8 October 2013 - Sunderland name Poyet as new head coach

Bottom-of-the-table Sunderland appointed Gus Poyet as their new head coach in a bid to reverse their fortunes in the Barclays Premier League.

Poyet, who starred for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur as a Barclays Premier League player, replaced Paolo Di Canio at the Stadium of Light after leading Brighton & Hove Albion to the Championship play-off semi-finals the previous season.

On Poyet’s arrival, the Black Cats were 20th with one point from their first seven matches and he said: “I look forward to proving my ability to the fans – I want them to believe because we need to stick together.

“It’s a huge challenge but one I am excited about and I am grateful for the opportunity to manage in the Barclays Premier League.”

Poyet brought along his Brighton backroom team of Mauricio Taricco and Charlie Oatway, who helped him steer the Seagulls to promotion from League One in 2011, and agreed a two-year deal.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short said: “We analysed a wide range of candidates and believe that Gus’s track record, experience, commitment and passion make him the right man to take us forward.”

Poyet’s first match in charge was a 4-0 defeat to Swansea, but a Capital One Cup win over Southampton was followed by a shock win against Manchester City to lift Sunderland off the bottom of the league table.

One more victory in the next nine matches left the Black Cats four points adrift of safety on New Year’s Day.

In mid-April and with five matches to play, giving them a match in hand on the three teams above them, Sunderland were six points behind 17th-placed Norwich City and their seven-year stay in the Barclays Premier League was hanging in the balance.

But an incredible sequence of four consecutive victories, including away triumphs at Chelsea and Manchester United, lifted them to safety with one match to spare to complete a great escape from relegation.

After the victory over West Bromwich Albion which confirmed Sunderland’s survival, Poyet said: “I will start believing in miracles. It’s been difficult and I don’t know if you will see something similar ever – it’s one of the best days of my life.”

The Black Cats became only the second club, after West Brom in 2005, to avoid the drop having been bottom of the Barclays Premier League table on Christmas Day. They also reached the Capital One Cup final, which they lost to Manchester City, in the 2013/14 campaign.

Looking back at Barclays Premier League history, we recall Everton signing the Ivorian striker

9 October 1998 -
Everton snap up striker Bakayoko

Everton made striker Ibrahima Bakayoko the Ivory Coast's first Barclays Premier League player when they signed him from Montpellier.

Bakayoko had a record of scoring nearly one goal every three matches during his two years with the French club, and Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure have been a host of successful Ivorian BPL stars since the striker's arrival on Merseyside.

The striker failed to make a major impact at Goodison Park and at the end of the season returned to France to join Marseille.

Bakayoko started 17 Barclays Premier League matches for the Toffees and appeared as a substitute on six occasions.

The highlight of his Everton career was undoubtedly when he scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers in the middle of March.

It was Bakayoko's first start since early February and he had not scored in the league since the end of December.

But, after the Toffees had fallen behind after only 94 seconds at Ewood Park, he equalised with a close-range header at a 15th minute corner by Don Hutchison, which was flicked on by David Weir.

Bakayoko was denied a second by Rovers goalkeeper John Filan but he was not to be denied in the 65th minute when he fired home following a through ball from Hutchison, although he later missed the chance of a hat-trick.

They were the last goals the striker scored for Everton before leaving in the close season.

He spent four years with Marseille before moving on to another French club Istres and then to sides in Italy and Greece.

Looking back at BPL history, we recall the former Leeds manager succeeding Peter Reid

10 October 2002 - Wilkinson named as new Sunderland manager

Howard Wilkinson was named as Sunderland's new manager just two days after the departure of predecessor Peter Reid.

Wilkinson left his role as England technical director to take the job and appointed Steve Cotterill as his assistant.

He had previously been in charge at Leeds United, winning the First Division title in 1991/92, the last season before the start of the Barclays Premier League.

The Black Cats were struggling in 17th place in the table when Wilkinson took charge and he said: "I relish the challenge ahead here and I am looking forward to working closely with Steve to develop what is on paper already a strong squad."

"We will prepare the players in a way that's as modern and forward-thinking as anywhere in the world, but that alone is not the answer. We have to make sure that physically they are well-prepared and tactically well-prepared and also mentally well-prepared."

Wilkinson had to wait until his fourth BPL match for his first win in the competition with the Black Cats but results did not pick up as he had hoped.

He led the side to two victories in 20 league matches before he and Cotterill were relieved of their jobs in the middle of March.

The season ended with 15 consecutive Barclays Premier League defeats for the Black Cats, with the last nine taking place after Wilkinson's departure, and Sunderland's points total of 19 was the third worst in BPL history as they got relegated.

Mick McCarthy took charge for the closing weeks of the season and Wilkinson went on to manage Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua.

He is currently the chairman of the League Managers' Association.

Looking back at Barclays Premier League history, we recall the defender joining Wimbledon

11 October 1999 - Wimbledon bring Hreidarsson back to Selhurst Park

Wimbledon signed Hermann Hreidarsson from London neighbours Brentford, bringing the Iceland defender back to both the Barclays Premier League and Selhurst Park.

Hreidarsson, who played at left-back or centre-half, had moved to the Bees 13 months previously from Selhurst Park's landlords Crystal Palace, who were relegated in the defender's first Barclays Premier League campaign.

After his move to the Dons,*Hreidarsson established himself as a regular in Wimbledon's side, amassing 24 BPL appearances in the 1999/00 campaign, but the Dons were consigned to the drop in what proved to be their last top-flight season.

Hreidarsson stayed in the BPL by moving to Ipswich Town in August 2000 after the Tractor Boys had been promoted from the Championship, and he played 36 times as they earned an unlikely fifth place and qualification for the UEFA Cup.

They struggled to replicate their remarkable exploits the following campaign and went down, the third of five BPL relegations Hreidarsson suffered.

His longest stint in the top flight came at his next club, Charlton Athletic. The defender amassed 132 Barclays Premier League appearances during four seasons from 2003 to 2007.

Despite relegation in May 2007, the defender remained in the BPL when he joined Portsmouth and was a regular as the south coast club won the 2008 FA Cup final and an eighth-place finish that season.

Hreidarsson moved to League One side Coventry City in 2012 with Portsmouth in the Championship and the defender, who won 89 caps for Iceland, then returned to his homeland to play for Fylkir.

Looking back at Barclays Premier League history, we recall Wenger’s first match as Arsenal manager

12 October 1996 - Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Arsenal

Ian Wright scored twice to give Arsene Wenger victory in his first match as manager of Arsenal.

The Frenchman was appointed at the start of the month, following managerial spells with AS Monaco and Grampus Eight Nagoya, but had been forced to wait for his first fixture in charge because of the international break.

The result left Arsenal, who won five of their first eight matches under the management of Stewart Houston and then Pat Rice, in second place only a point behind Barclays Premier League leaders Newcastle United.

Wright struck near the beginning of each half to take his goal tally for the season to eight and hand bottom-club Blackburn their sixth defeat.

Wenger said he was pleased with a display of "solidarity, good organisation and professionalism" and speaking about Wright, he added: "Ian is not a normal 32-year-old. He is so fit and strong and wants so much to succeed.

"When you consider that Ian did not start his career until he was 23, to have scored so many goals must make him world class. Can you imagine what he might have achieved if he had started with a good club at 16 or 17?"

Arsenal only needed only three minutes to take the lead. Wright started the move deep in his own half by finding left-back Nigel Winterburn and then ran the length of the pitch to curl the ball home after John Hartson had headed down the full-back's cross.

Blackburn had three good chances to level the match, with two falling to Tim Sherwood, but could not find the target.

The Gunners doubled their advantage in the 51st minute when Patrick Vieira played a one-two with Hartson and fed Wright, who lifted it over the onrushing Tim Flowers.

Wenger has gone on to become Arsenal's longest-serving manager and has won more trophies for the club than any of his predecessors.

Under his leadership the Gunners have won two Barclays Premier League and FA Cup doubles, another league crown after going through the 2003/04 campaign unbeaten and three more FA Cups.

The 64-year-old, who has been named Barclays Manager of the Season three times, has also led the Gunners to qualification for the UEFA Champions League in 17 consecutive seasons.

Looking back at Barclays Premier League history, we recall Newcastle’s emphatic away win

13 October 2001 - Bolton Wanderers 0-4 Newcastle United

Newcastle United eased to a 4-0 victory over a Bolton Wanderers side who were forced to put midfielder Bo Hansen in goal midway through the second half.

With the score at 1-0, regular goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

Second choice Steve Banks had been injured in training the previous Monday and with no substitute keeper among Wanderers' substitutes, Hansen was forced to take his place between the posts.

His first act was to pick the ball out of the net after Laurent Robert scored direct from the free-kick awarded for Jaaskelainen's offence.

Newcastle, who jumped up to fourth in the Barclays Premier League table with their victory, took a 41st-minute lead through Nolberto Solano, who finished off a header from Alan Shearer after a cross by Robert.

The goal confirmed the Magpies' dominance as Jaaskelainen had already twice denied Craig Bellamy before they went ahead.

Ricardo Gardner missed a great chance to equalise in the 56th minute and five minutes later Jaaskelainen was shown the red card for handling Robert's pass to Shearer.

It was Shearer who made the match safe by heading in Robert's cross to make it 3-0 in the 71st minute with his third goal of the season.

Bellamy then wrapped up the match after being set up by Shearer.

The Magpies went on to finish fourth in the table and qualify for the following season's UEFA Champions league while Bolton avoiding relegation by four points in 16th position.

Quote:
13 October 1993 - Koeman Kicks England Out Of The World Cup

On 13 October 1993, the Netherlands defeated England 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier played before a crowd of approximately 48,000 at Rotterdam's de Kuip Stadion. The defeat meant that England no longer controlled its own destiny with regard to qualification and the side ultimately missed the 1994 World Cup.

Going into the match, England were in second place of UEFA Group 2 on 10 points, three points behind group leaders Norway and one point ahead of the third-place Netherlands. A win would have secured them in second place and automatically qualified them for the World Cup, while a draw would have kept them ahead of the Dutch side.

After a scoreless second half, England captain David Platt was clear through to the goal in the 57th minute and appeared ready to score when his shirt was grabbed by the last man, Dutch captain Ronald Koeman. Although the foul happened a yard inside the box, the referee ignored England's clamor for a penalty and awarded a free kick on the 18-yard line. The Dutch wall safely charged down the kick, taken by defender Tony Dorigo.

Koeman then added to England's misery by scoring from a free kick in the 61st minute. His first attempt was blocked, but the referee ordered it to be retaken, claiming that midfielder Paul Ince had left the wall too early. Koeman took advantage of the second chance, chipping the ball into the top of the net past keeper David Seaman.

It only got worse for England, as Dutch striker Dennis Bergkamp appeared to handle the ball before shooting it past Seaman to extend the lead in the 68th minute.

After the loss, England were two points behind the Netherlands for second place and needed a win against San Marino in the last match, combined with a Dutch loss or draw against Poland. England battered San Marino to a 1-7 win, but the Dutch killed off England's World Cup hopes by defeating Poland 1-3.
