Ferguson sets United goals target

SIR Alex Ferguson has ordered United to re-establish themselves as the Premier League's sharpest shooters.
And the United boss, named as manager of the month for September, has backed Wayne Rooney to help the champions blast their way past Liverpool in the scoring charts.
Fergie watched as Rafael Benitez's side became the league's leading scorers last season with 77 goals - nine more than United. And the Anfield club have continued that hot streak this term with 22 goals already, compared to United's 17.
But ahead of their clash with Sunderland today, Fergie is convinced United are ready to turn the tables on Liverpool.
"We said at the start of the season that our goals record in the league last year was a complete change from previous years," he said.
"One year we got to 90-plus goals and almost every year was an improvement in the goal scoring department. Last year was completely different to our normal years. We want to get back up to that decent level again. We've made a good start 17 goals in the Premier Division so far, which is far more acceptable."
United have been the leading scorers in 10 of the 17 seasons since the Premier League began in 1992.
Their best haul was in 2000 when they struck 97 times on the way to the title. On five occasions they've scored 80 goals or more, which is why Fergie was so alarmed with their total of 68 last season.
And while Ferguson expects hitman Roo to lead his side's charge, he is happy to see the goals spread about.
"If we got two or three players over 20 goals we would be happy with that," he said.
"If Wayne could get us 25-plus we would be delighted. He's had a good start, the signs are good and we hope he continues."
