Default [UCL] Young Boys 2-1 Manchester United

Solskjaer blasts 'SLOPPY' Man United after shock defeat by Young Boys as he blames loss on poor 'discipline' and 'concentration'... with Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent off and Jesse Lingard gifting winner

* Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Young Boys in the Champions League
* The Red Devils led early on but Aaron Wan-Bissaka's red card changed the game
* Jesse Lingard's poor backpass then gave the Swiss side a 95th-minute winner
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants his United side to have better discipline in future
* The Norwegian claims Cristiano Ronaldo should have had a second-half penalty

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer warned that Manchester United must learn from their mistakes in Europe if they to avoid another early Champions League exit.

Tuesday night’s shock defeat in Bern echoed a 2-1 loss to Basaksehir in Istanbul last November that was the beginning of the end of United’s group campaign as they dropped into the Europa League.

Solskjaer’s side still have plenty of time to recover in their remaining five games in Group F, but the manager wants better discipline after seeing United punished for Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card and Jesse Lingard’s late mistake.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims Man United need to learn from their mistakes made at Young Boys. Jesse Lingard's poor backpass gave Jordan Siebatcheu (right) a stoppage-time winner in Bern

‘A lack of concentration, you make a mistake and you get done. We did that last year, conceding two sloppy counter-attacks against Basaksehir and lost that game in the last seconds today.

‘So we know we've given ourselves a more difficult task. We did last year when everyone thought we were through after two games.

‘You need 10 or 12 points: win your home games and one away from home. We've lost the opportunity to get three points, but we've got two home games next and got to focus on those two.’

Lingard looked on dejected after his mistake earned United a loss in the Champions League

Solskjaer says he understand the decision to send off Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a high challenge

On the red card, Solskjaer said: ‘I can understand why he gives it. Aaron is normally a very astute tackler, one of the best in the world, but he takes a touch that goes too far. It's never a dangerous tackle because he hits him in the front of his foot.

‘We saw with Harvey Elliot that you sometimes can see bad injuries, but it was never reckless or malicious. Maybe inexperience to go through without the ball, but the boy wasn't going to be injured. And it makes it difference after that with 10 men.’

On Lingard’s error, the United boss added: ‘Jesse wants to play it safe and misplaces the pass. That happens in football. Harry hindsight is a very good player. If Jesse gets that chance again he turns, swivels and boots the ball the other way.’

The United boss is livid that Cristiano Ronaldo (right) was not given a second-half penalty

However, Solskjaer felt that French referee Francois Letexi backed away from giving a penalty for Mohamed Ali Camara’s challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half because he would have had to show a red card as well.

‘He shoves him with his arm and he’s one-on-one with the keeper. But he probably didn't do it as he would have had to send him off and that’s sometimes what you get with young refs,’ said Solskjaer who put a consoling arm around Ronaldo when he surprisingly took off United’s goal scorer in the 72nd minute.

‘He's exceptional but we have to look after him and it felt like the right moment to take him off.’

'This is Basaksehir all over again!': Rio Ferdinand laments shock Manchester United defeat after Jesse Lingard's 'big mistake' and Aaron Wan-Bissaka red card 'turning the game on its head'

* Rio Ferdinand was left frustrated by Manchester United's loss to Young Boys
* Ferdinand compared the defeat to last season's loss to Istanbul Basaksehir
* Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Young Boys in their first group game
* Jesse Lingard made a 'big mistake' as Young Boys scored a late winner
* Ferdinand says the game changed when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off

Rio Ferdinand compared Manchester United's shock loss to Young Boys to their disastrous defeat away to Istanbul Basaksehir last season.

United were beaten 2-1 by Young Boys in their opening Champions League group game in Bern on Wednesday night.

Last season Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side lost to Basaksehir by the same scoreline and weren't able to progress from their group because of it.

Ferdinand also criticised Jesse Lingard's 'big mistake' which led to United suffering a late defeat.

United had taken the lead courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo, but their task was made harder following Aaron Wan-Bissaka's red card in the 35th minute.

Young Boys took advantage of their numerical superiority, with Moumi Ngamaleu equalising.

It looked as if the game was going to end in a draw but Lingard, who had entered the fray as a substitute for Ronaldo, gave the ball away with a loose backpass, which was seized upon by Jordan Siebatcheu, who scored the winner for Young Boys late on to spark jubilant scenes.

The former United defender stressed that the dismissal of Wan-Bissaka altered the course of the game significantly.

Ferdinand believes the game changed following the sending off of Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: 'This is Basaksehir all over again. It's a big mistake from Jesse. Wherever you go in Europe you've got to be on your game. It was a bad tackle from Wan-Bissaka and the game turned on its head totally.'

Ex-United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should have made substitutions at an earlier stage.

Scholes said: 'It's not a complete disaster. Jesse will be disappointed. It all stems from the sending off. United were quite comfortable up to that point.

'They really couldn't get out of their half in the second half. I think they needed to bring a bit of pace on earlier, with Martial or Greenwood.'

Scholes was also unimpressed with Wan-Bissaka's red. Wan-Bissaka caught his opponent's ankle and the BT Sport pundits agreed that, while there wasn't any real intent, there was no choice but for the 23-year-old to be dismissed.

Scholes said: 'He causes himself his own problem with a really clumsy touch. I don't think he meant to do it but he had to go.'

United captain Harry Maguire refused to criticise Lingard after the game and said his team-mates will support him.

Maguire said: 'That's football. People make mistakes – we're not blaming Jesse.

'I'm sure everyone on that pitch today has made a mistake. I'm sure Jesse will pick himself up.'

Lingard rebuilt his confidence with a goal-laden loan spell at West Ham in the second half of last season after falling out of favour with Solskjaer.

The 28-year-old is desperate to re-establish himself and Crouch is concerned his night in Switzerland could affect his self belief again.

'I hope that doesn't affect his confidence, he's got back to a point now where he's scored and he's playing well,' the former England striker said.

United captain Harry Maguire refused to criticise Lingard following the game in Switzerland

'He's back at Man United and I know that's where he wants to be. Giving that goal away and watching the celebrations must really hurt.

'These things happen and he's got to bounce back from that. But I just worry because he's had so many knocks but he just can't let that affect him.'

Rio Ferdinand chimed in: 'You have to have thick skin. These players even more now than we did. That's the job of a footballer, you have to make mistakes and deal with it.

'He needs the confidence from his manager to say, "you made a mistake, here's another chance.'

United return to action in the Premier League this weekend, away to West Ham on Sunday.

Peter Schmeichel SLAMS Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 'strange' tactics and team selection against Young Boys - questioning why Cristiano Ronaldo was subbed and Mason Greenwood not used

* Peter Schmeichel criticised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactics in the Champions League
* Manchester United were beaten 2-1 away from home by Swiss side Young Boys
* Schmeichel questioned Solskjaer's starting line up which missed key players
* He also disagreed with subbing Cristiano Ronaldo and leaving out Mason Greenwood

Peter Schmeichel is the latest ex-Manchester United player to blast manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 'strange' tactics in their 2-1 loss to Young Boys.

United suffered a humiliating opener to their Champions League campaign against the Swiss minnows, despite Cristiano Ronaldo putting them ahead.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka's first half red card led Solskjaer to make several tactical and personnel changes, but the Red Devils were undone when a horror pass from Jesse Lingard allowed Young Boys' forward Jordan Siebatcheu to score a 95th-minute winner.

Peter Schmeichel has slammed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactics against Young Boys. The United legend said not playing Mason Greenwood at all was the wrong decision

Solskjaer has now lost seven of 11 Champions League matches as United boss and Schmeichel was one of many observers to question the Norwegian's thinking against Young Boys.

The former United goalkeeper suggested Solskjaer may have had one eye on the club's weekend Premier League fixture against West Ham, which influenced his selection with the likes of Raphael Varane not starting the match.

'We can always question team selection, I just think when your next game is Sunday at West Ham, first game in the Champions League – why don’t you play your best team, your best players?’ Schmeichel told CBS Sports.

Referring to Solskjaer's post-match complaints about the artificial pitch at Young Boys stadium, Schmeichel said: ‘Regardless of astroturf, whatever excuses you come up with, get that win on there.

Schmeichel said substituting Cristiano Ronaldo for Jesse Lingard was a 'strange' decision

‘I think when you look at Mason Greenwood, he’s in great form, he’s a young man, he creates chances and not only does he score he creates chances for others.

‘(Raphael) Varane has just come to the club but I would’ve loved to see those two playing.'

Schmeichel was particularly incensed with Solskjaer's decision to take off goal-scorer Ronaldo, saying he could have been the difference maker in the tie.

The United legend also expressed his bafflement at replacing the Portuguese forward with Jesse Lingard, who is not a striker and was out of favour at United not that long ago.

‘We as fans want Ronaldo to be on the pitch, regardless of if they’re down to 10 men, if he gets the ball he can make something happen,' Schmeichel said.

‘They were hoping for a very long time to have that kind of player and he puts somebody on that he last year he sent out on loan (Lingard). He’s a player he tried to sell, tried to loan out, and he replaces him with Ronaldo, I just find it strange.'

Schmeichel also took issue with Solskjaer's decision to bring on Anthony Martial at the end

Solskjaer's decision to bring on Anthony Martial when United were seeking to close out the game was another head-scratcher for Schmeichel.

‘But to get a result in-house, it’s 1-1, he puts Martial on, we talked about that, that was really weird because Martial doesn’t defend well,' he said.

He doesn’t work hard, he’s a goalscorer but we’re down to 10 men, we don’t expect to create many chances, so why put Martial on?’

Schmeichel echoed the concern of fellow United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes, who also felt Solskjaer's tactics and substitutions were found wanting once more.
