17 December 2007 - Yet Another Brazilian Hat-Trick

On 17 December 2007, FIFA presented its World Player of the Year awards. It was a sweep for Brazil, with Kaká and Marta named World Player of the Year and Women's World Player of the Year, respectively. It was the first--and to date only--time a single nation claimed both awards.

Earlier that year, Kaká led AC Milan to the 2006-07 Champions League title, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with 10 goals. Marta, meanwhile, had helped her club, Swedish side Umeċ IK, claim a double, winning both the league and the Swedish Cup. She also led them to that year's UEFA Women's Cup Final, where they lost to Arsenal LFC, 1-0.

The 2007 award was the second consecutive Player of the Year award for Marta, who won it a third time in 2008.

Brazil walked away with a total of three honors, as FIFA conferred the 2007 Presidential Award on Pelé for his years of service to the game.

20 December 2003 - Rooney inspires Everton win, Everton 3-2 Leicester City

Teenager Wayne Rooney came off the bench for the second weekend running to inspire Everton to a Barclays Premier League victory.

The 18-year-old had appeared as a replacement at Portsmouth the previous Saturday and helped the Toffees to their first away win of the season, and the trick worked again as he scored to help wrap up the points. The result moved Everton four places up the table to 11th and put them four points clear of the relegation zone, which Leicester City stayed out of only on goal difference.

The visitors, promoted the previous season, were under pressure early on with Billy McKinlay forced to clear off the line from Alan Stubbs and Alessandro Pistone and Thomas Gravesen both going close for Everton.

The Toffees' pressure paid off when they took the lead in the 33rd minute when Leicester goalkeeper Ian Walker's block of a flick-on by Lee Carsley hit Leicester defender Steve Howey and flew in for an own goal.

On the stroke of half-time the visitors equalised when Muzzy Izzet touched a free-kick just outside the area into the path of Les Ferdinand, who lashed home his sixth BPL goal of the season and 16th against Everton in his career.

Leicester turned the match on its ahead in the 58th minute when James Scowcroft headed them in front from Jordan Stewart’s left-wing cross. Everton reacted by bringing on Rooney, and he turned the momentum back Everton's way by scoring from the edge of the area after good work by Kevin Campbell.

Twelve minutes from time, fellow substitute Duncan Ferguson flicked the ball on to Tomasz Radzinski who hit the winner. Only a superb save by Everton keeper Nigel Martyn prevented Izzet from grabbing an equaliser.

The two sides finished one place apart in the Barclays Premier League table with Everton avoiding relegation in 17th, six points above Leicester who immediately returned to the Championship.

On this day in 2007: Berbatov stars in 10-goal thriller
29 December 2007 - Tottenham Hotspur 6-4 Reading

Dimitar Berbatov scored four times as Tottenham Hotspur beat Reading in an extraordinary encounter at White Hart Lane.

Eight of the goals came in the second half, in which the visitors briefly led three times before Berbatov had the final say.

It was the second time in three months that Reading had scored four times and lost, following their 7-4 defeat at Portsmouth in September. And it was also the second goal feast in three days at White Hart Lane following Spurs' 5-1 win over Fulham on Boxing Day.

Berbatov opened the scoring in the sixth minute from close range after Robbie Keane had beaten the offside trap to collect a pass from Steed Malbranque.

Ten minutes later Reading drew level when Kalifa Cisse scored his first goal for the club after Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson punched Nicky Shorey's long free-kick straight to him.

Keane missed a great chance to restore the hosts' lead just before the break and was punished in the 53rd minute when Royals defender Ivar Ingimarsson put the visitors ahead by heading home Shorey's corner.

Dave Kitson was then twice denied by Robinson as Reading went in search of a third but the next goal went to the hosts in the 63rd minute.

Substitute Jermain Defoe had only been on the field two minutes when his right-wing cross was cleared by Graeme Murty straight to Berbatov, who shot into the roof of the net to equalise.

Reading, still searching for their first away Barclays Premier League win of the season, refused to give up and Kitson headed home another Shorey corner to restore their lead.

Berbatov completed his first BPL hat-trick in the 73rd minute after hesitancy in the Royals defence but only 60 seconds later Reading went 4-3 up as Kitson ran on to Stephen Hunt's pass and lifted the ball over Robinson.

Reading only held on to that lead for two minutes before Tom Huddlestone found Steed Malbranque who fired into the corner.

And in the 79th minute Spurs took the lead for only the second time in the match when Defoe was quickest to react after Marcus Hahnemann saved a penalty from Keane, awarded after he had been fouled by Ibrahima Sonko.

Berbatov made it 6-4 four minutes later as he shot past Hahnemann, after receiving a pass from Younes Kaboul, for his eighth BPL goal of the campaign.

While Spurs finished 11th, after two successive fifth place finishes, Reading were relegated on goal difference after two seasons in the Barclays Premier League.

16 January 1994 - Verdy Kawasaki Kick Into Gear

On 16 January 1994, Verdy Kawasaki won the first J-League Championship by drawing 1-1 with Kashima Antlers before a crowd of 59,715 at Tokyo's Olympic Stadium. It was the second leg of the final and Verdy had won the first leg 2-0 to claim the title on aggregate.

The J-League, Japan's first professional league, was founded in 1992 with 10 clubs. For the first year, they played a cup competition only, debuting the first league matches in 1993. That first season was played in two 18-match stages, named after their sponsors as the Suntory Series (the first stage) and the NICOS Series (the second stage). The teams at the top of the table at the end of each stage then met in the two-leg Suntory Championship in Tokyo to decide the title.

Kashima, as first-stage winners, and Verdy, the second-stage winners, played the first leg on 9 January 1994, with Verdy emerging as 2-0 victors with goals from playmaker Kazuyoshi Miura (60') and Brazilian midfielder Bismarck Faria (89'). In the second leg, Kashima closed the gap with a 38th-minute striker from Brazilian forward Alcindo Sartori, but Kazu restored the two-goal advantage by finding the back of the net in the 82nd minute.

Verdy repeated as champions in 1995, but have since fallen into Japan's second division, where they finished 20th out of 22 teams in 2014. Kashima, meanwhile, have become the J-League's most successful club with seven titles.*

In 2001, Verdy moved to Tokyo and changed their name to Tokyo Verdy 1969.

18 January 2006 - Lilly Travels To The Third Century

On 18 January 2006, United States forward/midfielder and captain Kristine Lilly became the first player--male or female--to reach 300 caps when she appeared against Norway in the Four Nations Tournament.

Lilly joined the USWNT in 1987 while she was still in high school and has helped them claim several honors, including two World Cups (1991, 1999) and two Olympic gold medals (1996, 2004).

In the 2006 Four Nations Tournament, the US won their match against Norway, 3-1. Lilly contributed the opening goal, her 105th, which tied her with Michelle Akers for second place on the USWNT's all-time goal scoring list. She has since passed Akers to hold second place outright, scoring a total of 129 goals in 342 appearances.

4 February 2012 ~ Arsenal's 7-1 win against Blackburn

Robin van Persie hit a hat-trick and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored twice as Arsenal ended a four-match winless run in the Barclays Premier League in emphatic style against Blackburn Rovers.

Arsenal, whose last league win had been on New Year's Eve, never looked back after van Persie's goal inside two minutes. Already on 19 BPL goals for the season before the match, Van Persie almost immediately notched his 20th when he tucked in Theo Walcott's cross from the right.

Arsene Wenger's team built on the goal with plenty of possession in the first half-hour while Blackburn failed to have a shot. But it was the visitors who struck next, with Morten Gamst Pedersen curling a free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards in the 31st minute.

It took seven minutes for Arsenal to restore their lead with Walcott again the provider from the right for van Persie, this time at the near post to receive his pass. Two minutes later it was 3-1 as van Persie played a reverse pass to Oxlade-Chamberlain, who collected the ball, rounded goalkeeper Paul Robinson and tucked in his first Barclays Premier League goal. Shortly afterwards, Rovers' task was made tougher when defender Gael Givet was shown a straight red card for a foul on van Persie.

Arsenal scored twice in five minutes after half-time to kill any hopes Steve Kean's side may have had of a second-half comeback. First Mikel Arteta made it 4-1 with a shot from the edge of the area after Rovers had failed to deal with a van Persie corner and then Oxlade-Chamberlain got his second after a powerful run by Walcott.

Van Persie completed his second hat-trick of the season in the 62nd minute when he knocked a Francis Coquelin cross past Robinson. In the third minute of stoppage-time a shot from substitute Thierry Henry deflected off Blackburn defender Scott Dann and into the net to complete the rout.

Van Persie finished the season as the Barclays Premier League's leading scorer with 30 goals as the Gunners finished third. The loss left Blackburn three points adrift of safety and their 11-year spell in the top flight came to an end as they finished 19th.

Goal.com - Ahmad Reza Hikmatyar
15 Februari 1995:
Kerusuhan Lansdowne Road

Irlandia, Jack Charlton, sebelum laga berlangsung.

Kehkawatiran Charlton ternyata jadi kenyataan.

Irlandia.

Namun suara para*Hooligans seketika terdiam sejanak memasuki menit ke-22. Saat itu umpan manis John Sheridan mampu diteruskan David Kelly, lewat sepakan kaki kiri yang keras! Kedudukan di papan skor berubah 1-0 untuk sang tuan rumah,*The Boys in Green.

20 February 1897 - It Took A While, But It Eventually Caught On

On 20 February 1897, Ireland made history by becoming the first national team in modern history to compete under the guidance of an official coach, as Billy Crone took charge for their opening match against England in that year's British Home Championship. Unfortunately for the Irish, it didn't help, and England defeated them 6-0.

Prior to Crone's appointment, national team players were selected by their respective football associations, then coached by the team captain. Before overseeing the national team, Crone - himself a former Irish international with 12 caps - had established himself as the manager of his hometown club, Belfast's Distillery FC, where he played his club ball until his retirement as a player in 1893. He remained the manager of Distillery (now known as Lisburn Distillery) during and after his time in charge of Ireland, leading them to five Irish League titles between 1895 and 1906.

For the remainder of the tournament, Ireland won their next match against Wales, 4-3, but lost their final match against Scotland, 5-1, to finish third out of the four teams.

In hiring Crone, Ireland were well ahead of their competition. For comparison, England hired their first manager in 1946, while Wales and Scotland hired their first managers in 1954.

23 February 2002 - Mourinho Home Losses Are Like A Good Steak - Rare

On 23 February 2002, visitors Beira Mar defeated hosts Porto 2-3 in a Portuguese top flight league match. It was Porto's first home loss under new manager José Mourinho, who had taken charge the previous month. It would also be Mourinho's last home loss in a league match until 2011, a run of 150 matches that extended from his time at Porto through his tenure at Chelsea, Inter, and Real Madrid.

While generally regarded as a footnote to Mourinho's record, the match itself was an exciting one. Porto played a man down for most of it, as defender Jorge Andrade was red carded in the 25th minute for a challenge on Beira Mar midfielder Bruno Ribeiro on the edge of the box. Cristiano Rocho scored with the ensuing free kick to put the visitors ahead 1-0. But despite being down to 10 men, Porto equalized with a 42nd-minute goal from striker Benni McCarthy.

Beira Mar striker Fary Faye, who had come on a substitute at the start of the second half, restored the lead for his side in the 51st minute. The situation then got worse for Porto, as midfielder Deco received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 74th minute, reducing the hosts to nine men. Amazingly, however, Mourinho's undermanned Porto again equalized, this time with a 82nd minute goal from midfielder Carlos Paredes. But in the dying moments, Beira Mar overran Porto's depleted midfield, allowing Fary to score his second goal of the match in the 85th minute to give his side the 2-3 win.

Mourinho remained with Porto through the 2003-04 season, before moving to Chelsea in June 2004. After leaving Chelsea in September 2007, he took some time off before moving to Inter in June 2008. His unbeaten run includes 66 matches at Chelsea, setting a Premier League record that the club extended to 86 under Mourinho's successors Avram Grant (2007-08) and Luiz Felipe Scolari (2008-09). Porto's streak, meanwhile, ended eleven matches into the 2004-05 season with a 1-0 loss to Boavista on 20 November. It was their sixth home match under new manager Victor Fernández.

The streak ended on 2 April 2011, when Real Madrid team lost at home to Sporting de Gijón.
