7 Players Who Will Become Superstars by the Time World Cup 2014 Arrives

The FIFA World Cup is arguably the biggest sporting event in the world, so why not start looking forward to the 2014 World Cup now?

Spain won its first World Cup last summer with a squad primarily in its prime, but its Under-21 side and even its bench are just as loaded.

Brazil is starting from scratch after two disappointing World Cups and has plenty of young stars who will be hoping to win the title at home, but Uruguay is also working its way back in the world order, hoping to finish 2014 the way the last World Cup in Brazil ended.

Plenty of Europe's top nations also have plenty of young starlets who are just getting their feet wet.

Let's take a look (in no particular order) at some of those players who in three years will be the superstars of the game.

7. Gervinho

Didier Drogba is one of the best African footballers of all time, but at age 33, his days are certainly numbered at the top.

His compatriot Gervinho is primed to take his place though. At 24, the Ivorian is Arsenal's newest striker and can become a star in North London in the next few years.

After lighting up the French Ligue in two seasons with Lille, Arsene Wenger made him the Gunners' first big transfer signing in the last few years, and playing at Arsenal should make him even better in the prime of his career.

The Gunners will be looking at him for plenty of goals, and he should get ample opportunity with the support of Arsenal's midfield.

6. Thomas Muller

Thomas Muller was just one of the young surprises who shone with Germany last summer, and at 21, the Bayern Munich striker can become a sensation leading up to the 2014 World Cup.

He was the Best Young Player and Golden Boot winner of the 2010 World Cup, and his versatile attacking skills will only get better in the next three years.

He's got a knack for being in the right place to score goals and will likely be leading the German line after the 2012 European Championships, if not during.

Muller is already at one of Europe's top clubs and has big-game experience, and he can only go up from here.

5. Juan Mata

Spain is so stacked that Juan Mata could barely get on the field last summer in South Africa.

The Valencia star is one of the hottest wingers on the market this summer, but the 23-year-old will likely stay with Los Che for at least one more year.

Mata has great pace, fantastic crossing and scoring ability and is a very clever player.

Next summer's European Championships can be Mata's introduction to world football, and after that, there's no stopping him.

4. Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez is probably the biggest villain in world football these days, but his performances for Ajax, Liverpool and Uruguay in the last year and in the next three will make him a superstar.

He has fantastic skills and is great at set pieces. He can score goals from just about anywhere, and his fancy footwork in the future should help to erase people's memories of his handball against Ghana.

Suarez led Uruguay to its 15th Copa America title and was named Player of the Tournament in the process, and he is certainly well on his way to becoming a superstar.

3. Jack Wilshere

The English midfield has been a problem area the past several years, but Three Lions fans shouldn't have to worry about Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard for much longer.

Jack Wilshere will be taking over from here.

The young Arsenal midfielder broke onto the scene last season, earning his first international call-up last August.

For the Gunners, he dominated the midfield and dazzled the footballing world with his passing ability, his most impressive display coming in the 2-1 win over Barcelona of all opponents.

The 19-year-old (seriously) was the PFA Young Player of the Year last season and has plenty of his best years ahead of him.

England has a great group of youngsters, and with Joe Hart in goal, Wilshere in the middle and Andy Carroll up front, things are looking bright.

2. Javier Hernandez

There was no bigger breakout star in world football last season than Manchester United's Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez.

The 23-year-old Mexican scored 20 goals in his first season in England, including the one that essentially brought United its 19th league title against Chelsea and the ones that sent the Red Devils past Marseille and through to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Mexico has plenty of young stars who can take the team far in 2014, but at Manchester United, Chicharito has the biggest stage on which to display his skills.

1. Neymar

Brazil will be hosting the 2014 World Cup (if they can get it together that is), and A Selecao will be looking to win big.

That starts with Neymar up top.

The 19-year-old Santos star puts on a show whenever he's on the pitch and has drawn comparisons to Pele and plenty of attention from Europe's top clubs.

He may be spending one more season in Brazil, but by next summer, he will be plying his trade for Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea or another top club, and it will only enhance his play.

Given he'll be in front of of his home crowd in three years, Neymar will shine brighter than any other superstar in the 2014 World Cup.

So, who do you think will be a football superstar three years from now?

Piala Dunia 2014 Kick Off 12 Juni
Doni Wahyudi - detiksport

The pot allocations for the Preliminary Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ were announced today at a media conference involving FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and FIFA Secretary-General Jerome Valcke at the Marina da Gloria, Rio de Janeiro, the location for Saturday’s event.

The pot allocations are based on July’s FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking which was announced today at 10.00 CET (N.B. The March Ranking positions were used for the CONCACAF allocations). However, the Asian Zone allocations will only be known following Thursday’s qualifying matches.

The Preliminary Draw begins at 15.00 local time (20.00 CET) on Saturday, with the FIFA Secretary-General acting as the Master of Ceremonies.

The Preliminary Draw in quotes

“Massive fan of all three countries and I respect them a lot, [it’s] going to be tough. Football in Asia is growing rapidly.” Tim Cahill, Australia midfielder

“Without any doubt, Germany is the top candidate for the No1 spot. On paper, Sweden and Ireland should be considered ahead of us. But our task is doable.” Dietmar Constantini, Austria coach

“It will be so wonderful for our people to be able to welcome two of the biggest giants of the football world - the current champions, Spain, and the champions of 1998, France.” Bernd Stange, Belarus coach

“It’s a very well balanced group and there’s no doubt that it will very difficult. But we have to believe in our chances.” Georges Leekens, Belgium coach

“We respect every opponent in our group and will take the challenge. I have seen much easier groups in Europe today. But one thing is clear: Italy are the favourites.” Lothar Matthaus, Bulgaria coach

“The European groups are quite tight and although what catches the eye is France and Spain drawn together, I believe that Italy’s group is even closer; a more even one.” Mano Menezes, Brazil coach

"I think it's a decent draw. The main thing is you have to take care of business at home and if you get results (on the road), you should be okay." Stephen Hart, Canada coach

“The draw is not too bad for us - at least it is better than what Japan have received! All four teams, however, are close rivals and the competition will be ferocious.” Li Xiaopeng, former China PR midfielder

“Ukraine and Montenegro are going to be tough. If we can beat Montenegro in our EURO group, that would be important for the confidence of the team.” Fabio Capello, England coach

“It's to be expected that we drew a big fish as we were not seeded. It's a difficult group, but I hope anyway the best two will go through.” Laurent Blanc, France coach

“We are satisfied. It's not an easy group, but we are happy that we do not have to face France. Of course, we are the favourites, but we still have to go into each match concentrated and focused.” Oliver Bierhoff, Germany team manager

“It’s a good group for us, Jordan can reach the final round for the first time in its history.” Adnan Hamad, Jordan coach

“It’s always difficult for us, whatever our group is. But this is a very interesting draw and to finish lower than fourth would be a disappointment.” Paul Phillip, Luxemburg Football Federation President

“It’s a fair group for us because we will fight for the second position behind England, who are clearly favourites.” Zlatko Kranjcar, Montenegro coach

“This is a very tough group, but we are ready for the challenge. Good luck to all the Arab and Gulf teams.” Ali Al Habsi, Oman goalkeeper

“It is a difficult section with three genuine football nations in Turkey, Hungary and Romania. Those will be our main rivals, with Turkey being the biggest threat.” Bert van Marwijk, Netherlands coach

“It looks a reasonably tough group, but it could have been worse. There is a fair bit of travelling but you have to deal with that.” Nigel Worthington, Northern Ireland coach

“We are not favourites; Russia has a lot of individual talent and Israel has shown it can be a big danger for any big team.” Paulo Bento, Portugal coach

“It is a tough task, so we will make sure to prepare properly. We will spend some time in Qatar and then we will have a ten-day stint in Turkey.” Milovan Rajevac, Qatar coach

“I don’t have any special feeling today, it will not be easy for sure but I can’t be happy or unhappy. Anything is possible.” Dick Advocaat, Russia coach

“In Serbia and Croatia we have drawn two very accomplished teams and all of these games will provide a very tough challenge for my squad.” Craig Levein, Scotland coach

“I remember Scotland as a team with very good qualities in the past. Belgium will be very difficult too, although I think Croatia – as the top-seeded team – must start as favourites.” Vladimir Petrovic, Serbia coach

“I can't see a clear favourite. We can beat anybody, we have proven that in the past.” Matjaz Kek, Slovenia coach

“For sure it’s kind of a good group for us. I’m sure the other teams are not happy to have us in the group. It will be hard, though.” Pitso Mosimane, South Africa coach

“If you concentrate too much on France, you can fail against any other opponent, and complicate your qualification in the same way.” Vicente del Bosque, Spain coach

“Republic of Ireland will be tough, I expect a big fight with them, but there is no doubt that Germany are the favourites.” Erik Hamren, Sweden coach

“I’m very confident. Our team is in a renovation process, in a year will have more experience and we could be able to fight the Dutch for first place in the group.” Guus Hiddink, Turkey coach

“Japan are undisputedly the strongest team in this group but every team has a chance. The fixtures look tight and all six games will be played in six months, so there’s no room for error.” Vadim Abramov, Uzbekistan coach

“It's one of those groups when you look at it that everyone can beat anyone. It's a really tough group, but it could have been worse.” Gary Speed, Wales coach

Default World Cup 2014: Brazil Falling Behind?

Brazil in mood for World Cup hurry up

No doubt about the highlight of last week's friendly international 0-0 draw between Argentina and Brazil - the moment in the second half when Brazil striker Leandro Damiao produced his speciality 'lambreta' dribble.

Cutting in from the right he ran over the ball, and then flicked it with his right foot against his left, in such a way that it did not just loop over his bewildered marker, but also fell on an ideal trajectory for him to continue his run and meet it with a lobbed volley, probably an intended cross, that looped off the far post.

It is a remarkable skill - all the more so coming from a big centre forward more known for power than finesse who was playing park football just a few years ago and now plays for Internacional.

Damiao, 22, is enjoying a dream year. He is not yet the finished article - his back-to-goal game has plenty of room for improvement. But producing such a moment of skill in just his fourth Brazil appearance did wonders for his dream of leading Brazil's attack in the 2014 Fifa World Cup. His 'lambreta' dribble is the essence of South American football - in a tight spot, with few available options, a player improvises a solution.

There are now fewer than 1,000 days to go until the show kicks off in 2014. The milestone was celebrated last week, with a flood of articles in the Brazilian media casting comment on the state of readiness. The chances are that getting the show on the road will require some other moments of improvisation, less welcome than the one supplied by Damiao.

Construction work is at an earlier than ideal stage in a couple of stadiums, but this is not seen as a major cause for concern. Airport capacity is a worry, but, as is the case with stadiums, money will be thrown at the problem in the next three years.

More alarming is the area of urban transport infra-structure. "The worry is very big," said Marcos Tulio de Melo, president of Confea, an organisation representing architects and engineers. "The mobility works are not as advanced as the stadiums. A lot of projects have not even been presented. We should have the works in progress, but we lack the maturity to plan."

The experience from South Africa in 2010 seems to show that strictly in the staging of a World Cup, the urban mobility aspect is not so important. For such a special event fans are keen to arrive at the stadium hours ahead of kick-off in order to be part of the atmosphere.

So, caught in a race against time to be ready for 2014, there is an obvious temptation to scale back or quietly forget some of the planned improvements in urban mobility. There is scope to improvise. "The World Cup will happen," says Marcos Tulio de Melo, "but in some places it will be necessary to have holidays or suspend lessons in schools."

But if transport improvements are not as important as stadiums in staging the World Cup, the reverse is clearly true in terms of the potential benefits to society. Brazil's cities grew rapidly over the last century, and urban transport failed to keep pace. They are full of people standing in overcrowded buses for two hours or more both to and from work every day.

Inside the 1,000-day mark, it seems clear that the 2014 World Cup will not do as much as it could to improve this state of affairs. This has been on the cards ever since the absurd delay in naming the host cities. Brazil was given the World Cup in October 2007 - but this merely confirmed a decision than had effectively been announced in March 2003.

Brazil, then, should have had most of its planning in place four years ago. But it had not even chosen its cities. The controversial Ricardo Teixeira is president both of the CBF, Brazil's FA, and of the Local Organising Committee, an unusual accumulation of power. But he did not want to take the risk of offending his power base by excluding cities from the party and so in another unusual step, the decision was passed to Fifa, and more time was wasted.

The Brazilian government must surely share some of the blame for this. Without their support the country would not have been awarded the World Cup, and the amount of public money being spent in the endeavour makes it too important to be left to the likes of Teixeira.

Former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has a wonderful poverty-to-power biography, and an assured place in the history of his country. But his role in the 2014 World Cup may not go down as his finest hour.

A football fanatic, before he took office Lula was critical of Teixeira. Once in power, wanting to play the role of global statesman, he soon saw the advantages of getting close to the CBF boss. The national team could be a powerful instrument of foreign policy. Brazil sent a peace keeping force to Haiti, and Teixeira agreed to take the team, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and all, to the Caribbean country for a friendly in 2004. During this period Lula's friendly relations with Teixeira meant that not enough pressure was placed on the CBF boss to speed up the planning for 2014.

Dilma Rousseff, Lula's hand-picked successor as president, is made of sterner stuff. It seems very clear that she has little time for Teixeira. In her mind the CBF boss may well represent the oligarchy, bloated and inept, that she has been fighting against for decades.

Had she been in power earlier it is tempting to believe that things would have been different - not only relations with Teixeira but also in terms of standing up to Fifa over the demands made on host countries.

That will remain one of history's countless 'what ifs?' Because with fewer than 1,000 days to go the priority is getting the show on the road - including the odd piece of improvisation which, hopefully, will work as well as the dribble unleashed last week by Leandro Damiao.
