Partick Thistle 1-5 Celtic: Bhoys' rout seals title for Lennon and jubilant travelling army

For long enough, the SPFL have told us that Glasgow derbies can no longer decide the destination of the league title. Celtic showed it can be done with the minimum of fuss.

On a raucous night in the city’s west end, the Parkhead club secured their 45th Scottish League championship.

They did so in emphatic fashion, heightening the lingering concerns over Partick Thistle’s Premiership safety in the process.

An Anthony Stokes header in the fourth minute raised expectations of a coronation by half-time.

It didn’t happen. But, as so often in a one-sided procession towards a third successive flag for Neil Lennon’s side, a foot to the accelerator was followed by the discovery of another gear.

For 17-year-old Liam Henderson, the occasion was one he will remember for some time.

A substitute for right-back Adam Matthews at half-time, the young midfielder had been on the pitch just four minutes when he thumped the second goal into the back of the net.

It was his first senior goal in green and white. It is unlikely to be his last.
Norwegian Stefan Johansen —emerging as an increasingly influential player — settled any lingering element of doubt with the third goal in 53 minutes.

Thistle pulled one back through substitute Christie Elliott, but two goals in injury time — a second for Stokes and a 27th of the season for Kris Commons — elevated the celebrations of the away support behind the goal.

‘That’s why we’re champions,’ was the cry. It was impossible to argue.

Not since Rangers in 1929 had any team secured the title as early as March. Inevitably, the achievement will be derided by some as evidence of a hopelessly uncompetitive Scottish game.

Yet Bayern Munich’s capture of the German Bundesliga 24 hours earlier showed it is not a trend unique to Scotland.

The real significance of the night for the away support lay in what it might mean in the longer term.

Long into the night, cries of ‘10-in-a-row’ drifted high into the Glasgow air. With Rangers in a state of flux and Hearts on their knees, such a feat hardly seems improbable.

One more title will make Lennon only the third manager in Celtic history to reach four, after Willie Maley and Jock Stein. It is hard — impossible, even — to see who might stop him.

It won’t be Partick Thistle. At 3-0 down, the home team created their best chances, finally testing Fraser Forster. Substitute Elliott scored his goal with five minutes left. That they played their best stuff with the game already gone is the story of their season.

Only two points separate Alan Archibald’s side from St Mirren, the eleventh-placed team currently occupying the play-off place.

Not until the final moments did they look outclassed, however, even ending the first half the better team. Yet the loss of such an early goal leant an inevitability to what would follow. Emilio Izaguirre cut in to cross the ball with his less favoured right foot towards the back post where Stokes stood completely unmarked.

The Irishman headed the ball firmly past Paul Gallacher for 1-0.

In the Sky studios behind the goal, the league championship trophy glistened in the window. It seemed Celtic would make short work of shipping it back across Glasgow before half-time.

Only three times before in this old club’s history had they won three successive titles. Expectations of a fourth took a little longer to be secured than anticipated.

At Kilmarnock two years ago, Lennon’s side scored early and produced a rampant, confident, flowing performance. They initially failed to repeat the trick here.

After opening the scoring they gave the impression of a team who thought the job was done. Most people did.

The expectation was that Archibald’s team might fold, as they have done so often at home this season. Instead they showed a spirit and endeavour few expected. Yet they created little or nothing in the way of solid goalscoring opportunities until the game was utterly lost.

They succeeded, however, in sucking Celtic into a dogged midfield battle in the first 45 minutes. Lennon’s anger when Charlie Mulgrew earned a booking for chopping down Lyle Taylor after Efe Ambrose dithered on the touchline said it all. Celtic, frankly, needed a bit more.

Forster had precious little to do. Yet neither did Gallacher in the Thistle goal.

The home side’s efforts reminded Celtic there was still a job to be done. Still a title to win.

A change at half-time was key to finishing the job.

A hamstring strain for Matthews forced the introduction of young Henderson, with Ambrose moving to right-back. What a pivotal moment that proved for the teenager, his thumping finish four minutes into the second half settling any uncertainty.

A Johansen cross from the left touchline was dummied by Commons, then Leigh Griffiths, and ran through for the young midfielder to thud the ball firmly into the bottom corner for his first Celtic goal.

Within minutes it was 3-0. The instigator of the second goal, Johansen, was the scorer of the third, surging into the 18-yard box and thrashing a low, left-foot shot past Gallacher.

There was no scope for doubt. No reason to delay the inevitable. After 53 minutes, Celtic were the champions and there was no more Thistle could do to resist.

Typically, they played their best stuff in the minutes after the game was hopelessly lost.

Gary Fraser’s 25-yard shot forced Forster into a sprawling save at his left-hand post before Taylor’s point-blank header fell into the arms of the English keeper moments later.

Stephen O’Donnell then cut inside and thrashed a left-foot fizzing effort which Forster saved with his chest.

Griffiths and Stokes had ‘goals’ chalked off by a linesman’s flag before Thistle sub Ellliott rattled home a fine strike from a long Aaron Taylor-Sinclair pass with five minutes to play. It was a mere exercise in tokenism.

Celtic were not done yet. Stokes would have his second in injury time, rattling a rising shot into the top postage-stamp corner from 12 yards.

Commons even had time to add a fifth, slamming the ball through Gallacher’s legs after substitute Georgios Samaras broke clear and teed him up.

If the margin of the scoreline was mildly flattering, the same can hardly be said of a third successive title.

Dynamo captain Gusev is heroically saved from swallowing his tongue... by rival Dnipro player Kankava

Dynamo Kiev captain Oleg Gusev was heroically saved by an opposition player after a horrific clash during a Ukrainian Premier League match against Dnipro.

The 30-year-old was knocked unconscious after competing for a cross with keeper Denys Boyko and appeared in severe danger of swallowing his tongue before Dnipro midfielder Jaba Kankava intervened.

Gusev was left sprawled on the turf after getting an accidental knee to the face, but Kankava reacted first by forcing his hand down the player's throat to clear his airways.

Medical officials soon joined the throng of players trying to save the Ukraine international before Gusev eventually recovered and left the field on a stretcher.

Kankava can be seen nursing his hand after the incident, possibly from being unintentionally bitten, before being thanked by Dynamo players for his fast acting bravery.

It's in the can! Messi, RVP, Wilshere and Co get in the carnival mood to film Pepsi's interactive World Cup advert

As the World Cup draws closer, expect to see ever more footballers gracing your television sets baring products from Brazilian locations - although few can boast the same array of world class talent as Pepsi MAX.

The soft drinks company has teamed up with Lionel Messi, Robin van Persie, Jack Wilshere, Sergio Aguero, Sergio Ramos and David Luiz for an interactive advert set around the streets of Rio de Janiero that will be aired in 100 countries around the world.

The admittedly thin storyline follows a youngster, also known as 'digital beat sensation Stony', around the famous city while he brushes shoulders with elite footballers and rising songstress Janelle Monae before returning to a fiesta on the dirt pitch he began his 'journey'.

Armed only with a can of Pepsi and pair of drumsticks, Stony interrupts Messi's morning read, conjures a tune from Aguero and Luiz's bottles, fails in a kickabout with Wilshere and abandons his ball with Ramos.

He also spares some change for Monae who is seen busking while singing the advert's anthem, Heroes by David Bowie.

There are around 11 interactive icons, which unlock alternative strands to the simple story that include Messi being mobbed by adoring fans, Aguero introducing the hapless narrator to some carnival girls, Ramos signing a ball with your name on and behind-the scenes-footage.

Argentina Captain Leo Messi commented: 'Pepsi celebrates the passion and energy of football fans. It is a mesmerizing anthem, uniting us all – on the street or on a pitch – in a celebration of the moment.'

'I was honored to join Pepsi for this campaign and remind people that now more than ever, we can all be heroes,' added Monae.

Fourteen yellow cards, two reds and just one goal... Mancini masterminds Gala victory in fiery Istanbul derby

Galatasaray kept their Super Lig title hopes alive with a win over 10-man Fenerbahce in the fiery Istanbul derby.

Wesley Sneijder's ninth minute strike was enough for Roberto Mancini side to win the game in which there were 14 yellow cards and two reds.

Mancini's faltering side had lost its previous five games in all competitions and faced a Fenerbahce side riding high on the back of four successive wins.

That'll do it: Galatasaray's Wesley Sneijder celebrates scoring the winner

Big game player: Fenerbahce's Dirk Kuyt challenges Galatasaray's Didier Drogba

Derby delight: Roberto Mancini reacts during Galatasaray's win over Fenerbahce

But with Didier Drogba once again proving to be a big game player – Galatasaray proved worthy winners.

Sneijder netted the winning goal after nine minutes and that was all Galatasaray needed as Fenerbahce’s hopes foundered on Emre's 40th-minute dismissal.

Galatasaray finished the game with 10 men too, after Felipe Melo saw red late on, but it did not prevent it moving up to second and seven points behind Fenerbahce.

While the result is unlikely to derail Fenerbahce title charge it does give Mancini’s men the bragging rights.

Barcelona stars earn £25m over five years... more than the average pay of any other team in world sport!

* New report shows average first-team Barcelona player has earned £25million over the past five years
* Players who sign five-year deals with elite clubs are set for life
* Barcelona rivals Real Madrid have paid the second most on average
* Liverpool, LA Lakers and the Boston Red Sox - owned by John W Henry;s Fenway Sports Group - make the top 20

Barcelona are out of the Champions League and far from a shoo-in for the La Liga title but at least even the average players in the Nou Camp squad are unlikely to worry about money ever again.

A new report on global pay in sport has found an average first-team Barca player has earned £24,995,540 over the past five years, which is more than the average five-year pay at any team in world sport.

The eye-watering sums on offer in elite European football and in the major sports leagues of America effectively mean that a single five-year deal should provide enough money to set up a player for life.

Big money: The average Barcelona player earns £25million over five years, which is more than the average five-year pay at any team in world sport

Payday: Gareth Bale and his Real Madrid team-mates earn just over half a million less than rivals Barcelona over 5 years

Barcelona’s La Liga rivals have paid the next most on average in the past five years: £24.4m per player on average, followed by the New York Yankees of Major League baseball (£23.6m) and then Manchester City (£20.8m) and Chelsea (£20.4m) of the Premier League.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool all make it into the top 20 alongside globally famous teams such as the LA Lakers of the NBA and the Boston Red Sox baseball team - who are owned, like Liverpool, by John W Henry’s Fenway Sports Group.

The numbers are published today as part of the Global Sports Salaries Survey (GSSS) produced for ESPN The Magazine in the USA. The report looks solely at earnings for playing sport, not for endorsements or other extra-curricular activities.

The five-year earnings list highlights some counter-intuitive findings, including how relatively poorly the average player in the NFL in America is paid. There is a general perception that NFL stars, in an industry awash with cash, all earn bumper pay packets. The reality is a few players on each team earn huge money but many earn ‘only’ hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

As a result, the best paid NFL team over five years, the Dallas Cowboys, appear only at No93 in the five-year list, with an average player earning ‘only’ £7.8m over five years.

The Cowboys are one place below Everton (£7.87m over five years per average player) and 20 places lower than the best paying NHL ice-hockey team, the Chicago Blackhawks (£9.1m per average player over five years).

Owner: The LA Lakers, Boston Red Sox and Liverpool - owned by John W Henry's Fenay Sports Group - all made it into the top 20

R
High five: The average player playing for the New York Yankees earns £23.5m over 5 years

Fall: The LA lakers have seen a decrease in the difference between earnings in 2010 and 2014

Benfica seal Portuguese title for 33rd time to end Porto's three-year dominance

Benfica sealed their 33rd Portuguese league title by beating bottom side Olhanense 2-0 after two goals by Lima on Sunday, bringing an end to FC Porto's three-year run at the top.

Benfica won their first domestic title since 2009-10 with two games to play after striker Lima scored in the 57th and 60th minutes at the Stadium of Light.

'This is the most important goal of my career,' Lima said about his first strike. 'I am so grateful to everyone. This is the highlight of my professional life.'

Benfica secured the title by winning 11 straight games in the league, and can now turn their attention to winning more silverware this season.

Benfica have also reached the final of the Portuguese Cup, and the semi-finals of the Europa League and Portuguese League Cup.

Benfica and Porto have monopolised the league title since Sporting Lisbon last won it in 2001-02.

Sporting guaranteed a second-place finish and an automatic Champions League berth by winning 1-0 at Belenenses on Saturday.

Fenerbahce wrap up 19th league title win in front of 50,000 women and children

Fenerbahce clinched their 19th Turkish league title in unusual circumstances as they played out a goalless draw in front of more than 50,000 women and children.

Adult males were banned from the game against Caykur Rizespor - which saw Fener secure the trophy three weeks before the end of the season - following crowd trouble

But thousands of fans took to the streets to celebrate, waving flags and singing songs while fireworks were seen exploding all over the Bosphorus strait.

'It's really a very special moment in my life. It's a great victory, not only for me but the whole club,' said Fenerbahce forward Dirk Kuyt, before referring to the match-fixing case hanging over the club: 'We are experiencing truly special feelings after all the club went through.'

It was the first league title of the 33-year-old Holland striker's career after spells with Liverpool and Dutch clubs Utrecht and Feyenoord.

Fenerbahce chairman Aziz Yildirim faces a probable return to prison after his appeal against a conviction for match-fixing was rejected by a top court this month.

Coach Ersun Yanal, in his first year in charge of Fener, secured the title thanks to the outstanding performances of African strikers Emmanuel Emenike and Moussa Sow.

'I am very proud of the team and thank everyone, especially our chairman. We showed once again that Fenerbahce is pure and strong,' Yanal told reporters.
It was Fenerbahce's first league title since the match-fixing scandal broke in 2011.

Stiliyan Petrov addresses Celtic supporters as WAGs, crying baby and big dog celebrate another Scottish Premiership trophy

* Celtic beat Dundee United 3-1 on final day of season
* Anthony Stokes, Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons score for Bhoys
* Petrov and John Hartson address Celtic Park crowd

All the elements required for a proper party were present and correct at Celtic Park. Amid the tickertape and the fireworks, and in front of heroes old and new, Neil Lennon’s side signed off their season with little touches of class.

Parkhead resounded to the celebration of three-in-a-row long before Scott Brown hoisted the Premiership trophy high above his head. With 102 goals scored and 99 points amassed – 20 more than last season – this has been about as convincing a title defence as it is possible to stage.

Many of the reasons why were on display as Dundee United were vanquished to ensure the optimum atmosphere in which to toast another triumph.

The resistance of the Tannadice side was broken by a 21st goal of the season for Anthony Stokes, who has been a key element of the Celtic attack. Even more prolific has been double Player of the Year award winner Kris Commons, so it was fitting he should net the final goal of their campaign to hoist his personal tally to a remarkable 32.

In between, there was time for the distribution of a leaving gift. Having emerged from the bench to win a penalty, Georgios Samaras was handed the honour by regular taker Commons. He made no mistake to draw an individual ovation from the crowd that appeared to leave him with tears in his eyes. The Greek international is out of contract and claims he is departing after six-and-a-half years because of the lack of a formal offer from the Celtic hierarchy.

An unfortunate own goal from Filip Twardzik was the only small negative during the match, but it was rendered irrelevant by the time John Hartson and Stilian Petrov emerged to lead the presentation party after full-time.

Both men, who have fought serious health issues, are former team-mates of Lennon from the days when Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan filled the manager’ s role. The current incumbent has now joined Strachan, Jock Stein and Willie Maley in an elite band of Celtic bosses to have won three successive championships. With a sea of green flags swaying in the stands, Lennon was given a cheer as loud as any.

United, of course, hope to have a party of their own back here on Saturday. And their team selection was hugely influenced by that impending date with destiny in the Scottish Cup final against St Johnstone.

Andrew Robertson, Nadir Ciftci, Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong all started on the bench as Jackie McNamara gave vital legs some additional rest before a game that could define their season.

Lennon changed more than half of his side following the midweek 3-3 draw with St Johnstone, but that was a case of restoring Celtic far closer to full strength. The only real surprise was a first start since September 2012 for Czech youngster Twardzik, who was asked to slot in at left-back.

All in the Parkhead side wore black armbands in memory of little Oscar Knox, the five-year-old Celtic fan who passed away earlier this week after a two-and-a-half year battle against an aggressive form of cancer.

A tribute to his all-too-short life formed a profoundly poignant prelude to the celebrations which followed. Oscar’s image was displayed on the giant screens inside Parkhead before kick-off as the ground reverberated to a heartfelt rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

On the field, the game developed at a decidedly end-of-season pace. Celtic carried the greater threat and their first real opportunity arrived when Leigh Griffiths escaped down the left flank and tried to catch out Radoslaw Cierzniak at a tight angle. The Polish goalkeeper was, however, wise to his intentions and turned the ball behind for a corner.

United sought to maximise their counter-attacks and might well have snatched the lead after 20 minutes. Ryan Gauld advanced into central space in front of the home penalty area, all the time glancing to his right to see Ryan Dow charge forward in support. Gauld’s pass was perfectly weighted but, rather than strike first-time, Dow took a touch that enabled Efe Ambrose to block out any real danger.

Griffiths and Stokes continue to lurk with menace for the remainder of the opening period but couldn’t produce anything that caused Cierzniak excessive concern. Shots from awkward positions and distance were often the end product.

Things were even quieter for Fraser Forster, but United finally drew him into action five minutes after the restart. Mark Wilson, back on his old stomping ground, worked a short corner routine with Dow before sending Stefan Johansen the wrong way with a nimble dummy. That opened the way for a low shot that Forster pushed out, with the goalkeeper then relieved to see Farid El Alagui spoon the rebound too high.

Griffiths had the ball in the other net seconds later, only for an offside flag to truncate his celebrations. It was his final act before being replaced by Samaras with 30 minutes remaining.

All of a sudden, Celtic seemed to find greater potency. Charlie Mulgrew burst clear of a trio of Tannadice players nipping at his ankles before picking out Commons. He surged forward to angle in a drive that Cierzniak denied at his near post.

Then, on 64 minutes, the breakthrough arrived as Celtic made it into treble figures for Premiership goals. Commons whipped in a deep delivery from the right that found the United centre-backs wanting. It was too high for Samaras but Stokes was right behind him to head into the far corner of the net.

The visitors tried to stage a swift response. Armstrong, on for Dow, was fluid as he moved in from the left, but his low attempt from the fringe of the area was expertly tipped wide by Forster.

Instead, McNamara’s men found themselves two down with 14 minutes to go as Samaras offered up a little souvenir of his Celtic career. A poor touch from Armstong allowed Stokes to gather and thread a pass in the direction of the Greek. He did superbly to win a sliding challenge with Gavin Gunning before being toppled as he tried to round Cierzniak.

Samaras took the penalty himself – amid chanting of his name - and calmly planted it in the net.

United briefly threatened a comeback when a cutback from Mackay-Steven was deflected past Forster by the unfortunate Twardzik.

Celtic, though, restored their two-goal advantage with nine minutes remaining. A slip by Keith Watson left Commons clean through and his casual dink beyond Cierzniak was confirmation of a player at the peak of his powers.

David James bankrupt! Former England keeper skint despite earning £20m

* James played for Watford, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, West Ham and Portsmouth
* Goalkeeper also won 53 caps for England
* James built up debts after his divorce in 2005
* The 43-year-old filed debtor's petition to Hertford County Court
* James now works as a pundit for BT Sport

David James has been declared bankrupt after blowing his £20million fortune from the game.

The former England keeper filed a debtor’s petition at Hertford County Court last Friday after building up massive losses.

James, 43, spent most of his career at the highest level of the game with Liverpool, Manchester City and England.

Incredibly his costly divorce from wife Tanya in 2005 is being cited as one of the reasons behind his decision to file for bankruptcy.

National service: David James made 53 appearances for England between 1997 and 2010

Wise words: James (right) now works as a football pundit for BT Sport

After finishing his career James moved into television and has been working for BT Sport this season as one of the studio analysts at Barclays Premier League matches.

Despite his contract with BT, James has been unable to prevent the banks forcing him to accept that his finances are in a desperate position.

He is currently taking his coaching badges and hopes to gain his UEFA ProLicence as part of his plans to go into management.

But the sport will be shocked by his precarious finances because he was always presented as the thinking man’s footballer during his playing career.

James, who began his career with Watford in the Eighties, always came across as a studious and controlled character during his hugely successful spells with a number of clubs.

The former England keeper has written a regular column for The Observer over the years and has always donated his fee to charity.

Given his dire financial situation he may be forced to revise that altruistic decision as he looks to the future.

He went on to play for England and kept goal against Germany in the second round defeat at the 2010 World Cup in Blomfoentein.

Until the revelations, no-one inside the James circle was aware of the desperate financial situation that forced him to Hertford County Court.

Although James will be discharged from bankruptcy in a year, he has blown a fortune from his career with some of the top clubs in English football.

Despite a shaky start when he moved to Liverpool, he restored his reputation and went on to play for Aston Villa, West Ham and Portsmouth.

When he played for Pompey, he was rumoured to be driving to training in an eco-friendly car that ran on linseed oil.

But His personal life went into meltdown when he left his wife Tanya in 2005 and was forced to pay her £3m as part of their divorce settlement.

He left her to rekindle a relationship with his childhood sweetheart Amanda Salmon and they have been together ever since.

They have been together for a decade and James intends to pursue his new career in television and coaching as part of his recovery.

He has yet to talk publicly about his experience and his PR team have also declined to comment.

Roberto Mancini in pole position for vacant Italy job after Cesare Prandelli resigned

* Mancini is currently out of work after leaving Galatasaray earlier this summer
* Dismal World Cup campaign led to Prandelli's resignation on Tuesday
* Italian FA keen to talk with Mancini, who is believed to be their main target

Roberto Mancini is emerging as a leading contender to become next Italy manager.

The Azzurri have begun the search for Cesare Prandelli's replacement after the 56-year-old resigned following their early World Cup elimination.

And Sportsmail understands former Manchester City chief Mancini is in the running to take over from Prandelli.

First choice: Italian FA wish to speak with Mancini about succeeding Prandelli, who resigned on Tuesday

Mancini is out of work following his departure from Galatasaray earlier this summer.

And the Italian FA, at the very least, want to discuss the prospect of becoming the country's next head coach with Mancini.

The Italian had only been in charge at Galatasaray for nine months, but left with a £3.2million payoff after failing to impress.

Resignation: Prandelli, who resigned on Tuesday, ran out of ideas during Italy's poor World Cup campaign

He led the club to the Turkish Cup but could only finish second in the league, which ultimately led to his downfall.

But Mancini coud now be handed an instant route back into the game with the Italian national team.
