Default Ivan Perisic

Ivan Perisic is wanted by Manchester United and Chelsea - here's all you need to know about the Croatian winger who could cost £48m

* Manchester United and Chelsea are pursuing Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic
* The Italian club want £48million for their star, but may have to sell
* Perisic starred at Euro 2016, and has previously played under Jurgen Klopp
* Sportsmail tells you all you need to know about the winger

With the English domestic season over, the Premier League's big boys have already turned their attention to the summer transfer window.

Manchester City's moves are already underway, while Chelsea and Manchester United look set to do battle for Ivan Perisic, Inter Milan's Croatian winger.

The club's sporting director Piero Ausilio seemed resigned to the winger leaving Inter this summer, with the Premier League his likely destination.

So what is it about Perisic that makes him so appealing? Sportsmail tells you all you need to know...

Manchester United and Chelsea are set to go head to head over Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic

Perisic? He's been around for ages hasn't he?

It certainly feels that way. He was first linked with a move to England as long ago as 2011, when Tottenham expressed an interest, but he decided instead to go to Borussia Dortmund - where he notably scored a stunner against Arsenal in the Champions League.

By that time he was already a Croatia international, and he started the first two games of Euro 2012 alongside Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic in midfield, before scoring a stunner for his country in the World Cup two years later.

So by the time he came to Euro 2016, by now an Inter player after a two-year spell with Wolfsburg, he was already a fairly high-profile player.

Ah, Euro 2016, that's where I remember him from!

And well you might. Perisic was absolutely brilliant at the tournament, probably the stand-out player of the group stages.

He scored two goals, including a blistering strike past potential new team-mate David de Gea, and provided an assist - in a Croatia team brimming with talent, he was directly involved in three of their five goals.

With his incredible energy on the wing, and his eye for goal, he emerged from that tournament looking every bit a Premier League-standard player.

And, perhaps for the first time in his career, Perisic has managed to string together a run of form for a significant length of time.

He had a good run at the end of last season, and has continued it this year, with 12 goals for club and country - albeit with two red cards thrown in.

OK, so remind me, what kind of player is he?

Going forward, Perisic's tried-and-tested technique when attacking defenders one-on-one has been a tendency to feint towards cutting in to the right before flashing through on the left of his marker and unleashing a cross of shot.

It is a tactic similar to that so-often used by Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben, entirely predictable but so difficult to stop at speed.

He covers a huge amount of ground on the flank but seems almost tireless, and is just the kind of player Mourinho likes.

A skillful winger, Perisic is direct and quick, but also prepared to work hard defensively

So will he suit United or Chelsea better?

It would be a surprise to see him play under Antonio Conte, because while he is happy to track back, Perisic really isn't a natural wing-back, nor could you see him replacing Eden Hazard or Pedro as one of the inside forwards - that said, Conte has converted less convincing players in the past, so who knows.

But Jose Mourinho would surely love his direct running and defensive tenacity, not to mention his power and athleticism.

Is he right for a really big club?

It's the only question-mark hanging over Perisic - he struggled at Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp, and while he has been good at Inter, that has been while the club has been poor.

At 28, he has never quite made it happen on the biggest stage - his Champions League experience amounts to 11 games back in his Dortmund days, and no team from Europe's elite has wanted him in the competition since 2013.

So, however good he may be, there is certainly a risk about his ability to step up to the very highest level - not least if he is part of a squad rotation system, because as he showed at Dortmund, he really doesn't like to sit on the bench.

What happened at Dortmund?

Klopp ended up telling Perisic he should 'keep his mouth shut', slamming the player as 'childish' after he complained about the now-Liverpool boss' apparent favouritism for Marco Reus and others.

Perisic had found himself in and out of the side and spoke out on television in his homeland, saying: 'I cannot be pleased with my situation at the club. I don't get a lot of time on the pitch, very much like last year.

'The stats show it: When I play I score. But when I don't score in a game, I am not an option for the next two or three games.'

Speaking specifically about Klopp he added: 'We have no relationship. He is the best coach in Germany right now, the number one, everyone accepts the subordinate role.'

His comments were not well-taken by Klopp, who responded: 'Public whining belongs to kindergarten, not to the world of adults.

'If he doesn't play, a football professional should shut his mouth, work hard and make the coach select him – not complain about it to the reporters.'
He was sold on as the manager lost patience.

So would he be a risk?

If Inter get the £48million that they are asking for, it would be a huge fee for a player of his age and with his CV.

That said, he has all the attributes to be a true star in the Premier League, and there is not a single right back in the division who would be happy to see him arrive!
