The first Uruguayan since Diego Forlan

Varela impressed the United coaches during a trial at Old Trafford, and is now expected to challenge Rafael for a starting berth. However, the Uraguayan was not yet a starter at his old club Penarol. He is however, starting right back for the Uruguay Under 20s team, and will be looking to impress at the U20 World Cup in Turkey later this month.

It has been reported that Varela is a technical player, who has ability playing as an attacking full back, but is also a proficient defender. The full back lacks physicality currently, but the United coaches will hope to get him in good condition before he makes his debut for the club.

Manchester United’s scouting network has done well in the past in America, bringing the Da Silva twins, as well as Javier Hernandez to the club in recent years. David Moyes will be hoping Varela can replicate the success of these players, and that he does not follow in the footsteps of Bebe. Varela will be the first Uruguayan to play for the club since Diego Forlan.
