Manchester United 'willing to make Harry Maguire the world's most expensive defender' as they prepare to meet Leicester's £80m asking price

* Manchester United have had two bids rejected by Leicester for Harry Maguire
* The Foxes have been holding out for more than the fee paid for Virgil van Dijk
* United are reportedly ready to meet Leicester's valuation and pay £80million
* Maguire is keen to move to Old Trafford and play under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United are ready to give in to Leicester and make Harry Maguire the world's most expensive defender at £80million, according to Sky Sports News.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been chasing the England star throughout the summer, with United seeing two bids - the second of which was almost £70m - rejected.

Leicester have been holding out for a fee in excess of the £75m Liverpool paid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January of last year.

Manchester United are reportedly ready to meet Leicester's asking price for Harry Maguire. A deal worth £80million would make Maguire the most expensive defender in the world. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to add Maguire to his defence before the window closes

And according to the new report, the Foxes appear to have got their way with Ed Woodward now ready to sanction a record-breaking deal for Maguire.

The 26-year-old, who called in sick for training on Monday, has informed club officials and boss Brendan Rodgers of his desire to move to Old Trafford.

Personal terms will not be an issue for the former Hull centre back, who has four years remaining on his £80,000-a-week contract at the King Power Stadium.

Solskjaer made Maguire his No 1 defensive target months ago, but the need to sign him has increased after Eric Bailly picked up a serious knee injury which is expected to rule him out for five months.

United have only made two signings this summer, bringing in Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £50m and Daniel James from Swansea for £17m.

They are also closing in on a deal worth over £9m for Monaco wonderkid Hannibal Mejbri, although he is unlikely to be part of the first-team squad next season.

If Maguire does complete his move to United, Solskjaer could allow Axel Tuanzebe to join Newcastle on loan for the season to aid his development.
