Angel Gomes
Quote:
It was an indication of his potential, he is even young for his age group and was born on the deadline to be involved in last season's FA Youth Cup. An outstanding performer at lower age levels, he earned the Premier Cup's Most Valuable Player award in 2015 despite the Reds failing to reach the latter stages of the competition. Gomes is comfortable and assured in possession and has a wide passing range, while also providing a goal threat from a no.10 role. His maiden strike for the Under-18 at Derby County was a pearler and his tally of three goals in 10 starts, with seven further appearances off the bench, included a dramatic winner at Norwich City. A captain of England at Under-16 level, he is widely regarded as having outstanding potential and there will be the hope he can continue to improve and handle any physical challenges, particularly if he has a growth spurt. There were more positive signs at the start of the 2016/17 season as he pulled the strings in a no.10 role and supplied goals and assists aplenty for the youth team, including rising to score a header against West Brom to show add another string to his bow. He even claimed a hat-trick before his 16th birthday away to Everton. His fine work with England also continued as he skippered the Under-17s to an outstanding triumph in the Croatia Cup, winning all three games including an 8-1 demolition of Germany. Kieran McKenna commented: "Angel is clever and I think with him, first of all, he's got a really fantastic attitude towards the game. He loves his football and is bright and curious. He's interested in every training session and you can see that on the pitch. "He's always bright, always looking for his team-mates and always looking at the opposition too, trying to find a way to exploit any weaknesses they have got. He has a fantastic football brain really and a good attitude to go with it." Despite picking up an injury that ruled him out of England duty in the Under-17 European Championship finals, he ended the season on a real high. He became the youngest-ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Youth-Team Player of the Year award and, the following day, trained with the first team ahead of possible inclusion in the squad for the final Premier League game of 2016/17 against Crystal Palace.
