Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United 1-2 Sheffield United

Man United were 'DOUR and LIFELESS' as they blew chance to go top with shock defeat by Sheffield United, says Rio Ferdinand, who insists 'inconsistency doesn't win the league' and blasts Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic for their roles in winner

* Rio Ferdinand hits out at Manchester United after the defeat by Sheffield United
* Red Devils were shockingly beaten by the Blades who are bottom of the table
* The club's iconic defender labelled their performance as 'dour and lifeless'
* Ferdinand singled out Anthony Martial and Matic for the Blades' winning goal

Rio Ferdinand has blasted Manchester United's 'dour and lifeless' performance after they were beaten by Premier League basement boys Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men went into the game in fine form and were riding high after knocking arch-rivals Liverpool out of the FA Cup in emphatic fashion last weekend.

Their run has put them into the title picture and a win at Old Trafford on Wednesday would have moved them back above rivals Manchester City to the summit of the Premier League table.

Rio Ferdinand has blasted Manchester United for their 'lifeless' display against Sheffield Utd

However, in what is the shock result of the season so far, United slumped to a 2-1 defeat by Chris Wilder's Blades, who have been rooted to the bottom of the table since the opening day in what is the worst start to a Premier League season by any team before.

And Ferdinand didn't hold back when asked for his assessment of his former club after the defeat at Old Trafford.

'They didn't have that zip about them. From minute one, really, there wasn't that cut and thrust we've seen from United,' Ferdinand told BT Sport after the final whistle.

'Credit Sheffield United, Chris Wilder set them up very well, but United didn't ask the questions. Bruno Fernandes, who they've relied on so heavily in recent weeks, months, didn't get it going today. Paul Pogba the same.

High-flying United fell to a shocking 2-1 defeat by the Blades at Old Trafford on Wednesday. It was the visitors' second league win of the season, which left Ferdinand perplexed at full time

'If anybody was starting to get carried away at Old Trafford, with the position that they're on, it was a reality check. I think recently Man Utd, in terms of reaction, have been brilliant but tonight it seemed to come crumbling down.

'Rashford and Martial were invisible, didn't get on the end of anything, didn't create anything.

'It was was dour and lifeless. Inconsistency doesn’t win the league and inconsistency of individuals is holding them back. Let’s not get carried away. They need to focus and get going again – it’s not the end of the world.'

Kean Bryan opened the scoring in a first half in which Martial saw an equaliser ruled out for an apparent foul by Harry Maguire on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Maguire did eventually find a leveller in the second half but Solskjaer's comeback kings floundered rather than rallied.

Ferdinand took aim at Anthony Martial (right) and Nemanja Matic's (left) defensive displays

The Blades capitalised on some atrocious defending as substitute Oliver Burke struck home off of Axel Tuanzebe to seal the win - only their second Premier League triumph of a wretched season.

And Ferdinand took aim at both Martial and Matic for their sub-par defending in the build-up to the Blades' winning goal.

'It's about the reaction, and I want you to see in a minute, Martial, where he ends up when the ball gets around the penalty box for Man United,' Ferdinand added when analysing the goal.

'He ambles back. I want to see a reaction of him sprinting back. Jogging. In yesteryear that doesn't happen. They get back here. Look, there's Martial, two or three passes have gone on he's still jogging back, ambling back. I want to see intensity. Matic should be doing the same.

'And it's not just about Martial. It's not just about him. I could pick a couple out here, and I will. [David] de Gea should clear his lines, get it out of the stadium.

Ferdinand claimed Martial and Matic 'ambled back' before the visitors scored a second. Ferdinand accused Martial of ambling back before the visitors scored the winning goal

'The ball goes to [Lundstram], please, I'm begging you [Matic], get out. Show me your reaction and intensity. Get out and get the ball. He has his hands behind his back which I hate, too.'

Replays show Martial and Matic making minimal effort to recover the ball, leaving Ferdinand flummoxed at the duo's response.

'Martial, please sprint to him. Please go out there and affect the man on the ball. He doesn't,' Ferdinand pleads while analysing the sequence of play. 'Please, Mr Matic. Get out there and affect the ball. This is like two, or three passes on the ground.'

The result means United remain a point behind City, who have a game in hand.

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United 1-2 Sheffield United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left FUMING over Sheffield United's controversial opening goal following Manchester United's shock defeat, insisting that goalkeeper David De Gea was fouled by Billy Sharp in the build up

* Manchester United suffered a shock defeat by Sheffield United at Old Trafford
* The Blades recorded just their second Premier League win of the season
* But controversy reigned as the legitimacy of their opening goal was questioned
* Kean Bryan's header came after an apparent foul on Red Devils' David de Gea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United side lacked ideas to prevent a shock loss by Sheffield United, but was left furious that the Blades' opening goal was allowed to stand.

The Premier League's rock-bottom side stunned the hosts at Old Trafford when they took the lead in the 23rd minute through a Kean Bryan header.

They went on to win 2-1 after Oliver Burke struck a second-half winner rendering Harry Maguire's equaliser inconsequential.

Shortly after the opening goal, United thought they had levelled the game when Anthony Martial rolled the ball home, only for a foul to be given after Maguire was adjudged to have impeded Blades shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale.

Kean Bryan opened the scoring for Sheffield United at Manchester United. But the nature of the goal proved controversial as Billy Sharp appeared to foul David de Gea by pushing him in the back in the moments before the goal was scored

Although, Solskjaer admitted his side lacked a killer instinct to seriously trouble Chris Wilder's team in a poor United display, the Red Devils boss was left fuming that the Blades' goal was allowed to stand and Martial's was not.

'We had all the possession but concede two bad goals, Solskjaer told BT Sport after the game.

'We didn’t create enough. There was no magic, no space to run into. They defended well, fair play to them. We didn’t have the right ideas or solutions.

'First goal? [It's a] foul. Billy Sharp just runs into him [David de Gea] behind him so he can't get up, so it's a foul. At the other end, no foul.'

BT pundits Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch were in agreement with the United boss, with the former Liverpool and Tottenham striker saying the first half decisions in both penalty boxes should not have contradicted each other.

'Sharp had no eyes on ball,' Crouch claimed. 'His remit was to disturb De Gea but it is a foul.

'[At the other end] Harry Maguire has eyes on ball, Sharp didn’t. If you give one, you give the other. Twenty years ago neither was a foul though.

Minutes later, Harry Maguire was deemed to have fouled Sheff Utd keeper Aaron Ramsdale. Although Anthony Martial tucked away the finish, the foul was given before the ball hit the net. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left furious by how the goal was allowed to stand. BT pundits Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch agreed Bryan's goal should not have counted

Ferdinand placed some blame on United keeper David de Gea for his role in the goal but also insisted it was still a foul by Sharp.

'De Gea could do better but I think he is impeded by Billy Sharp who had both hands on De Gea. I think it’s a foul.'

Despite the controversial nature of the two incidents, former referee Peter Walton admitted that VAR could do little about ruling out the first goal as the error was not a clear and obvious decision to overturn.

However on Martial's ruled out effort, Walton spotted that the referee's whistle was blown before the ball had gone in the net, so a check for a goal could not have taken place.

'First instance with Billy Sharp, the ball is in the net. VAR looked at it to see if there was a clear and obvious error. The referee, and I, think there is no clear error,' Walton said.

'On the second one when Harry Maguire goes across Aaron Ramsdale to impede him, the ref blew his whistle before the ball entered the net.

'So VAR couldn’t look at it because VAR would go for a foul and not a goal. We’ve heard about refs and assistant delaying flags and whistles so VAR can look if the ball ends in the net. I think the ref was too sharp on blowing his whistle then.'

'Incredible... the referee will know he's made a mistake': Harry Maguire SLAMS official Peter Bankes for giving a foul against him to deny equaliser after allowing Sheffield United's opener to stand following similar challenge on David De Gea

* Sheffield United shocked Manchester United by sealing a 2-1 win at Old Trafford
* It was only the Blades' second victory of the season in the Premier League
* Harry Maguire has since slammed referee Peter Bankes for his performance
* He claimed Bankes was wrong to disallow United an equaliser with score at 1-0
* Maguire pointed to the visitors' opener, claiming David de Gea had been fouled

Harry Maguire pointed the finger at referee Peter Bankes after Manchester United were stunned by bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Maguire claimed that Bankes was wrong to disallow a United equaliser for his challenge on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, having already allowed the Blades' first goal to stand after Billy Sharp appeared to knock David de Gea.

'It's incredible,' said the United captain who went on to equalise in the second half. 'There's no doubt that Billy Sharp's is more of a foul than what I did. Maybe people will say both aren't fouls, but not David's isn't and that one is.

Harry Maguire was furious after Manchester United had an equaliser ruled out after his challenge on Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

Maguire protests to referee Peter Bankes after United's goal was disallowed at Old Trafford

'I jumped for the ball. I don't think I touched the keeper, he touches me in the back, my arms are nowhere near him. I think the referee will look back and know he's made a mistake.'

His manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also claimed that United were the victims of an injustice, saying: 'The first goal was a foul. Sharp runs into him (De Gea). Other end was no foul. That's two mistakes by the referee.

'The big moments went against us. That's how it is, it's that kind of season – inconsistent and the referee missed those two.'

However, Solskjaer was honest enough to admit that his team didn't do enough as they suffered a shock defeat.

'The second goal we conceded is so poor. We lost the ball easy but we stopped getting out to the ball,' he added. 'We didn't create enough. There was no magic, no space to run into.

Bankes has come in for criticism from United after Wednesday's shock Premier League loss. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also critical of the refereeing performance on Wednesday night

'There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. It's happened, we look at it, agree it is not good enough and go again.'

Blades boss Chris Wilder paid tribute to his players as they celebrated the club's first win at Old Trafford in 38 years.

'The players are jumping about in there and they have every right to, it's been a tough old season,' said Wilder. 'I'm not saying an incredible escape is on but I want to show what we are about.

'It's a long time to wait for a win at Old Trafford and it's a special result, and a special performance. We've talked about big moments and this is one with a touch of luck with the winning goal.

'Phil Jagielka will get a rocket for allowing Harry Maguire to score but he held it together back there.'

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United 1-2 Sheffield United

Anthony Martial going missing, defensive calamities and no idea how to break down teams who park the bus... the old failings Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must fix quickly after shock loss to Sheffield United in order to stop City running away with the title

* Manchester United's title aspirations were given a reality check on Wednesday
* Shock 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield United brought old failings back to the fore
* Defensive errors led to a soft winning goal with several players culpable
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have to swap Anthony Martial for Edinson Cavani
* United again failed to break down packed defence as key players failed to spark
* Solskjaer will have to prioritise competitions with a possible 31 games ahead

Just as Manchester United fans were starting to truly believe a tilt at the Premier League title was on comes the brutal reality check of a home defeat to rock bottom Sheffield United.

After 13 unbeaten matches in the league, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side lost a match everyone expected them to win at a canter, pouring a bucket of cold water on aspirations at Old Trafford.

Not only did they fail to reclaim top spot from Manchester City, who still retain a game in hand, but the shock loss to the Blades threw up a number of old failings from the start of the season everyone thought had been vanquished.

Title-chasing Manchester United were stunned by Sheffield United on Wednesday evening. The Blades recorded a famous victory at Old Trafford as United's title chance took a big blow

Of course, this defeat doesn't end United's chances of winning a first title in eight years but the nature of it would certainly have alarmed Solskjaer as his team slipped well below recent standards.

With Pep Guardiola's City starting to look like their old imperious selves with 11 straight wins in all competitions and a run of 18 unbeaten since late November, these are the issues United must address to stay in the title picture.

Missing Martial

Solskjaer continues to persist with Anthony Martial as his centre forward ahead of Edinson Cavani despite the Frenchman's run of underwhelming form.

Martial has scored only five times in 25 outings this season and last found the net against Aston Villa on New Year's Day, that close range header one of only two Premier League games.

One of his best performances of the season came in the reverse fixture with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane back in December when he scored United's second and then set up Marcus Rashford for another.

Anthony Martial (left) put in another underwhelming performance as he struggles for goals. Rio Ferdinand took aim at 'invisible' Martial (right) and criticised him for not tracking back

But this time around he looked completely lost amid a swarm of light pink shirts as the Blades defence didn't allow him a yard of space to contribute anything.

In the BT Sport studio, United legend Rio Ferdinand described Martial as 'invisible' which is becoming the case in too many games.

Ferdinand also lambasted the striker for not tracking back to cover in defence in the slow motion car crash that was the visitors' winning goal.

Cavani, by contrast, looks far sharper whenever he's on the field. The Uruguayan also has five goals for the season but in six fewer games that Martial. He also has double Martial's tally in the league.

There's a growing case for Edinson Cavani (left) to start games ahead of Anthony Martial

There is an increasing clamour among United fans for Cavani to start games ahead of Martial and with good reason.

Solskjaer may also take the view that a couple of games on the bench for Martial will shake him out of the funk he's been in for most of the season.

Defensive calamity

Falling behind in games is a habit United just haven't been able to kick. Fortunately, in most of them, they're able to mount a stirring comeback to repair the damage.

That didn't happen on Wednesday night thanks in part to Sheffield United's organisational brilliance to keep them at bay and also because of their own calamity at the back.

The winner was the kind of defensive shambles United had worked so hard to get out of their system since the troubled early weeks of the season.

Harry Maguire, David de Gea and Axel Tuanzebe all had opportunities to put the ball into touch before the Blades were allowed all the time in the world to pass the ball back into a shooting position.

The marking was so slack it was as though United's defenders doubted their opponent's capability to score a second goal however close they got.

In the end, Oliver Burke's shot took a deflection off Tuanzebe's knee and went into the roof of the net.

It was a reminder that United are a long way from looking defensively sound even if they are winning matches on a regular basis.

In defence of Tuanzebe, it was his first Premier League start of the season and he wouldn't have been involved had Solskjaer not wanted to rest Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly hadn't taken a knock in training.

But conceding such poor goals could easily cost United any chance of winning the title.

Can't break them down

Credit where credit is due to Sheffield United, who defended brilliantly. Phil Jagielka was one of many who didn't put a foot wrong all night as wave after wave of pressure crashed and rolled back.

With what was essentially a back five and the industrious John Lundstram and John Fleck shielding them, Chris Wilder built a wall of Sheffield steel that Man United's much-vaunted attack couldn't get past.

An inability to break down sides who come and defend deep, especially at Old Trafford, had become a real issue for Solskjaer's side.

But increasingly, they'd been finding ways to break down these massed defences to win all three points, as in the games against West Bromwich Albion, Wolves and Burnley of late.

It's clear Solskjaer has worked hard to address this failing of last season but his player looked totally clueless when crowded out by Sheffield United.

The fact the home side had 16 shots but only four actually on target showed how they started resorting to long range efforts having failed to penetrate the Blades defence. Enjoying 76 per cent possession brought them no joy.

We all know that Solskjaer's United are at their most lethal when up against opponents who attack them, leaving space to counter at speed.

But it could prove to be this failure to break down the lesser opponents that prevents them winning anything. Contrast United on Wednesday night with City's ruthless 5-0 demolition of West Brom 24 hours earlier.

Too reliant on Fernandes and Pogba?

An old chestnut but when Bruno Fernandes - and, of late, Paul Pogba - fail to fire, United look a second class team. Both have been excellent in recent weeks but lacked that spark on Wednesday night and the team as a whole suffered.

Fernandes marks a year as a United player on Friday and what a transformative impact he has had. 28 goals and 18 assists mean he's been involved in 46 goals in 52 games since signing from Sporting Lisbon.

These are incredible returns but the flip side is that United have arguably become a bit too reliant on that Fernandes magic to get them out of holes.

Paul Pogba (left) and Bruno Fernandes (middle) have carried United through in recent weeks

He did it against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday, showing off one of the many strings to his bow by firing home a lovely free-kick to win the game.

Fernandes did slide Mason Greenwood through for a very good chance on Wednesday but most of his evening was spent being crowded out and directed down cul-de-sacs.

Pogba has been improving with every game in the last couple of months, showing the consistency of match-winning form United fans have waited four years for.

But aside from a couple of moments when he danced past two or three players in midfield, he too was muted.

In-form Paul Pogba was kept at bay by Sheffield United during a quiet performance

Other players will need to step up and provide that spark. Martial and Greenwood are two that spring to mind. We may also see more of Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata and Daniel James as the season progresses.

As the ultimate super sub, Solskjaer knows better than anyone that everyone gets their moment in a long, hard season and must be ready to seize their chance. It can't always be the same players making the difference.

It's time to prioritise

Continuing that theme of everyone playing their part, the season is about to get very hectic for United.

They travel to Arsenal for the teatime kick-off on Saturday, then host Southampton next Tuesday before a home game with Everton that may be moved forward because of the midweek FA Cup fifth round date with West Ham.

The week after that, United pick up their UEFA Europa League campaign with a testing last-32 assignment against Real Sociedad.

Quote:
Man United fixtures

Premier League unless stated

Saturday Arsenal (A)

Tuesday Southampton (H)

TBC Everton (H)

TBC West Ham (H)

FA Cup fifth round

February 13 West Brom (A)

February 18 Real Sociedad (A)

Europa League last 32, first leg
Solskjaer will always maintain that United enter every competition to win it but the reality is his squad lacks the depth of quality to compete properly on all three fronts.

It simply isn't feasible for the likes of Fernandes, Pogba, Rashford and Maguire to play every single game between now and the end of the season. This isn't 1999.

United will face another 18 Premier League games - almost half a season's worth - a possible four more FA Cup games and possible nine Europa League fixtures between now and the end of May.

So Solskjaer needs to prioritise and it's a tricky one because the feeling persists he needs to win a trophy to really make his mark as United boss.

The FA Cup is probably his best bet as it's less arduous than the Europa League but the Premier League is obviously more important than both.

If United still find themselves in the title picture by the time they meet Sociedad, it may be prudent to ring the changes for the European games and keep the main players fresh for league fixtures.

Solskjaer must think pragmatically even though his heart will tell him United should try and win it all.
