Gary Neville can see no end in sight to the stellar careers of fellow Manchester United veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

As Neville waits to learn whether the one appearance he needs to reach 600 for the Old Trafford outfit will come in the Champions League clash with Rangers tonight, the question of how long his long-time team-mates can go on for has cropped up again.

Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday admitted United would almost certainly need to 'stretch' themselves in the transfer market when the time comes for Giggs and company to call it a day.

Ferguson has not given up hope of getting another two years from those ageing legs, although given his own injury problems, Neville's career seems likely to come to a close first.

Towards the end of last season, Neville felt he was three games away from retirement, only for Ferguson to hand the full-back a new contract.

That same decision had already been made for Giggs and Scholes. And after starting the current campaign in impressive fashion, Neville feels the pair still have plenty of service to give.

'I don't see why Ryan and Paul cannot continue what they are doing given how well they are playing at present,' he said.

'Ryan is 37 in November and I can't see any difference. It is incredible really. I certainly don't see any players better than them.

'They manage themselves brilliantly, on and off the pitch. The manager is looking at 25 to 30 games a season off them now, not 55 so they could play on for another few years.'

MANCHESTER - Manchester City mulai menunjukkan tanda peringatan kepada rivalnya, termasuk Manchester United. Salah satu punggawa The Red Devils, Gary Neville mengakui City sebagai penantang serius di Premier League.

Neville sedikit beralasan. Menurut dia berkibarnya The Citizen dan Chelsea tidak terlepas dari kekuatan dana yang mereka miliki untuk mendatangkan pemain hebat ke dalam klub. Kekuatan United, di bawah dua klub tersebut.

“Saat ini City dan Chelsea di atas kami dari dana yang mereka keluarkan dan kualitas tim yang mereka miliki, itu berarti kami harus melihat kedua tim itu sebagai rival ntuk meraih title,” ujar bek itu. (fit)

Koran Malta Minta Maaf kepada Neville



VALLETTA, KOMPAS.com — Koran Malta, The Sunday Times of Malta, mengaku salah mengutip artikel yang ditulis Gary Neville mengenai polemik transfer Wayne Rooney dan meminta maaf atas itu.

Rooney sempat diberitakan media-media Inggris akan pindah dari Manchester United. Indikasinya adalah alotnya negosiasi perpanjangan kontrak dan keputusan Ferguson menyimpan Rooney dalam sejumlah pertandingan.

Selain itu, polemik juga dipicu oleh perbedaan pendapat Ferguson dan Rooney soal pencadangan itu. Ferguson mengatakan Rooney disimpan karena kurang bugar, sementara Rooney mengaku tak mengalami masalah fisik sama sekali.

Sejumlah klub, termasuk Manchester City, kemudian disebut berminat membeli Rooney.

Polemik akhirnya tersimpulkan ketika MU mengumumkan telah memperpanjang kontrak Rooney untuk lima musim mendatang pada Jumat (22/10/2010).

Neville kemudian menuliskan artikel untuk The Sunday Times of Malta. Artikel itu kemudian dipublikasikan dengan isi sebagai berikut:

"Ketika para pemain top kami menandatangani kontrak jangka panjang, itu memberi kami dorongan moral besar. Wayne bertahan dan sekarang kami ingin berjuang meraih gelar bersamanya di tim kami. Hal utama adalah setelah pekan sulit (polemik transfer Rooney), keputusan terbaik untuk semua pihak tercapai, kecuali mungkin Manchester City...".

Editor The Sunday Times of Malta, Steve Mallia, memberikan koreksi sebagai berikut:

"Mengacu pada kolom Gary Neville di The Sunday Times of Malta pada 24 Oktober, harian ini ingin menjernihkan hal berikut: Tak sekali pun Gary Neville menuliskan frase 'Kecuali mungkin Manchester City'," kata Mallia seperti dikutip Soccernet.

"Kata-kata itu ditambahkan oleh jurnalis yang mengelola kolom tersebut dengan Tuan Neville dan tidak pernah direncanakan untuk muncul dalam versi cetak artikel tersebut."

"Tuan Neville tak menggunakan kata-kata itu dan juga tidak menyinggung Manchester City sama sekali. Kami meminta secara terbuka meminta maaf kepada Tuan Neville atas kesalahan kami dan menyesali terjadinya ketidaknyamanan yang ditimbulkan," papar Mallia. (SCN)

Gary Neville’s style might not be as easy on the eye as some of his fellow Class of ’92 performers. But his steel has been just as important to United’s success as the silk of his more glamorous colleagues.

That’s the opinion of ex-Reds full-back Arthur Albiston.

Neville’s landmark 600th United appearance – at Stoke last Sunday – was an inauspicious occasion and passed without much celebration.

In fact, as he became the fifth member of Old Trafford’s elite band of 600-plus appearance- makers, the event was bathed in controversy.

In lining up at the Britannia Stadium he joined Ryan Giggs, Sir Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes and Paul Scholes in that exclusive group of Reds.

He bagged a yellow card, escape what most saw as a deserved red and was hauled off at half time by Sir Alex Ferguson after referee Andre Marriner said he’d be dismissed if he committed another foul.

That marking of the milestone didn’t do justice to the career of United’s former captain, who made his senior debut against Torpedo Moscow in December 1992.

But while his fellow former FA Youth Cup-winning pals like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham might be the headline stealers, Albiston says Neville has been a vital component of the Reds success.

“Gary Neville has made the right-back position look simple and believe me is not an easy job at,” said Albiston, who tied up Old Trafford’s left-back role for 485 matches in the 70s and 80s.

“He has never tried anything he is not capable of and that is why he makes it look so effortless and straight-forward.

“United, of course, have always been associated with flair players. The crowd absolutely love them. Reds fans adore their wingers, strikers and creative midfielders.

“From Gary’s era you have Giggs, Scholes and Beckham who are all very easy on the eye and watchable. But you cannot have a team without a Gary Neville character in it. He’s been the heartbeat of United. I have always felt a lot more comfortable watching United when Gary is in the side. That’s because you know he is going to be on at his fellow defenders and also the referee. Nobody gets an easy ride.

“You don’t want a quiet defence and sometimes I think without Gary United are a shade too quiet. His organisational skills are vital.

“If you are not naturally vocal then it is difficult, but you have to have a person like Gary with his non-stop chatter on the pitch keeping people alert and focused.

“I think he has said it himself in the past that his ability was natural in the same players like Giggs, Scholes and Beckham’s talents were.

“He had to show determination and fight to make it at Manchester United. But those assets are as important as anything else.

“Eric Harrison was his youth team boss at United and if you talk to him, he’d tell you that if he ever wanted to hold up any player as an example to up-and- coming hopefuls, then it would be Gary Neville.

“His hunger and determination to succeed makes him the number one in that respect.

“I think over the last two or three years, ever since he’s picked up injuries following the ankle ligament damage he suffered playing against Bolton in March 2007, people have appreciated him more.

“You can sometimes value players like Gary more and what they bring to a side after you watch the team without them in it.

“England have not yet replaced him properly and it is not going to be easy for United to replace him long-term when he finally calls it a day.

“Players with his drive and enthusiasm and ability to hold down a place at Old Trafford for over 600 games over a period of 18 years don’t come along every five minutes.”

Manchester United legend Gary Neville set to announce retirement at end of the season



Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville is set to follow Edwin van der Sar into retirement at the end of the season - marking the end of an era at Old Trafford.

Neville, 35, is unlikely to be offered a new deal after being restricted by injury to just three first-team appearances this season.

While Ryan Giggs, who celebrated his 37th birthday last week, and Paul Scholes are enjoying an Indian summer in their careers, Neville’s body is letting him down.

All three are on one-year deals that expire at the end of the season and manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: ‘Ryan is unbelievable at 37. His fitness has not changed.

‘It is different with Gary. We will have to assess him. He has an injury again and it is difficult when you get injuries all the time in your 30s. That is the advantage Ryan has over Gary.’

Neville’s 601 club games puts him fifth on United’s all-time appearances list.

Manchester - Cedera berkepanjangan menghalangi Gary Neville tampil maksimal. Defender Manchester United itu diyakini bakal pensiun di akhir musim ini karena tak akan diberi kontrak baru.

Pada musim ini, Neville memang jarang "kelihatan" di atas lapangan. Sejauh ini baru tiga kali tampil buat MU dengan dua kali menjadi starter. Terakhir kali, ia tampil saat 'Setan Merah' mengalahkan Wolverhampton di Piala Carling, akhir Oktober.

Neville adalah salah satu pemain veteran yang masih dipertahankan oleh timnya. Terlepas dari Edwin Van der Sar yang diduga kuat akan gantung sepatu seusai musim ini, masih ada Paul Scholes dan Ryan Giggs.

Akan tetapi performa Neville bisa dibilang kalah dari dua rekannya itu yang terbukti masih bertaji. Walau baru dapat mencetak satu gol, kehadiran Scholes sempat berkali-kali menjadi inspirator timnya. Sedangkan The Welsh Wizard masih menunjukkan fisik yang oke kendati usianya sudah mencapai 37 tahun.

Seperti yang diketahui, MU cuma memberikan perpanjangan kontrak per satu tahun bagi pemain yang telah berusia 32 tahun. Sementara kontrak Neville akan habis pada musim panas mendatang.

Menurut laporan Daily Mail, kondisi Neville yang demikian tidak memungkinkan bagi dia untuk diberi perpanjangan kontrak baru. Hal ini tersirat dari pernyataan Sir Alex Ferguson beberapa waktu silam.

"Ryan (Giggs) tak dapat dipercaya ia telah berusia 37 tahun sekarang. Tetapi fisiknya belum menurun. Tapi ini berbeda dengan Gary."

"Kami akan memeriksa dia. Dia kembali dibebat cedera dan ini sulit ketika Anda sering dibekap cedera ketika usia Anda sudah mencapai 30an. Hal bagus dari Ryan tak terjadi kepada Gary."

Sejak masuk skuad pada 1992-93, Neville kini memasuki musim ke-19 bersama MU. Sampai saat ini pemain bernama lengkap Gary Alexander Neville itu sudah tampil sebanyak 601 kali atau terbanyak kelima dalam sejarah timnya.
