Everton have held positive initial talks with Carlo Ancelotti over becoming their next manager and further negotiations are planned.
Owner Farhad Moshiri has taken the opportunity of speaking to the 60-year-old and is excited at the possibility of being able to entice the three times Champions League winner to Goodison Park.
Ancelotti, who left his role as head coach of Napoli last week, had been considered for the vacant manager's post at Arsenal prior to them intensifying talks with Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta.
That has left the door ajar for Everton and Ancelotti is receptive to the idea of managing in the Premier League once again following his successful spell at Chelsea.
Moshiri has already held face-to-face talks with another candidate David Moyes as he continues a thorough interview process to find a replacement for Marco Silva who was sacked on December 6.
Moyes remains a strong contender but Ancelotti's excellent CV would excite Everton supporters who have been left disaffected by a rudderless season.
Those fans have been lifted in recent weeks by performances under interim boss Duncan Ferguson, who would remain part of the coaching staff under the new manager.
After masterminding victory over Chelsea and a draw at Manchester United, crowd favourite Ferguson will be in charge again for Wednesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester City which is expected to be in front of a full house at Goodison Park.

Ferguson's results have bought Moshiri vital time in his search for a manager but he would hope to have a new man in place by the end of the week.
Ancelotti is still being paid by Napoli which will also have to be resolved before he takes up a new job.
Everton tweeted late on Monday night saying: 'In the 11 days since Marco Silva left the Club, the Everton Board has been working to recruit a new permanent manager – and has held meetings with a number of candidates.
'We can confirm that thus far no contract offer has been made and no candidate has chosen to withdraw from the process.
'While the Club is keen to confirm a new permanent manager as soon as possible, the only important duty is that the right appointment is made.
'While our process continues, Duncan Ferguson will remain as caretaker manager and will take charge of the side for Wednesday night's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester City.'
