Manchester United stars 'urged club's board to keep faith with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer' before Tottenham victory as senior players back under-fire boss

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under pressure going into 2-1 win over Tottenham
* Solskjaer had come under fire following draws with Sheffield United and Villa
* Manchester United's senior players are fully behind the Norwegian coach

Manchester United's senior stars told the club's board that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to bring success back to Old Trafford before their win over Tottenham.

Solskjaer's position as Manchester United manager was starting to be questioned following a poor run of results ahead of their home clash with Jose Mourinho's Spurs.

However, The Times suggest established members of their squad have pleaded with United's decision makers to give Solskjaer time in order for him to rebuild the club.

Manchester United's first team players are fully behind their manager despite their poor form

Solskjaer was originally given the reins on a temporary basis in December before landing the job full-time after impressing in the hotseat.

Manchester United's form tailed off towards the end of last season and remain way off the pace in the Premier League during the current campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri have been linked with the club during recent weeks but United's players would be against a mid-season managerial change.

The club's board are also keen to give Solskjaer time as the club legend looks to clean up the mess made by David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

United impressed on Wednesday night as they defeated Tottenham on Mourinho's first visit to Old Trafford as a rival manager since his sacking in December 2018.

Marcus Rashford netted a brace to give United the three points and ease the pressure off of Solskjaer and his coaching staff.

United take on Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.

Key duo Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are both major doubts for this weekend's action.
