FBI investigated Malcolm Glazer threats made by fans angered at Manchester United takeover

Under threat: The FBI report suggest the late Malcolm Glazer was the subject of threats

The FBI investigated threats against Manchester United's late owner Malcolm Glazer and his family by fans angered at his takeover of the Old Trafford club.

Before his death in May this year the American received a series of threatening calls and emails, whose buying of the Red Devils nine years ago was angrily opposed by supporters.

According to a 120 page report released by the FBI one of the threats was made to Glazer’s office at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the American football club he also owned.

A man, who said he was a member of a supporters' group, warned the businessman’s family would be in danger unless he failed to stop his bid of Manchester United.

In a second call, the same man, said he knew people who "were ready to take action against Glazer”.

He added: "I am giving you another warning" and set a deadline for which the takeover was to be abandoned.

Agents believed all the calls came from the UK with another threat being made by a man with a British accent saying saying he wished Mr Glazer, who made his billions in property, was "dead".

The documents, released under a Freedom of Information request ion, showed the threat was made on May 12, 2005, the same day he became the majority shareholder at Old Trafford.

The man called the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where the Buccaneers are based.

Before launching a £790m takeover largely funded by loans secured against the club's assets, Glazer had gradually bought out United shareholders between 2003 and 2005.

Although he never stepped foot inside Old Trafford, he received direct threats from furious fans who opposed his ownership fearing the businessman could sell off the stadium, raise prices and saddle the club with debt.

No-one was charged as the source of the threats could not be identified while a Greater Manchester Police investigation against the American, who died aged 85, also failed to find those responsible.

The family still own the club while its two co-chairmen are Joel and Avram Glazer, Malcolm's sons.
