Default Re: [EL] Real Sociedad vs Manchester United

Manchester United's could be forced to play Europa League first leg tie against Real Sociedad in TURIN due to travel restrictions in Spain

* Man United will take on Real Sociedad in the Europa League first leg next week
* However, the fixture may be played in Juventus’s home ground in Turin instead
* Spain has refused to grant exemptions to elite sports teams to enter the country
* Therefore, it is Sociedad’s responsibility to find a different venue for the game

Manchester United's Europa League first leg tie against Real Sociedad next week could be switched to another country due to travel restrictions in Spain.

It’s understood that Juventus’s home ground in Turin is one of the venues being considered for the last 32 match a week on Thursday.

The Spanish government has refused to grant exemptions to elite sports teams from the UK to travel to the country without the need to quarantine despite appeals from the Spanish FA and Sociedad.

If the game cannot be staged in San Sebastian, it is Sociedad’s responsibility to find an alternative venue and it’s believed the club have already contacted Juventus. However, that would also require the permission of the Italian government for United and Sociedad to travel to the country.

A final decision is expected in the next couple of days although there are no issues over the home leg at Old Trafford a week later on February 25.

United are one of a number of English teams facing disruption when European competition resumes this month.

The club’s Europa League campaign was hit by the coronavirus pandemic last season when five months separated the two legs of their last 16 tie against LASK Linz due to the shutdown.

The quarter-final against FC Copenhagen and semi-final against Sevilla were then staged in Cologne.

Default Re: [EL] Real Sociedad vs Manchester United

Man United to face Real Sociedad in Turin as UEFA confirm Europa League first-leg 'away' fixture will be held at the Juventus Stadium due to Covid restrictions preventing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side travelling to Spain

* Manchester United's Europa League clash with Real Sociedad has been moved
* The match will take place on the same date but the action will unfold in Italy
* Turin's Juventus Stadium has been allocated the fixture for the first leg match
* Covid-19 travel restrictions in Spain meant it was not possible the host the game

The first leg of Manchester United's Europa League last-32 knockout clash against Real Sociedad has been moved to take place in Turin.

The two sides will meet inside the home of the Serie A champions Juventus, due to travel restrictions in Spain amid the coronavirus pandemic preventing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side travelling to the Basque region of Spain.

A statement was released by tournament hosts UEFA on Monday, detailing when and where the fixture will take place.

The statement read: 'UEFA can confirm that the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 first leg match between Real Sociedad and Manchester United FC will now take place at the Juventus Stadium in Turin.

'The date of the match (18 February 2021) and kick-off time (18:55CET) will remain the same.

'UEFA would like to thank Real Sociedad and Manchester United FC for their close cooperation and assistance in finding a solution to the issue at hand, as well as the Italian Football Federation and Juventus for their support and agreeing to host the match in question.'

Manchester United's Europa League match against Real Sociedad will be played in Turin, Italy. Real Sociedad cannot hold the game in San Sebastian due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Like last year the tournament has been disrupted, with United playing the quarters in Germany

It will be United's second visit to Juventus' Allianz Stadium, home of the 36-time Italian champions since 2011.

Current travel restrictions in Spain, implemented due to the ongoing battle against Covid-19, mean that visitors from the United Kingdom are currently not permitted to enter the country.

The Spanish government has not granted elite sports people exemption to allow teams such as United to travel to the country for the game without the need to quarantine.

The second leg at Old Trafford, on February 25 is not affected by the same restrictions and will go ahead as planned behind closed doors.

The disruption to the tournament continues, after last season's offering was also hampered in its latter stages.

The knockout rounds were concluded as one-off ties in Germany due to the disruption caused by the pandemic, with United defeating FC Copenhagen in Cologne before then being beaten by Sevilla in the semi-finals.

Default Re: [EL] Real Sociedad vs Manchester United

Real Sociedad chief insists Man United have an 'unfair' advantage after their home leg of Europa League last-32 tie was moved to Turin due to Covid travel rules... but Red Devils will still host LaLiga side at Old Trafford

* Real Sociedad meet Manchester United in the Europa League knockout stages
* The first leg has been moved from Spain to Turin in Italy due to Covid travel rules
* However, the return leg will still be played at United's Old Trafford a week later
* La Real chief Roberto Olabe says the return leg should also be at a neutral venue

Real Sociedad's director of football Roberto Olabe has hit out at UEFA after they moved the first leg of their Europa League clash with Manchester United to Turin – with the return leg still being played at Old Trafford.

The two sides were due to meet at Real Sociedad's Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian next Thursday but strict travel restrictions in Spain will prevent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side from travelling to the Basque region of the country.

Current travel restrictions in Spain, implemented due to the ongoing battle against Covid-19, mean that visitors from the United Kingdom are currently not permitted to enter the country.

Real Sociedad chief Roberto Olabe slams UEFA for moving the first leg of their clash vs United. Olabe believes Real Sociedad have a good chance of knocking the Red Devils out of Europe

As a result, UEFA confirmed on Monday that the first leg would instead be played at Juventus' Allianz Stadium in Italy.

However, the decision has been labelled by Olabe as 'unfair' as he claims United still get their home advantage by playing at the Theatre of Dreams the week after.

'I would like the return to be also on a neutral ground or for UEFA to appoint a single venue for a one-game tie as it did last year,' Olabe told Diario Vasco.

'It does not seem coherent to me that as the home team, we play in a neutral field and as a visitor, we do it there, but that's the way things are.'

Despite what would be perceived as a disadvantage, Olabe believes his side have a good chance of knocking the Red Devils out of their second European competition this season.

The first leg has been moved from Spain to Allianz Stadium in Turin due to Covid travel rules. However, Old Trafford will stage the return leg a week later, which is deemed unfair by Olabe

He added: 'I'm very excited, and yes, I think we can eliminate them. However, Manchester United have one of the most complete squads in the world, with an exceptional level of players.'

Spain is on a 'red list' of countries drawn up by the UK Government, which will heavily restrict movement into and out of those nations.

On Tuesday, Spain recorded more than three millions positive Covid cases, while also registering 766 deaths in the past 24 hours – their highest daily death toll of the current third wave to hit the country.

Of those three million cases nationwide, 63,000 of those cases have resulted in death.

There are also 550,000 active cases in Madrid at the time of writing.

The first legs of Liverpool and Manchester City's Champions League ties against RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach have been moved to Budapest given strict travel restrictions imposed in Germany.

The German government has banned most foreign travel into the country due to new Covid variants and sporting fixtures are not deemed as special circumstances.

City's last-16 tie with the Bundesliga outfit will now take place at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on February 24 after talks between the two clubs.

Hungary's national stadium is also hosting Liverpool's clash with Julian Nagelsmann's RB Leipzig next Tuesday.

Furthermore, Arsenal have also seen the first leg of their Europa League last-32 match moved for the same reasons.

It was announced that the Gunners will take on Benfica in Rome next week.
