Default Re: Rio Gavin Ferdinand

'This isn't the time to criticise him, I could get a 34-year-old that would make the same mistake': Rio Ferdinand defends Aaron Wan-Bissaka but admits Manchester United were hard to watch in defeat to Bournemouth

* Rio Ferdinand has defended Manchester United's Aaron Wan Bissaka
* The right-back was at fault for Josh King's goal right on half-time
* The Norwegian's strike ended United's run of four games without defeat
* The former defender however did admit that United's display was a hard watch

Rio Ferdinand has come to the defence of Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka after their 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth.

The United full-back was at fault as Josh King rolled him before firing past David de Gea to fire in the only goal of the game.

However, Ferdinand insisted that now was not the time to criticise the former Crystal Palace defender and also praised his recovery skills and pace.

'We could sit here and dissect Aaron Wan Bissaka's game and there is some great stuff about his game,' Ferdinand said.

'The recovery tackles he is making, he is making more tackles than anyone in the league, and when he is in a foot race I would back him against anybody.

'But there are elements of his game he has to learn such as patience, timing and positioning at times, but that will come and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bought him knowing all that.

'This isn't the time to sit here and criticise him. That is just one instance in the game that he got it wrong. I could sit here and get a 34-year-old that would make the same mistake.'

Rio Ferdinand has defended Aaron Wan Bissaka after Manchester United's defeat. Wan-Bissaka was easily rolled by Bournemouth's Josh King who scored on half-time

However, Ferdinand did admit that it was a tough watch for him as United failed to follow up their win at Norwich with another Premier League victory.

The defeat was United's fourth league defeat already this season and followed up their losses to West Ham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.

'Today they were [a hard watch]. They haven't been in the last three or four games. It was a difficult place to come but you have to come to these places and perform.

'They have done well away from home recently and they were looking to take that confidence into this game but it just never materialised.

'They never got going, there was no constant flow to the way they were playing and the front three looked quite isolated.'

Ferdinand said there are many admirable qualities that he possesses despite the mistake. The former United defender however did admit that the defeat was a tough watch for him

However, while the defeat ended a run of four games without losing, Ferdinand maintained that his former teammate would not be too disheartened given the inexperience of the current squad.

'Solskjaer understands and expects that there is going to be inconsistency when you have a young team in terms of games played and experience.

'That is something that will improve, and it is about getting the fundamentals right, and that DNA throughout this club is going in the way Ole wants to see it, and that is a process.

'There was not much quality when they did turn the screw late on but they did try to unlock the door.

'This shows that Man Utd are more accustomed to be a counter-attacking team at the moment, because teams that press them are able to hit them on the break.'

King's goal consigned United to their fourth Premier League loss of the season already. Ferdinand also stated that the United front three looked isolated after recent good displays. Ferdinand however urged United to play on the counter attack from now on. Ferdinand however urged Solskjaer and United to implement a counter-attacking style of play

Joe Cole however was more critical of the United squad and does not believe they are able to match the rigours of the current fixutre congestion.

'There was a lack of movement. There has been a lot of good rotation recently, but today it was straight lines.

'They looked a bit fatigued. I don't think this team is capable of playing three or four games in 10 days, I don't think they have the quality in depth, particularly for the youngsters, they will find it difficult.

'As the years go by they will find it easier but today it caught up with them.'
