Manchester United confirm Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw will miss Southampton clash through injury

Manchester United have confirmed they will be without injured duo Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw for their upcoming trip to Southampton.

Both players picked up knocks during the Red Devil's recent home defeat by Crystal Palace, and are set for a spell on the sidelines.

Defender Shaw is struggling with a hamstring issue, while striker Martial has a thigh injury, leaving United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a selection headache.

Anthony Martial will be unavailable for Manchester United's upcoming trip to Southampton

Luke Shaw was replaced by Ashley Young in the first half of United's defeat to Crystal Palace

Martial has made a flying start to the new season, scoring twice in three Premier League games, having started this season as the club's first choice centre forward.

But his absence could mean a first start for youngster Mason Greenwood, who has made three substitute appearances so far this season.

The 17-year-old impressed during United's pre-season tour and scored several goals on the back of a fine campaign for the club's reserve side.

Solskjaer recently claimed Greenwood is a better natural finisher than Martial and Marcus Rashford, despite being several years younger than the pair.

Ashley Young replaced the injured Shaw after 34 minutes of the defeat to Palace and is likely to deputise in his absence.

Defeat by Palace last weekend sees United sat in fifth place in the Premier League table with four points from a possible nine after the opening three games.
