball award winner here in Sweden. They always start together: Victor handles the ball and Andreas is strong in the tackle.

If Sweden finish second, then Brazil are probably next up in the last 16…
And then we pack our bags and go home [laughs]! But what a challenge that would be, especially when you have nothing to lose against what is arguably the best side in the world at the moment – not only with the starting XI, but the players on the bench as well. Some players never get an opportunity to play on a stage like that, so it should be embraced. Of course, Sweden also perform when everybody writes us off against bigger nations. Our problem is when the other team sits back and lets us have the ball. Our better games were against France, Holland and Italy, so you never know. I’m fascinated to see how it all unfolds.

Will Victor return to United with added confidence and momentum?
Definitely! Victor played a lot of games in his first season at United, he is happy at Old Trafford and, after the World Cup, he will come back for pre-season with a determination to be even better.

Victor Lindelof says his experience of Tour 2017, presented by Aon, went a long way towards helping him settle into life as a Manchester United.

The Swedish international joined the Reds last summer from Portuguese outfit Benfica, and his first taste of playing for arguably the biggest club in the world came during the visit to the United States last July.

Jose Mourinho and his men will be travelling back across the pond next month and, before jetting off to represent his country at the World Cup, Lindelof reflected on the importance of going on tour.

“Being on tour is very important, especially when you’re new,” the defender told ManUtd.com. “It gives you a chance to get to know all the players, the staff and the manager, and learning about the system he wants to play. UCLA [the team base] was a brilliant place to train last year and the weather was good too, which is always a positive thing!”

Lindelof is currently away on international duty with Sweden in Russia. He was forced to sit out their opening 1-0 win over South Korea through illness but returned to action against Germany, making his World Cup debut in their agonising 2-1 defeat last weekend.

As the Scandinavians bid to prolong their stay at the tournament, the United man will remain focused on matters for his country for the foreseeable future, but when asked before he left for the World Cup what he most enjoyed about last year’s tour, he insisted: “Just the whole experience. Being in the States with the club, getting to know all my team-mates and seeing how big United is globally.

“It’s always great to travel with the team and experience new things, and, of course, meet all the fans around the world. I have great memories of the experience.

WHY LINDELOF CAN SHINE FOR UNITED NEXT SEASON

The World Cup ended with a host of headlines in honour of Paul Pogba, but the imperious midfielder was far from the only United player to excel in Russia…

Our sizeable Belgian and English contingent reached the semi-finals, while Marcos Rojo gifted the thirsty Argentinian public with the greatest moment of their campaign, by rifling home a late winner against Nigeria in a must-win group-stage clash.

However, flying stealthily under the radar was Victor Lindelof, who was an essential component of the industrious Swedish side that made the last eight, and established himself as one of the tournament’s best defenders in the process.

Our no.2 endured a testing first term in M16, but the assuredness and steel he displayed on world football’s biggest stage this summer bodes well for his sophomore season. And Victor wouldn’t be the first Red to return from the World Cup with a renewed sense of conviction in his own abilities.

Could Lindelof use FIFA’s showpiece competition as a springboard to help establish himself at the heart of United’s defence?

The man known as ‘the Ice Man’ during his time at Benfica – presumably due to his cool demeanour, or the fact he hails from the chilly climes of Vasteras in central Sweden – turns 24 today (Tuesday).

Lindelof missed the 1-0 victory over South Korea that opened Sweden’s campaign due to illness, but was a towering presence alongside former Wigan Athletic centre-back Andreas Granqvist for their subsequent four matches. Against Switzerland in the last 16, BBC Sport viewers voted him as the Man of the Match.

“Victor has been the pick of the bunch,” remarked Lindelof’s compatriot and ex-United midfielder Bojan Djordjic. “People speak about our captain, Granqvist, because he’s been like a cult hero after Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] and all that, but Victor has been amazing.”

The relationship with 33-year-old Granqvist is not a new development. The two were also at the heart of Sweden’s surprise victory over Italy in the two-legged play-off last November that ultimately earned them a place at the finals in Russia.

At Benfica, Lindelof shone alongside another relative veteran, 37-year-old Brazilian stalwart Luisao, whom Jose Mourinho has long admired.

Both partnerships enjoyed the kind of consistency that United have been unable to regularly find at the back, largely due to injury issues. However, the hope is that in the 2018/19 season, Lindelof can find a similar rapport with one of his club colleagues and solidify a clear first-choice partnership.

Victor showed strong signs of his fierce personal determination last season, responding to a difficult afternoon at Huddersfield Town in October with strong performances against Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford the following month.

A crunching tackle on Anthony Knockaert in the former game had the Old Trafford crowd on their feet, roaring with approval, and was vital in creating the momentum that led to United’s opening goal, which proved decisive in the 1-0 victory, soon after.

During the 4-2 win at Watford three days later, he unfurled more of the cultured side to his game, starting several of United’s exhilarating counter-attacks by threading precise passes through to the midfielders and attackers.

“His technique, left and right foot, is great,” purred Jesse Lingard, when we spoke to him in December 2017. “He plays the ball forward and will always look for that forward pass, which is obviously good for us attackers.”

Other impressive matches followed, against Chelsea and Arsenal in the second half of the season, indicating that the Swede was adjusting nicely to the distinctive challenges sometimes posed by top-flight English football, after predominantly featuring in the Champions League during the season’s early stages.

Now a second term at Old Trafford beckons and, after a well-earned break, the hope is that Lindelof can deliver the form he produced at the World Cup on a weekly basis for United.

The tournament acted as a spur for David Beckham to produce his very best, after a turbulent France ’98, while Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to make his final leap to greatness after soaring at the 2006 edition in Germany.

Can Victor do the same? We’re about to find out.

LINDELOF'S ON A HIGH AND READY TO SHINE

Victor Lindelof is eager for more chances to show what he can do in a Manchester United shirt in 2018/19, after an unforgettable summer on and off the pitch.

In May, shortly after completing his first season at Old Trafford, Lindelof returned home to Sweden to marry his fiancée Maja, shortly before he linked up with his national team for the World Cup.

The 24-year-old centre-back impressed in Russia as Janne Andersson’s side progressed to the quarter-finals, before being knocked out by England.

And Lindelof was back in a United shirt on Friday, playing the full 90 minutes alongside Eric Bailly as the Reds began the new Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

“I feel great,” Victor told us last week. “I had a good summer: first, I got married and had an amazing time, then I played in the World Cup, which was also a great experience.

“And after a good rest, I’m back here and ready for what’s to come. It’s always nice to get a good start, as that gives you more confidence and you can be more relaxed.”

Lindelof, who made 29 appearances last season, knows the importance of building on Friday’s win to make an early statement of intent in the top flight.

“It’s a very tough, competitive league with a lot of great teams,” he said. “Every game matters and we’ll try our best to win them all.

“We have to get that winning mentality in every game, in every situation – we have to be 100 per cent in everything we do.”

Victor Lindelof has grown to become a talented defender, but it will surprise many to hear that the Manchester United man once had his heart set on playing in goal.

Speaking ahead of the Reds' Premier League trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, the 24-year old Swede explained how his aspirations of being a goalkeeper as a youngster came about after receiving a shirt with a United hero's name on the back.

“When I was younger, we had a market in my hometown in Sweden that sold different shirts there and my mother brought me a Barthez shirt, so that's why I wanted to be a goalkeeper,” said Victor.

“I wanted to be a striker as well but, in that moment of my life, I wanted to be a goalkeeper.”

Barthez arrived at Old Trafford in 2000 and went on to become a favourite of the fans during his four years at the club, helping the Reds to win two Premier League titles as well as keeping 30 clean sheets.

On the international scene, Fabien won the World Cup with France in 1998 and went on to keep 10 clean sheets across three major tournaments before retiring from football in 2007.

The Reds got the better of Brighton twice at Old Trafford last season, with victories against the Seagulls in the league and in the FA Cup, but were beaten on our first trip to the Amex Stadium back in May.

Victor acknowledged that United are in for another difficult away day on the south coast, but keen to continue our winning start to the new season, after beating Leicester City on opening night.

“It's a tough opponent,” the centre-back said. “They are a very, very strong team. They work very hard for each other and they never give up, so it's going to be a difficult match, but we just have to keep going.

”We had a good few moments in the last game at home [against Leicester] and things we can continue to improve on and stuff like that, so we just have to keep working hard and prepare ourselves for the game and hopefully we can get the three points there as well.“

United's opening game against Leicester saw Victor partner with Eric Bailly in central defence, as he made only his second outing for the Reds since returning to the fold following his World Cup exploits with Sweden.

“It was my second game of the season and I had a lot of practice before that, but yeah it went well,” our no.2 reflected.

“Eric is a good defender and it was a pleasure to play with him and hopefully we can perform and play well in the future. I'm here to help the team and I'm always trying my best, so hopefully I can just keep working hard and be at this level that I am at the moment.”

LINDELOF: WE DIDN'T DESERVE TO LOSE

Victor Lindelof praised the second-half performance of his Manchester United team-mates - and Jose Mourinho acclaimed the Swede's display - following the Reds' 1-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, the defender was pleased with the reaction of the squad after the interval and stated that the improvement would be something to build on, going into this weekend's Premier League fixture against Everton at Old Trafford.

“We were playing against a very good team, very good players and yes, it was a tough game, but I think we deserved more than to lose,” said Lindelof.

“In the last couple of games we have played really well in the second half,” he added. “I don’t know why, but we need to start the games the way we play in the second half I think, so we need to work on that.”

The Reds fell behind after 17 minutes, as Paulo Dybala capitalised on a deflected cross into the box. However, after the interval, United did produce more of an attacking threat with Paul Pogba's effort striking the frame of the goal before bouncing off Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.

“The way we played in the second half, I think we can take that with us and we can work on that,” Lindelof continued. “We know Juventus are a great team, but we’re also a great team when we have the ball in play, so the way we played in the second half, I think we should do that more often.”

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho complimented the contributions of Lindelof and fellow central defender, Chris Smalling, when he spoke to the media. The United defence were matched up against one of the best attacking forces in Europe, as Cristiano Ronaldo starred for the visitors on his return to Old Trafford.

“This was the first time Victor has played a game of this dimension and he had a positive game,” Mourinho said. “Lindelof and [Chris] Smalling played well. On the goal, there was a bit of a positional situation with them, with the midfield players, but they played well.

”They were fast, they were aggressive, they dominated the space, adapted very, very well. Chris and Victor, they pressed up, they got Cristiano in the movements that he does behind the defenders. They were really positive, both of them,“ he added.

”Luke Shaw, at this level of the Champions League, had a good match. It was good experience for some of the boys – [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Romelu] Lukaku – it’s only his second season in it too. So we work. We work hard and we try to improve our players but quality is quality and again, I repeat, quality in football is everywhere.“

VICTOR LINDELOF EARNS RESPECT OF UNITED FAITHFUL

Victor Lindelof might not have managed to overhaul his attacking colleague Anthony Martial in the race for October's Player of the Month award, but the Swede's second-place finish in our poll proves that Manchester United fans are delighted with his recent form.

The man from Vasteras was also up against Martial's French compatriot Paul Pogba - another of the club's most gifted and popular players - but snared a very respectable 16 per cent of the vote to finish as runner-up after three encouraging displays against Chelsea, Juventus and Everton.

Writing about a player named 'Victor' finishing second has its complications, but those numbers show United's supporters' growing recognition for our no.2's efforts during a difficult period for the Reds.

I was in the Stretford End for the latter two matches, and Lindelof's increasing authority - and the loud and enthusiastic response to his efforts - was one of the most pleasing aspects of each game.

The former Benfica defender battled through a testing first season in England, and a difficult start to 2018/19 followed, as Jose Mourinho's side were beaten at Brighton and West Ham.

After the 3-1 reverse at the London Stadium, Lindelof had to wait until our visit to Stamford Bridge for a return to the starting XI.

The prospect of negotiating arguably the Premier League's most dangerous creative threat, Eden Hazard, and Maurizio Sarri's free-scoring Chelsea might have sent lesser men under, but Victor responded with one of his best performances for the club, and made a crucial late intervention to thwart Olivier Giroud.

Up next? The small matter of Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Paolo Dybala's slightly fortuitous first-half winner was enough to give impressive Juve the win but, again, Lindelof emerged with credit, and was singled out by United legend Gary Neville as our outstanding player on the night.

Victor could be seen easily matching the speedy Joao Cancelo for pace, before classily chopping the ball away from United's goal and into his own path back up the field. Scrapping to win the ball back to help United sustain their attacking momentum during the second half. Dominating one-on-ones. Feeding off the crowd’s positive reaction to his determination, and taking more and more responsibility. He looked like a man becoming more accustomed to life under the Old Trafford spotlight with every passing minute.

“This was the first time Victor has played a game of this dimension and he had a positive game,” said the boss. “Lindelof and Smalling played well. They were fast, they were aggressive, they dominated the space, adapted very, very well. They pressed up, they got Cristiano in the movements that he does behind the defenders. They were really positive, both of them.”

Against Everton – in a game where United enjoyed much more possession – we were allowed more of an insight into what Lindelof can do on the ball, when his confidence is high.

I first watched Victor a few months before he joined the club – on a visit to Benfica’s Estadio da Luz in January 2017. They thumped relegation candidates Tondela 4-0 and the future Red barely had to make a tackle all afternoon. The Eagles completely controlled possession, and Lindelof’s role was more akin to that of a creative central midfielder, tasked with stepping into the centre of the field to start moves and thread passes through to his colleagues in the forward line.

In the match with Marco Silva’s side, you could see Victor getting his head up more and more often, and threading ambitious passes – with both feet – through to Martial and co. It’s a vital attribute for any top team and something Mourinho has admitted United have struggled with at times.

Against Newcastle – a game Victor was not involved in – the boss used Scott McTominay at the back to give United’s backline more creative capabilities. Later in the match, he moved Paul Pogba into the back three to give our attacks greater fluidity from deeper in the pitch.

The rough and tumble of the Premier League, where even the best teams are hit with pace and physicality for a significant portion of almost every game, is something most imports take time to adjust to – Nemanja Vidic being an obvious example.

But Lindelof has proven he can cope with some of the British game’s more outre dimensions. His relationship with Chris Smalling, with whom he has started eight United games this season – and each of the last three – is maturing and shows promise.

In the grand scheme of things, three games and one month is only a platform. As ever at this club - and as harsh as it might be - you are only as good as your last performance. When I spoke to Smalling earlier this month, he told me being a Manchester United player was “not just having a few good games, or one or two good seasons. You need to keep doing it and doing it.”

But Victor has shown the level he can reach in a red shirt, and the response he can elicit from the 76,000 that turn up at Old Trafford to watch the team.

Now, his mission is to maintain it.

VICTOR LINDELOF NAMED SWEDISH PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof was named Swedish Player of the Year for 2018 at an awards ceremony in Stockholm.

The 24-year-old received the prestigious 'Guldbollen' trophy for the first time, after further establishing himself at Old Trafford and shining at the World Cup finals in Russia.

Lindelof has started 10 of the Reds' 12 Premier League games so far this season, and came second in the fans' vote for the October Player of the Month award - behind only Anthony Martial, who has now scored in five consecutive league matches.

“It means very much for me to receive this prize,” United's no.2 told the guests at the gala, which was also attended by former United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who clinched the award for 10 consecutive years between 2007-2016.

“I am extremely proud and grateful,” Lindelof continued. “I want to thank all my team-mates in my club and national team, but also my family, who have always been there for me in wet and dry. You really mean everything to me.

”I would also like to thank my beautiful wife, who is always there, helping and supporting me.“

Manchester United star Victor Lindelof nets Swedish player of the year award… and he is just the second player to win after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's 10 years of dominance

* Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the award in every season between 2007 and 2016
* But he missed out last year and Victor Lindelof collected the honour this week
* He admitted he was very proud and grateful to be named as player of the year

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has been named Sweden's player of the year.

The 24-year-old was given the honour on Monday night, and became just the second player to win it after a decade of dominance by his former club team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

LA Galaxy striker Ibrahimovic won it in every year between 2007 and 2016.

He also thanked his wife, Maja: 'To my beautiful wife: thank you very much for being there and taking care of me and helping me and always supporting me.

'You... you are... you mean everything to me.'

Lindelof was one of the stars of Sweden's World Cup campaign as they reached the quarter-final stages, only to be knocked out by England.

Lindelof was clearly delighted to have picked up the honour during Monday night's ceremony. He admitted that he was 'very proud' and extremely grateful to be named as the winner

He has also impressed for Manchester United in recent weeks, although he was on the losing side in this weekend's derby against Manchester City. United lost that game 3-1.

Lindelof follows Andreas Granqvist in picking up the honour. His fellow central defender ended Ibrahimovic's dominance over the award last season when the striker did not win it for the first time since 2006.

Sweden take on Turkey and Russia during the international break.

Jakarta - Victor Lindelof menunjukan determinasi tinggi saat Manchester United diimbangi Crystal Palace. Dia menjadi representasi MU masih punya ambisi.

LINDELOF SHOWED VIDIC-LIKE QUALITIES AGAINST SPURS

When Victor Lindelof arrived at Manchester United from Benfica in 2017, he had a reputation as a stylish defender - perhaps more Rio Ferdinand than Nemanja Vidic, closer to Gary Pallister than Steve Bruce.

In the traditional sense of 'silk and steel' partnerships, he would provide the silk. It is true he is good on the ball, something referenced a number of times by former boss Jose Mourinho, and caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described the Swede as 'cultured' after his impressive showing against Tottenham at Wembley.

But maybe our perception will change of the 'Ice Man', somebody we hoped would grow into becoming cool and unflappable at the heart of the back four, once he adapted to the Premier League.

Much was made of Lindelof's need to come to terms with the physical side of the English top flight and, on a horrible wet and windy afternoon at Huddersfield Town, he had something of a baptism of fire as the Terriers scored twice in a torrid first half for the Reds. Essentially, this was a first test for the Scandinavian in the division. He had come on as a very late substitute at Anfield in a goalless draw, deep into stoppage time, but he was called upon much earlier at the John Smith's Stadium when Phil Jones was injured in the 23rd minute.

Due to the fact he had been held back from performing in the league (the game was on 21 October), there was always going to be a sense that he was taking time to settle and one simple misjudgment of a Jonas Lossl goal-kick in the blustery conditions allowed Laurent Depoitre to run on and score the eventual winner.

Yet Lindelof was always going to be allowed time to show his ability and one moment that really got the Old Trafford crowd on side came in the win over Brighton in February 2018. The centre-back made a bone-jarring challenge on Anthony Knockaert that lifted the fans and, although it could easily have been penalised with a free-kick, it displayed an aggressive edge to the player that was welcomed.

And Victor is not afraid to make such hard, but fair, challenges when the right situations dictate. Football has changed to the extent that tough tackling has been limited due to stricter officiating in this respect, which can only be seen as a positive step, and yet supporters do still love and appreciate any full-blooded attempt to win the ball.

The calm stopper is probably more likely to capture attention for the times when he is not at full stretch and being forced to make interventions like the one against Harry Winks as Spurs broke at the weekend. However, it was interesting to see fans compare it to one of Vidic's most bruising tackles, when he clattered into Kyle Walker during a fixture against Sunday's opponents in 2013. It was one of the memorable moments of a superb personal and collective performance against the north Londoners.

Nobody is saying Lindelof will develop into a Vidic clone, and the player himself told Inside United recently that he does believe he is a ball-playing central defender. But an ability to add more of a physical edge, to combat and quell some of the burlier centre-forwards in the Premier League, is certainly a promising development.

The 24-year-old's confident dribble in Solskjaer's opening game, at Cardiff City, that created a chance for Marcus Rashford, may turn out to be more of an indicator of what we will see from him as he continues to mature. Yet it is reassuring to know Lindelof has this tough side in his locker and is clearly learning what it takes to succeed in England.

LINDELOF: I CAN BE MAD FOR A WHILE AFTER LOSING

Although he is affectionately nicknamed the Iceman, in-form Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has admitted he can lose his cool in the aftermath of defeats – at least for a little while.

The Swedish international has been a rock at the heart of defence so far this season, racking up 27 appearances in all competitions to date and notching his first goal for the club last month against Burnley.

Victor was alongside Eric Bailly at centre-back on Tuesday night as the Reds were beaten 2-0 by Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford in the first leg of our Champions League last-16 tie.

In a wide-ranging interview for the latest edition of Inside United - conducted in January - Victor revealed it can take time to get over the disappointment of losing.

However, he generally has the same attitude after victories.

“I hate losing – that’s the worst thing I know,” said our no.2. “I always want to win so, after a loss, I can be quite mad for a while and my wife knows that!”
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/10/11/10/0417406C000007D0-0-image-a-2_1507713872043.jpg
Inside United: March 2019 Victor Lindelof says
"I hate losing – that's the worst thing I know. I always want to win so, after a loss, I can be quite mad for a while and my wife knows that!"

Expanding, Victor smiled: “She won’t speak with me for a little bit when I get home [laughs]. But I also think it’s important to let it go too. It’s okay to be angry but, after a few hours, you have to move on and I’m very good at doing that.

”I’ll say ‘Okay, that’s now in the past, let’s move on and look forward to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I love to win, but it’s the same thing, you’re happy for the win but, the day after, you then have to look forward and work hard for the next game.“

LINDELOF'S LOVING LIFE IN MANCHESTER

Victor is in his second season at Old Trafford, having experienced life in Portugal with Benfica and in his native Sweden prior to his move to Manchester in the summer of 2017.

Away from football, the 24-year-old told the club’s official monthly magazine that he and his wife enjoy living here.

“I like it a lot,” he said. “I really like the people here, they’re very nice. There are some good restaurants and places to go, and you have everything you need.

”I live a bit outside of town and it’s very beautiful there. It’s important for me that my wife likes it here too, and she really enjoys it.“

While out and about, Victor is always pleased to meet and greet United fans, whose unwavering support he has always been grateful for.

When asked if he sees supporters a lot in the city, he said: “Sometimes when I’m out eating, yes. During the season, I like to stay at home and relax but, when I am out, you see fans who want to take a picture or just say hello – that’s always nice.

”The fans are always supporting us and giving us extra energy in every game. We want to keep doing more, score more goals, win every game and it’s always for them. The support they have given me as well has also been great and I’m very thankful for that.“

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

The Reds have plenty to look forward to and be optimistic about as we approach the business stage of the season.

Victor insists the lads must continue the good work and states his personal aims for every match in which he plays.

“It’s been very good in the last few weeks and we’ve been playing some good football,” Lindelof said.

“All the guys have shown their qualities. I think we have to keep going and continue to work really hard and do the things we’ve been doing. And we always have to give 100 per cent in everything. Not 90, always 100 – that’s very important.

”I’m just happy to be helping the team. I’m a team player and that’s the most important thing for me. I’m just happy that I can perform well and help us get the wins and not concede goals. Those are my objectives in every game.“

"Toh aku menyukai persaingan.

LINDELOF: WATFORD WILL BE TOUGH BUT I'M READY

Victor Lindelof feels he will relish the physical battles that Watford attacking duo Andre Gray and Troy Deeney could pose when the Hornets visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Swedish defender has had a key influence in United’s campaign this season, having appeared in 25 Premier League games so far.

He also scored a dramatic late goal against Burnley - his first for the club - to snatch a point at Old Trafford back in January.

As the Premier League returns to Old Trafford on Saturday, Lindelof is upbeat about the prospect of taking on Deeney and Gray, who have been in good form for Javi Gracia's side.

“I don’t have a problem with it - I like it,“ the 24-year-old told MUTV. "I’m ready for it. If they want to get physical, I’m down for it.“

“They are two physical players. They like to be physical. That’s not a problem for me. I like that and I don’t have a problem with him. But they always work hard like I said. They run a lot. They never give up. In every challenge, they go up to win it and it’s something you have to be ready for.”

Victor also spoke highly of the progress made by the Hornets, who are currently as high as eighth in the league and enjoying a strong campaign.

“They are a good team,” our no.2 commented. “I have played against them a few times and they are a very, very strong team. They work very, very hard for each other.

”It will be a very hard game. They always give 110 per cent on the pitch.”

'MANY REDS DESERVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR ACCOLADE'

The former Benfica man also believes that a lot of United players have performed well this season and many deserve to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Season award.

Victor said: “A lot of players have performed well during the season. They’ve been showing their abilities. They helped us a lot. I can’t sit here and name one player. I think, a lot of players deserve it.”

HOW I COMMUNICATE WITH OLE

With his fellow Scandinavian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, now the permanent manager at Old Trafford, Lindelof has hailed the influence the Norwegian has had at the club since his arrival - initially as caretaker boss - back in December.

“He’s been great to all the players,“ Victor said. ”He’s helped me a lot as well. Like I always say, he’s come in with a big smile. He talked to me and told me to express myself on the pitch and do the things that I’m good at. I think I have been doing that a lot. But its always nice to hear that from your coach because it gives you a little more confidence.”

‘The Iceman’ also told us that he talks to Solskjaer in Swedish and Ole talks to him in Norwegian.

He said: “I speak to him in Swedish and he speaks in Norwegian back to me. It’s nice to speak a bit of Swedish. They’re quite similar. It’s just how you pronounce words. Some words are different, but it’s not a problem. I understand everything he says. The same’s with him.”

LINDELOF SHOWS LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Victor Lindelof displayed leadership qualities against Barcelona on Wednesday night that highlighted improvements since he took charge.

In the previous round at Old Trafford, the Reds reacted badly to conceding an early goal and were soon 2-0 down and in need of the most amazing of turnarounds in France to get through.

When VAR intervened to decide Luke Shaw's disallowed own goal should stand, Lindelof helped his team-mates regain their focus in the Barça game and avoid a repeat of suffering further damage when the chips were down.

“After they scored, we settled down,” Ole said at his post-match press conference. “I thought Scott [McTominay], Fred and Paul [Pogba] did that for us. You see the way Victor, as well, brings everyone together when they score.

”Of course, we remember the PSG game and, for 10 minutes after we conceded the first goal at home, we were all over the place. This time, that didn’t happen. We got together as a group and it gives me a clear indication that we are learning and we are improving.“

Solskjaer believes United still have a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals and meeting either Liverpool or Porto in the last four, with the Merseysiders 2-0 up from the first leg at Anfield.

Although Marc-Andre Ter Stegen was not really tested, Ole knows things could be different at the Nou Camp.

“I think they [Barcelona] will be wary,” he added. “Today, as well, it showed that we did put some pressure on them at times and got wide with loads of crosses into the box. We just couldn’t fill that box enough.

”We have to take more chances and release Paul or Scott or whoever from midfield to help the strikers try to score goals. But we’ve scored goals at the Nou Camp before from corners and crosses!“

LINDELOF READY TO TAKE ON CHELSEA

Victor Lindelof has learned some valuable lessons from playing regularly at the heart of the Manchester United defence this season.

Our Swedish centre-back thrives on playing in big matches – and Sunday’s significant clash against top-four rivals Chelsea certainly falls into that bracket.

“Every match is huge for us,” the Reds’ no.2 told United Review in an exclusive interview with the matchday programme.

“For me, I always want to play in the big games against the top teams. That’s what you work for every day and what you dream about when you’re younger, to play these kinds of games. I live for these matches.”

‘WE KNEW HOW TO DEFEND AGAINST THEM’

We are unbeaten in our previous two games against Chelsea this term, which both took place at Stamford Bridge, with Victor playing in each encounter.

Of his memories of October’s 2-2 draw in the Premier League, he told United Review: “We deserved the win there. We performed well, but that’s football. They got a last-minute goal [through Ross Barkley] and it is what it is, but if you look back at that game, we performed well for most of it. We can take a lot of good things with us from that game.”

Lindelof felt United executed their gameplan to perfection to emerge with a 2-0 victory in the Emirates FA Cup at Chelsea's home in February.

“That was also a great match for us,” he opined. “Tactically, we knew exactly what we wanted to do and how to defend against them, and to find spaces to play around their pressing game. It was a very good game for us and the fact we won made it a very good night.”

‘WE’LL BE READY FOR THIS GAME’

A victory in our penultimate home game of the season will move Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side level on points with Maurizio Sarri’s fourth-placed Blues heading into our final two games, against Huddersfield Town away and Cardiff City at Old Trafford.

Chelsea have struggled on the road of late – and at the Theatre of Dreams in recent seasons – but Victor needs no reminding of the threat the west London outfit can pose and insists the Reds will be prepared for the battle ahead.

“They’re just a very good team with some fantastic players,” the 24-year-old said. “Even if they have a bad day, they still have very good individual players who can create chances from almost nothing.

“They’re very good in possession so you have to be really focused when you’re defending. You can’t give them too much space. They’re a good team but we’ll be ready for this game.”

‘YOU HAVE TO STAY CLOSE TO HAZARD’

Of course, the Blues possess the talent of Eden Hazard, who has the most assists in the league so far this season. However, Victor is well aware of how to approach the challenge of defending against the Belgian superstar.

“Don’t give him too much space because he will do something great, he’s a fantastic player. He’s shown that for a lot of years now. You have to stay close to him and don’t let him have any space with the ball facing our goal.”

LINDELOF IN FAVOUR OF WINTER BREAK

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof believes the introduction of a winter break in 2019/20 will be a positive thing for the Premier League.

The forthcoming campaign will be the first one in England's top tier to feature a mid-season pause, which will take place over two weeks in February, with 10 sides sitting out the first weekend of the month and the remaining clubs having their downtime a week later.

A winter break is commonplace in most of Europe’s top leagues, and Lindelof, who signed for United two years ago today, believes it will only help the players and clubs in the Premier League.

“I think it’s good actually,” Lindelof told MUTV, in an interview at the end of the 2018/19 season.

“I think, if you look at the other countries, they always have a winter break and I think it’s important for the mind and the body as well to get a little bit of rest so you can keep going and work hard throughout the season.

“So yeah, I’m all for it. I know in England we’ve always played a lot during the winter while others have rested a little bit, so I I think it’s going to be good. I think people will enjoy it.”

The Swede is currently having some time off ahead of the United squad's return for pre-season training in July. Lindelof says the first day back after the summer is always an enjoyable one at the Aon Training Complex.

“Well there’s a lot of excitement of course, because we haven’t seen each other for a long time,” he said.

“It’s always nice to see all the players and you know everyone is just excited to get started again, to work hard and get ready for the season.”

The 2019/20 campaign seems that little bit closer for the Reds after Thursday’s Premier League fixture announcement. But while it's always an eagerly anticipated day for the fans, Lindelof has a typically cool response.

“To be honest with you, I never really look at the fixtures list,” our no.2 admitted.

“I just try to focus on my team and myself [in training] and then when the next match is coming, I think 'okay, we’re going to play against them.' Then I start focusing on that game.”

Victor Lindelof insists he is happy to stay at Manchester United despite being linked with a move to Barcelona.

Lindelof's agent Hasan Cetinkaya fuelled the speculation last week by saying: 'Lindelof is in the orbit of a great European club, but leaving United depends on the English club.'

But the Sweden international dismissed the transfer talk as he prepared to face Leeds in Perth on Wednesday in United's second game on tour.

He said: 'I'm very happy to be a Manchester player and I'm really looking forward to this season to start. I'm very happy here.'

Lindelof was United's best centre back last season after a difficult first campaign following his £31million move from Benfica.

'I always felt like a Manchester United player but last season was a better one for me,' he added. 'I performed better than my first, pretty sure.

LINDELOF: THE KEY TO UNITED'S SOLID START

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof believes the key to the Reds' solid start to the season is the competition for places and the additional energy within the team.

The Sweden international was part of an unchanged back-four at Wolves last Monday, starting alongside new recruit Harry Maguire in the middle of the defence.

Although Eric Bailly is injured, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Axel Tuanzebe are competing for places and this is helping to ensure the Scandinavian remains on his toes.

“We have very good players in the squad and everyone wants to play,” Lindelof told MUTV in an exclusive interview. “In the first two games, we’ve been playing that back five [David De Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire and Luke Shaw] and have been performing well but it’s hard because you always have to perform well.

”It’s because there is always someone there who wants to play but that’s part of football. It’s very important for us and good for the team to have that.

“It’s very important for a team to have competition for places. If you don’t have that, then maybe you don’t push yourself to the next level. It’s what we’re doing every day right now and also what will take us to the next level, I think.”

Lindelof believes the hard work in pre-season is enabling United to display greater fitness levels and stamina in the Premier League.

The Reds ended both the 4-0 win against Chelsea and 1-1 draw at Wolves strongly, to suggest the players are capable of keeping up such intensity throughout matches.

“We worked very hard [in the summer] and you can see that in the games as well,” added our no.2. “We run much more now and have the capability of sprinting at high speed, even in the 80th or 90th minute. It’s very important to be able to do it in football. It’s been great.

”I think the fans are always behind us and we have been improving a lot. I reckon we can improve even more under Ole and the other staff. I think we work very hard for each other as a team and run a lot. I think that is what the fans want to see.“

'I played a horrible game': Victor Lindelof criticises HIMSELF after Manchester United defender's poor form continued during Sweden's Euro 2020 qualifier stalemate with Norway

* Victor Lindelof has criticised his own performance as Sweden drew with Norway
* The centre half insisted he should have controlled the game much more
* Sweden still remain on course to qualify from Group F for Euro 2020
* Lindelof's United form and partnership with Harry Maguire is under scrutiny

Victor Lindelof pulled no punches after Sweden's 1-1 stalemate with Norway in Euro 2020 qualifying, and placed the blame firmly at his own doorstep.

The Manchester United man, who is frequently the bedrock of the Swedish defence, immediately admitted after the final whistle that he did not grasp the game enough.

Lindelof's form has recently been called into question at Old Trafford, and now it appears his under-performing has permeated onto the international stage.

'I think I played a horrible game,' Lindelof told Norwegian outlet VG Sporten after the match.

'I have high standards. I think I just had two passes forward. I should have controlled the game more but I didn't.

'Everything was bad from our side. We had all the preconditions to play a good game.

The central defender has endured a slow start to the season with his form being questioned. Lindelof's partnership with £80m man Harry Maguire is yet to fully click at Old Trafford

'We played at home, with fantastic fans, against Norway, but we lose two points. Why? I have no idea.'

Sweden had gone behind in the tie after Stefan Johansen scored on the cusp of half-time.

Returning slightly fired up, the hosts levelled the score-line on the hour mark after Emil Forsberg pulled Sweden level.

The result sees Lindelof and Sweden sit second in Group F on 11 points from six matches played.

Spain dominate the group after going on a 100 per cent winning record and sweeping aside all opponents to date.

Lindelof will soon return to domestic club duties, where questions have already started to be asked about his partnership with the world's most expensive defender Harry Maguire.

The pair were hoped to immediately click after Maguire's £80million arrival, but United have won only one game so far this season, having drawn with Wolves and Southampton while suffering a home humiliation to Crystal Palace.

'His DNA, is very close to Barcelona's way of playing': Victor Lindelof topped Barcelona's shortlist of defensive options but United refused to let their man go in the summer, says his agent

* Victor Lindelof was on the top of Barcelona's shopping list for defensive cover
* The 25-year-old's agent has revealed that Spanish giants were keen to sign him
* Barcelona's interest peaked shortly after Matthijs de Ligt rejected them
* However, Manchester United were unwilling to let the Swedish star leave
Victor Lindelof's agent has revealed that Barcelona made a number of offers to secure the services of the Swedish international in this summer's transfer window.

The 25-year-old is said to have been at the top of the Spanish giant's list of defensive options shortly after they were snubbed by highly-sought after defender Matthijs de Ligt, who opted to join Juventus.

According to Lindelof's agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, Barcelona officials quickly turned their attention to the United defender, however the Old Trafford club refused to let their key defender leave the club.

'Lindelof was perhaps Man Utd's best player last season, and there was a lot of interest from clubs that are even better (than United) at the moment,' he told Aftonbladet.

'When Matthijs de Ligt chose Juventus, Victor was pronounced Barcelona's first choice.

'His way of playing, his DNA, is very close to Barcelona's way of playing. He is one of the world's best centre backs with the ball at his feet, and Barcelona wanted him. That's how it was. I can talk about that now.

Barcelona are said to have made Victor Lindelof a priority transfer target in the summer. The Spanish club's attention turned to Lindelof after Matthijs de Ligt sealed a move to Juventus. United refused to let the 25-year-old go and agreed a contract extension with the defender

'They contacted Ed Woodward on numerous occasions with concrete offers. I had a meeting with their transfer manager, Matt Judge, to try to make a transition. But they just said: "There is no chance. Victor is one of our best players".'

As such, Lindelof penned a contract extension with United, despite having three years remaining on his previous deals, signalling Solskjaer's intentions to keep the defender in his first team plans for the foreseeable.

'Usually, they do not make extensions with players who have so long left on the contract, but when there was an interest at this level they had no other option,' Cetinkaya said.

Lindelof and his United team-mates will be hoping to get their season back on track after last weekend's humiliating away defeat to West Ham as they host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday night.

'Even if I did not agree, at the time…he has very great charisma, you had great respect for him. He's won everything. When he says something, you listen.'

Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Manchester United in December 2018.

The Portuguese tactician will be one of the favourites to replace Unai Emery should the Arsenal boss lose his job.

'If you defend like that against them you have no chance': Darren Fletcher slams 'poor' Victor Lindelof for his abysmal play in build up to Manchester City's second goal in victory over Manchester United

* Pep Guardiola's side have one foot in the Carabao Cup final following their win
* Victor Lindelof came in for plenty of criticism after his display at Old Trafford
* The Swede was at fault for City's second after giving the ball away in build-up

Victor Lindelof has been slammed by Darren Fletcher for his costly error in the build up to Manchester City's second goal of the night after United were convincingly beaten 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola's side humiliated United in the opening period on Tuesday night, with Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez both getting onto the scoresheet before Andreas Pereira put through his own net.

And at half-time, former Red Devils star Fletcher tore into Lindelof for his role in City's second goal.

Victor Lindelof was slammed by Darren Fletcher after Manchester United lost 3-1 to rivals City. Former United midfielder Fletcher tore into Lindelof for his mistake in build up to City's second

After giving the ball away cheaply from a header following a battle in the air with Mahrez, the Swedish international failed to get back into position in time as the Algerian rounded David de Gea before slotting home into the empty net.

Fletcher, who claims the centre back should have been more convincing in the air against Mahrez initially, told Sky Sports: 'Lindelof was poor. You are not playing against a Premier League striker.

'That is Riyad Mahrez. He ambles back, he slides and doesn't help De Gea.

'It is a poor header but what is your recovery like? That is jogging back and they have been punished. If you defend like that against Manchester City you have no chance.

'If you make mistakes against Man City you get punished.'

Following the game, he certainly wasn't any more sympathetic, insisting he was 'lazy' getting back into position following his initial mistake.

'It is Mahrez, not a Deeney or a physical forward,' Fletcher added regarding Lindelof's mistake at Old Trafford.

'It is a poor header but what annoyed me the most is that lazy jog afterwards. Just get back goal side as quick as possible.

'It is not good enough. He is just ambling back, he will be disappointed with that.'

Lindelof direkrut Man United pada musim panas 2017.

Sejak musim debutnya, Lindelof langsung menjadi pemain inti The Red Devils.

Itulah tujuan utamaku."

Man United sedang menjalani tren negatif setelah gagal memenangi tiga pertandingan domestik terakhir.

VICTOR LINDELOF PRAISES DEFENSIVE DISPLAY

Victor Lindelof was pleased with how he and his Manchester United team-mates defended, as the Reds fought to a 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Lindelof was part of a back four that included Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, who all dealt with the challenges thrown at them by the tricky visitors. Shaw marshalled the tough assignment of marking Adama Traore, while Wan-Bissaka threw in some meaty slide-tackles to stop the visitors hitting us on the counter-attack.

In the middle, Victor made a crucial block in the first half to deny Raul Jimenez, after a decent cross into the danger zone from Wolves. The latest result is United's third clean sheet in a row and when Victor spoke to MUTV after the match, he reflected on another solid display at the back.

“Obviously, we wanted to win and get the three points, so it's a bit frustrating, but, overall, I thought we controlled the game well and they didn't create a lot of chances, and we kept another clean sheet. So we want to create a little bit more up front and to score a goal, but yeah, it is what it is.”

With Bruno Fernandes making his United bow, Lindelof, who also made the switch to Manchester from Portugal, was asked about what he thought of his new team-mate and how he had settled into his new surroundings in such a short period of time.

“It's not easy to come in here,” added the central defender. “I think he's had one training session, so to come in and play is not easy, but I think he did a good job and showed what kind of qualities he can give us. Hopefully now when we have the break he can train a bit more with the team, get to know all the players and then I think it's going to be much easier for him.”

Lindelof's defensive partnership with Maguire has continued to make progress since the turn of the year. The duo have played in all but one of United's Premier League fixtures this term and the Swede hopes they can maintain the run in the rest of the campaign.

“The more games you play together, the easier it gets,” added the Scandinavian. “He's a fantastic player and we train every day and play a lot of games now, so for every game that we play, we get better and better. Hopefully, we can keep improving and get to know each other even more and hopefully we can keep more clean sheets together.”

It is the end of a busy run of fixtures for United. Since the turn of the year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have played in 10 games in just over four weeks and Victor hopes that this small window without football will gives the players, some of whom have played in every game, a much-needed chance to recharge their batteries ahead of another relentless run-in to the end of the campaign.

“It's hard,” he conceded. “We've been playing a lot of games. So it's going to be nice to get a few days off to rest. We want to keep going, we've got to take this break to recharge our batteries, so we can come back even stronger for the second part of the season and, yeah, try to perform good football and win a lot of games, because that's our main goal, so we have to be clever when we have this break and use it well.”

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED: LINDELOF EDITION

Victor Lindelof is the latest Manchester United player to take time to answer your questions.

MUTV's Mark Sullivan put your various posers to the 'Iceman' while he was back home in his native Sweden, with our centre-back telling us about the best player he's ever played alongside, as well as what he listens to in the changing room before matches.

Cade Dunkley (UK) – What made you choose football over [ice] hockey?

“I think I love hockey as well but I love football even more. I think it was my love of the game that made me choose football over hockey. So it was a tough decision at the time but I felt, in my heart, I wanted to play football and that’s why I chose to play football instead of hockey. I love hockey as well, but football is closer to my heart.”

Zander Symon More – What’s the best feeling you’ve had in the dressing room after a game with United?

“The best feeling? Obviously, it’s a very nice feeling after we win games so, after we win the big games, it’s a very special feeling, of course, because everyone is very happy. We’ve put in a good effort for 90 minutes and then to get the result you want, everyone is very, very happy. Obviously, when we win big games, like the derby, let’s say for example, or after the PSG game that was also a very, very good moment in the dressing room. Everyone was obviously happy that we’d got through to the next phase and knocked out a good opponent so that one. But after every big game, it’s a very nice feeling.”

Miguel Rubio (Colombia) – What is your favourite moment of the season so far?

“We had some good games but, before the season stopped, we had a good run where we had some very good results. So it’s not easy to pick just one moment. There have been a few good games, like I said before, we had a good run before the season stopped. With that, I think I would say the best is yet to come, I think.”

Charlie Roberts (UK) – What is your favourite United moment of all time?

“Well, the same there. We had a few good moments and have been winning some big games but I haven’t won a title yet. I’ll wait until I win a first title and then I can answer that question.”

Aditya (India) – What’s been your best achievement at United?

“The same there. I’ve been performing well and helped the team but, like I answered in the question before, I want to win something so it will be easier to answer that question after we’ve won a big trophy. It’s always been my goal and the goal of every player who represents United. I want to wait until we win my first big trophy.”

Daniel (Faroe Islands) – What advice would you give young footballers?

“My advice for young footballers is, when you’re younger, just enjoy the game; play it a lot with your friends and practise. When you get older, my advice is to listen to others, like older players and coaches who have been in your place and know what you have to do to get to the next level. That would be my best advice.”

Remi Porche (UK) – What impact has Ole had at the club?

“Of course, Ole is very important for myself and all the players. He’s the boss and makes the decisions on how he wants us to play. He helps us a lot in the daily training and stuff so it’s been great. Hopefully, we can keep improving under him and get some good results in the future. That’s what everyone wants and is working hard for.”

Max Beka (Ethiopia) – What are your three favourite songs to listen to before matches?

“Wow, I listen to a lot of music, different kinds of music – hip-hop, indie-pop and Swedish hip-hop. If I have to pick three songs, I’ll go for a song called Showstopper with Mona, a Swedish artist. And then I would pick the Fool’s Gold remix with Rebecca and Fiona. It’s a nice remix and when Derek Pope starts to sign, I really feel the music. Then the third one I have to go with is a song from a Swedish artist called Fricky. It’s called ‘Hon Fa Mig’. Yeah, that’s three songs but there’s a fourth one as well. My friend Sami, a Swedish artist, released a new album recently which I listen to before games.”

Mohamed (American Samoa) – Who is the best player you’ve played with?

“I’ve played with some really good players but, if I have to pick one, I’ll go for Zlatan. I think he’s a great player and I got the chance to play with him in the national team and also in United. He’s the best player.”

Tom Barker (UK) – How have you found it playing alongside Harry Maguire – do you think you’ve improved each other’s games?

“Well, yeah, it’s been great playing with Harry a lot this season. It’s very important to play a lot of games together and you learn a lot from each other. The more games you play, the better you get as players and so it’s been great as we’ve been helping each other a lot and getting some good results. I think we’ve been improving lately as well, before the break, we had a lot of clean sheets and performed well. It’s been great but I’ve played with some others as well this season and we have some really good players in that position. It’s always a pleasure to play alongside everyone. But I’ve played with Harry a lot this season and it’s been great.”

'I've been away playing the World Cup, the Euros, everything': Victor Lindelof insists Manchester United stars are unfazed by Cologne lockdown... with his side set for two-week stay if they make Europa League final

* Manchester United are locked down in their own bubble while out in Cologne
* Club are bidding to win the delayed Europa League, now in fresh format
* Victor Lindelof says the conditions do not faze stars because of experience
* United will have spent two weeks locked down if they make Europa League final

Manchester United players have enough experience of international tournaments to cope with a 13-day lockdown in Cologne, insists Victor Lindelof.

United's win over Copenhagen in the Europa League quarter-finals on Monday night means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players will be staying in Germany for at least another six days.

If they beat the winners of Tuesday night's tie between Wolves and Sevilla in the semis this weekend, United will play in the final in Cologne on August 21 - meaning they will have been there just short of two weeks.

Coronavirus safety protocols mean the United squad must remain in a 'bubble' and can only leave their hotel for matches and training sessions.

But Sweden defender Lindelof says the players are used to being confined while representing their national teams at the World Cup and other tournaments.

'It's going to be fine,' he said. 'I think all the players have been playing tournaments. I've been away playing the World Cup, the Euros and everything.

'Even if we're not able to leave the hotel at the moment, we have things to do there so I think it will be fine. No problem at all.'

Victor Lindelof says Manchester United players are drawing upon their tournament experience. United are through to the semi-final stage where they will face Sevilla

Sportsmail revealed that UEFA have allocated United the training facilities at fourth division Fortuna Koln or a third division alternative now they are staying on in Cologne.

Solskjaer admitted that the situation is not ideal, although United at least have an extra day to prepare for the semi-final against Wolves or Sevilla.

'The facilities are not the same as we're used to, but that is no excuse. Every team has the same conditions,' said the United boss.

'We're used to having the best facilities around the world for recovery and preparation, and we just have to make the most out of a difficult situation in conditions that are hot and humid.

'But we've got six days to prepare for a game. There's not many times we have that.'

Lindelof admitted that United weren't at their best against Copenhagen, needing a penalty from Bruno Fernandes in extra-time to go through.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer is bidding to win European silverware at the end of his first full season

The humid conditions didn't help and fatigue also appeared to play a part.. It was United's 60th game of season that began a year ago on Tuesday.

'It was a tough game but we came through in the end and we're happy for that,' added Lindelof. 'We knew what kind of team they were and I think they made it difficult for us, even if we didn't play at our level.

'It's very difficult to say just why. It happens sometimes football. Of course, it's been a long season but we played a quarter-final in a European cup so I think everyone had to be ready for that.

'It happens sometimes in football that you don't perform at the level you want to. But the important thing is that we won and we're through to the semi-finals.

'I think we could have done a lot of things better but when we had the ball they made it difficult for us. Sometimes they pressed high and when they didn't they dropped deep and defended compact as a unit. It was hard to create some chances there but I think we should have scored a few more goals.'

United lost in the semi-finals of the FA Cup to Chelsea and Carabao Cup to Manchester City, but Lindelof believes there is enough confidence in the camp now to go one better - whichever team they face on Sunday.

'It's always been our goal to win this competition,' he said. 'We've been playing a few semi-finals this season and hopefully we can win the next game and get through to the final.

'I think we have a lot of confidence in the team right now. We've been performing on a very high level, especially after the league ended. We got the third spot and we've been performing some really, really good football. I think everybody has a lot of confidence and we know we can do some great things.

'Obviously even if we play against Sevilla or Wolves, they are two tough teams but we're going to be ready and hopefully we can go out and play a really good game.'

Victor Lindelof turns local hero after 'hunting down thief who stole elderly woman's purse' in Swedish city Vasteras... as Manchester United man finds himself in the news for the right reasons following defensive partner Harry Maguire's arrest

* Manchester United's Victor Lindelof has reportedly performed a heroic deed
* The defender is back in his native Sweden for the short end of season break
* Local reports claim Lindelof prevented the robbery of an elderly woman's purse
* Lindelof is said to have 'hunted down' the offender before retrieving the item

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof had a contrasting week to his centre back partner Harry Maguire as he reportedly carried out a heroic deed in his native Sweden by coming to the aid of an elderly woman.

The 26-year-old is briefly back in his home city of Vasteras in Sweden during football's short summer break before the season re-starts, and this week was present as a frightening event unfolded.

While Maguire was arrested and charged following allegations of involvement in a fight while holidaying on the Greek island of Mykonos, Lindelof turned the hero in a different altercation back at home.

Swedish daily publication Aftonbladet report that Lindelof was on hand to 'hunt down' a thief after seeing a 90-year-old woman have her purse snatched.

Lindelof is said to have sprinted off after the offender, before tracking them down and keeping them pinned to the ground.

Police services were called and arrived on the scene, to find Lindelof having apprehended the individual.

A local police report on the incident read: 'A man who was nearby must have run after the suspected perpetrator, caught up with him and kept him until the police arrived at the scene.'

https://i.postimg.cc/5N0dCCbL/32323558-8659163-image-a-1-1598284854923.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Victor Lindelof is reportedly a local hero after apprehending a man who robbed an old lady

Eye witnesses have since given their confirmation that the man in question was United star Lindelof, which was also hinted by a local police officer.

Though he would not confirm the identity of the hero of the hour, the police officer said in the statement: 'The man who intervened very wisely was athletically built, I can not say more than that.'

It marks quite different publicity to that generated by centre back partner Maguire following his end-of-season holiday in Greece.

Maguire is accused of assaulting local police officers after his 20-year-old sister, Daisy, was assaulted and injured with a sharp object according to Greek media. It is understood that the police attending the scene were dressed in plain clothes and not easily identifiable as officers.

One source has said that initial accusation of bribery has now been dropped and that Maguire was simply attempting to pay an on the spot fine to deal with the situation.

Maguire denied all allegations though he made a statement of apology to the court on Saturday. Maguire had been staying on Mykonos with his fiancee Fern Hawkins and their children as well as other family members.

Lindelof is reported to have been out with his wife Maja, who is said to have witnessed the incident unfold.

Vasteras police state they received the alarm at around 10.40, and that the first police patrol arrived about five minutes later, at approximately 10.45.

Lindelof therefore was able to keep the offender in place for five minutes before officers could arrive and do their job.

The offender - a man in his 30s - is now suspected of aggravated theft and minor drug offences for his own use.

Lindelof is soon due back in Manchester to meet up with his team-mates, ahead of the 2020-21 season.

The 26-year-old was part of the United squad who traveled to Cologne to compete in the latter stages of the Europa League, only to be knocked out by Sevilla in the semi-finals.

During the tournament Lindelof showed he wasn't somebody to be messed with, after becoming embroiled in a heated argument with his own team-mate and United's star midfielder Bruno Fernandes, following a disagreement in the Sevilla tie.

'I do not know what it is due to': Victor Lindelof is baffled by Manchester United's terrible start to the season but believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's struggling side are close to hitting form

* Manchester United are 16th in the Premier League after an awful start this term
* Victor Lindelof has said he can't put his finger on why United have been so bad
* Lindelof does believe, however, that he and his team-mates will find form soon

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has admitted that he can't pinpoint why he and his team-mates have started the season so badly.

United are 16th in the Premier League having won once and lost twice.

Lindelof has himself faced criticism for individual errors, particularly in the 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in which he gave away a penalty and produced a generally poor performance.

The Sweden international didn't, however, have anything to do with United's 6-1 hammering by Tottenham after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dropped him for Eric Bailly.

'It has not been the best start for us in the league, I do not know what it is due to,' Lindelof told Swedish media outlet Afton Bladet.

'If it is because we played for a long time in Europe [last season] and did not get the rest you usually get, it is difficult to answer.'

Victor Lindelof can't explain why Manchester United have started the season so terribly

He also loosely suggested that United starting the season a week later than the majority of teams may have resulted in them being off the pace but said he expects an upturn as soon as the weekend when Solskaer's side travel to Newcastle.

Lindelof, who could play against team-mate Bruno Fernandes when Sweden meet Portugal in the Nations League on Wednesday night, added: 'We had one or two weeks together before the league started and we have not reached the level we have wanted.

'But I think that after this national team gathering, many are back and ready to perform at the level we can.'

Rio Ferdinand 'questions' whether Victor Lindelof is good enough to play for a 'top, top team' as he casts doubt on his long term suitability at Manchester United with defender 'more suited' to international football

* Victor Lindelof kicks off Euro 2020 campaign with Sweden vs Spain on Monday
* Defender is key man for Sweden but has been questioned at Manchester United
* Rio Ferdinand claimed Lindelof is more suited to international football than club
* The former United man admitted he 'questions' whether Lindelof suits 'top team'

Rio Ferdinand has claimed Victor Lindelof is more suited to international football and 'questions' whether the Manchester United defender is good enough to play for a 'top, top team'.

The 26-year-old kicked off his Euro 2020 campaign with Sweden against Spain on Monday evening and is a key figure for his country, but was unconvincing at times for Manchester United last season.

United are thought to be searching for another defender to partner Harry Maguire in central defence next season, and Ferdinand suggested the current partnership hasn't convinced enough to be the preferred option moving forward.

Rio Ferdinand thinks Victor Lindelof is more suited to international football and admitted he 'questions' whether the Man United star is convincing enough to play for a 'top, top team'

When asked about Lindelof ahead of Spain vs Sweden, Ferdinand told the BBC: 'I think his game suits the national game in a lot of ways. The Premier League is very quick and physical.

'This (international football) is more of a thinking-defenders' game and I think that definitely suits him. He's someone who likes to read and cover.

'With this team it seems like the main man in that defence and I think he's warmed to that. That suits him.

'When he plays in a yellow shirt he seems a very different player to the one I see in a Man United shirt.'

Lindelof (right) is Harry Maguire's (left) preferred partner at back but has been unconvincing. Ferdinand admitted he' questions' whether the partnership is convincing enough at top level

Lindelof started 45 times for United last season and was manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's preferred partner to captain Maguire when both were fit as they finished a respectable second place in the Premier League.

Despite this, question marks remain with United linked with moves for a host of centre backs this summer.

When asked by presenter Gary Lineker on whether he is good enough to play for United, Ferdinand responded: 'I just think there's question marks over his partnership with Maguire.

;Maguire has come in for big money, he's going to play.

'Does Lindelof compliment him enough for them to be a top, top team? I question that personally.'

Victor Lindelof's terrified wife and young children locked themselves in a room as intruders broke into the Manchester United star's home while he was playing at Brentford

* Victor Lindelof played the full game in Manchester United's victory at Brentford
* His house was broken into during the match, while his young family were home
* Maja Nilsson Lindelof, his wife, hid in a room with her young children
* The family have now jetted home to Sweden and Lindelof will miss United's game with West Ham

The terrified wife and young children of Manchester United star Victor Lindelof locked themselves in a room as intruders broke into their home, while he played in Wednesday's Premier League match against Brentford.

Maja Nilsson Lindelof was alone with their three-year-old boy Ted Louie and baby Francis when she realised someone was forcing their way into the house.

In an Instagram story, Lindelof's wife Maja said: 'During Victor's game this Wednesday night we had a break-in at our house in Manchester.

The centre back will be unavailable for United's fixture against West Ham tomorrow with the defender having returned to his homeland.

Lindelof is the second player to be targeted by burglars in recent weeks.

In December, thieves broke into the home of João Cancelo, the Manchester City right back. They attacked him in front of his family and stole jewellery. The defender suffered cuts and bruises to the face in the incident, which police are investigating.

United manager Ralf Rangnick has revealed he has discussed the incident with the centre back, and came to an agreement to allow the player to take time away.

'I spoke with him at length on our flight back home from London and also this morning we spoke for about 20 minutes, 25 minutes,' he said.

'He told me what had actually happened and that this was really a traumatic event, especially for his wife and even the three-year-old son.

'He said to me that he right now needs to stay at home.

'He doesn't want to leave his wife and his family on their own, which I can fully understand being a father of two children myself.

'We agreed that he will not be training today and also not be on duty tomorrow for the game.'

Wife Maja Nilsson Lindelof took to social media to reveal the extent of the traumatic moment

A United statement read: 'We can confirm that a break-in occurred at Victor Lindelof's house during the away game against Brentford.

'His family, who were at home at the time, were unhurt but clearly shaken. This was a distressing experience for them, and for Victor when he learned of it after the game, and the club is providing them with our full support.

'We encourage anyone with information about the crime to contact the police.'

Lindelof has endured a tough couple of months at Old Trafford. In December, the 27-year-old was forced off against Norwich due to worrying breathing difficulties.

Having visibly clutched his chest on the touchline during the second half of the clash at Carrow Road, the centre back soon underwent a series of examinations.

As part of these, he was fitted with a heart monitor, although United moved quickly when insisting that the condition was not linked to the Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

His wife admitted the couple were distressed in the wake of the episode.

'It was a scary match to watch and Victor was very cut up afterwards,' she wrote.

United manager Ralf Rangnick said he spoke to the player at length in the wake of the break-in

'Yesterday he did a lot of tests and has a heart monitor on for two days to make sure everything is OK.

'It was incredibly uncomfortable, especially when I did not get hold of him which I always manage to.

'It was a long time before I got hold of someone on the team who updated me.'

Worried team-mates rushed to his aid when he dropped to his haunches under no pressure, and medics also raced on to the pitch as he pointed to his chest.

Victor Lindelof insists he will fight for his place at Manchester United despite Erik ten Hag's side making an improved offer for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez

* Victor Lindelof says that he will stay and fight for his place at Manchester United
* United have made an improved offer of £43m for Ajax's Lisandro Martinez
* Lindelof also backed team-mate Harry Maguire to keep the captain's armband

Victor Lindelof has vowed to fight for his place at Manchester United after the club tabled an improved offer of £43million for Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez.

New manager Erik ten Hag wants to sign Martinez from his old club in Holland, but United face competition for the 24-year-old Argentine from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Ten Hag is hoping to strengthen in central defence with United prepared to listen to offers for Eric Bailly and Phil Jones this summer.

Lindelof finished last season as arguably United’s first-choice centre-back as Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane spent time on the bench, and the Swede says he would welcome the competition from another defender.

Defender Victor Lindelof has insisted that he will fight for his place at Manchester United. United have made an improved offer of £43million for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez. Lindelof has backed team-mate Harry Maguire to carry on as United's captain this season

Asked on United’s tour to Bangkok if he has been unnerved by talk of signing Martinez, Lindelof said: ‘I’m not a nervous person, I’m quite calm. I know what I can do on the pitch, I’ve been working very hard and that’s all I can focus on really.

‘I’m always confident. At every club like this there should be competition for places, that’s a very good thing. You need it to perform and to compete for trophies. This is my sixth year, I’ve made almost 200 appearances now, I want to do many more and I want to help the team on the pitch.

‘I’ve been playing quite a lot of games. Even if I have a bad day, I think I can perform at a high level and I think my teammates can trust me as well on the pitch.’

Lindelof took his opportunity last season following Maguire’s loss of form as the United captain faced questions over his suitability to wear the armband.

Ten Hag has yet to say whether Maguire will remain as skipper before Tuesday’s opening tour game against Liverpool in Bangkok, but Lindelof backed the England defender to continue doing the job.

‘Harry is a great player and a great captain as well,’ he added. ‘He is a very nice guy off the pitch. He tries to talk a lot and communicate with the players and I think he is a great player.

‘It’s normal if you are the captain of the biggest club in the world that people outside will speak, but I don’t think it’s a problem for him and I think everyone trusts him as well.’

Ten Hag was brought in following United’s worst ever Premier League campaign, and Lindelof has welcomed the intensity of training under the new manager during his first two weeks of pre-season.

‘We haven’t really spoken about last season, that is in the past,’ he said. ‘Everyone was very disappointed in the way we performed and where we were in the table.

‘But everyone is professional. There are going to be ups and downs, but we haven’t talked about it and we just want to look forward now.

‘It has been absolutely fantastic under the new boss since he came. The level of the training has really stepped up. I think he is very good at paying attention to the details – his demands and what he expects from us. If something is not right in an exercise he can stop and explain it again for us and that’s a very good thing for us.

‘The first week was a little bit different from this week. This week has been a bit more intense with different types of runs and in games. I don’t mind it, it should be like that. He’s demanding a lot, but it should be like that at a club like this.’
