Peace Cup Final Preview: Juventus - Aston Villa
The two best sides of the Peace Cup will fight for the title on Sunday, as Juve take on Aston Villa...

2 Aug 2009 00:44:01

Brilliant Bianconeri

The 2009 Peace Cup has brought a whole host of top class teams together, but in truth, Juventus have been a cut above the rest. Going into the final, they remain the only team with a perfect record, having dispatched of Sevilla, Seongnam Ilhwa and Real Madrid respectively. While some of the other teams have left the tournament with more questions than answers, Juve look set for their best season in recent memory.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect for The Old Lady has been the seamless transition that the three major new signings have made into the team. Fabio Cannavaro already looks a far more assured figure than he ever did at the Bernabeu, even managing to score against his former club after just three minutes. Meanwhile, Diego has got his first goal (although he has since got injured), while Felipe Melo has been solid in midfield.

The 2-1 win over Real Madrid, their third against Los Merengues in the last year, confirmed that Juve will be a force to reckon with this season. With Martin Caceres and perhaps others still to join, things can only get better. They appear to be peaking at just the right time, which can only be bad news for Aston Villa.

Just Enough

In contrast to Juve, Aston Villa's progress to the final has been quite complicated, but no-one can deny that they deserve to be there. After a disappointing 1-0 loss to Malaga in their opening match, they battled to beat Atlante 3-1, topping the group on goal difference in the process. A clinical 2-1 win over Porto then ensured that they would make the showpiece occasion on Sunday.

There have certainly been some obstacles along the way, not least Stilliyan Petrov's injury and Emile Heskey's sending off in the last game, but Villa's determination will certainly have pleased Martin O'Neill. With the Premier League season inching ever closer, time is running out for side's to finalize their preparations. Regardless of the final result, O'Neill will surely feel that the Peace Cup has provided plenty of positives for his side.

Therefore, the match against Juventus is clearly Villa's most important thus far. For a side with genuine designs on breaking into the "Top Four", it should provide a fair gauge of their current level. Expect a close contest, for as Martin O'Neill's touchline antics against Atlante proved, Villa are ready to take on anyone.

FORM GUIDE

Juventus

Jul 31 Juventus 2-1 Real Madrid (Peace Cup)

Jul 28 Juventus 3-0 Seongnam (Peace Cup)

Jul 25 Malaga 1-0 Aston Villa (Peace Cup)

Jul 21 Colchester 2-2 Aston Villa (Friendly)

TEAM NEWS

Juventus

Claudio Marchisio, Momo Sissoko, Paolo De Ceglie and Diego are all unavailable.

Probable Starting XI - Buffon - Grygera, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Salihamidzic - Tiago, Melo, Camoranesi, Giovinco - Amauri, Del Piero

Aston Villa

Stilliyan Petrov is injured, while Emile Heskey is suspended.

Probable Starting XI - Friedel - Shorey, Cuellar, Davies, Lichaj - Albrighton, Sidwell, Reo-Coker, Bannan - Young, Carew

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Juventus - Having worked his way back to full fitness, Felipe Melo will be ready to show what he is made of, and can be expected to make life very tough for the Villa midfield.

Aston Villa - In the absence of Heskey, much of the attacking burden will fall upon Ashley Young, who will want to prove himself against one of Europe's best teams.

PREDICTION

Aston Villa have made life difficult for everyone in this tournament, so it should be a close contest. However, Juventus have been the best side thus far, and should have enough to lift the trophy.

Juventus 3-1 Aston Villa

Victory Against Real Madrid Was A Sign Of Things To Come - Del Piero

The Bianconeri can compete for the Scudetto, according to Juventus legends past and present...

2 Aug 2009 09:08:43
While Juventus have the Peace Cup final to look forward to tonight, Alessandro Del Piero is still thinking about the victory against Real Madrid and the connotations that it could have for the season ahead.

"The result is relative, but these are signs," he enthused, according to Goal.com Italia.

With some strong signings so far, as well as their promsing 2-1 victory against the Merengues, Juventus are looking in good shape for the year ahead.

After a summer in which the Old Lady have splashed out on Diego and Felipe Melo, expectations are mounting on the club and their rookie coach Ciro Ferrara.

And Del Piero's optimism was shared by two former Bianconeri stars, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Pierluigi Casiraghi.

"They [Juventus] are favourites, in my opinion," Ravanelli revealed.

"They have lots of options in every position."

Casiraghi, now Italy's Under-21 coach, added that the gap between Inter and Juventus has "certainly decreased".

I Am 100 Per Cent Sure I Will Stay With Juventus - David Trezeguet
'Trezegol' has announced that he will stay with Juventus for the foreseeable future...

3 Aug 2009 09:19:14

After Juventus' defeat in the Peace Cup final against Aston Villa, David Trezeguet admitted that he could not turn his back on the Bianconeri ahead of a promising season.

"I will remain 100 per cent with Juventus for the whole season," he told the club's official website.

"After nearly ten years in Turin, it did not seem right for me to go just now. I was helped to make this decision by everyone who has been close to me recently: the management; the coach; my team-mates; and the fans."

Ciro Ferrara explained that the decision came in the wake of the Bianconeri's defeat last night.

"I am happy for David, as at the end of the game he wanted to talk to me and the team, announcing that he intends to stay with us," the coach revealed.

An injury had ruled Trezeguet out for much of last season and he was unable to replicate his previous form in the Bianconeri shirt, but is hoping for a trouble-free season next year under Ferrara.

The 31-year-old striker had been strongly linked with a transfer away from the club this summer, most notably to Milan.

Buffon: Terima Kasih, Trez!
Selasa, 4/8/2009 | 02:22 WIB

Works at the Juventus Center according to plans
The Juventus Center in Vinovo is about to come back to life. After two months from the last training session (30th May, the eve of the match against Lazio), the tea, is nearly ready to get back. It will do so on Wednesday afternoon, once again with Ciro Ferrara at the helm.

The word “works” has been very current recently. At the Juventus head quarters the project has continued: the construction of two stands for the public to watch the training sessions of the first team and the matches of the youth sector as well as the expansion of the dressing rooms area.

Since the last update of the situation at the beginning of July, the works have continued according to plans.

The stand overseeing pitch number 8 – the synthetic one which last year was named after Alessio Ferramosca and Riccardo Neri – is finished and was inspected in the last few days by the inspectorate commission which will issue the permits for use for the start of the youth tournament entitled “Ale&Ricky sempre nel cuore".

The other stand, the one overseeing the number 1 pitch, one on which Del Piero and company do their daily training sessions, is also progressing well. Both the structure and the parking area adjacent to it are nearly completed.

Everything is going according to the time envisaged even for the dressing rooms area. In time for the return of the first team to Vinovo, the works on the ground floor have been completed while the works to the upper floor are moving fast.

The works will continue even when the sport activities begin. The objective remains that of finishing all the works by mid October, as foreseen in the plans.
