Zlatan Ibrahimovic will sign a one-year contract extension at Serie A champions AC Milan, according to reports.

The striker's San Siro contract expired at the end of June, a month after he went under the knife to repair damage caused to his left knee.

The surgery is expected to rule the Swedish star out for eight months, Sportsmail reported in May.

But Ibrahimovic is now set to sign a fresh year-long extension at AC Milan, which will see him continue playing until at least the age of 41, according to The Athletic.

The Italian giants were reportedly keen to retain his leadership both on and off the pitch, as they look to win back-to-back Serie A titles for the first time since 1993-94 next campaign.

Ibrahimovic also contributed eight goals and three assists in 23 league appearances last season.

Not expected to return until 2023 at the earliest, the forward informed fans of his knee surgery in May via Instagram.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to sign a one year contract extension at AC Milan according to reports. The Swedish striker was ruled out for eight months in May after having surgery on his left knee. The Serie A champions were reportedly eager to retain Ibrahimovic's leadership next season

He said: 'For the past six months I played without an ACL in my left knee.

'Swollen knee for six months. I was only able to train with the team 10 times in the last six months.

'Took more than 20 injections in six months. Emptied the knee once a week for six months. Painkillers every day for six months.

'Barely slept for six months because of the pain. Never suffered so much on and off the pitch.'

The former Manchester United, Inter, PSG and Barcelona star admitted last year that he feared retirement whilst opening up on an Italian talk show.

'I want to play as long as possible,' he said. 'As long as I have that adrenaline, I will continue.'
