Manchester United full of confidence ahead of Champions League clash with Sevilla says Nemanja Matic

* Nemanja Matic believes the Liverpool win will be a huge confidence boost
* Man United face Sevilla on Tuesday in 'most important game of the season'
* Matic also praised Scott McTominay as 'one of the best players on the pitch'

Nemanja Matic believes victory against bitter rivals Liverpool is a timely boost ahead of Manchester United's biggest game of the season against Sevilla.

The Champions League last-16 clash is evenly poised ahead of Tuesday's return leg after David De Gea inspired Jose Mourinho's men to a goalless draw in Spain.

United have won three straight matches since the first-leg draw, with morale-boosting successes against Chelsea and Crystal Palace complemented by Saturday's 2-1 triumph over Liverpool.

Marcus Rashford's first-half brace proved the difference as United increased their stranglehold on second spot in the Premier League and got a key week off to a flying start, with the FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton following Sevilla's visit.

'Very important,' defensive midfielder Matic said of the Liverpool win. 'Very important for our confidence to win this sort of game. We won against Chelsea and of course (on Saturday), so confidence will be on a high level, for sure.

'We have to see what we did well to continue like this. We have to know where we made mistakes to improve.

'The next game is very important for us, maybe the most important game of the season. We have to beat Sevilla to go through, so we give our best.'

Nemanja Matic believes the win vs Liverpool will be a confidence boost before Sevilla match. Manchester United held off a Liverpool resurgence in the second half to win the game 2-1

Matic hopes to make the United fans proud again on Tuesday after a ruthless first-half display at Old Trafford, where things would have been far less nervy had Juan Mata managed to make it 3-0 with an acrobatic attempt.

'We managed to score two very quick goals thanks to Marcus Rashford,' the Serbia midfielder said. 'It was a great first half, especially.

'After that, we tried to defend our advantage, which we managed to do. We had also the in the first half (a chance) to finish the game and make it 3-0 but we didn't use our chance.

'They didn't use some chances also but, in the end, the most important thing is three points.'

Another victory brought more praise for Scott McTominay.

The 21-year-old produced another sturdy performance in midfield with Matic, who has made no secret of his admiration for the academy graduate.

'Scott is fantastic,' he added. 'It is a joy to play next to him. He fights for the team, he runs a lot.

'He plays like he already played five or six years in the Premier League, but he's still young.

'He's fantastic. He was one of the best players on the pitch, so I am happy that we have him in the team, and he needs to continue in this way.'

Matic's post-match emotion contrasted starkly with those at Liverpool, who pushed to the final whistle after Eric Bailly's own goal gave them a lifeline.

For goalkeeper Loris Karius, it was a frustrating afternoon and a first half to learn from.

'In the second half we did well but the first half of course was not really good so it's frustrating in the end, because you ask yourself why we didn't play as good (as we did in the) second half after the game,' he told his club's website.

'That's our own fault, we have to ask ourselves that question. It's not easy to get something here if you only play good for one half so, of course, it's disappointing.

'At the end, we could still get a point, but the first half wasn't really good from us. We didn't defend the counter-attack so good when they had their moments.'

MOURINHO'S UPDATE ON MARTIAL AND POGBA

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Anthony Martial is fit and available to play in Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League last-16, second leg tie against Sevilla at Old Trafford on Tuesday, although it remains to be seen if Paul Pogba is available to face the La Liga side.

Pogba missed the weekend’s important Premier League victory over Liverpool due to a small injury, which the France international unfortunately picked up at the Aon Training Complex on Friday.

Paul was not pictured at training on Monday morning but, when asked about the midfielder during the following pre-match press conference, Mourinho revealed the player joined the session later on.

“He did [train] after you left,” Jose told the press, before the boss was then asked if Pogba could face Sevilla. "I don't know. We don't know yet, but he trained a little bit after you left.”

United defenders Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are all expected to miss the game, while central midfielder Ander Herrera is also unavailable due to injury.

It remains to seen how Zlatan Ibrahimovic is and whether he might be involved, after the Swedish striker was pictured training with the group on Monday morning. He has been working hard on his fitness, since making his last Reds appearance in the 2-2 draw against Burnley on Boxing Day.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PREVIEW: UNITED V SEVILLA

Setting the scene: A place in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League is up for grabs in the second of three crucial home games in succession for Jose Mourinho's men, who welcome Sevilla to Old Trafford on Tuesday night for the decisive second leg in the last-16 tie. After a goalless first-leg in Andalucia three weeks ago, it's winner takes all at the Theatre of Dreams as the Reds look to reach the last eight of Europe's elite competition for the first time since 2014.

How can I watch it? Tuesday's big match kicks off at 19:45 GMT and will be broadcast live on BT Sport in the UK. MUTV subscribers will be able to watch build-up from 17:45 GMT on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full from midnight. You can also follow the action as it happens via ManUtd.com’s live match blog and @ManUtd on Twitter.

What’s the team news? The boss has confirmed that Anthony Martial is fit to return following a two-game absence through injury, after the Frenchman and Zlatan Ibrahimovic trained on Monday morning. Paul Pogba was involved later in Monday's session at the Aon Training Complex, but Mourinho is unsure yet whether he will be able to face Sevilla. Fellow midfielder Marouane Fellaini could be pushing for a start after returning as a substitute against Liverpool following a speedy recovery from knee surgery. Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera have also missed recent matches. Meanwhile, Sevilla will be without former Manchester City player Jesus Navas, who wasn't included in the 22-man squad that travelled to Manchester because of an injury to his right calf.

How have we been doing? United enter the game on the back of a morale-boosting run of three consecutive wins in the Premier League. The Reds came from behind to beat both Chelsea and Crystal Palace before seeing off arch rivals Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday - a crucial victory which consolidated second place in the league. Now, attention turns to further progression in Europe and the Reds will be confident of maintaining our strong home form, having won all five games at Old Trafford in all competitions so far in 2018.

What about Sevilla? The Andalusian side, who won the Europa League in three successive seasons prior to the Reds’ triumph last term, have won two and lost two of their four games since the first leg on 21 February. They currently sit fifth in La Liga, but their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season were dealt a blow at the weekend after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to fourth-placed Valencia. Prior to that, Vincenzo Montella's men had recorded back-to-back league wins - 1-0 away at Malaga and 2-0 at home to Athletic Club - which helped to make up for the disappointment of a 5-2 loss at home to second-placed Atletico Madrid.

What happened in the first leg? David De Gea was undoubtedly the stand-out performer as the Reds played out a goalless draw in southern Spain three weeks ago to keep the tie alive. The Spaniard, back in his homeland, made several key saves including a stunning one-handed stop to keep out Luis Muriel's close-range header on the stroke of half-time to ensure that it's all to play for in the second leg at Old Trafford.

One to watch: One man who has been in form of late for the visitors is Pablo Sarabia. The Spanish midfielder had only scored once prior to the turn of the year, but has since netted five goals in Sevilla’s last eight matches and has become one of their top goal scorers in the process. He will be hoping to replicate this form in the Champions League, where he is yet to score a goal.

How are Sevilla doing? The Spaniards currently sit in fifth position in La Liga, one place worse off than where they finished last season. Since playing United three weeks ago, Sevilla have lost one and won two of their three league matches. A 5-2 defeat at home to Atletico Madrid was followed up with a 1-0 away win over Malaga and a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao. A victory against United would put them into the last eight for the first time since 1958.

What’s our record like against Spanish opposition? The Reds have largely struggled against teams from Spain in Europe, winning just 13 of our previous 51 games. But United will have fond memories of the last occasion we welcomed a Spanish side to Old Trafford - in May last year when the Reds booked a place in the UEFA Europa League final as a 1-1 draw completed a 2-1 aggregate win over Celta Vigo in the semi-finals of the competition.

Did you know? Tuesday's game will be the first time that Sevilla have visited Old Trafford for a competitive European fixture. However, they did take part in Rio Ferdinand's testimonial back in August 2013, winning 3-1.

Who’s the referee? Danny Makkelie will take charge of his first United game and lead a Dutch team of officials on Tuesday night. The 35-year-old, from Willemstad, has already handled four Champions League matches this term - including games involving Liverpool, Chelsea and Celtic during the group stage.

When is the quarter-final draw? Should United progress, the draw for the last eight of the Champions League is set to take place at 11:00 GMT on Friday 16 March. The draw will be streamed live on UEFA's website and broadcast on BT Sport in the UK. The Reds will be hoping to join Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Juventus in the quarter-finals.

Rivals Watch: Following the four ties that were played last week, there are four more last-16 games taking place this week. Here's the full fixture list:

Tuesday 13 March
Manchester United v Sevilla
Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk

Wednesday 14 March
Besiktas v Bayern Munich
Barcelona v Chelsea

All games will kick off at 19:45 GMT.

KEY QUOTES: JOSE'S PRESS CONFERENCE

Jose Mourinho addressed the media on Monday afternoon ahead of Manchester United’s decisive UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg against Sevilla.

The boss discussed a wide range of topics in his press conference at Old Trafford, including Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford and the challenge facing the Reds on Tuesday night. Read the main points below…

SEVILLA CLASH MORE IMPORTANT THAN LIVERPOOL
“Tomorrow is more important than Saturday [against Liverpool] because Saturday was a match for points that we still have 24 more points to discuss, 24 more points to try to finish in the top four, to try to finish third, to try to finish second if possible. But tomorrow and Saturday [against Brighton] are the matches where, in the end, you go to the next draw or you don't go to the next draw. So, of course, knockout becomes more important than league matches.”

WE HAVE NO ADVANTAGE AGAINST SEVILLA
“I don't think we are one of the best teams in the competition. But I think when a team arrives in the last eight, anything can happen. I think when you are in the last 16, it looks really, really far. But when a team gets in the last eight, you start smelling semi-finals and I think when a team gets into the last eight, the feeling is, of course, you are among the best. But anything can happen, so let's see what happens tomorrow. I think tomorrow is a very difficult match. I think we’re playing against a team that didn't lose against Liverpool home and away - scored goals in Liverpool and drew the match in Liverpool and when I say Liverpool, it's an example of a very good team and an example of an important stadium with big tradition. When I say Liverpool, it is just to say that Sevilla is a really good team and the result of the first leg is a result that leaves everything open for tomorrow. I don't feel that we have any advantage in this moment. We are going to try to prove that we are better [than the first leg] and to try to win the match tomorrow. But the reality in this moment is that we have no advantage at all.”

REACHING THE LAST EIGHT WOULD BE A GOOD ACHIEVEMENT
“I think the Europa League final was internationally our most important match in the last years because we won the competition and that victory brought us to Manchester United's natural habitat, which is the Champions League. I think Manchester United has to be a team of the Champions League, so that victory last season was very important for us because we finished outside the top four in the Premier League and, by winning the Europa League, we won a title and at the same time, we went back to the Champions League. If we manage to win the tie and go to the last eight, I think it's a good achievement. But I think if we go to the last eight, life goes on and life goes on means that we will have hypothetically a quarter-final tie - we don't go to the quarter-finals thinking that we have no chance. Not at all. But the biggest problem we have in this moment and that we have to resolve has only one name and that name is Sevilla.”

MCTOMINAY IS A GOOD LEARNER
“He's playing well. He's using every minute on the pitch and outside the pitch to learn. He's humble - he wants to learn. He doesn't want headlines or flashes. He just wants to work, improve and be useful for his team. He was progressively getting chances to play. He got the injuries of Michael Carrick, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Paul] Pogba, [Ander] Herrera - basically all of the midfield players had one injury during the season and he was getting minutes and getting experience. The best way to improve is to be on the pitch, of course, but he's a good learner and I remember his beginnings when sometimes he was not even on the bench but I was taking him with the team as the extra player. I remember clearly him in the meetings, in the dressing room at half-time eating every word, listening to every thing. So I think his humble nature is what is making him a good player for us.”

‘I’M REALLY HAPPY WITH RASHFORD’
“I read some quotes from the worst manager in the history of the Premier League. Frank de Boer [at Crystal Palace]. Five games and five defeats and zero goals. He was saying that it's not good for Marcus Rashford to have a coach like me because the most important thing for me is to win. If he was coached by Frank, he would learn how to lose because he lost every game. Of course, Marcus - I have to be honest and give the credit to the people of the Academy that was responsible for his formation. I have to give the credit to Mr [Louis] Van Gaal who was responsible for his first season in the first team. I'm really happy - probably I think that Gareth Southgate doesn't mind that. He plays for Manchester United many, many matches. Does he play every match from the start? No, of course not. But he's a player that we trust and I told that before the Liverpool match where probably not many of you [the media] were expecting him to start. He started, he had a good match and I'm not just speaking about scoring goals because, for me, the analysis of a performance is much more than analysing the number of goals or assists. For me, the performance is globality and I'm really happy with Marcus.”

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION CHANGES ARE GOOD FOR ENGLISH CLUBS
“Because I work in England, I'm happy with that. I'm more than honest because I work in England and because the fourth position is hypothetically a position where we can finish the league, I'm very happy with that because it's better for an English club that finishes fourth. It's better than playing that last play-off, which is always a risk, and be already qualified. So I think, in this moment, the English teams that are fighting for the top four, I'm pretty sure that all of them – [Liverpool boss] Jurgen [Klopp] and [Chelsea boss Antonio] Conte - will feel the same as me. We are happy that the fourth team goes directly to the Champions League. It's good for us.”

MANCHESTER UNITED 1 SEVILLA 2

UEFA Champions League last-16 second leg | Old Trafford | Attendance: 74,909 | Scorers: Lukaku 84; Ben Yedder 73, 78

Manchester United’s Champions League hopes were killed off with a dramatic late double by Sevilla substitute Wissam Ben Yedder.

The tie was heading towards potential extra time when Sevilla coach Vincenzo Montella made the breakthrough with a change of personnel.

Within six minutes of appearing off the bench, Frenchman Ben Yedder had scored twice to stun Old Trafford and end hopes of progression to the quarter-finals for Jose Mourinho’s side. Not even a late goal from Romelu Lukaku could fire a recovery for the Reds in front of the heartbroken home faithful.

It had been four years since the nerve-shredding tension of Champions League football at Old Trafford and this was as stressful as ever. At this last-16 stage in 2014 United recovered from a dismal night in Athens after David Moyes’ side lost to Olympiakos. By virtue of a sensational Robin van Persie hat-trick, the Reds turned the tie around 3-2 on aggregate.

United were in a far more comfortable situation this time following the 0-0 stalemate in the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Seville last month. But as Champions League experts had warned it wasn’t always as good a result to bring back to England as you would imagine. The fact Sevilla could afford a score draw on the night in Manchester meant the electric atmosphere was under-pinned by a certain amount of stress.

The anxiety could have been relieved in the opening seconds as Romelu Lukaku made a bright and dangerous start. He used his power to hold off defender Simon Kjaer. The Belgian laid off to Jesse Lingard, went for the one-two but blast his shot into the East Stand.

Sevilla were quick to get over the scare and a header from Joaquin Correa and a shot from Franco Vazquez were warnings to United. Montella’s side were proving they wouldn’t shrink in the cauldron and Luis Muriel dragged a shot just wide in the 27th minute as they increased their shots stats.

Sevilla are fifth in La Liga and way off the title race dominated by Barcelona, but they’ve got quality and Old Trafford sensed something might be brewing if United didn’t respond. It came down to Marouane Fellaini to unsettle the visitors with a stinging left foot shot in the 38th minute that keeper Sergio Rico kept pawed away for a corner.

United’s hearts were in their mouths early in the second half when a dangerous attack was thwarted by a huge tackle from Eric Bailly as Correa went to pull the trigger in the penalty box. The Reds' response saw Lingard’s shot touched away from the danger area by keeper Rico as Old Trafford rose to try and inspire the side.

As every minute passed the anxiety levels stepped up another notch as a classic knockout match unfolded with both sides knowing they needed a goal. To that end manager Mourinho brought on Paul Pogba for Fellaini on the hour to give the Reds more thrust in the engine room. United were struggling to find the fluency or fervour of the Liverpool win and paid the price in the 73rd minute.

Sevilla substitute Wissam Ben Yedder had only been on for a minute when a United move broke down and the Spaniards slickly went forward to set up the striker. David De Gea had been the hero of the first leg but couldn’t keep out the low drive.

It left United with 18 minutes to find two goals. Juan Mata and Anthony Martial were immediately brought on but before they could get into the match Ben Yedder had done it again as his close-range header spun over the line despite De Gea's attempt to keep it out.

There was an inevitable spirited effort by United to stage a possible fairytale late climax when Lukaku blasted in from close range. But the task set by Ben Yedder proved too much for Mourinho's men and the quest for a quarter-final place was over.

THE LINE-UPS

TALKING POINTS

All or nothing in the FA Cup
United are surely comfortably home and dry for a return again to the Champions League next season in the Premier League top-four race after dismantling Liverpool. But if any silverware is to be added to Jose Mourinho’s United CV this season, then an FA Cup success is the only avenue left open. If the Reds can replicate the domestic form that despatched Liverpool last Saturday, and beat Brighton on Saturday, then a Wembley semi-final will go a long way to easing the pain of this Euro exit.

Lukaku looks the part in the Champions League
If any United player was unfortunate not to be stretching the Champions League experience to the next round then was Lukaku. It’s his first campaign at this level and was a powerhouse against the Spaniards and added to his goals tally for an impressive campaign.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR UNITED?

It is knockout football at Old Trafford again as United face Brighton in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday night (17 March) with kick-off at 19:45 GMT. A repeat of November's 1-0 league win over Chris Hughton's side would do nicely.

MOURINHO REACTS TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE EXIT

Jose Mourinho says his Manchester United team must move on quickly after being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Sevilla on Tuesday night.

After a goalless draw in Andalucia three weeks ago, the Reds suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat in the second leg at Old Trafford as the Spanish side progressed to the quarter-finals.

Read the key points from the boss in his post-match interviews with MUTV and BT Sport…

SECOND SEVILLA GOAL MADE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE
“I think the first goal will always be important in this match – not just because of the first leg result [a goalless draw] but also because of the profile of the match [a Champions League last-16 tie]. We tried since the first minute to be aggressive and to be intense and I could find some similarities between this game and the beginning against Liverpool last weekend. But then, we didn’t score and Sevilla progressively kept the ball, they were quite confident having the ball and hiding the ball from us and controlling the game well. In spite of that, we didn’t have problems in the first half. In the second half, we had good chances to score. We had good and dangerous approaches to their box. They scored a goal and from that moment everything became much more emotional and much more difficult and the second goal made it almost impossible.”

IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT
“It would always be a difficult match against a good team. The first goal was important for the mentality especially from the psychological point of view. The team started well but the goal was missing. The first half, we had everything under control. Sevilla were more than happy with 0-0 and that was exactly what they tried for. In the second half, we had chances and dangerous approaches but they scored before us. After that, we were on the edge and it was really difficult. You can concede with more time to play. I said yesterday to the press, I expected this from them, this type of approach. They let the game go until a very dangerous period for us, which they did, and they scored a goal. After that, everything was more difficult as, especially, we had less time.”

NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TEAM’S ATTITUDE
“We always want more quality and movement but the players were completely free for that and we had good situations. I saw one just in front of me in the best period of the first half with Antonio Valencia, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford which is exactly what we work for and this is exactly what we want. We had good situations, we had good periods. I don’t think we had control of the game because the opponent had that, but I cannot say that my players had something wrong in terms of their attitude and their intention to play.”

HAPPY WITH THE PLAYERS’ SADNESS
“Of course, everybody is sad and I told the players in the dressing room I’m happy with this sadness. Really happy with that. There is not time to be sad for a long time, though. We have a match on Saturday and hopefully the players will be back on the training ground and focused on that important game. I said for the two matches against Sevilla and Brighton, if you win you are in and, if you lose, you are out.”

WE MUST MOVE ON QUICKLY
“Yes [we have to look at winning the FA Cup and finishing in the top four]. But a fantastic team like Tottenham has exactly the same target as us to do that. Liverpool have the Champions League but don’t have the FA Cup and that’s football and that’s life. We lost and tomorrow is another day. We have no time for dramas. We have to work because on Saturday we have another important match.”

Graeme Souness slams Manchester United for lacking imagination in Sevilla defeat: 'They resorted to just lumping it to a big centre forward'

* Manchester United were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday
* Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder's two second-half goals sealed victory for Sevilla
* Graeme Souness was critical of Jose Mourinho's approach after full-time

Manchester United lacked imagination and failed to get out of second gear in their Champions League defeat by an 'average' Sevilla, according to Graeme Souness.

Jose Mourinho's side crashed out at the last 16 stage after a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Tuesday night following a second-half brace from Wissam Ben Yedder.

Romelu Lukaku's late consolation was not enough to inspire a late comeback as United were forced to exit the competition prematurely.

'They never played at a tempo which was enough to cause this average Seville team a problem', said Souness on Irish channel TV3.

'They never did until Seville scored basically. They couldn't get out of that second, third gear.

Graeme Souness slammed Manchester United's display in defeat by Sevilla on Tuesday night. Souness accused Manchester United of 'just lumping it to a big centre forward' throughout. Souness was also critical of Mourinho's use of Marouane Fellaini from the start at Old Trafford

'No imagination. (They) resorted to just lumping it to a big centre forward, looking for second bits off him.

'Fellaini's on the pitch - that tells you which way they want to go, thinking they'll get something at a set-piece.

'It's Manchester United we're talking about. It's Manchester United - the biggest club in the world arguably - playing football like that.

'It ain't good enough.'

Souness' words echoed a series of condemnations from former United players Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes on BT Sport.

Romelu Lukaku says Manchester United players went 'hiding' during Champions League exit to Sevilla

* Romelu Lukaku scored a consolation as Manchester United lost 2-1 on Tuesday
* He suggested that United did not deserve to progress to the quarter-finals
* Lukaku also admitted that the dressing room was a quiet place after the game

Romelu Lukaku has accused some of his Manchester United team-mates of 'hiding' during their 2-1 loss against Sevilla.

The Old Trafford club exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage courtesy of two goals from Wissam Ben Yedder. Lukaku scored a consolation late on but it was not enough to rescue his side.

And the Belgian striker believes that United simply did not 'deserve' to progress to the quarter-finals.

He told BT Sport: 'Some things were flawed with some players, some players were hiding. The deception was really big, because you know I think we started the game well, and then we started to let them have control in the game.

'Then we had a few half chances but we didn't really score, and then they scored the first goal.

'From that moment on we tried to chase the game and they scored the second one which was a big blow. At the end we kept pushing but it was not enough.

'We should have done better because the bit of quality we have in the team, we should have went through. We didn't deserve it because we weren't good enough.'

Romelu Lukaku suggested some of Manchester United's players went 'hiding' on Tuesday. And the Belgian striker insisted his side had not deserved to advance to the last-eight

Lukaku's goal in the 84th minute managed to lift the crowd at Old Trafford.

It was too little, too late though, and Lukaku himself thinks United needed to score before Sevilla to quell the visitors.

'We should have scored earlier, maybe in the first-half with the half chances we created,' he continued. 'The last pass today was not good enough.

'We always get in the right position but the ball to each other was not good enough, and that is what killed us today.'

Jose Mourinho and his players now turn their attentions to the FA Cup. They are into the quarter-finals in that competition.

Even so, the 24-year-old admitted his disappointment at their early exit in Europe and admitted the dressing room was quiet post-match: 'Not hiding, but I mean in the dressing room, because some people were disappointed with the result because we expected better from ourselves.

'We know we have a lot of quality in the team but today we didn't show it. So, it was difficult for us. We have to bounce back, we have one trophy to chase, and that's the FA Cup.

'But we wanted to go very far in the Champions League because that's what a club like Manchester United need to do, and we didn't do it today so we're very disappointed.'

Manchester United legends round on Jose Mourinho after shock Champions League exit to Sevilla at Old Trafford

* Manchester United were dumped out of Champions League after loss to Sevilla
* Rio Ferdinand said Jose Mourinho's side were 'terrible' at Old Trafford
* Paul Scholes fiercely criticised Mourinho's tactics against Spanish club

Manchester United greats rounded on Jose Mourinho after they were embarrassingly dumped out of the Champions League by unfancied Sevilla.

Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes slammed the manager and his players as a late Wissam Ben Yedder double sent Sevilla through on one of the worst nights in United's European history.

Ferdinand went as far as to say United's players looked like strangers, while Mourinho himself astonishingly proclaimed: 'That's football, it's not the end of the world.'

'Terrible,' Ferdinand fumed. 'They looked like a team thrown together full of strangers.

'They went out there and played nervously and cautiously, you’ve got to take the game by the scruff of the neck. They gave nothing for the fans to cheer about.

'Top teams don’t pick and choose when they play. They are consistently good.'

Rio Ferdinand described Manchester United as 'a team of strangers' after Sevilla defeat

Paul Scholes has fiercely criticised Jose Mourinho's tactics against Sevilla on Tuesday night

United only registered four shots on target over the two legs, which Mourinho dismissed as 'just statistics'. But Scholes claimed the two performances were indicative of the Portuguese's reign.

'That's the way the manager likes to play, on the counter attack,' Scholes said. 'It was difficult watching that and the first game. There is no desire, no energy, no speed. It's unexplainable. Teams go and try. United didn't try and win the game away from home.

'Surely the manager must see Sanchez's not been good enough. He doesn't know his best front three. He needs to choose his best and leave Sanchez out.'

Ferdinand added: 'The attitude seemed off. Lethargic. The onus was on them to attack but they started conservatively. This team looked like a team who didn't have it in them to win it.'

Mourinho launched an impassioned defence of his management, claiming to have 'no regrets' and refused to overreact, despite Sevilla lying outside the top four in La Liga and United having been overwhelming favourites to reach the quarter-finals.

'I don't want to make a drama out of it,' Mourinho said. 'We have no time for that. We have no time to be sad for more than 24 hours. That's football, it's not the end of the world.

'I've sat here twice, with Porto when United went out, with Real Madrid when United went out. It's not something new for the club. Being United manager and losing at home is not disappointing.

'I don't think the performance was bad. The intention and the way we started was positive. Everything together needs to change here. Everybody spends money - it's not just us.'
