Massimiliano Allegri has 'deal in place with a great English club and will reject return to Juventus and AC Milan’ amid interest from Manchester United

* Juventus are reportedly keen for their former manager to replace Maurizio Sarri
* But Massimiliano Allegri is holding out for a move to Manchester United
* Serie A club AC Milan are also keen to re-acquire Allegri's services
* Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under pressure following a poor season so far

Massimiliano Allegri reportedly has a deal in place with a 'great English club' as rumours of a move to Manchester United gather pace.

Italian manager Allegri left Juventus at the end of last season, where he won five Serie A titles in as many years at the club.

However, with murmurs of Maurizio Sarri's job at Juve being under threat amid a poor recent run, Allegri has been linked with a return to both the Serie A holders and former club AC Milan though is set to reject both, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.

The report details that the 52-year-old is Juventus' top target to replace Sarri in the hotseat.

However, Allegri is not keen on a return to the Old Lady, nor is he willing to go back to the San Siro and Milan.

Although a deal is in place with a Premier League club, it is unknown which side in particular, though Manchester United have been heavily linked with the Italian in the past.

Current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been under pressure all season as his side are currently six points off the Premier League top-four and lie eighth in the table.

Sportsmail reported last month that Allegri has been holding off on an immediate return to management in the hope of eventually taking over at Old Trafford.

He is the sort of high profile candidate United would look to hire should Solskjaer leave, alongside former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

It is believed Arsenal were dissuaded from approaching him in December as they searched for a manager to replace the sacked Unai Emery.

Manchester United 'eye PSG boss Thomas Tuchel' along with Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri as they 'weigh up managerial options to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer'

* Manchester United are keeping tabs on Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel
* Red Devils are weighing up managerial options to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* According to reports in France, United are one of three clubs in for Tuchel
* Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri are also being lined up for the job

Manchester United are considering Thomas Tuchel as a possible replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports in France.

The Paris Saint-Germain boss has impressed United chiefs and is seen as a potential successor for Solskjaer this summer, should the Norwegian face the sack.

According to Le10 Sport, the Red Devils are growing to 'appreciate' the work he's doing in the French capital but could face a battle to secure his services.

The report suggests that Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on Tuchel as they face uncertainty over the current managers employed at their respective clubs.

Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri, who are both currently out of work, have also been linked with Solskjaer's job.

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham earlier this season after five years at the club, while Allegri left Juventus last summer, where he won five Serie A titles in as many years.

Pochettino has admitted that he would love a return to England's top flight and has been heavily linked with the United job for a number of years.

'To be honest, I would love to work in the Premier League,' he told Sky Sports.

'It's going to be difficult, I know, and for now it's a moment to wait and we'll see what happens.

'It's a moment of recovery, to think about yourself a little bit, and to be ready because in football always something can happen and you need to be ready.

'I'm ready and waiting for a new challenge. I have the belief and confidence that the next challenge will be fantastic.'

Allegri, meanwhile, reportedly has a deal in place with a 'great English club' with many believing it is United.

Sportsmail reported last month that Allegri has been holding off on an immediate return to management in the hope of eventually taking over at Old Trafford.

It is believed Arsenal were dissuaded from approaching him in December as they searched for a manager to replace the sacked Unai Emery.

kalo saya sih lebih memilih Allegri di urutan 1, lalu Pochettino walaupun belum kasih trophy buat Spurs dan Tuchel diurutan terakhir

'The Pochettino situation doesn't help': Lee Sharpe believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being put under MORE pressure at Manchester United by former Tottenham boss's availability

* Ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Man Utd job
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under pressure, with his side currently eighth in the table
* They face Chelsea on Monday night, who currently occupy fourth-place
* Former Red Devils midfielder Lee Sharpe says the speculation isn't helping

Former Manchester United midfielder Lee Sharpe says Mauricio Pochettino's current availability is putting added pressure on current Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has struggled in his first full season in charge - his side currently lie eighth in the Premier League, six points off the Premier League top-four.

Ex-Spurs boss Pochettino has been out of a job since November, and with rumours linking the Argentinean to the Old Trafford hotseat constantly in the headlines, Sharpe believes it is having an effect on Solskjaer's ability to do his job.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with the Old Trafford hotseat. Lee Sharpe believes Solskjaer will already be feeling the pressure without outside influences

'At a club like United, the pressure is on every week. You have to win every game and when you don't, the pressure mounts,' Sharpe told Sky Sports.

'He will have had a goal set at the start of the season which I believe would have been top four. If they don't get that questions will be asked and chats will be had behind the scenes.

'The Pochettino situation doesn't help matters but I also think Ole knows the pressure that comes with being in charge of the club.

'He doesn't need any outside influences putting extra pressure on him, he'll already be feeling it.'

Sharpe played for Manchester United between 1988 and 1996, winning three Premier League titles and the FA Cup on two occasions.

United, who have been training this week in Spain, return to Premier League action on Monday after a two-week break.

Solskjaer's side travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea, knowing a win will put them three points behind the Blues who currently occupy that coveted fourth spot.

Manchester United 'contact Mauricio Pochettino about replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager' following humiliating 6-1 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford

* Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under real pressure at the club
* The Red Devils were thumped 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon
* Reports claim the club have contacted Mauricio Pochettino who could be hired
* Argentinian boss Pochettino was a major success at Tottenham for five years

Manchester United have contacted Mauricio Pochettino about potentially replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club's manager, according to reports.

The Red Devils were humbled 6-1 at home by Pochettino's former club Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday which has clouded Solskjaer's future at the club in doubt.

The Argentinian manager has been out of a job since being sacked by Spurs 11 months ago and is he waiting for his next challenge in management.

Reports say Man United have spoken to Mauricio Pochettino about becoming their new coach. Pochettino could be lined up to replace under fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

And according to the Daily Star, senior figures at Old Trafford have contacted Pochettino's representatives and are asking whether he would be interested in the role.

The report says members of the United hierarchy want to see better results from Solskjaer and that chief executive Ed Woodward is reluctant to sack the Norwegian.

Therefore, the contact with Pochettino is only provisional in case they have to switch managers.

Chief executive Ed Woodward is reportedly reluctant to sack Solskjaer as manager. Pochettino was a success at Spurs and took the club to the Champions League final in 2019

Pochettino took Spurs from top-half regulars in 2014 to Champions League finalists five years later.

In that period, Tottenham also moved stadiums while the manager helped to create a strong core in the playing squad that includes club captain Hugo Lloris, defender Toby Alderweireld and star striker Harry Kane.

Though just five months after taking Spurs to the Champions League final, which they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in June 2019, Pochettino was relieved of his duties following a string of poor performances and was replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach took Spurs from 14th position to a sixth-placed finish by the end of the 2019-20 season and the club will compete in the Europa League group stages this month.

Questions are being asked about Solskjaer's competence as United manager despite a third-place finish in the Premier League last season.

However, Manchester United fans have also pointed the finger at other personnel at the club for their falling standards in recent weeks, which has seen them pick up just one win from their opening three matches of the Premier League season.

Chief executive Woodward's inability to bring in top transfer targets such as Jadon Sancho has been a concern for supporters, while regular defensive frailties from the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been pointed out by fans.

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward is 'prepared to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer' if poor results continue with Mauricio Pochettino waiting in the wings to take over at Old Trafford

* Ed Woodward is reportedly prepared to sack United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* The Manchester United boss is under pressure after the 6-1 defeat by Spurs
* Woodward has come under fire for his failings to land Solskjaer's main targets
* However, Solskjaer is expected to bear the brunt of bad performances
* Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is waiting in the wings for a return

Ed Woodward is prepared to sack Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if the club's poor results continue, The Mirror reports.

United have struggled for form in their opening three games of the Premier League campaign, with last Sunday's shock 6-1 defeat to Spurs at Old Trafford piling more pressure on Solskjaer.

And Woodward is reportedly prepared to put sentiment aside to sack the Norwegian, a fan-favourite owing to his heroics as a player under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ed Woodward is reportedly prepared to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if poor results continue. The United chief is prepared to put sentiments aside to dismiss the popular Norwegian boss

United's chief executive has come under fire for the club's disappointing transfer window, in which they failed in their pursuit for Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

Late swoops for Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles did little to ease criticism from United fans, with supporters bemoaning the club's transfer failings while their rivals strengthened their squads.

Yet Solskjaer is expected to bear the brunt of bad performances, should they continue, and the club are still interested in bringing in former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is yet to take charge of a side since leaving north London last term.

United have started the season poorly, falling to an astonishing 6-1 defeat to Spurs last week. The Red Devils are eyeing up a move for Mauricio Pochettino if they dismiss Solskjaer. It doesn't get easier for Solskjaer's side who face a tough run of fixtures later this month

The Argentine has reportedly rejected jobs elsewhere during his hiatus, with the 48-year-old prepared to wait for the right opportunity to arise.

Solskjaer was appointed as permanent manager in March 2018 after a positive tenure as temporary boss, providing the club a much needed boost following the negativity onset by the Jose Mourinho era.

The Norwegian guided the Red Devils into the top four last campaign, and the club reached three semi finals, but the side's form in the opening stages of this season has provided cause for concern among chiefs.

United lost their opening game 3-1 to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, before scraping past Brighton in a dramatic clash on the south coast which saw the Seagulls strike the woodwork no less than five times.

Sunday's astonishing defeat to Spurs, though, sent shockwaves through the club to the extent that Woodward is reportedly undeterred by Solskjaer's legendary status when it comes to assessing his position as manager.

The United chief is said to have singled out Liverpool's decision to sack icon Kenny Dalglish in 2012 as justification to part ways with the popular Norwegian.

United have a tough run of fixtures coming up after the international break. They first take on Newcastle before facing Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton in the league, as well as Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig in Europe.

Manchester United risk missing out on Mauricio Pochettino to replace under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Argentine holding talks with one high-profile club over a return to the dugout

* Manchester United risk missing out on Mauricio Pochettino as their new boss
* The Argentine is the favourite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he is sacked
* Former Spurs boss Pochettino is understood to have held talks with one club
* It is understood that United stars would support arrival of the Argentine coach

Manchester United risk missing out on Mauricio Pochettino if they don’t act soon, with pressure growing on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sportsmail understands there would be significant support from inside the United dressing room for former Tottenham boss Pochettino to take over if it is decided Solskjaer’s reign should come to an end.

Pochettino has been out of work for almost a year following his sacking at Spurs — but his appearance on Sky Sports on Monday night was a clear sign that he is now ready to return to the dugout. It is understood the Argentine has had a conversation with at least one high-profile club in recent weeks with a view to a potential return to work.

Manchester United risk missing out on Mauricio Pochettino if they do not move swiftly. The ex-Spurs boss is favourite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as pressure continues to grow

Pochettino would be a strong contender to replace Solskjaer but United will not be the only interested party. United are continuing to back Solskjaer but the prospect of missing out on Pochettino will not be lost on the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Solskjaer’s position is again under intense scrutiny following Sunday’s loss to Arsenal, which left them in 15th place in the Premier League, followed by Wednesday’s defeat by Champions League minnows Istanbul Basaksehir.

Defeat at Everton on Saturday would increase the pressure on the Norwegian ahead of the international break.

Pochettino is understood to have been approached by one high-profile club already. The United dressing room is believed to support the notion of Pochettino taking over as boss

Solskjaer remains a popular figure among the playing squad, who view the United legend as a likeable character. But there are concerns over whether he is the man to turn the club’s season around.

United have enjoyed some stellar Champions League results this season, beating Paris Saint-Germain then Red Bull Leipzig 5-0. But doubts over Solskjaer’s standing as an elite coach remain.

There is also a feeling within the squad that the club would benefit from appointing a technical director to ensure there is a clear plan of action with regard to recruitment.

Will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be sacked as manager if Manchester United lose at Everton or can he fend off the latest crisis as Mauricio Pochettino lurks as a possible replacement following a woeful start to the season? Sportsmail's experts have their say

* Manchester United suffered a shock defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir in Europe
* Champions League defeat comes following woeful start to the Premier League
* United head into Saturday's clash with Everton 15th and already playing catch up
* Defeat at Goodison Park could leave them nine points off a top-four spot

It's all going wrong for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and now questions loom over his future following a shambolic 2-1 defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir.

Although the loss only represents a dent in what has otherwise been an encouraging start in their Champions League group, it also comes at a time when the Red Devils are in woeful domestic form.

Solskjaer's side have taken just one point at home from four games and have lost to Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – with the latter even resulting in a 6-1 humiliation.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under pressure at Manchester United following a poor start. His United team suffered a Champions League shock after losing at Istanbul Basaksehir

It leaves them all the way down in 15th as they travel to fourth-place Everton on Saturday in a crucial Premier League encounter which if they lose again could see them as much as nine points off a top-four spot.

So should and will United stick with Solskjaer if they lose at Goodison Park? Can he still turn it round and if not who should replace him?

Our team of experts give their answers as the pressure ramps up on the United manager.

Should Solskjaer be sacked if United lose to Everton?

IAN LADYMAN: Only if United know who they would like to replace him with and that man is called Mauricio Pochettino.

DOMINIC KING: No. If they believe he is still the man the morning after losing in Istanbul, nothing will have suddenly changed in 72 hours. It is hard not to have sympathy with Solskjaer. The people above him are failing him.

JACK GAUGHAN: No, the previous victories in the Champions League have bought him time. Wins over RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain were statements.

DANIEL MATTHEWS: There’s a fair case to be made that Solskjaer should be sacked regardless of what happens against Everton. The calamity in Istanbul was not a turning point – United had responded to a 6-1 defeat by Spurs with a brilliant win over RB Leipzig, after all. It was just another day at a club where every step forward is followed by at least one back. The cold truth is this: there has been no sustained evidence that Solskjaer is capable of closing the gap on the country’s top two. If anything, United are now losing ground on the top four. We didn’t need defeat by Basaksehir to know Ole isn’t the second coming.

A dejected-looking Solskjaer shakes hands with his players following defeat in Istanbul

Will he be sacked if United lose at Everton?

IL: No but the wheels will start to turn for him.

DK: Possibly. The drums have been rumbling around his position for some time and there were indications he could have gone after the 6-1 defeat by Spurs. A two-week international break is now what he needs.

JG: I wouldn’t imagine so. United have not been trigger happy in previous years - Jose Mourinho could’ve gone far sooner than he eventually did.

DM: I doubt it – the club have made it plain they want to back their man and you can’t imagine Ed Woodward is rushing to sack another manager. It’s difficult to see what they’re waiting for, though. Surely they can see there are upgrades out there?

Does he stand any chance of turning things around?

IL: Yes he does because he has some good players who are capable of going on runs of good form. They have shown that before. It is also a poor league. What I am also sure of is that he is not the man for the long term. United remain a one step forward and two steps back team.

DK: It depends what ‘turning things around’ means. Will he get Manchester United back towards the top six? Yes. Will he make them a fearsome prospect for the rest of the Premier League. Not with a squad as inconsistent as the one in his charge.

JG: It doesn’t appear that way. United under Solskjaer are never consistently bad but then never consistently good enough either. They’re stuck in an uncomfortable malaise.

DM: It depends on what defines a turnaround. United will be fine this season – they will be in the hunt for the top four, they may even win a cup. But are there any signs that, given more time, Ole will bring the glory days back to Old Trafford? No.

There are doubts over whether Solskjaer can make United Premier League title winners again

Who should replace him if he does lose his job?

IL: Mauricio Pochettino.

DK: If Pochettino isn’t a unanimous answer, I would be amazed. His appointment looked like it would happen two years ago. It seems inevitable he will one day get a crack at this position.

JG: Pochettino is the only man with both a profile large enough and appetite for a big rebuilding project suitable to take it on.

DM: Pochettino, if he’d take it. The Argentine went on Monday Night Football and told the world he wants a job. Almost every club should want to hire him. Especially United.

Manchester United 'approach Mauricio Pochettino about replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer' with club chiefs keen to get a new boss lined up... despite being reluctant to sack their under-fire manager

* Reports say Man United have made contract with Mauricio Pochettino's people
* It comes with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under intense pressure after poor results
* Saturday's visit to Everton has become absolutely crucial with United in 15th
* They were shambolic defensively in a shock 2-1 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir
* Ex-Tottenham boss Pochettino is bookmakers' favourite to replace Solskjaer

Manchester United are reported to have approached Mauricio Pochettino with a view to him replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their manager.

Solskjaer is under intense pressure following back-to-back defeats by Arsenal in the Premier League and Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League and he now leads the bookmakers' sack race.

And according to the Manchester Evening News, United have contacted Pochettino's representatives. It has been reported previously that Pochettino is keen to manage United at some point and that stance is not believed to have changed.

The move comes despite United insiders privately backing Solskjaer prior to Wednesday night's defeat and a reluctance within the club to sack him so early in the season.

Saturday's visit to Everton has become crucial for Solskjaer as United could end the weekend sitting 17th in the Premier League table if they lose at Goodison Park.

It follows an inconsistent start to the season that has included a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Tottenham but Champions League wins over Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig.

They are 15th in the Premier League table having lost three of their opening six matches.

United insist Solskjaer still has their backing and no approach has been made for Pochettino to replace him.

Manchester United are reported to have approached Mauricio Pochettino with a view to him replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their manager following a dismal start to the season. Solskjaer cut a glum figure as United slumped to an embarrassing defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Pochettino, is the clear favourite with the bookies to replace Solskjaer as United's manager. It will fall on United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the club hierarchy to decide Solskjaer's future. Pochettino has been linked with the Manchester United job in the past and said this week he would like to take on another challenge in England

Pochettino, the former Southampton and Tottenham manager, is the bookmakers' odds-on favourite to be the next United boss.

The trip to Everton is United's last fixture before a two-week international break that has become synonymous with managerial sackings.

Solskjaer dismissed speculation over his future in the wake of the defeat in Istanbul, which saw some horrendous defending for Basaksehir's first goal.

'I decline to comment on such a thing,' said Solskjaer.

'Of course it's early on and opinions are out there all the time and you've got to stay strong.

'I'm employed by the club to do a job and I do that to the best of my ability with our staff.'

Pochettino has been on United's managerial shortlists in the past and made it clear during an appearance on Sky's Monday Night Football this week that he is ready for a new challenge.

'I am always ready to be involved in the game again. I love football. It's my passion, not my job.

'I am looking forward to being involved in the game again, I love the game. It's difficult; we are inside, we are working, we are doing things but it is not the same thing to be involved every day, to share it with your players, your staff and your club. You miss that.'

United would not have to pay Pochettino's former club Tottenham any form of compensation as the deadline passed in May. The 48-year-old left Spurs after five-and-a-half years last November to be replaced by former United boss Jose Mourinho.

Having also managed Southampton prior to that, Pochettino has extensive knowledge of English football.

He hasn't won any silverware during his time in England though he did lead Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been under pressure 'SINCE DAY ONE' as Manchester United boss and must get used to it, warns former Old Trafford assistant Steve McClaren

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been under pressure 'from day one' at Man United
* Steve McClaren said fans wanted him to be sacked after the 'honeymoon period'
* McClaren believes he has been scrutinised due to fans 'passion' and 'frustration'
* Solskjaer has come under fire again for his lack of results at home for United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been under pressure 'from day one' at Manchester United, says former assistant coach Steve McClaren.

McClaren recalled how fans had called for Solskjaer to be 'sacked' after his initial 'honeymoon period' before United finished 'very well' in the league.

McClaren believes criticisms of Solskjaer - who has recently come under fire for his side's performances at Old Trafford this season - comes from 'passion' and 'frustration' combined.

He told Monday's talkSPORT Breakfast: 'I think he's had this from day one, from coming in.

'He had a honeymoon period and got the job, and they've had spells [of bad form]. He had it last season, two or three times, where it was 'Ole for the sack'.

'But they finished the season very well and started this season very poorly, so two or three times already [there have been calls for his sacking].

'It's bound to get to you. It's just the sheer frustration and you can't do anything about it.

'It's frustration not just of results but also of the players, and to finally get a result like that when needed – wow!

'As a manager it's such a big relief and you can breathe easy and sleep easy for the next few weeks, but then it starts again.'

United are yet to win on home soil in 2020-2021, but they have claimed maximum points on the road.

United currently sit 14th in the Premier League after seven matches - a total of eight points off leaders Leicester City.

Solskjaer faced further scrutiny after sustaining a Champions League group stage defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir.

He has, however, eased the tension with a 3-1 win over Everton on Saturday.

Solskjaer is hopeful that his side have turned a corner, but McClaren is adamant there are fundamental issues that must be addressed in order to succeed this season.

He said: 'I've seen them a lot this season and, for me, it's all about work rate. Not on the ball, they've got that, but off the ball. Win the ball back quickly.

'Talk about the back four being exposed, why do they get exposed? Because they are not working hard enough in front. It starts at the front, in terms of winning the ball back.

'You look at Liverpool and Man City and the intensity of the game from the front to the back. I think that was the key.

'[Scott] McTominay and Fred, when they've played in there and protected the back four, especially the two centre-backs who have been exposed. They are exposed against top quality players and conceded goals.

'It was attitude, work rate and determination, and all 11 players were willing to work for the shirt.

'They are all fighting against the world after the last two results before Saturday. It's good; it's a siege mentality and a bit of anger, passion and emotion.

'To be fair it’s what you want to see, and what supporters want to see. Seeing that after the game.

'The key now is to have a breather and have a break, and come back from the internationals fit. And start playing consistently like that and win games consistently.'

Ed Woodward insists Manchester United are 'absolutely committed' to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager, despite club sitting 14th in the Premier League and losing three of their opening seven matches

* Manchester United have taken just 10 points from their first seven league games
* The pressure was cranked up on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after two straight defeats
* But he alleviated some of the pressure after they beat Everton last weekend
* Mauricio Pochettino has been linked but Ed Woodward is supporting Solskjaer

Ed Woodward has gone public with his backing of Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite the club's indifferent start to the season.

United have taken just 10 points and suffered three defeats from their opening seven Premier League fixtures and sit in 14th in the table ahead of the resumption of action next weekend.

The club's indifferent form has led to growing speculation that former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino could be set to take over at Old Trafford, although United returned to winning ways before the current international break.

Ed Woodward has publicly backing Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Woodward praised the 'positive path' United are on under the Norwegian manager

Now speaking in a statement released along with the club's first-quarter financial results, United executive vice-chairman Woodward said the board will continue to back the 'positive path' they are on under the Norwegian boss.

'While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause significant disruption, we are optimistic that the recovery and normalisation phase is gradually coming into view,' Woodward said.

'The club's resilience and our strong commercial business continue to provide a solid foundation and gives us confidence in our long-term outlook beyond the pandemic, both on and off the pitch.

'We recognise that not all football clubs are in as robust of a financial position and that the Premier League has a responsibility to support the wider English football pyramid.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino had been heavily linked with the Old Trafford job. Mauricio Pochettino said he is willing to return but a comeback is not thought to be imminent. But Woodward has now come out in support of Solskjaer in a statement published by the club

'We will continue to push for this support, both through emergency assistance during the pandemic, and through longer-term reforms to ensure that the success of the Premier League is reinforced for the benefit of the national game as a whole.

'On the pitch, while there is still hard work ahead to achieve greater consistency, we remain absolutely committed to the positive path we are on under Ole as the team continues to develop.

'We miss playing in front of our fans and we are working hard together with our governing bodies and relevant authorities to ensure that fans can safely return as soon as possible.

'Finally, I would like to stress our steadfast commitment to increasing equality, diversity and inclusion across our club and the game as a whole. To that end, we were pleased to be among the first clubs to sign up to the FA Football Leadership Diversity Code.

'Football has made good progress in this area but there is much more work to do and Manchester United is determined to be at the forefront of those efforts.'

United were still left red-faced despite backing the Norwegian, with their latest financial results released a day early by mistake after US company Toppan Merrill published the figures during a test run.

The figures show the devastation caused by the Covid pandemic with commercial, matchday and total revenues hit.

United's net debt, a legacy of the Glazer family's heavily-leveraged takeover, was up to £440.6m, however the gross principal debt remains unchanged.

Pressure was heaped on Solskjaer after Man United suffered two consecutive defeats. But some of the pressure was lifted off the Norwegian after his side beat Everton last weekend

Matchday revenue took the biggest hit, with a 92.3 per cent fall year on year, with matches being played behind closed doors.

The public endorsement of Solskjaer from United however comes after reports suggested that Argentinian boss Pochettino is waiting to see how the situation evolves at Old Trafford as well as at Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Spurs boss was heavily linked with the United hotseat after the club lost back-to-back fixtures against Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir, but some of the pressure was released by beating Everton last weekend.

But a video from The Athletic, via the Tifo Podcast, detailed that the 48-year-old manager is in all likelihood not on the verge of taking up a new job any time soon.

However, speaking to Sky Sports' Monday Night Football last week, the Argentine did confirm he would like to return to the game as soon as possible.

'I am always ready to go again and be involved in the game,' Pochettino said.

'It's not stress when you are working, it's not stress going into the training round to prepare the match and to compete.

'I hope to go back soon so we can start again to work. I am looking forward to being back in the game. I love this game but it's difficult. We are inside and working on doing things. That's the reality.'
