Ivan Perisic

Ivan Perisic is wanted by Manchester United and Chelsea - here's all you need to know about the Croatian winger who could cost £48m

* Manchester United and Chelsea are pursuing Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic
* The Italian club want £48million for their star, but may have to sell
* Perisic starred at Euro 2016, and has previously played under Jurgen Klopp
* Sportsmail tells you all you need to know about the winger

With the English domestic season over, the Premier League's big boys have already turned their attention to the summer transfer window.

Manchester City's moves are already underway, while Chelsea and Manchester United look set to do battle for Ivan Perisic, Inter Milan's Croatian winger.

The club's sporting director Piero Ausilio seemed resigned to the winger leaving Inter this summer, with the Premier League his likely destination.

So what is it about Perisic that makes him so appealing? Sportsmail tells you all you need to know...

Manchester United and Chelsea are set to go head to head over Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic

Perisic? He's been around for ages hasn't he?

It certainly feels that way. He was first linked with a move to England as long ago as 2011, when Tottenham expressed an interest, but he decided instead to go to Borussia Dortmund - where he notably scored a stunner against Arsenal in the Champions League.

By that time he was already a Croatia international, and he started the first two games of Euro 2012 alongside Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic in midfield, before scoring a stunner for his country in the World Cup two years later.

So by the time he came to Euro 2016, by now an Inter player after a two-year spell with Wolfsburg, he was already a fairly high-profile player.

Ah, Euro 2016, that's where I remember him from!

And well you might. Perisic was absolutely brilliant at the tournament, probably the stand-out player of the group stages.

He scored two goals, including a blistering strike past potential new team-mate David de Gea, and provided an assist - in a Croatia team brimming with talent, he was directly involved in three of their five goals.

With his incredible energy on the wing, and his eye for goal, he emerged from that tournament looking every bit a Premier League-standard player.

And, perhaps for the first time in his career, Perisic has managed to string together a run of form for a significant length of time.

He had a good run at the end of last season, and has continued it this year, with 12 goals for club and country - albeit with two red cards thrown in.

OK, so remind me, what kind of player is he?

Going forward, Perisic's tried-and-tested technique when attacking defenders one-on-one has been a tendency to feint towards cutting in to the right before flashing through on the left of his marker and unleashing a cross of shot.

It is a tactic similar to that so-often used by Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben, entirely predictable but so difficult to stop at speed.

He covers a huge amount of ground on the flank but seems almost tireless, and is just the kind of player Mourinho likes.

A skillful winger, Perisic is direct and quick, but also prepared to work hard defensively

So will he suit United or Chelsea better?

It would be a surprise to see him play under Antonio Conte, because while he is happy to track back, Perisic really isn't a natural wing-back, nor could you see him replacing Eden Hazard or Pedro as one of the inside forwards - that said, Conte has converted less convincing players in the past, so who knows.

But Jose Mourinho would surely love his direct running and defensive tenacity, not to mention his power and athleticism.

Is he right for a really big club?

It's the only question-mark hanging over Perisic - he struggled at Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp, and while he has been good at Inter, that has been while the club has been poor.

At 28, he has never quite made it happen on the biggest stage - his Champions League experience amounts to 11 games back in his Dortmund days, and no team from Europe's elite has wanted him in the competition since 2013.

So, however good he may be, there is certainly a risk about his ability to step up to the very highest level - not least if he is part of a squad rotation system, because as he showed at Dortmund, he really doesn't like to sit on the bench.

What happened at Dortmund?

Klopp ended up telling Perisic he should 'keep his mouth shut', slamming the player as 'childish' after he complained about the now-Liverpool boss' apparent favouritism for Marco Reus and others.

Perisic had found himself in and out of the side and spoke out on television in his homeland, saying: 'I cannot be pleased with my situation at the club. I don't get a lot of time on the pitch, very much like last year.

'The stats show it: When I play I score. But when I don't score in a game, I am not an option for the next two or three games.'

Speaking specifically about Klopp he added: 'We have no relationship. He is the best coach in Germany right now, the number one, everyone accepts the subordinate role.'

His comments were not well-taken by Klopp, who responded: 'Public whining belongs to kindergarten, not to the world of adults.

'If he doesn't play, a football professional should shut his mouth, work hard and make the coach select him – not complain about it to the reporters.'
He was sold on as the manager lost patience.

So would he be a risk?

If Inter get the £48million that they are asking for, it would be a huge fee for a player of his age and with his CV.

That said, he has all the attributes to be a true star in the Premier League, and there is not a single right back in the division who would be happy to see him arrive!

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants £44m Inter star Ivan Perisic in time for July's pre-season tour of United States

* Manchester United are keen on signing Inter Milan's star winger Ivan Perisic
* Jose Mourinho wants Perisic in his squad in time for the United States trip
* Inter and United are in contact over a transfer for the Croatia international
* United made Benfica's Victor Lindelof their first summer signing for £31m

Manchester United are to sign £44million Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic within weeks.

Jose Mourinho sees the Inter Milan winger, 28, as a key part of a summer strengthening programme in which the Premier League club want to add at least four players to the ranks.

No fee has been agreed – but initial contact has been made between the clubs – and Sportsmail understands the Portuguese wants Perisic in his squad in time for their pre-season trip to America next month.

Jose Mourinho sees Inter's Ivan Perisic as a key part of his recruitment push at Old Trafford. The Premier League giants are to sign £44million Inter Milan winger Perisic within weeks

A source close to the potential move say it could happen sooner rather than later. 'There's a keenness to get it done. We're looking at it going through within weeks.'

Mourinho has already swooped for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in a £30.7m move that was completed on Wednesday.

He also wants to add Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, in a bid to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but there is a fear at Old Trafford that any move for the forward could prompt the Spaniards to demand negotiation over goalkeeper David de Gea, a player they do not wish to lose.

The form of current goalkeeper Keylor Navas has prompted reports that Madrid have ended their pursuit of De Gea, who came close to joining the La Liga club in 2015 only for a last-minute administrational glitch to scupper the move.

However, United remain wary of a change of heart at the Bernabeu. Madrid are thought to want in excess of £75m for the striker, who United value at closer to £60m.

Croatia international Perisic is keen on a move to Manchester. He is well-travelled across Europe having played in Belgium, France and Germany as well as Italy.

During his time at Borussia Dortmund he clashed with then boss and current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp who, after the player complained about a lack of first-team action, said his behaviour 'belongs to the kindergarten'.

Inter, who are facing pressure to meet Financial Fair Play rules, are looking for a fee of around £44m for a player who cost them £14.5m when he signed from Wolfsburg in 2015.

United's valuation falls well short of that, although there is an air of confidence that a deal suitable to all parties can be struck.

Mourinho also wants a central midfielder, although Monaco star Fabinho, who can also play at right back, is not currently a target.

Speaking following the capture of Sweden international Lindelof, the manager hinted that the club need to press on in the transfer market.

'Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer,' Mourinho said.

Luciano Spalletti hopes to convince Ivan Perisic to remain at Inter Milan despite Manchester United interest

* Ivan Perisic has been linked with United after scoring 11 goals last season
* The Croatian international recently liked an Instagram post by Paul Pogba
* Pogba was welcoming imminent new signing Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford
* Inter Milan boss Luciano Spalletti wants to convince Perisic to stay in Italy

Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti has revealed he intends to speak with Ivan Perisic amid speculation the winger wants to leave the club for Manchester United.

Croatia international Perisic has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after liking Paul Pogba's recent Instagram post welcoming Romelu Lukaku to the Red Devils.

Reports in Italy have suggested United are considering a £45million offer for Perisic, who scored 11 goals in 42 appearances for the Nerazzurri last season.

However, Spalletti is desperate to hold on to the 28-year-old and expects the winger to remain part of his squad for the start of the new campaign.

'I will speak to everyone and, of course, for those who are 'distracted' there will be different words,' Spalletti said on Sunday.

'I will listen to him. I'm counting on him but we'll have to understand his intentions. It would not be nice for me to hear him say words like 'I want to leave'. We'll see.

'You keep talking about Perisic and his desire to leave but I need to listen to his own words first and then decide how to act.

'In any case, I will say this: we are Inter and we can choose to make different decisions to the ideas of the players.

'I hope to have him in the side, I am counting on it and I am positive in that sense.'

United boss Jose Mourinho has moved quickly to reinforce his squad ahead of the new season, with Victor Lindelof arriving from Benfica and Lukaku set to complete his transfer from Everton after undergoing a medical in Los Angeles.

Re: Ivan Perisic

Manchester United turn attention to signing Ivan Perisic as Jose Mourinho wants £45m deal for the Inter Milan winger done by the weekend

* Manchester United will increase their offer for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic
* Perisic identified some time ago but Romelu Lukaku pursuit took precedence
* Now Lukaku is signed, Jose Mourinho wants a deal for Perisic sewn up soon

Manchester United will increase their offer for Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic after wrapping up Romelu Lukaku’s move to Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new wide player as he prepares to offload another one with Adnan Januzaj set to join Real Sociedad for £9.8million on Wednesday.

It will complete a dramatic fall from the grace for the young Belgian who was was United's brightest young prospect when he signed a five-year deal in 2013 but has spent much of the last two seasons out on loan at Sunderland and Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester United will increase their offer for £48m-rated Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic

erisic is training at Inter’s pre-season camp in Riscone di Brunico and United want to complete a deal before the Italian club leave for China next week.

Inter value Perisic at £48million and are unhappy with United’s opening offers of £36m and £39m. An improved bid closer to £45m for the 28-year-old Croatia international is expected as United look to make their third major signing of the summer.

Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward has stayed in England to continue negotiations while Mourinho and his squad have travelled to the US, and he is not expected to join the tour until next week.

Despite signing Everton striker Lukaku in a deal that could be worth up to £90m and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof for £31m, Mourinho is said to want up to three more players before the start of the season.

Perisic was identified as a target some time ago but United’s pursuit of Lukaku has taken precedence until now. The Belgium striker was confirmed as a United player on Monday.

Perisic, who joined Inter for £14.6m from Wolfsburg two years ago, can play on the wing or as a second striker. He is understood to be keen on a move to Old Trafford and has posted a series of cryptic comments on social media, but new Inter boss Luciano Spalletti insists the player has not told the club he wants to go.

Although Spalletti admitted at the weekend that Perisic has been ‘distracted’ by United’s interest, he would like to keep the Croatian and Inter are standing strong over their £48m valuation.

It was thought they may have to sell Perisic to raise £26m and avoid a Financial Fair Play punishment from FIFA, but the Italians met the June 30 deadline without the need to sacrifice a player who scored 11 goals for them last season.

Inter fly to China on Tuesday and would like Perisic’s future resolved before then. United are also keen to accelerate their transfer business. Lukaku’s signing has only partially placated Mourinho, who has grown increasingly frustrated this summer.

The United boss likes to bring in signings early so they can settle in, and has prioritised a holding midfielder in addition to Perisic.

Tiemoue Bakayoko, Eric Dier and Nemanja Matic have all been linked with a move, although Chelsea would be reluctant to do business with United over Matic after losing out on Lukaku.

The Serbia midfielder was yesterday reported to be a target for Inter. It is understood that Dier, a boyhood United fan, would be open to a move but persuading Spurs to sell is another matter.

At least Mourinho is happy with United’s pre-season base at the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, a location he used as manager of Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid. His players are being put through double training sessions ahead of the opening tour game against LA Galaxy in the early hours of Sunday.
