Romelu Lukaku was long touted to achieve superstardom, ever since breaking into Anderlecht's first team 11 days past his 16th birthday.

A son of former Zaire international Roger Lukaku, Romelu was born into football and has matured into a bona fide goal machine, guaranteeing a lethal combination of strikes with head and both feet in the Premier League.

The fact he showcased his potential at such a young age means many observers are surprised to learn he is still only 24. As long ago as 2010, he hit a brace for Belgium in an international against Russia and announced his ability to deliver on the world stage.

Even in those early days, as good a judge as ex-Reds marksman Ruud van Nistelrooy declared: "He is one of the greatest talents in Europe - perhaps even in the whole world." An explosive force in attack, he had a record of 41 goals in 98 outings at Anderlecht when he left the Belgian club to join Chelsea in August 2011.

Following a successful season-long loan from Chelsea to West Bromwich Albion in 2012/13, which culminated with a hat-trick against United in Sir Alex Ferguson's final game in charge, he attempted to earn a regular place at Stamford Bridge.

He played two league games for Chelsea at the start of 2013/14 and came on as substitute in the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Bayern Munich but then, on the last day of the summer transfer window, he was loaned to Everton for the remainder of the campaign.

The move proved to be perfect for the Belgian, whose 15 goals in 31 Premier League games helped the Toffees to finish in fifth place. What followed was a statement of intent from the Merseysiders as they broke their club transfer record to make him a permanent signing in July 2014.

The goals kept coming as Lukaku matured and became almost unplayable at times due to his powerful physique and impressive acceleration. In each of his three campaigns as a permanent Everton player, he netted 20-plus goals in all competitions; he netted 25 in the Premier League alone last season, in 37 matches, making it his most productive term so far in the English top flight.

Capable of racking up incredible scoring streaks, he matched the legendary Dixie Dean's record of finding the net in nine consecutive matches at Goodison Park. He even edged Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the PFA Team of the Year in 2016/17, to earn a spot alongside Tottenham's Harry Kane, and only missed out on the Golden Boot due to the Spurs star's own purple patch as the campaign drew to a close.

Lukaku's ability to spearhead the Toffees to devastating effect earned him admirers from far and wide. There was intense speculation about his future and many in the press predicted a chance to show his true worth to former club Chelsea would transpire. Instead it was United who sealed a deal to reunite the striker with Jose Mourinho.

Always ambitious, Romelu has often been clear in his intent to win silverware and medals as a footballer. That burning desire has ultimately led him to a club that lifted three trophies in 2016/17, a club that will task him with leading the attack and demonstrating his quality both domestically and, for the first time in his career, in the Champions League group stages.

Manchester United set to beat Chelsea with world-record £100million move for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku

* Manchester United hope to gazump Chelsea by signing Romelu Lukaku
* Lukaku was tipped to join Chelsea but clubs have failed to reach an agreement
* Everton could see Lukaku leave with Wayne Rooney heading in other direction
* Jose Mourinho is keen to sign Belgian who scored 26 goals for the Blues last term

Manchester United are ready to hijack Romelu Lukaku's £100million move to Chelsea.

In a sensational development, Sportsmail understands Jose Mourinho is closing in on the biggest move of the summer and a world-record deal, eclipsing Paul Pogba's £89m return to Old Trafford last year.

Everton striker Lukaku, who scored 26 goals last season, was expected to go back to Stamford Bridge but relations between the two clubs have soured since Chelsea's failed move to sign John Stones in 2015.

Mourinho was the Chelsea manager who sold Lukaku to Goodison Park three years ago but is keen to work again with the Belgian striker.

As Lukaku heads towards Old Trafford, Everton are hopeful of thrashing out a deal to bring Wayne Rooney back to Goodison from United but the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement.

Manchester United have stepped up their bid to wrestle Romelu Lukaku from rivals Chelsea. Lukaku is seeking Champions League football and could be heading for Old Trafford. The 24-year-old could be tempted to United with Wayne Rooney heading the other way

Rooney has moved closer to a return to Merseyside 13 years after leaving for Old Trafford in a £27m transfer after Everton stepped up their interest.

There is a willingness on behalf of Everton, United and the Rooney camp to strike a deal, but it is understood that all three sides will have to compromise.

A number of options are being discussed, including United paying up the remaining two years of Rooney's contract and allowing him to leave on a free transfer, and a season-long loan which would see the two clubs share his £230,000-a-week wages.

Rooney's agent Paul Stretford met Bill Kenwright at the Everton chairman's London offices on Wednesday and further talks are planned in the coming days.

Everton have always been Rooney's preference ahead of a move to China or America, and he confirmed after United's win in the Europa League final in May that they were the only club he would play for after leaving Old Trafford.

But until now the finances have proved a significant stumbling block with Everton only prepared to pay a fee of £10m and wages of £150,000 a week for a 31-year-old player whose stock has fallen significantly in the last 12 months.

They had a loan bid rejected in January but talks have been revived this week after Rooney decided to stay in England following a family holiday in Mykonos mulling over his future.

Everton's major shareholder Farhad Moshiri and Kenwright see the commercial value in bringing Rooney back to his spiritual home. They also hope he can resurrect his flagging career.

Rooney was again seen at a spin class in Liverpool on Wednesday as he tries to build up his fitness before United's players are due to report for pre-season on Saturday. It remains to be seen if he will fly to California on tour with the rest of Mourinho's squad 24 hours later.

Re-signing Rooney would be another statement of intent by Everton in a summer that has seen then spend £90m on goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, defender Michael Keane, midfielder Davy Klaassen, and forward Sandro Ramirez.

Their also want Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson and have an interest in Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

Meanwhile, United are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl. They are determined to add a holding midfielder to their squad, with Tottenham's Eric Dier and Chelsea's Nemanja Matic still the preferred options.

daripada dimarahin Mou karena blom dapat striker antara Morata ato Lukaku, jadinya panic buying takut dikejar deadline tour pra musim. kabarnya Rooney akan dimasukkan ke dalam klausula pembelian Lukaku.
