'We have been setting targets for each other': Jesse Lingard reveals he's in friendly competition with team-mate Marcus Rashford as Manchester United duo target top-four finish

Jesse Lingard has revealed he is in friendly competition with team-mate Marcus Rashford as the Manchester United duo target a top-four finish.

The Red Devils are only two points off the final Champions League spot after going 10 games unbeaten since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed interim manager in December.

Forward Rashford is in a rich vein of form, scoring six goals and providing two assists in Solskjaer's 10 matches in charge.

Midfielder Lingard has also played an important role in United's improvement in form in recent weeks. The 26-year-old has found the net on three occasions and contributed two assists.

Lingard has disclosed that himself and Rashford, who scored the winner at Leicester on Sunday, are involved in a head-to-head battle.


Manchester United are just two points off fourth under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Lingard also praised the impact Solskjaer has had on the camp since taking over in December

'Marcus and me have been setting targets for each other to challenge ourselves,' he said at the launch of the Coca-Cola and Premier League campaign, ‘Where Everyone Plays’ on Tuesday.

'I'm not going to go into the amount of numbers involved because then everyone will know.

'It's to do with goals, but not just how many we can score each. Assists as well.'

Lingard also praised the impact Solskjaer has had on the camp and the way he has turned performances around following the departure of Jose Mourinho.

'We got that run of games that we needed and the momentum is going now,' he said.

'He understands the way we play, he has got the lads firing. We understand the tactics, we've got a structure now and hopefully we can go on.'

United travel to Fulham on Saturday where they will be looking to leapfrog fourth-placed Chelsea - for 24 hours at least.
