Default Re: AS ROMA - News and Rumors

Francesco Totti agrees a new one-year deal with Roma, taking him to 40-years-old

* The Italian club have said it will be a final season for Francesco Totti
* Totti spent most of last season arguing with manager Luciano Spalletti
* The 39-year-old has hinted at retirement and being a one-club player
* Totti made his debut for Roma in 1994 and was made captain in 1998

Francesco Totti has signed a new contract with Roma, although the coming season will be his last with the Italian club.

The new contract means Totti will have been associated with Roma for 25 years, having first signed a deal with the club at the age of 12 in 1989.

Totti, 39, had been embroiled in a battle with aspects of Roma which threatened to ruin his long association with the club. The captain fell out with manager Luciano Spalletti, who only used him infrequently in what could have been his last season.

However, Totti was clearly delighted after signing the new agreement, which he reached after discussions with club president James Pallotta.

He said: 'I have greatly desired this contract, which is the realization of my dream.

'I always hoped to cross and end my career with a single shirt on, that of Rome. After speaking with the President are even more convinced that remaining united we hit big targets.'

Totti is one of the most experienced active players in football, with a 22-year gap to his first team debut. That came in a Serie A clash against Brescia on March 28, 1993.

His first goal came at the age of 16 against Foggia on September 4, 1994.

Totti was then named captain of Roma in 1998, making him the youngest captain in the history of the Italian top flight. With his contract set to expire in summer 2017, that means Totti will have skippered Roma for a period of 19 years.

Roma president Pallotta was also keen to highlight Totti's impressive career with Roma and point out the importance of the date of the contract signing in club history.

He said: 'It is a nice coincidence that the anniversary of the foundation of AS Roma, Totti has signed his new contract as a player.

'No one has played more games and scored more goals for this club.

'We are honoured that he can continue playing for another season. He has earned this renewal, and now we want this his last season on the field coincides with the beginning of a new era of success for Roma.'
