Doncaster Rovers: We’re in safe hands with Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone
Rovers are in safe hands with rookie keeper Sam Johnstone, says Paul Dickov.
Dickov again put his contacts in Manchester to good use on deadline day, snapping up the England Under 20 captain as a stand-in for the injured Ross Turnbull.
And the Scot says he has every faith in the Manchester United youngster - who made his debut in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough - to be a more than capable replacement.
“Sam’s a goalkeeper we know a lot about. We’ve had him earmarked for a while in case anything happened to Ross,” said Dickov.
“United have been fantastic with us, allowing us to bring Sam in.
“He’s going to be a top keeper and he’s someone United rate really highly.
“He’s England Under 20 captain and he’s just signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at United.
“United don’t hand out deals like that to kids if they don’t think they’re top class.”
Turnbull, meanwhile, is expected to be ruled out for a month with a calf problem.
Dickov said: “Ross has been playing through the pain barrier for us for the last three or four weeks.
“He had a calf strain and, through compensating for that, both of his calves have become really tight.
“Through the advice of the specialist he needs three to four weeks rest.
“We’re going to give him that rest because we don’t want to lose him for the rest of the season."
