Ryan Giggs 'drunkenly headbutted girlfriend Kate Greville and attacked her younger sister at his £1.7m mansion', as court hears he 'left her in fear of violence on many occasions'

* Wales manager, 47, denies assaulting 36-year-old PR executive at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester
* Giggs also accused of assaulting her younger sister, Emma, during the same alleged incident on November 1
* Footballer also been charged with controlling and coercive behaviour over his relationship with Ms Greville
* Denies the charges against him and was given conditional bail pending crown court appearance on May 26

Ryan Giggs drunkenly headbutted his former girlfriend Kate Greville at his £1.7million mansion, left her in fear of violence on 'many occasions' and also attacked her sister, a court heard today.

The Wales manager, 47, denies assaulting the 36-year-old PR executive at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on November 1, and then hitting her younger sister, Emma, during the same alleged incident.

The Manchester United legend has also been charged with controlling and coercive behaviour over his relationship with Ms Greville, with prosecutors alleging the abuse lasted almost three years.

Giggs, wearing a black suit, white shirt and dark blue tie, appeared in the dock at Manchester Magistrates' Court for his first appearance today as the three charges against him were read out and he entered not guilty pleas.

Prosecutor Andrea Griffiths said there was a pattern of 'controlling behaviour' from the ex-United star between December 2017 and November 2020.

She added that Giggs 'isolated' Kate from her 'work colleagues and friends' and he subjected her to 'degrading treatment' designed to 'keep her in the relationship'.

'There was a fear of violence on many occasions... if she challenged him or tried to break away, there were threats of physical or professional harm,' Ms Griffiths said.

Giggs, who today spoke only to confirm his name, address and enter his not guilty pleas, has been bailed to appear at Manchester Crown Court on May 26.

His conditions of bail are he must not contact Kate or Emma Greville or go to any address where they are.

The hearing, lasting 13 minutes, dealt with procedural matters as the case was sent to the crown court for a further hearing. There was no sign of either of the Greville sisters at court today.

Ms Griffiths, prosecuting, said the charges were too serious to be dealt with by the magistrates court and requested that the trial be sent to the crown court.

Ms Griffiths said: 'The crown says these matters are not suitable for summary trial and should be allocated to the crown court.'

Ian Lewis, defending, said he did not have any submissions to make about where the trial should be allocated.

Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram directed that the trial should be heard at Manchester Crown Court.

Judge Ikram said: 'I accept the crown submissions at this stage that these matters should be allocated to the crown court.'

Last week it was revealed Giggs had found love with a lingerie model who has 'supported' him through the charges.

The 47-year-old was photographed holding hands with Zara Charles, 33, in Hale, Cheshire, during an afternoon walk.

Police were called to Giggs' address at 10.05pm on November 1 to reports of a disturbance. A woman in her 30s was treated for injuries at the scene.

The former footballer was arrested and later bailed pending further inquiries.

Giggs met Kate in 2013 after she helped promote his Hotel Football venue, launched with ex-United teammate Gary Neville.

Giggs went public with the relationship with Ms Greville in 2018 after whisking her away for a holiday in Italy, eight months after his divorce.

He divorced his wife Stacey in December 2017 and they finalised a £40million settlement after he cheated on her with model and Big Brother star Imogen Thomas during their 10-year marriage.

Giggs has missed Wales' recent Nations League fixtures, following his arrest late last year.

In April 2018 Ms Greville was appointed head of PR and communications for GG Hospitality, the hospitality management firm co-owned by Giggs and former United team-mate Gary Neville.

She was involved in the launch of their Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester city centre before she took up a new PR consultancy post last July with a former employer.

The Wales manager missed his country's recent Nations League fixtures, following his arrest late last year

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has announced caretaker boss Robert Page will manage the country at this summer's European Championship finals.

Giggs won 64 caps for Wales and had a glittering playing career with Manchester United, winning 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, four FA Cups and three League Cups.

He is also a co-owner of League Two side Salford City.

Giggs initially stood down from managing the Welsh national team following his arrest in November.

The Welsh FA then announced caretaker boss Robert Page would continue to manage the side at this summer's European Championship finals.

Ryan Giggs willing to help Wales prepare for Euro 2020 despite his removal as head coach after he was charged with three separate offences including assaulting his ex-girlfriend

* Ryan Giggs could lend a hand to Wales new head coach Rob Page for Euro 2020
* The former Manchester United winger was removed as his nation's head coach
* Giggs was charged with three separate offences last month, including ABH

Ryan Giggs is ready to lend a hand to Wales' Euro 2020 campaign despite Rob Page replacing him as manager for the tournament after the former winger was charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Wales appointed Page after Giggs was charged with actual bodily harm and two other offences last month. The former Manchester United star has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Page revealed he had spoken to Giggs recently and that the former Wales player, who steered them to qualification, was open to helping on an informal basis as they prepare for only their second major tournament since 1958.

'We've been in touch and I had a great conversation with him last week,' said Page. 'You don't go from being friends and colleagues and working together in a close environment to then not speaking.

'Of course I'm going to speak to him and he wants what's best for Wales. With regards to decisions and finalising things that will be me, but what Ryan has said is that if I need any advice or a different perspective on things then he's always going to be there.

'It's great to hear that but ultimately now the decisions moving forward will be from myself and my coaching staff.

'These are difficult circumstances, there is no hiding from that. We are dealing with the situation in the best way possible. Common sense prevails and it's continuity that the players want as well.

'Finally and thankfully we are all clear about what is going to happen, Ryan included, and we can focus on the job in hand – preparing a team for Euro 2020.'

Ryan Giggs will still lend a hand to Wales' Euro 2020 campaign after being replaced as coach. Rob Page has stepped into the breach after Giggs was charged with ABH and other offences

Page has held talks with senior players, including captain Gareth Bale, since he was handed the reins. Wales open their tournament against Switzerland on June 11, with the match currently due to take place in Baku.

They are due to have a training camp in Portugal before they travel to the tournament, with Page keeping a close eye on his players during the final rounds of league action.

He added: '[The players] have not let outside influences affect them and have been calm through the process. We don't take out foot off the gas. We up the intensity if and get them ready mentally and physically.'

Giggs was charged because of an alleged row with Kate Greville, 36, and her sister at his £1.7million mansion in Worsley, Greater Manchester.

He is accused of causing actual bodily harm to PR worker Ms Greville at his home in November.

He faces an additional charge of coercive and controlling behaviour between December 2017 and November 2020.

Domestic violence trial of Ryan Giggs who is accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her sister is delayed by SEVEN MONTHS to August due to court case backlog

* Ryan Giggs will go on trial in August accused of beating girlfriend Kate Greville
* Case was due to be heard this month but has been delayed due to Covid backlog
* Giggs, 47, has denied allegations and formally pleaded not guilty to all charges

The domestic violence trial of ex-Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs has been put back seven months due to the ongoing backlog of court cases.

His hearing had been fixed for next Monday at Manchester Crown Court but no courtroom at the venue is available to take the case.

On Tuesday, Judge Hilary Manley explained: 'Unfortunately it has become necessary to vacate this trial from the list.

'The reason for this is because there is not a court available to accommodate this trial.

'Due to the large backlog of court cases which has been exacerbated by the pandemic and the need for social distancing, this is a situation which is a daily reality for the criminal courts.'

Chris Daw QC, representing Giggs, said: 'I have of course explained the situation to him and he is extremely disappointed at the development.

'He is grateful efforts have been made to fix the earliest possible new date.'

Giggs, 47, who did not attend today's hearing, will now face trial on August 8.

Giggs is accused of controlling and coercive behaviour against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, 36, between August 2017 and November 2020.

He is also accused of assaulting Ms Greville causing her actual bodily harm, and common assault of her younger sister, Emma Greville, at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on November 1 2020.

At an earlier hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court, prosecutor Andrea Griffiths said the assault charge was an alleged domestic assault against Ms Greville involving a 'deliberate headbutt' aggravated by the fact Giggs was 'in drink'.

He was charged with offences in April and he issued a statement at the time, saying: 'I have full respect for the due process of law and understand the seriousness of the allegations. I will plead not guilty in court and look forward to clearing my name.'

Giggs has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The former Manchester United midfielder is on bail on the conditions that he must not contact Kate or Emma Greville or go to any address where they are.

He is on leave from his position as manager of Wales who he won 64 caps for as a player.

In his time at Old Trafford, the club won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, four FA Cups and three League Cups.

He is also a co-owner of League Two side Salford City.

Ryan Giggs STEPS DOWN as Wales boss while awaiting trial for assaulting his ex-girlfriend with former Man United winger keen to avoid 'destabilising or jeopardising' his country's preparation for their first World Cup appearance since 1958

* Ryan Giggs does not want his situation to act as distraction for the World Cup
* Giggs announced his decision to step down as manager of Wales on Monday
* He remains determined to clear his name and strenuously denies the charges

Ryan Giggs has stepped down as Wales manager.

The Manchester United legend – who temporarily left the role after being charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend – announced his decision on Monday evening, which was revealed by Mail+.

Talks with FAW officials have been ongoing, with Giggs finalising the move following the country's qualification for the World Cup under interim boss Rob Page earlier this month.

The 48-year-old – who strenuously denies the charges and who initially stepped down following the allegations in November 2020 - has decided to bring closure to the situation following the delay of his court case.

Giggs does not want his situation to act as a distraction as his country prepares for its first appearance in a World Cup finals since 1958.

He remains determined to clear his name, but given proceedings are now unlikely to take place until August, he feels that now is the time for clarification.

In a statement released on Monday, Giggs said: 'After much consideration, I am standing down from my position as manager of the Wales men’s national team with immediate effect.

'It has been an honour and a privilege to manage my country, but it is only right that the Wales FA, the coaching staff and the players prepare for the tournament with certainty, clarification and without speculation around the position of their head coach.

'As has been well publicised, I have pleaded not guilty to the criminal accusations being heard at Manchester Crown Court.

Giggs does not want his situation to act as a distraction as his country prepares for its first appearance in a World Cup finals since 1958

'Whilst I am confident in our judicial process, I had hoped that the case would have been heard earlier to enable me to resume my managerial responsibilities.

'Through nobody’s fault the case has been delayed.

'I do not want the country’s preparations for the World Cup to be affected, destabilised or jeopardised in any way by the continued interest around this case.

'I have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed some unforgettable moments during my three years in charge of the national team.

'I am proud of my record and will cherish those special times forever.

'It has been a pleasure to work with such well-established, senior professionals, and it has given me immense pride to watch so many young players progress into the national squad and flourish in the proud red colours of our country.

'I am touched and grateful to our passionate supporters for following us all over the world.

'To see nearly 3,000 of our loyal, travelling fans in Baku for the European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan made me appreciate the sacrifices people make to watch our nation play.

'I am sad that we cannot continue this journey together because I believe that this extraordinary group will make the country proud at our first World Cup since 1958.

'I would like to thank the chief executive Noel Mooney, his predecessor Jonathan Ford, the board of the FAW, plus the many people behind the scenes who work tirelessly to help our national team and for the support they have given me during this difficult time in my personal life.

'It is my intention to resume my managerial career at a later date and I look forward to watching our national team alongside you in the stands.

'Finally, I would like to wish the players, the staff and the supporters at the FAW every success at the World Cup and in the future. Thank you and best wishes. Ryan'

Giggs's trial was adjourned for close to seven months to August 8 following a backlog of cases at Manchester Crown Court.

He is accused of causing his ex actual bodily harm at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, in November 2020 and using coercive behaviour towards her. He has also been accused of assaulting his ex's sister. Giggs denies all the allegations.

Following qualification Page revealed his contract with Wales had been extended but Giggs's pending move will remove any confusion over the situation.

The trial of Ryan Giggs could be delayed again - after an asbestos scare at Manchester Crown Court.

Former Manchester United player Giggs, 48, was due at the city centre building on Monday to face allegations of controlling behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on his ex-partner and assault by beating of her sister - accusations he denies.

But the ex-Wales manager, who stepped down from his post earlier this summer, may now find the case put back for a second time.

Ryan Giggs' trial could be delayed again due to an asbestos scare at Manchester Crown Court. Ex-Wales boss Giggs was due at the city centre building on Monday to face assault allegations. A potential site of the carcinogen was discovered in a basement of Manchester Crown Court

On Friday, a potential site of the carcinogen was discovered in a basement of the court, which was built in the 1960s.

It has subsequently been closed for a fortnight but will only be re-opened when it has been declared safe.

Some urgent cases have been transferred to the city's other crown court at Minshull Street, with others switched to Bolton. Giggs's case has been listed for a 'mention' at Minshull Street on Thursday. It may be put back, or moved to another court.

The case was originally due to be heard in January - but a lack of available courtrooms at the venue saw it pushed back seven months.

Some urgent cases have been transferred to the city's other crown court at Minshull Street, with others switched to Bolton.

It was announced on Wednesday that the first day of Giggs' case would be shifted to another court in the city, before resuming at the original planned venue.

Giggs, 48, has pleaded not guilty to the controlling behaviour of his ex-partner, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating of her sister.

Following the allegations, he stepped down from his role as Wales manager earlier this year.

The former Manchester United star and Wales manager appeared at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday where he denies claims he coercively controlled and attacked his ex, Kate Greville, and assaulted her sister, Emma.

At the start of the first day of a two-week case a jury of seven women and five men were read a list of people who may be referenced during the trial and asked if they had any personal relationships with those on it.

The group included Giggs's United manager Ferguson, ex-team-mate, fellow Class of '92 member and Salford City co-owner Neville and the United's former chief executive Gill.

Salford chairman Karen Baird was also on the list, along with Giggs's ex-wife Stacey.

None of the jury raised any concerns.

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs appeared at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court facing claims of coercive behaviour. Sir Alex Ferguson, Gary Neville and David Gill could be referenced during the trial, the jury was told. Ryan Giggs, 48, has pleaded not guilty to the controlling behaviour of his ex-partner

Peter Wright QC, prosecuting, told the jury Gigs - who sat in a glass-enclosed dock - was guilty of a 'litany of abuse, physical and psychological, of a woman he professed to love'.

He added that the former winger, who stepped down as Wales manager earlier this year, had headbutted Greville during a row when they had grappled on the floor at the house they shared and elbowed her sister in the jaw when she tried to intervene.

Representing Giggs, Chris Daw QC said his client 'did not control or coerce at all'. 'This is not about making excuses.,' he said, before asking the jury to use 'common sense' when reaching a verdict.
