Gullit makes losing start to Russian campaign
MOSCOW - DUTCH football great Ruud Gullit's first match in charge of ambitious Russian Premier League outfit Terek Grozny ended in a 1-0 defeat at home to champions Zenit St Petersburg on Sunday.
The 48-year-old two-time world player of the year's hopes of a memorable win on his debut in the Grozny dugout were ruined by Serbian striker Danko Lazovic's 14th minute goal.
The hosts made more of a game of it in the second-half against Zenit, who finished 35 points ahead of them last season, but failed to even get a point thanks to a resolute defensive display by the visitors.
Elsewhere two-time champions Rubin Kazan clinched a 2-0 away win over Kuban at Krasnodar. Rubin midfielder Alan Kasayev gave his side a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute lobbing the ball into the net over the hosts goalkeeper Alexander Budakov and skipper Christian Noboa added another with a penalty two minutes from time. -- AFP
