'I'm concerned when a new player is given the captaincy': Roy Keane says Harry Maguire being made skipper at Manchester United raises doubts about other players... but admits he comes across as a 'sensible lad'

* Roy Keane believes Harry Maguire becoming Man United captain raises doubts
* The England international had been handed the armband permanently this week
* But ex-United skipper Keane says the choice calls other players into question
* Keane also admitted that Maguire appears 'a sensible lad' before Liverpool clash

Roy Keane believes that Harry Maguire becoming Manchester United's new permanent captain calls other players at the club into question.

The England international moved from Leicester at the start of the season for a world-record fee for a defender, and has already taken up the mantle left behind by Ashley Young's departure.

But despite Maguire already having donned the armband on multiple occasions since signing, Keane says that the decision raises doubts over individuals that were already established at the Old Trafford.

And as Maguire prepares to lead the team out against rampant league leaders Liverpool on Sunday, Keane told Sky Sports: 'I'm concerned when a new player is giving the captaincy as it doesn't say much about the other lads, but he's a good age and he comes across as a sensible lad.'

United's mark of confidence in the 26-year-old was backed up by boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praising Maguire's leadership abilities, and ex-captain Keane also explained how the centre back could approach his new role.

He added: 'It's all about the team. Don't be distracted by it, by the captaincy, enjoy it. You don't need the armband to be a leader but he does seem very proud of it.

'It is a big responsibility. I always try to focus on trying to be the best player in training, the best player on a weekend and hopefully the rest of the players will follow.'

Another club legend, Gary Neville, congratulated Maguire on Twitter earlier in the week but then warned him that he will likely face criticism both on and off the field.

The pundit said: 'Congratulations! The s*** will come thick and fast in the next year or two.

'Stick at it as you are the captain of the biggest club in the world and it will rise and win again.'

And although Solskjaer has alluded to a leadership group at the club, the Norwegian stressed that Maguire would remain at the forefront of it.

Speaking on Friday, he explained: 'Harry is wearing the captain's armband and will keep wearing it. He's been a leader in the group, I've been impressed by his leadership skills, so he will continue wearing the armband.

'He's come in and everything about him tells me he's a leader, he's part of a group we've had that have been leading this young group, David (de Gea), Marcus (Rashford), Harry, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband.'
