Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

'We could be talking about the Premier League record goalscorer': Alan Shearer tips Mason Greenwood to break his landmark 'in 12 or 13 years' after the teenager notched his tenth top-flight goal of the season for Manchester United

* Mason Greenwood scored his 10th top-flight goal this season against West Ham
* He equalised with a thumping shot as Manchester United drew 1-1 at home
* Alan Shearer thinks Greenwood could become the Premier League record scorer
* Shearer himself holds the landmark with 260 but feels Greenwood is 'that good'
* It was the 18-year-old's 17th goal across all competitions during this campaign

Alan Shearer has backed Mason Greenwood to break his record as the all-time highest Premier League goalscorer after notching his tenth top-flight strike of the season for Manchester United.

The 18-year-old thumped home the equaliser against West Ham on Wednesday night to rescue a draw for the Red Devils - his fifth goal in seven games since the football season restarted and there is plenty of excitement around his future.

His seventeenth goal of the campaign saw him draw level with club icons Wayne Rooney and George Best for goals scored by a teenager across all competitions and has confirmed his place as one of the most prolific youngsters in the club's history.

Mason Greenwood netted his tenth top-flight goal of the season against West Ham United. He equalised to make it 1-1 and has matched a record set by Wayne Rooney and George Best. Alan Shearer believes the teenager has the potential to break his Premier League goals record

And Newcastle legend Shearer has stoked the flames, raving about Greenwood's quality and tipping him to become one of the greats of the top flight.

Speaking on Match of the Day after his performance at Old Trafford, he said: 'A potential superstar. I respect the power, he can do it with his left or right foot. He gets it away early and the goalkeepers have no chance.

'I think in 12 or 13 years time we could be talking about the Premier League record goalscorer.

I know there's so many things that can happen in your career but I think he's that good. He's 18 years of age, he's going to get bigger, he's going to get better.'

Shearer set a very high bar to reach after retiring in 2006, and most players haven't managed to get close to his impressive record of 260 goals.

Wayne Rooney sits in second place on 208, while the next best is Andy Cole on 187 and Sergio Aguero on 180.

Many pundits believe Harry Kane is in the best position to finally overtake Shearer, as the Tottenham forward is on 142 goals and only 26 years old.

He believes Greenwood could overtake him in the scoring charts 'in the next 12 or 13 years'. Shearer netted an incredible 260 goals at Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle. Greenwood is earning rave reviews for his performances after scoring five in his last seven

Greenwood has been earning rave reviews from his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as well as former United players following his impressive displays.

Dwight Yorke this week claimed he was better than team-mate Marcus Rashford and called him 'a defender's nightmare'.

'He is better than Rashford, looking at his record now,' Yorke told Apollo Tyres.

'You got to understand though he is still 18, at a development stage. Having Ole there, he would guide him along the way.'

'Mason is a defender's nightmare. If you look at us in the last two to three years, we have been passing sideways, now these guys are driving teams back into their own area. He is a fantastic talent.'
