Gareth Bale Fails To Join Club-mate Cristiano Ronaldo In Team Of EURO 2016
11 July 2016 03:23

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of four players
from Euro 2016 champions Portugal's
squad to have been included in UEFA's
team of the tournament, but Real Madrid
colleague Gareth Bale has missed out.

A 13-man team of technical observers,
which included ex-Manchester United
managers Sir Alex Ferguson and David
Moyes and current England Under-21
boss Gareth Southgate, has selected a
team following the conclusion of the
tournament in France, which was won
for the first time by Portugal on Sunday
evening.

Golden boot winner Antoine Griezmann,
who was also crowned the player of the
tournament, was in the team, as was
West Ham and France winger Dimitri
Payet, but there was no space for
forward Bale alongside compatriots Joe
Allen and Aaron Ramsey in the 4-2-3-1
system.

The XI was made up solely of players
from the four semi-finalists, with
Germany's Joshua Kimmich, Jerome
Boateng and Toni Kroos joining
Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio and
defenders Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro
as the others in the team.

Bale is perhaps the most surprising
omission from the line-up, having
scored in each of the three group
games en route to Wales' run to the
last four in their first major tournament
since the 1958 World Cup.

"After quite a bit of deliberation, the
observers chose a team that features
the best performing players from the
best performing teams at UEFA Euro
2016," said Ferguson.

"We have chosen dominant central
defenders; full-backs who can defend
and attack; deep lying midfielders who
can control the game and dynamic,
flexible and creative attackers, all of
whom have the ability to create and
score goals.
"We believe that the selected XI
represents the best of the competition."
