Former Liverpool coach Andy O'Boyle has emerged as a contender for the deputy director of football role at Manchester United.
The Old Trafford club want to appoint someone to assist director John Murtough as they continue to re-shape behind the scenes.
O'Boyle is currently head of elite performance with the Premier League where he helps formulate programmes and initiatives to enhance performance management for things such as fitness testing across the league.
While his background is steeped in sports science, O'Boyle's general and varied experience is understood to have stood him in good stead with the recruitment agency used by United as they assess contenders.

From Ballymena, Northern Ireland, O'Boyle had a brief spell at United's academy working with nine and 10-year-olds back in 2006 prior to working with Wrexham's first-team then went on to become head of sports science at Coventry City before joining Liverpool in 2011 where he graduated to first-team fitness coach and worked with England's U21s.
United believe Murtough needs help with the scale of the task required to meet demands of returning the club to its former glory.
Murtough and chief executive Richard Arnold are working through United's managerial candidates over the coming days as they look to reach a decision on their next boss by the end of the month.
Ajax coach Erik ten Hag is emerging as a leading contender. He is ready to leave his club regardless at the end of this season with assistant Mitchell van der Graag. United are reluctant to pay large sums in compensation though PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel are also under consideration. The latter has underlined his commitment to staying with the European champions as it stands.
