Ho..ho..ho.., it's May !!!

SIGN UP FOR THE MANCHESTER UNITED FOUNDATION SANTA RUN

Reds legend David May will take part in the Manchester United Foundation’s annual Santa Run when it returns for its 10th year on 4 December.

Ryan Giggs, Bryan Robson and, most recently, Denis Irwin have all previously been involved as official starters of the race in recent years, with the latter joined by 1,700 participants for last year's fundraiser.

Former United defender May - who has been regularly involved in Foundation work since retiring in 2006 - says he's looking forward to taking part in this year's event.

"I can't wait!" he said. "I know Denis did it last year, he joined in and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to it. The Foundation does a wonderful job across Greater Manchester, and for the ex-players to join in, it gives something back to the community.

“I think the good thing about this event is that all charities can benefit. The Santa Run is not just about raising money for the Foundation. Manchester is a great city to be able to bring people together and over the years it goes to show what the people of Manchester are all about; they give their hard-earned money to charities and without that the charities wouldn’t be able to continue the great work they do."

There are two runs to choose from: the main 5k event, which takes begins at Old Trafford before passing the sights of the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry and MediaCityUK, and finishing under the Stretford End; or the 2k Family Fun Run, in which entrants follow the perimeter of the stadium.

Alongside the event, there will be a host of festive activities and entertainment, including a brass band playing Christmas songs, plus a chance for children to visit 'Santa's grotto'. As always, participants can raise money for the Foundation or a charity of their choice.

SANTA RUN IS A GREAT SUCCESS

Former Reds defender David May was at Old Trafford on Sunday to officially start the tenth annual Manchester United Foundation Santa Run.

Over 1,700 Santas turned out on a gloriously sunny day, raising money for over 80 charities and good causes in the process.

Treble-winner May took to the stage on the Old Trafford forecourt at 11:30 to start the 5K Santa Run on a route which took the runners past the sights of the Imperial War Museum, The Lowry and MediaCityUK. Following in the footsteps of United legend Denis Irwin the previous year, May took part in the event himself, joining families in the 2K race before crossing the finish line outside the Theatre of Dreams.

May commented: “The Foundation do an absolutely amazing job, I’ve been involved in a few of their events and it’s great to be here at another one today. It’s an absolutely glorious day for it.”

Other activities taking place around the stadium included a brass band playing favourite festive tunes, the ASH street dance crew performing ahead of each race and Father Christmas giving out early gifts in his grotto.

Having received treatment at The Christie for the last seven years, Charlotte Ward, was one of 320 runners fundraising for the Manchester based cancer charity: "There's a great sense of community spirit about this event and from a personal point of view, I feel a great sense of pride lining up with the runners today, especially my daughter, Isabella.

"It has taken seven years to get to this point and this is the first opportunity I've been able to give something back to The Christie. It's a way of showing my appreciation for all their help and support over the years, through such challenging times. They do an amazing job and I feel very fortunate to have such a specialist centre, with their expert input, involved in my care."

Matchday ball assistants Kelly and Zainab both attend Foundation partner schools and decided to take part in the event. Kelly explained: “The Foundation have given us such brilliant opportunities, to be pitch-side at every match working as a ball assistant is something very special, and this is our way of giving something back.

Celebrating a special tenth anniversary of the festive event, Manchester United Foundation's CEO, John Shiels, said: “For me, Christmas doesn’t start until we do the Santa Run; it’s a great uplifting event.”

He added: “It's great charitable event because it's something people do off their own back, it helps charities raise the funds they desperately need. The charitable sector is really hard at the moment and events like this show Manchester United Foundation giving back to the heart of the local community.”

DAVID MAY: FROM PROMOTION WITH BLACKBURN TO WINE SALESMAN – WHERE IS HE NOW?

David May is a name that will still be remembered incredibly fondly amongst those Blackburn fans above the age of 40.

Graduating through the youth side at Ewood Park, May went on to become an integral member of the Lancashire club on the right-hand side of the defence.

In total, he made over 100 appearances, helping them win promotion to the Premier League and then to a second-place finish, departing to Manchester United in the summer before they went on to lift the title themselves.

He made the move to Old Trafford after contract negotiations broke down and Sir Alex Ferguson swooped in.

In his first campaign, May largely played as a right-back due to injuries throughout the squad, but a string of poor performances towards the end of the campaign meant he lost his place to a certain emerging talent called Gary Neville.

The next two seasons saw him thrust onto the frontline in his preferred centre-back role with Steve Bruce retiring, scoring in a 3-0 victory that clinched the Premier League title as well as starting in the 1996 FA Cup Final against Liverpool.

He had largely dropped out of the starting XI by the time that famous 1998/99 treble-winning season rolled around with Wes Brown and Jaap Stam emerging as preferred options.

After his contract expired in 2003 May was snapped up by Burnley, but his career had largely peaked and he retired three years later with Bacup Borough.

But where is he now?

May initially went down the typical post-footballing route of coaching, taking a role at Bacup before moving to a soccer school in Dubai in 2007.

But more recently he can be found bringing some of the world’s finest wines into Britain from South Africa with a friend, although ended the venture just two years later after falling out with his business partner.

MY FOOTBALL LIFE: DAVID MAY

In the latest edition of our new series, the ex-defender recalls bagging up mud as a youngster, swapping Blackburn for Manchester in '94 and a touching recent tribute from Sir Alex...

Starting out

I remember playing for my school, Boarshaw County Primary School in Middleton, probably at eight or nine. My first pair of boots looked like adidas but they had four stripes! I remember having to put the goals up - no netting, just frames - and the games were a little bit of kick-and-rush back then. I started at left-back, then centre-half, goalkeeper, midfield... I played all the positions. Let's say I was a utility player!

Becoming a player

I was 14 at the time, playing for my town team, Rochdale, when I got spotted by Ted Taylor, who was a scout for Blackburn. He asked me to go for trials at Blackburn. We played on the pitch at Ewood Park against Formby, and I actually scraped the mud and grass off my boots afterwards and kept it all in a bag for a couple of years, because I thought I'd never get the chance to play on a professional pitch again! I really relished the opportunity to make my first appearance on a proper pitch, even though I shouldn't actually have played. It was open age but it was for 15s and over, and I was 14. Anyway, I played and scored what turned out to be the winner. It was a little bit of a near-post shank, but I didn't care.

Joining United

Blackburn played Norwich away and Mark Robins, who was playing for Norwich, told me afterwards that United were there watching me. I spoke to [United scout] Les Kershaw after the game, he was asking me about my contract situation and, because nothing was happening with Blackburn, he asked me how I felt about joining United. It was totally out of the blue, even though I'd been playing well for Blackburn, but that was enough for me. My mind was made up and even if Blackburn had come back and offered me the same money that Alan Shearer was on, I'd still have joined United. When the move to United went through, I was so proud. I was joining the biggest club in the world, they'd just won the Premier League and the FA Cup and I wanted to join a team that was going to go on and win things. That's all I ever wanted to do and I did that. I never for one minute regretted leaving Blackburn.

Favourite season

It would have been 1995/96, winning the Premier League. Blackburn had won it in my first season at United and I was absolutely devastated. I said to myself: It's not happening again. So '95/96, winning the league up at Middlesbrough, scoring the first goal to set us on the way and then beating Liverpool in the FA Cup final. Eric's winner... when I look back at the Liverpool lads in the way, you just wonder how on earth the ball got through them! It wasn't the best Cup final, but it was really because we won! Growing up as a kid and watching most FA Cup finals, to then play in one was fantastic.

Greatest game

Porto at home in 1997 [Champions League quarter-final first leg]. We won 4-0. They actually rested Mario Jardel who was an unbelievable centre-forward for them. They were a powerful team and maybe a few people fancied them ahead of the tie. I scored the opener, then Eric, Coley and Giggsy finished the game and it was surreal. Resting Jardel and thinking they could get through without him, that was a mistake on their part. I still remember my goal vividly. A corner got cleared out to Becks, the cross comes back in, Pally comes over the top of me to head it, the keeper saves it and I sweep it in the roof of the net. In commentary, Ron Atkinson said it was “a Denis Law-type finish,” which I'll take!

Best mate

There wasn't one in particular because they were all good lads. I still see Scholesy now, we still play golf together. We're both from Middleton. I travelled to games with Scholesy, roomed with big Pally, but because everyone got on so well I couldn't just pick out the one.

Proudest moment

Signing for United, with my mum and dad being there. I've got two brothers who both played football, so god knows how many games my parents watched between them, following us around, but signing for United, being in the chairman's office with Sir Alex and Martin Edwards, that made me so proud. Then being in the FA Cup final, looking up at the crowd and seeing your mum and dad and your wife, knowing your brothers are there too. It just made me proud to fulfil not just my dream, but theirs too.

Toughest opponent

Juventus. Zidane, Del Piero, those two - they were never really out-and-out centre-forwards, they just played in a really awkward position. You have to decide whether you go short and tight with them or stay as a solid back four. They were a nightmare to mark. In the Premier League, Shearer's got to be up there. He was absolutely world-class.

International recognition

In 1996/97 Glenn Hoddle was England manager, with John Gorman as his assistant. I got the call, was absolutely delighted, it was the same time that Butty got on to make his debut against Mexico. Being part of that was great, but not making my debut hurt a little bit. Tony Adams, Southgate, Keown, Campbell... there were some top centre-halves so it never happened for me.

Best attributes

I always thought I was a good reader of the game. I wasn't blessed with pace, but I don't think you need that when you can read the game. Sir Alex pulled me to one side after the recent Treble Reunion game and said: “You're still the best centre-half passer of a ball I've ever had,” and I just looked at him. He said: “Honestly, your success rate was so high, it was mad.” So that was a nice little touch from the gaffer!“

Saying goodbye

Yeah, it was tough. I wasn't playing, the gaffer pulled me into his office and said: “Look, you've had your injuries.” Rio was there, Sheasy, Wes and others. I knew it was coming anyway, but to get the call in to say that United were letting me go [in 2003] was really tough. They'd been my family for the last nine years, but I understood what the gaffer was saying. He told me I'd been a great servant and that was that.

United now

I think we're in a transitional period at this moment in time. Now with Ole at the wheel I think we're looking a lot better. Speaking to the staff, seeing how the lads have worked over recent weeks, I think we'll be fine this season. I still see a lot of United because I still work for the club a lot and I'm absolutely loving my time with MUTV.

Former Manchester United man David May admits he 'drank a £200 bottle of champagne with a tramp' before going on a solo 12-day bender in his apartment after struggling to cope with leaving Old Trafford

* David May has given an astonishing insight into football life after being released
* The former full-back struggled immensely after Manchester United let him go
* May has spoken openly on how he embarked on a 12-day bender alone at home
* The 49-year-old ended up 'drinking a bottle of Krug champagne with a tramp'

Former Manchester United defender David May has given a candid and astonishing insight into the struggles he faced after leaving the famous club.

May, who made 85 appearances for United before struggling with injuries, saw his mental health take a crashing blow after he was released by the Old Trafford club.

The hardship became so much for May that he admits drinking expensive bottle of bubbly on a park bench with a homeless person in the early hours of a morning, before embarking on an alcohol-fuelled bender alone at his apartment which lasted 12 days.

The darkness began to creep in when May suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon following United's success-laden 1999 season, and was sent to Huddersfield on loan.

He debuted for the Terriers, hoping to regain his form and work back into the United fold, only to then tear a hamstring on his debut.

After heading back to United and struggling further with injury, May was released by the club following the end of the 2002/03 Premier League campaign. It was at this point, he revealed to the club's official Utd Podcast, that things became bleak.

David May has given a candid insight into his struggles after leaving Manchester United. May, now 49, says he was rocked after being released by United and spiraled into depression

May began: 'I remember driving out of Carrington thinking that's it. What do I do now? I couldn't take it. I just thought that's me done.'

When asked if the tears started to flow, May was forthcoming with his answer.

'I did (cry). I filled up thinking what do I do? My career is over, finished.

'I just went on a 12-day bender on my own in my apartment. We were celebrating (the league title win) but needed to go to bed so I got a bottle of Krug champagne and left (the party).

'This tramp was on a bench in the gardens so I walked over and started chatting. It must have been around one o'clock in the morning.

'Me and this tramp ended up drinking the bottle. I gave him the rest of the bottle and that was the start of my 12-day bender.'

May, who was once called up for England but did not go on to win an international cap, admitted he then realised things were spiraling out of control.

'(The 13th day?) I thought I can't continue to do this. I need to get home. What I'm doing is wrong.

'That was probably the depression that I needed to get out of myself and I did that by drinking.

'I went home, went on holiday, got a call from Burnley and went there for 12 months and then retired. So there you go.'

May won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups with United during his time at Old Trafford, and was an unused substitute during the historic 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in Barcelona.
