LOCAL CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM TICKETING INITIATIVE

Following the game against Colchester United, 30,000 tickets will have been distributed to local children through a Manchester United community ticketing initiative this season.

Groups of children, under the age of 16, have been able to attend matches at Old Trafford free of charge, as part of the club’s drive to make live football more accessible for young people

The initiative has been in place for Manchester United’s matches against Rochdale and Colchester United in the Carabao Cup, and Astana, Partizan Belgrade and AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League. It follows similar ticket distribution schemes which have been run in recent seasons in conjunction with Manchester United Foundation.

Schools, local football teams and other youth organisations have been among the hundreds of groups that have successfully applied for free tickets to see the Reds in action this season.

This group offer sits alongside other ticketing initiatives, such as the stadium-wide £10 tickets for Under 16s; 50 per cent discount for 16-17 year olds; 25 per cent discount for 18-20 year olds; and ticket discounts for Our Pass youth travel card holders across Greater Manchester.

Collette Roche, chief operating officer, said: “We are committed to helping younger fans watch live, affordable football. This is part of our efforts to help create a consistently vibrant atmosphere at Old Trafford and encourage our next generation of match-goers.

“While the stadium is sold out for the vast majority of games we feel that it is important to seize these rare opportunities to widen access and give back to our local community.

“The feedback that we have received on this grassroots ticketing promotion has been terrific. It’s put a smile on a lot of kids’ faces, many of whom will have visited Old Trafford for the first time.

“We welcome each and every one of them to the Manchester United family.”

Manchester United ditch plans for a training camp in Doha amid fears over players' safety following rising tensions between the US and Iran

* Manchester United hoped to take the first team to Qatar over the winter break
* But the plans have been scrapped amid rising tensions between the US and Iran
* A plane was downed in Tehran last week and there are concerns for player safety
* United will instead pick an alternative venue in Europe during the 16-day break

Manchester United have scrapped plans for a training camp in Doha in next month's winter break over fears for their players' safety in the Middle East.

United were due to train in Qatar but rising tension between Iran and the US — that led to the downing of a passenger plane over Tehran last week — forced the club to abandon that amid security concerns, with the Foreign Office warning of an increased threat in the region.

The US national team also cancelled a training camp in Qatar scheduled for this month.

United will choose an alternative venue in Europe during their 16-day break and give the players time for a short holiday, although the club will not place any restrictions on where they can go.

'We were looking at the Middle East but that's definitely not going to happen,' said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

'If there is one thing that worries me, it's not on the football pitch. There are other things that will worry me more than football.

'I'm going to give them a few days off. I don't know where they will all scatter around but we will stay in Europe.'

United used the Aspire Academy facilities in Doha under Sir Alex Ferguson, while Solskjaer took his players to the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex in Dubai a year ago.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says there is no chance of United's training camp being held in Qatar. The Manchester United team traveled to Dubai for a warm weather training camp last year. The team will play at another venue in Europe amid fears for players' safety in the Middle East

The Norwegian acknowledged the need for the Premier League's first winter break amid a 'relentless' run of 18 games in 63 days that continues with Wednesday night's FA Cup third-round replay at home to Wolves.

'This mid-season break will be very important for everyone to get some vitamin D and get ready for the last three months,' said Solskjaer, who confirmed that injured midfielders Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay will not be available before United's Premier League game at Chelsea on February 17.

'We have five or six games until then and we are just going to stick at it and hang in there. I know we won't see Scott or Paul before the winter break, but Luke Shaw is not too far away.'

Eric Bailly is also close to playing for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury in pre-season against Tottenham in Shanghai. United will wait to see how the Ivorian defender responds to Tuesday's outing for the reserves but Bailly may make the bench for Sunday's trip to Liverpool.

Ahead of the Wolves replay, Solskjaer was asked if United are in danger of becoming a cup team as they struggle to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the title again.

'Supporters and the club alike aren't happy with not challenging for the top position in the league,' he replied.

'That is where we feel we should be and many of today's supporters have lived that period where we won it consistently. It might be that we start with winning a cup and then these players will get that taste. But that is not what we want to be. We want to be challenging for the league and the Champions League.'

With United in talks to sign Sporting Lisbon's £60million-rated midfielder Bruno Fernandes, Solskjaer also brushed off concerns raised by the latest Deloitte Football Money League that their revenues could soon drop below those of Liverpool and City.

'I know we've got the resources,' he said. 'We've got the backing if we need to go into the transfer market. We are still up there, so still in a good place.'

Manchester United weigh up Marbella for training camp after ditching Doha plans over security fears amid tensions between Iran and the West following missile strikes and protests after assassination of Qasem Soleimani

* Manchester United were due in Qatar in February for a warm-weather camp
* However, security concerns due to rising Middle East tensions scuppered plans
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his men could now head to Marbella in Spain instead
* Tensions are high in the Middle East following assassination of Qasem Soleimani

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of holding a warm-weather training camp in Marbella after cancelling plans to train in Qatar.

The club have scrapped a trip to Doha next month due to security concerns amid unrest in the Middle East.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to give his players a week off during the winter break from February 2, but wants to bring them back together for intensive training prior to the season resuming on February 17.

The Spanish resort of Marbella has been discussed as an alternative for a training camp, although there are no guarantees it will have warm weather next month.

Liverpool used Marbella Football Centre last May in their build-up to the Champions League final against Tottenham.

Solskjaer believes the camp will provide valuable bonding time for his players as well as respite following a run of 18 games in 63 days stretching back to the start of December.

The busy schedule resumes after the Premier League’s first ever winter break, as United face three games in a week with two league fixtures against Chelsea and Watford and the first leg of a Europa League knockout tie against Club Bruges in Belgium.

Manchester United could be heading out to Marbella for a warm weather training camp. United have axed a trip to Qatar due to rising tension following the death of Wasem Soleimani. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was due to take his side to Qatar, but the trip has now been cancelled

Solskjaer hopes to have Bruno Fernandes in his squad by then as talks continue with Sporting Lisbon over a January move for the £60million-rated Portugal midfielder. United are offering £50m plus £10m in add-ons.

Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are also hoping to be back from injury by the time the squad go away for their training camp.

Pogba has undergone surgery in Amsterdam to correct an ankle problem that has hindered him since August, and was back at United’s Carrington training base this week wearing a protective boot.

McTominay has missed the last six games after damaging knee ligaments against Newcastle on Boxing Day, but is making progress in his recovery.

Manchester United hit with FA charge over players surrounding referee Craig Pawson after he allowed Roberto Firmino's goal to stand despite Virgil van Dijk's foul in Liverpool game

* Manchester United lost Sunday evening's game against Liverpool 2-0
* Liverpool had a second goal disallowed but referee Craig Pawson initially gave it
* VAR intervened and overturned Pawson's on-pitch decision over the goal
* United have now been hit with an FA charge for how their players reacted

Manchester United have been charged with failing to ensure their players 'conducted themselves in an orderly fashion' during Sunday's Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield.

The incident followed Roberto Firmino's disallowed goal, when referee Craig Pawson initially did not give a free-kick for what appeared to be a foul by Virgil van Dijk on David de Gea.

The United players surrounded the referee to complain about the decision. It was eventually overturned with the intervention of VAR.

The incident followed Roberto Firmino's disallowed goal which Craig Pawson initially allowed. Fred, Luke Shaw and David De Gea surround the referee during the game at Anfield

Pawson dished out a yellow card to De Gea for his reaction to the decision prior to the goal being disallowed.

Now United, who ended up losing the game 2-0 courtesy of goals from Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, have been hit with the charge by the Football Association.

Former United defender Gary Neville admitted he was surprised by the decision to disallow the goal.

Neville told Sky Sports: 'They think it's a foul by Virgil van Dijk on David de Gea but my initial reaction was it absolutely wasn't. It looked like he just dropped it.

Harry Maguire remonstrates with referee Pawson as he expresses his disbelief at the goal

'We will see on VAR and it will come down to whether Van Dijk has raised his arm or not.

'I don't think that's a foul. Van Dijk has basically dropped his arms and jumped for the ball but we shall see. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is furious, David de Gea is furious.

'We've seen it before, David, you've got to be stronger when challenged. I just think he drops it.

'I think it's soft. If it was against me at the other end, I wouldn't expect a foul.'

Manchester United ready to introduce safe standing at Old Trafford as they request permission to install rail seating before the end of the season

* Manchester United are planning to implement safe standing at Old Trafford
* United have approached their local authority to ask for the green light
* They want to bring in 1,500 rail seats in the stadium's North East Quadrant

Manchester United hope to introduce safe standing at Old Trafford. Sportsmail can reveal that the club have requested permission to install rail seating which could be in place later this season.

United have approached their local authority to ask for the green light to bring in 1,500 rail seats in Old Trafford’s North East Quadrant.

They believe the seats, which allow people to stand against a barrier, will ‘enhance spectator safety’ in areas where there is persistent standing.

Manchester United have requested permission to bring in safe standing to Old Trafford. Rail seating could be in place in the stadium later this season if permission is granted

The club are waiting to hear back from the Safety Advisory Group — a partnership between the local authority and other bodies including the police and fire service — on whether they will get the go-ahead.

Sources have suggested a trial could take place before the end of the current campaign, depending on the speed of response.

The move comes after Sportsmail revealed in September that United had launched a consultation on the matter.

Aware of fan support for safe standing, the club carried out a ‘detailed and comprehensive study’ into the feasibility of installing rail seats at the ground. United lodged the request in December and it is currently under review.

A recent change to the stadium safety guide means clubs can now install seats incorporating safety barriers in their grounds.

Standing was outlawed in the top two divisions following the Taylor Report into the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster.

As reported by Sportsmail, the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) have compiled an interim report into their season-long study on the safety risks of standing in stadiums.

The findings reveal that the installation of barriers in seated areas at football grounds, such as the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Molineux, has ‘mitigated the risk of crowd collapse’.

United have long voiced their support for safe standing, and the Government is keen to deliver its manifesto pledge of overseeing its introduction.

Tottenham already have the safe standing rail design implemented at their new stadium

Meanwhile, United have confirmed that they decided to cut away allocations to 3,000 for both legs of last month’s League Cup semi-final with Manchester City as part of a pre-emptive move, because they believe they are historically ‘unfairly’ penalised by their neighbours.

The club have described City’s decision to reduce their allocation at the Etihad for previous matches as ‘incorrect’ and believe it is unfair that they are the only team whose arrival is classed as having a ‘high risk of disorder’, which results in increased segregation.

United expected an allocation of signficantly less than the 5,500 they were entitled to under League Cup rules and acted to ‘ensure parity’ via the agreed cap for both ties. City would ordinarily have been allowed up to 7,200 seats at Old Trafford.

The move prompted a backlash from sections of both clubs’ support and United have made assurances that they will endeavour to provide full allocations in future.

United’s claims appear to have come as a surprise to City. A City spokesperson said: ‘This position is contrary to the case put to us by United before Christmas, which was to reduce the allocation at Old Trafford on the grounds of safety and which meant that commensurate action had to be taken for the fixture at the the Etihad.’

Jurgen Klopp hails 'cheeky' 10-year-old Manchester United fan who sent him a letter asking him to make Liverpool lose as Irish kid tells of his excitement to receive reply… and England rugby boss Eddie Jones is next in his sights!

* Daragh Curley from Ireland wrote to Jurgen Klopp asking for him to lose
* The Manchester United fan said it is 'very sad' that Liverpool keep winning
* To his astonishment, Klopp replied saying he could not fulfill his request
* On Friday, Daragh said he thought the letter was a trick when he first opened it
* In his press conference, Klopp praised the 'cheeky' lad and his 'smart idea'

The 10-year-old Manchester United fan who received a reply from Jurgen Klopp after asking him to lose said he thought somebody was playing a trick on him.

Daragh Curley, from County Donegal in Ireland, wrote a letter to the Liverpool manager after taking issue with the league leaders crushing unbeaten run.

He asked Klopp if he could make Liverpool lose and ideally never win again.

To Daragh's surprise, the Champions League-winning boss replied, saying he was unable to fulfill his request.

Speaking to Adrian Chiles alongside his father on BBC Radio 5 Live on Friday, Daragh explained his first thoughts were upon opening the letter: 'Is someone trying to play a trick on me?

'Then I saw the official paper and then I realised it was not a trick it was actually Jurgen Klopp.'

When asked if the heartfelt message from the Liverpool manager changed his thoughts about the club, Daragh replied: 'If they lose 5-0 I'll be a bit sad but if they lose 4-0 I'll be alright.'

Manchester United fan Daragh wrote a letter to Jurgen Klopp asking them to lose

Klopp also responded to the letter in his press conference today, praising the young fan as 'cheeky'.

He said: 'I can't answer all letters I get every day. It was nice, it was cheeky. We had time, I read the letter and replied, next day it was in the newspapers.

'I don't like that too much, but all fine, all fine. I like working for Liverpool and I like the rivalry, but I love even more if we can keep that on the pitch.'

The Reds boss had praised Daragh's passion in the letter and how he was a credit to Manchester United as a supporter.

The 10-year-old explained how Liverpool's success during this season was making him sad

He said in his press conference: '10 years old, cheeky, a nice age, when you should start being cheeky, and it was smart as well. A good idea, try it, why not.

'We try to respond to as many as possible, but it's not just possible. The letters are pretty much all friendly, but I cannot reply to all of them.'

When Daragh was asked if he had anyone else in his targets, the young lad said he would write to England rugby manager Eddie Jones asking if he could lose to Ireland in the Six Nations.

His letter to Klopp read: 'Dear Jurgen Klopp, My name is Daragh. I am 10 years old. I go to Glenswilly N.S in Donegal. I support Man United and the reason I am writing is to complain.

But the 10-year-old was left stunned when the Liverpool boss replied with a 262-word letter

'Liverpool are winning too many games. If you win nine more games then you have the best unbeaten run in English football. Being a United fan that is very sad.

'So the next time Liverpool play please make them lose. You should just let the other tam score. I hope I have convinced you to not win the league or win another match ever again. Yours sincerely, Daragh.'

Daragh was left stunned though when he received an official reply from Klopp, who although politely turned down his request, also offered words of wisdom to give the young United fan hope for the future.

Klopp's reply came explaining that while he cannot make Liverpool lose by choice, he also had a duty to make Reds fans around the world happy, saying: Unfortunately, on this occasion I cannot grant your request, not through choice anyway.

'As much as you want Liverpool to lose, it is my job to do everything that I can to help Liverpool to win as there are millions of people around the world who want that to happen so I really do not want to let them down.'

Klopp also explained to the 10-year-old how dominance was not permanent and the cycle of football will lead to eventual change.

He then said: 'I can safely say that one thing that will not change is your passion for football and for your club. Manchester United are lucky to have you.

'Although our clubs are great rivals we also share a great respect for one another. This, to me, is what football is all about.'

Black Manchester United worker, 19, claims club security guards called him a 'slave' and left him with a fractured eye socket as police investigate 'attack' before Europa League game

* Man United are assisting police with an investigation into alleged racist attack
* 19-year-old who worked in Old Trafford hospitality area was allegedly assaulted
* Account published on Twitter told how victim was challenged by security staff
* One allegedly called him a 'slave' and made other racist remarks
* Security guards then allegedly pinned the victim to a wall and punched him
* Security company CSG denied the allegations as 'totally false and fabricated'

A 19-year-old boy was allegedly called a 'slave' and left with bruised ribs and a fractured eye socket after security guards attacked him as he tried to make his way to work at a Manchester United home game.

The teenager, who was working for Arc hospitality firm at Old Trafford, was allegedly called a series of racist insults by security working for Controlled Solutions Group (CSG) before being pinned to a wall and assaulted.

The male victim, referred to as 'K' in an account of events published on Twitter by Manchester-based group Kids of Colour, was allegedly left requiring hospital treatment.

A picture taken four years ago of the alleged 19-year-old victim of a racist attack by security personnel outside Old Trafford before a match last month. The alleged victim was making his way to Old Trafford to work at the Europa League fixture between Manchester United and Club Brugge on February 27

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they had opened an investigation into 'a report of racially aggravated public order and alleged assault' with United co-operating.

Kids of Colour published a photograph of the alleged victim from four years ago in promotional literature for the Manchester United Foundation.

According to the account of events tweeted out by the Manchester community group, the 19-year-old, who had worked at Old Trafford for six months, was making his way to work at the stadium.

A CSG guard asked him 'what are you doing here?' and refused to believe that he worked there before calling over a supervisor.

One of the guards allegedly said 'surprised I didn't find a knife' after searching the teenager's bag before two other CSG guards allegedly started to make fun of him.

The security guards called three GMP police officers over, who allegedly ignored a complaint about the knife comment.

A guard then allegedly approached 'K' and said: 'I can buy and sell you. You're a slave'.

The first page of a statement relating to the incident released by Kids of Colour on Twitter

The detailed account of the alleged racist attack by security personnel outside Old Trafford

Another allegedly said: 'Look at you, you little scruff, what are you going to do, make tea and clean boots' and 'you're not going to see the ground today, you'll leave in cuffs.'

After 'K' was unable to contact his manager to verify his identity, the incident allegedly became physical with one guard twisting his wrist before others kicked his bike.

According to the account: 'They then threw his bike across the street, slammed K against a wall, and one guard put his hand across K's throat. Guards took it in turns to hit him in the stomach.'

He ultimately left the scene and went to hospital, where he was found to have bruised ribs and a fractured eye socket.

According to the account, police informed the victim that no CCTV footage of the incident was available.

However, police have since started an investigation with United's co-operation.

'Greater Manchester Police continue to investigate a report of racially aggravated public order and alleged assault on Sir Matt Busby Way, Manchester,' a police statement read.

'Shortly before 8pm on Thursday 27 February 2020 it was reported that two men subjected a man to racist comments before assaulting him.

'An account was taken from the victim later that evening and officers have since been keeping in contact with him while working to gather further important information.

'This includes reviewing CCTV images from the area where the incident is believed to have taken place to try and identify those potentially involved.

'GMP takes allegations of this nature very seriously and is committed to exploring every possible line of inquiry.'

Both the hospitality firm and the security company are third parties contracted by the club on matchdays.

A United spokesperson said: 'We are aware of an alleged serious incident prior to the Club Brugge match on 27 February.

'We are co-operating fully with the police and await an outcome from their investigation.'

CSG said they were supporting the police investigation but claimed the boy's account of events was 'totally false and fabricated.'

A CSG statement read: 'Controlled Solutions Group will comply fully with any investigation into the allegation of the assault or abuse by members of our staff.

'We categorically deny that any CSG staff were involved in an assault or abuse of any type on this individual. It is our opinion that this individual has made a totally false and fabricated account of assault or abuse against him by security staff.

'CSG will be fully compliant in support of any police or other investigation into these false allegations.

'We are extremely confident that there will be no further action by police or any evidence produced to corroborate this individual's claims following further inquiries.

'CSG will make no further comment on this issue.'

GAMES POSTPONED TO COMBAT CORONAVIRUS

Following the announcement today that the upcoming two rounds of Premier League competition and the upcoming round of FA Cup fixtures are to be suspended, Manchester United’s Premier League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 15 March and Norwich City in the FA Cup on Sunday 22 March have both been postponed.

A similar decision has been communicated by UEFA, meaning the second leg of our UEFA Europa League tie against LASK at Old Trafford on Thursday 19 March will also be postponed.

Academy games and our Women’s Super League fixtures will also be postponed until at least Saturday 4 April.

Clearly this is a rapidly evolving situation as part of collective efforts to combat the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). We trust that our fans will understand that protection of public health must be the priority.

New dates for our postponed games, and any decision about games subsequent to the current postponement period, will be confirmed as soon as possible, based on discussions with the governing bodies and any further guidance from the UK government.

It is currently planned that the postponements will allow the games to eventually go ahead with supporters in attendance, in which case existing tickets would remain valid. Further information on this will be provided to supporters as soon as more details are known.

Ed Woodward, Executive Vice Chairman, said: “While it is disappointing to see the season paused, we recognise there are bigger considerations as part of the need to help slow the spread of coronavirus.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, First Team Manager, said: “I would like to thank our fans for their tremendous support so far this season and we look forward to welcoming them back to Old Trafford as soon as is safely possible.”

Manchester United encourages fans around the world to follow health guidelines and thanks them for their support.
