Nemanja Vidic enjoyed his best season yet in a United shirt during 2008/09, a fact not lost on his team-mates, who voted the towering Serbian defender the players' player of the year at the Reds' end-of-season awards.

He was also the fans' choice, picking up the coveted Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

The achievements were richly deserved and came at the end of a campaign in which Vidic helped the Reds to an 18th league title, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Carling Cup.

Tall, athletic and solid as a rock, Vida is uncompromising in the tackle and formidable in the air. He began his career with boyhood club Red Star Belgrade, joining their youth programme at 14. His first-team debut didn't arrive until 2001 but he went on to make 22 appearances in his first season.

He eventually ended his stay with Red Star by leading them to Serbia's domestic league and cup double before switching to Russian outfit Spartak Moscow in August 2004. Just 39 games and four goals later, United came calling.

The Reds announced his signing on Christmas Day, 2005. He hadn’t played for two months as the Russian season had recently ended, so it took time for his true ability to shine. But after completing an intensive training programme, Vida began to show his class.

A collar-bone injury sustained at the end of March 2007 kept Vidic out of the bulk of United's title run-in that season, but his performances until that point had been strong enough to help the Reds to the top of the league. His play also inspired a rousing song among the matchgoing faithful.

The Serbian’s impressive performances continued and earned him a contract extension in 2007 to keep him at the club until 2012.

He said of the improved deal: “Playing in this team is a great privilege. This is such a great club, I am delighted to be able to extend my stay here. The fans and everyone at the club have been very special to me. I hope I can do my bit to bring the club even more trophies in the years ahead.”

True to his word, he's done just that. And while Vida's game has always been built on solid defending, the 2008/09 campaign was also highly profitable at the other end of the pitch. The Serbian chipped in with regular goals, including an injury-time winner against Sunderland and precious openers against Chelsea and Internazionale.

"I love the feeling when you score," Nemanja says, "especially because it's not one of my main jobs. But I try and take up good positions and go up for corners. If you get lucky it's a great feeling."

On 17 July 2006, Vidić married Ana Ivanović, an economics student at the University of Belgrade (no relation to the Serbian tennis star of the same name). Together, they have a son named Luka. On 27 May 2009, Ana gave birth to their second son, Stefan, while Vidić was in Rome playing for Manchester United in the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final against Barcelona.

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic could be in line for a ban, should the Football Association decide to charge him with violent conduct, after an angry incident at the DW Stadium yesterday in which he appeared to slap Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega.

The Colombian had clattered into United keeper Ben Foster as he challenged for the ball, and the Serbian centre-back reacted with annoyance.

The Daily Mail reports that the FA is considering using video evidence to establish whether the Serb is guilty or not, whilst Rodallega himself could also face sanctions after shrugging off referee Howard Webb a little too assertively when the official was asking him to calm down.

Webb did not see the alleged slap, and FA officials will be asking him what he would have done had he seen the incident.

This could result in a three-game ban for Vidic, not what Red Devils manager Alex Ferguson needs currently, with centre-back Johnny Evans perhaps requiring surgery after limping out of yesterday's match having aggravated an injury.

Rio Ferdinand is still out of action for the Mancunians with a thigh problem, reducing Ferguson's options at the heart of his defence.

Nemanja Vidic believes the experience of losing a Champions League final will drive Manchester United to do better this season. United play the German champions, Wolfsburg, at Old Trafford tomorrow in the second round of matches in Group B.

"It is a very bad feeling when you go to a final and lose and that one is a particularly bad memory," said Vidic of United's defeat by Barcelona in May. "You do have to acknowledge it is better to get to the final and lose than not be there at all and that to stand up you need to sit. But it is hard. We all know how we felt. We need to make sure it doesn't happen again."

United have won seven matches in a row, suggesting a balance has been found following the loss in the summer of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

"Ronaldo and Tevez are quality players, there is no question about that," Vidic said. "But it is hard to say whether we have got over losing them. We will probably only know that at the end of the season.

"If we don't win trophies, people will say it is because they have gone, although that is not necessarily the case. At the moment we are doing well. We have had the best start in the four years I have been here. There is no question we have quality players but, for me, the really encouraging sign is that we are still not in the best form.

"You don't want to be at your highest level at this stage. We have to be ready for the most important games at the end."

When Ronaldo made his world record £80m move to Real Madrid, more attention was focused on Wayne Rooney.

"It is wrong that people are suddenly looking at Wayne," Vidic said. "He has always been an important player for us so, in that sense, nothing has changed. Sometimes he does things the fans don't see because he is doing a job for the team.

"This year he is even more noticeable because he is scoring goals and has a different role in the team. But we don't need to put pressure on him. We know all about his ability."

Vidic seeks the perfect gift

Birthday boy Nemanja Vidic is hoping for the perfect present when United meet CSKA Moscow in Russia tonight.

The Serbian centre-back says victory in the Luzhniki Stadium would be the best way to celebrate turning 28. But his appearance at the heart of United’s defence will hinge on how he pulled up after the Reds’ training session on Tuesday evening.

Vidic missed United’s match against Bolton last weekend through injury but was confident of being passed fit for action against CSKA.

“I’ll see how I go at training, especially because the match will be played on a plastic pitch. But I hope I’ll be ready,” he told MUTV on Tuesday afternoon.

The defender is expecting “a difficult game” against a Russian side he knows all too well after spending 18 months at rivals Spartak Moscow.

“The Spartak-CSKA rivalry is like United-Liverpool, so I might get some stick off their fans,” he admitted. “But it will just inspire me to play better and help us win the game.”
