Default Re: Manchester United - News and Rumors

Manchester United 'to create transfer committee of three ex-players to make sure they avoid signing flops' as club look to copy Liverpool-style model

* Darren Fletcher was at meeting where new transfer committee was discussed
* Rio Ferdinand is another former Manchester United star who could be involved
* Rivals Liverpool already have committee approach to making new additions
* United are desperate to avoid their big-spending wasteful ways of the past

Manchester United are putting together a transfer committee of three ex-players in a bid to ensure the club moves away from the big-spending wasteful approach of the past.

The idea, not dissimilar to Liverpool's transfer committee, was discussed at Carrington with former stalwart Darren Fletcher present.

The former United midfielder is anticipated to take charge of the group tasked with making sure the club avoid signing expensive flops, according to the Sun.

Alexis Sanchez was an expensive recruit and the club are desperate to avoid more flops

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces a vital summer with a massive rebuilding job on his hands and the cost of getting recruitment wrong again will be extremely damaging.

Rio Ferdinand is another name in the frame who has been propositioned about a role on the committee.

Fierce rivals Liverpool have found success with their set-up of Jurgen Klopp working with sporting director Michael Edwards, scouting chief Dave Fallows and goalkeeping coach John Achterberg.

And it appears that United are trying to follow suit having splurged enormous amounts of cash in recent years of instability following Sir Alex Ferguson's reign.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to make vast changes to the squad this summer. Nicky Butt works as academy manager and the club want to involve plenty of ex players

The club may struggle to offload Alexis Sanchez, who earns £375,000-per-week and they have one of the largest wage bills in the Premier League with no Champions League football to boost the coffers again next season.

Academy boss Nicky Butt was also in the meeting on Wednesday and Quinton Fortune is being primed to take up a coaching position.

The club want to sign 'Manchester United type players' and feel involvement of former stars will help identify those that fit the bill.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has pledged that there will be money for Solskjaer to spend this summer but only time will tell if the newfangled recruitment strategy pays off.
