PICTURES: Varela completing medical ahead of Manchester United move









Guillermo Varela will this afternoon complete his medical ahead of his move to Manchester United in a deal believed to be worth around €2 million.

The 20-year-old Uruguayan right-back will become David Moyes’ first signing as United manager when the deal is finalised on July 1.

An exciting and adventurous defender, Varela impressed United coaches when he had a trial at the club a few months ago and United have followed through to bring the South American to Old Trafford.

Speaking with A Lo Penarol in Uruguay before flying over for his medical, Varela insisted he knew he had to brush up on his English skills but was looking forward to the opportunity.

“I need to learn English. Catino has taught me a little. The setup [at Man United] is great,” he said.

Although it is always exciting to see young and talented prospects joining the ranks of United, I’m sure that 21-year-old Marnick Vermijl will be ahead of him in the pecking order of right-back given the solid season he has had and the fact that he made his first-team debut last year.

Despite that, I look forward to seeing Varela in action for Uruguay at the U20 FIFA World Cup in Turkey this June to see why we were so keen to secure his signature before the tournament.

But given the impact of Hernandez and unquestionable talent of Henriquez, our South American scouts know a player when they see one so hopefully Varela will be more of the same.

United reach agreement to sign Varela

Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement to sign 20-year-old defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol for an undisclosed fee.

Guillermo will immediately join up with the Uruguay Under-20 squad for the upcoming FIFA Under 20 World Championships in Turkey.

On Friday, Manchester United reached an agreement with Club Atlético Peñarol to sign Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela.

Here, we assess the highly-rated youngster and learn more about his promising career...

The basics: Varela, who was born in Montevideo on 24 March 1993, is an ambitious full-back who plays on the right flank for South American giants Penarol in his native Uruguay.

The background: The 20-year-old has made one first-team appearance at the Centenario Stadium but is a regular for Uruguay's Under-20s with nine caps to his name.

The links: Guillermo recently completed a trial at Carrington and later spoke positively about the experience to South American radio station Tirando Paredes: “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test myself with Manchester United. I'm glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito helped me a lot.”

The manager: “This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can’t deny him the opportunity to join a club like this.” – Penarol head coach Jorge Da Silva.

The future: After reaching an agreement at Carrington on Friday, Varela's next step is to fly to Turkey to represent Uruguay at the World Under-20 Championships – where future team-mates Angelo Henriquez (Chile), Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe and Larnell Cole (England) are also taking part. The tournament begins on Friday 21 June.

Belum ada statistik dari Varela dari sumber- sumber yang biasanya bro, karena Varela belum pernah main di tim utama Penarol. Mau bandingkan pemain tim utama dengan pemain specialis U21 kayanya gak setara deh.

Info yang didapat memang hanya bisa main di pos RB, tinggi lebih pendek 1cm dari Rafael, kecepatan kayanya masih unggul si Rafael bahkan si Vermijl dari U21. Tapi namanya scouting United sudah putuskan untuk merekomendasi namanya dan manajemen sudah beli pasti ada yang special darinya yang belum diketahui banyak orang.
