Manchester United defender Gary Neville caught up in Anfield cop row after Liverpool defeat

Manchester United defender Gary Neville was involved in a heated touchline row with a senior police officer and a Liverpool steward in the aftermath of their 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday, it has emerged.

The argument was sparked after Neville, an unused substitute, was told to warm down elsewhere amid safety concerns in the stadium as he and team-mate Jonny Evans went through their post-match fitness routine in front of their own fans.

As the conversation between the United club captain and Reds steward continued, a police officer finally intervened to forcibly instruct Neville to follow order and move away from the temporarily detained away section, according to a report in The Sun.

Angry Neville, 34, eventually departed before the situation could escalate further but it is the latest incident in a long line of controversies involving the England full-back.

The veteran defender is regarded as a hero among United followers for his anti-Anfield outbursts, notably in January 2006 for his over-zealous celebration in front of the Reds faithful after a last-minute winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford, which earned him a £5,000 fine from the FA and a warning over his future conduct.

And on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant Mike Phelan had to tell Neville to return to his seat in the dug-out to avoid landing the player in further trouble after he launched a series of complaints towards match officials.

Neville was issued another waning from The FA in relation to inciteful behaviour after celebrating United's injury-time win in front of City fans during the Manchester derby.
