A Netherlands Under-16 international, the youngster will be expected to progress within the Reds' Academy and will look to force his way into Paul McGuinness' Under-18 squad.

United agree Fosu-Mensah deal


Manchester United agreed a deal to sign Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Ajax ahead of the transfer deadline.

The 16-year-old is a powerful defender who caught the eye at the AEGON Future Cup and is highly regarded in his homeland.

Fosu-Mensah still requires an International Transfer Certificate to be processed in order to make his debut for Paul McGuinness' Academy squad, but his versatility and ability mark him out as an excellent addition for the Reds.

Paul McGuinness is looking forward to Timothy Fosu-Mensah making his debut for Manchester United's Academy.

The Dutch teenager was signed from Ajax before the September transfer deadline and is awaiting international clearance in order to pull on a red shirt for the first time. He is currently away with the Netherlands Under-17 squad for the European qualifiers against Finland, Malta and Serbia.

"A lot of clubs have got foreign imports from all over the place [in their academies] and while we would like to get one or two more imports ourselves, we have started with the signing of Timothy from Ajax," McGuinness told ManUtd.com.

"We would like more recruits but, while we haven't got them, the advantage is we do have a very tight-knit group who have been here a long time, some since the age of seven or eight. The team spirit is fantastic.

"Timothy is still waiting for international clearance but he looks a really mature and talented player. He covers the ground well and I think he can make a big impact at our level. He can play in a number of positions - centre-back, midfield or full-back, so I think he's another good, adaptable and highly-talented player."

Justru Timothy Fuso-Mensah itu yang punya adik di Ajax academy yang posisi aslinya CB. Bahas sedikit bersumber dari berbagai forum diEropa sana: Tim sendiri kaya Blackett dari wing-back dijadikan CB. Bedanya Tim kuat kaki kiri- kanan gak kaya Blackett yang cuma andalkan kaki kiri serta Tim lebih sering overlap. Soal tinggi badan, dia lebih tinggi dari anak usia 15-17 tahun pada umumnya di Eropa. Perawakan kaya Pogba juga, tinggi langsing. Ini ada cuplikan videonya:

Fosu-Mensah was initially a centre-back, representing Ajax, when he caught United's attention during the AEGON Future Cup and completed a move during the summer transfer window of 2014 before being forced to wait for international clearance.



After making his Under-18 debut in a 2-0 defeat at Everton in November, he went on to make 18 starts in his first season at the club and managed to get on the bench for the Under-21s. The Netherlands Under-17 captain took some time to settle in to the culture of the club but certainly emerged as an influential performer, producing high-class displays in some of the biggest fixtures.


"Tim made an impact," declared former coach Paul McGuinness. "He's a lad who was very good in the FA Youth Cup games. He played in midfield and at the back and, as a new addition, settling into the club takes time. Obviously, he's shown some really good qualities. He has very good acceleration over the ground to win the ball and then break forward. He has shown some outstanding work."


Although nominally a central defender, he was often pushed into midfield to help sharpen other areas of his game and looked comfortable as part of a three-man defence during the end-of-term play-offs. There are high hopes for Fosu-Mensah and he was pushed into the Under-21 squad last summer, with Warren Joyce's group lacking defenders at the moment, despite being eligible for another year at Academy level.


Indeed, he spent the pre-season campaign with the older age group and scored a fine goal in a 1-1 draw at Stockport County after being pushed into an attacking midfield role for the second half.


Back in August 2015, Joyce told ManUtd.com: "He [Fosu-Mensah] is a footballer. If you’re looking for footballers, you’ve got to look at what their real strengths are. He played at the back for us and, in the first game against Salford, he was arguably at fault with their three goals. He could stay there as he’s played there and in holding midfield for his country, the Netherlands, but you have to look at his strengths and what else he can offer the team. We’ve got to hone his strengths as well so he ultimately he can be selected for the first team."


Certainly, the teenager's versatility knew no bounds as he operated in a no.10 role but was then switched to other positions and continued to showcase his attributes. Shuffled around defensive and midfield positions with ease, it was arguably at full-back where he produced his most outstanding performances, a couple of which screamed first-team quality. One display at right-back, in a 6-1 thumping of Leicester City, was surely his best individual contribution.


A maiden goal, assisted by Memphis Depay, in the 7-0 demolition of Norwich City's Under-21s at Old Trafford, came from the opposite flank in front of Louis van Gaal and it is obvious he can offer cover in a variety of roles as he continues to develop his enormous potential.

Louis van Gaal's reign at Manchester United can be criticised on many fronts, but giving youth a chance certainly isn't one of them.

Marcus Rashford's incredible foray into the first team set up will have inspired many across the country and none more so than his newest team-mate, Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

The Dutch youngster, so unknown he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page, became the 31st player to be used by Van Gaal this season in the 3-2 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Replacing Marcos Rojo in the 55th minute, the defensive midfielder impressed, So who is the new boy and could he be the next academy graduate to make a name for himself at Old Trafford?

He began his career as a centre-back in the Ajax academy, quickly attracting attention from a number of top European clubs.

The Red Devils didn't hang around, quickly snapping up their man in 2014.

Now 18, the defender has since progressed into an imposing central midfielder, becoming one of the most promising players in United's junior set-up.

His versatility will be of most interest to the club's higher ups, having demonstrated he can play central defence, full back, midfield and even been deployed as a no.10.

Fosu-Mensah's physical strength and intelligence on the ball was evident against Arsenal and is something that has seen him thrive under the tutelage of Warren Joyce in the Under-21s.

Describing the Dutchman, the U21s boss said: 'He is a footballer... We've got to hone his strengths as well so he ultimately he can be selected for the first team.'
