Mauricio Roberto Pochettino Trossero (Spanish pronunciation: [mauˈɾisjo potʃeˈtino tɾoˈseɾo], Italian: [poketˈtino tɾosˈseɾo]; born 2 March 1972) is an Argentine former footballer who played as a central defender, and the current manager of English club Tottenham Hotspur.

He spent 17 years as a professional player, ten of which were in La Liga with Espanyol where he scored 13 goals in 275 games.[1] He also played in France for two clubs, Paris Saint-Germain and Bordeaux, having started his career with Newell's Old Boys.

An Argentine international for three years, Pochettino represented the country at the 2002 World Cup and the 1999 Copa América. He began his managerial career at Espanyol in January 2009, remaining in the post for nearly four years. He then managed in the Premier League, with Southampton and Tottenham.

In late January 2009, Pochettino became Espanyol's third coach in 2008–09, with the team ranking third from bottom[11] but eventually finishing the season comfortably placed (10th), after the coach inclusively asked for "divine intervention".[12] He coached nine players who were his teammates during his last year and, in early June, renewed his link for a further three years.

In 2009–10, Pochettino once again led Espanyol to a comfortable league position, in a campaign where club symbol (and his former teammate) Raúl Tamudo fell completely out of favour in the squad's rotation, even more after the January 2010 arrival of the manager's compatriot Dani Osvaldo. On 28 September 2010, he agreed to an one-year extension at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat which ran until 30 June 2012, and in May of the following year further renewed his contract until 2014; on 26 November 2012, however, following a 0–2 home loss against Getafe CF that left the Pericos in last place with just nine points from 13 matches, it was terminated by mutual consent.

Southampton[edit]
On 18 January 2013, Pochettino was announced as the new first-team manager of Premier League club Southampton, replacing Nigel Adkins and becoming the second Argentine manager in English football after Osvaldo Ardiles.[19] His first match in charge was five days later, a 0–0 draw against Everton at St Mary's Stadium;[20][21] he recorded his first win on 9 February, 3–1 at home over reigning champions Manchester City.

Despite knowing English, Pochettino initially used a Spanish interpreter in press conferences, as a way to fully express his views.[23] He led the Saints to notable victories against other top league sides, including a 3–1 home win over Liverpool[24] and a 2–1 success against Chelsea also at St Mary's.[25]

In his first full season at Southampton, Pochettino was able to equal their greatest ever league finish of eighth, while also surpassing their highest ever points tally in the process.

Tottenham Hotspur
On 27 May 2014, Pochettino was appointed head coach of Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract, becoming their tenth manager over a twelve-year span.[27] The following 28 January, the team reached the final of the Football League Cup following a 3–2 aggregate win over Sheffield United, only to be beaten 2–0 by Chelsea in the decisive game at Wembley Stadium. In the domestic league, his first season was generally successful, ending in a fifth-placed finish and the conversion of several young academy graduates into regular first team players; he put one of those graduates, Harry Kane, as starting striker at the expense of Spanish international Roberto Soldado, a gamble which paid off[28] as Kane and his teammates Dele Alli and Eric Dier were touted as the potential basis for England's team at UEFA Euro 2016.

Tottenham were in contention to win the league in 2015–16, but on 2 May 2016 they drew 2–2 at Chelsea, handing the title to Leicester City. The game at Stamford Bridge saw the Spurs receive a league record nine yellow cards, and Pochettino entered the pitch in the first half to separate his left back Danny Rose from a confrontation with Willian.

Managerial style[edit]
Pochettino favoured a very high-pressing, attacking style of football. He often employed a 4–2–3–1 formation at the clubs he has managed. While doing so, he instructed his team to build from the back, intimidate and unsettle opponents with a quick press system and work the ball into the box.

Pochettino's team selection tended to include quick players with excellent stamina, likely due to those players having the attributes to excel in a high press system. He was also hailed by many pundits for his focus on developing local players from the clubs' youth academies.

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino were spotted meeting for lunch in Mayfair on Tuesday.

Photographers caught the pair outside Scott's Restaurant ahead of Tottenham's game against Newcastle United this weekend as Spurs look to end the season in second place.

Jesus Perez, Tottenham's assistant head coach, was also at the meeting in London.

Louis van Gaal seems set to lose his job this summer and these snaps caused a fuss on social media, with claims that Ferguson could be trying to convince Pochettino to leave north London.

Yet Sportsmail was told the lunch was arranged because there is mutual admiration from both sides. Tottenham were also aware of the not-so-secret meeting.

Ferguson is known to admire Pochettino, who recently revealed he has a verbal agreement in place to stay with Spurs until 2021.

Tottenham missed out on the title this season but it has been claimed that Ferguson considers the Argentinian coach the best in the division.

Labour MP for Tottenham, David Lammy, told The Spurs Show previously: 'I'm going to let you into a secret.

'About six weeks ago, I sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson at a dinner in support of grass-roots football abroad. He said to me, "I think you guys have got the best manager in the Premier League".

'Alex Ferguson said that.'

Ferguson himself said previously: 'Well, the manager [Pochettino] has been fantastic.

'They have a bad record of managers, there is no doubt about that. They have had so many over the years, but this lad has composure.

'You never see him ruffled and the way his team play is a testimony to the work he is doing.'

THIS SEASON

They will have no silverware to show for their efforts but Tottenham can take heart going forward from an excellent season that has seen them consistently produce exciting football.

A second-place finish, some 10 points behind champions Leicester, looks like a big margin but Spurs have undoubtedly made progress under Pochettino's guidance.

They have scored 68 times in the Premier League - a tally second only to Manchester City - and let in a league-low 30 goals, suggesting strengths at both ends of the pitch and a nice balance to the team.

While Leicester's season has been incredible, few expect them to sustain it and, if Pochettino remains at the helm and continues his good work, there is a growing belief that Spurs could be champions this time next year.

By contrast, United have regressed under Van Gaal. A repeat of the fourth place finish of last season was the minimum of expectations for this, especially given another massive round of investment in players last summer, but they have gone backwards and look set to be consigned to the Europa League.

A very uncharacteristic shortage of goals - just 46 in the Premier League - has at least been counter-balanced by a watertight defence that has conceded just 34 times.

But the subsequent number of 1-0 wins has done little to appease a United faithful frustrated at boring, conservative football that doesn't necessarily deliver the desired results anyway.

RATINGS: Pochettino 8/10 Van Gaal 5/10

TRANSFERS

After finishing fifth last season, Pochettino identified the missing links in his team and filled them with shrewd and not-too-expensive signings, at least in comparison with some of their rivals.

They knew that Dele Alli was coming in from MK Dons for £5m though few could have anticipated the phenomenal impact the teenager has had.

Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld provided additional steel to the defence and all have played their part at some point.

There was definitely a need for additional strike power to support Harry Kane, but Son Heung-min hasn't lived up to his £18m price tag quite yet.

Clinton N'Jie, acquired for £8m, has been unlucky with injuries though, in fairness, Spurs haven't struggled to find the net.

Handed another blank cheque to purchase players that would turn United back into title contenders, Van Gaal spent big but has seen scant return.

A fee of £25m went on Dutch starlet Memphis Depay but, save the occasional flash of brilliance, he hasn't found his feet in the Premier League so far and has been spotted mainly on the bench of late.

The great German Bastian Schweinsteiger, signed for £6.5m, has struggled to keep up with the pace of the English game, while the jury remains out on £25m Morgan Schneiderlin.

On the positive side, Anthony Martial, though expensive at £36m, has looked an inspired buy with his 18 goals this season keeping United in contention much longer than they should have been.

The Italian wing-back Matteo Darmian looks a promising prospect for the future and we'll certainly see more of him but overall it's been a mixed bag for Van Gaal.

BRINGING THROUGH THE KIDS

The goals of Harry Kane have been a fantastic boost for Pochettino though it wouldn't be right to say the Argentine brought him through as he was already a first-team regular.

However, the England striker, who Spurs proudly sing about being 'one of their own', has certainly been inspired to reach great heights by his manager, with 31 goals last season followed by 28 this.

Midfielder Ryan Mason, another product of the club's academy, has also played a role though his season has been disrupted by injury.

Spurs also have a talented crop of emerging academy players, with the likes of Josh Onomah, Kyle Walker-Peters and Shayon Harrison potentially the next to make their mark.

Pochettino is certainly open to giving youth its chance and has proven this by giving some of the kids game time in the Europa League.

One of the saving graces of Van Gaal's time at Old Trafford has been his willingness to continue the United tradition of playing products of the club's academy.

Admittedly, his hand has often been forced by injuries, but Van Gaal has happily thrown teenage players into important matches.

The main success story has been striker Marcus Rashford, who has scored quite a few goals that seem to have relieved the pressure on Van Gaal at crucial points of the season.

Defenders Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Timothy Fosu-Mensah also look bright prospects for the future.

MAN MANAGEMENT

Pochettino has fostered a very good team spirit at White Hart Lane, with his playing squad knowing their roles inside out and appreciating the importance of high levels of fitness.

The Argentine does crack the whip at times, with double training sessions the norm, but everyone in the team by now recognises the benefits of them when games are being won late on.

You don't hear whispers of dissent coming from the Spurs dressing room and it's a team willing to make sacrifices for one another on the field.

Pochettino's tactics and style of play are by now ingrained and the winning habit has been instilled.

Over at Old Trafford, it's been a different story. There was a dressing-room mutiny mid-season against Van Gaal's repetitive training drills and insistence on rigid, possession-based football.

It coincided with the manager coming under intense pressure after crashing out of the Champions League and losing ground in the Premier League, raising speculation he would be sacked.

But, after clear-the-air talks, the players have rallied around Van Gaal and done the job required in important matches to keep United's season ticking along.

For some of the older guard, however, the style of football they are being asked to play must go against everything they've known in the past.

RATING: Pochettino 9/10 Van Gaal 6/10

HANDLING THE MEDIA

Pochettino is not one to shy away from answering a question and his grasp of English is improving, even if he sometimes still relies on translations for some of the more complex questions.

The Spurs boss comes across as warm, honest and open, sometimes cracking a smile or a joke in press conferences and television interviews.

In many ways, he embodies the positivity radiating from the club at the moment.

Van Gaal, by contrast, takes a rather more confrontational approach to his media engagement. A proud and stubborn man, he has always strived to make sure he gets the final says when talking to journalists.

There have been plenty of tetchy exchanges during press conferences and even a few personal insults aimed at members of the media.

And relations with the press reached a low around Christmas when headlines about his future caused Van Gaal to storm out of a press conference.

There is a warm and jovial side to the Dutchman, usually seen when out enjoying himself with his family, but it very rarely comes across when talking to the media.

RATING: Pochettino 8/10 Van Gaal 5/10

STYLE OF PLAY AND TACTICS

Spurs have impressed many observers this season with their exciting and attacking brand of football and this is reflected in their impressive goalscoring returns.

From back to front, Spurs are a very watchable team with their 4-2-3-1 system offering plenty of balance and forward thrust.

With an outstanding goalkeeper in Hugo Lloris and a resolute central defensive pairing of Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in place, their wing-backs, rotated game-by-game, have ample opportunity to spring forward.

The impressive Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele anchor the midfield, allowing Erik Lamela, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to roam around sole striker Harry Kane.

With plenty of creativity and goals throughout the team, plus an emphasis on counter-attacking and moving the ball at speed, especially down the flanks, Spurs are a very dangerous proposition.

United have tried a similar system but with less clear-cut results. There remains a sense that Van Gaal still isn't settled on his best line-up and formation.

David de Gea has been a tremendous asset and saved United from defeat time after time with his reaction saves.

The defence remains wholly unconvincing - while Chris Smalling has improved under Van Gaal, Daley Blind, converted from midfield, isn't physically strong enough.

Marcos Rojo seems a reluctant wing-back at times and the sooner Luke Shaw returns from his injury problems, the better.

In midfield, Schweinsteiger just isn't up to speed with the English game and Schneiderlin sometimes flatters to deceive, meaning they remain dependent on veteran Michael Carrick and his ball retention.

With Depay not yet good enough for a regular first-team place, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard supply the strikers and it looks increasingly likely that Wayne Rooney will drop into that deeper role.

Up front, at least Martial and Rashford offer a clinical finish. The likes of Ashley Young and Ander Herrera, two of the better players, usually remain on the bench.

RATINGS: Pochettino 9/10 Van Gaal 6/10

PEDIGREE

At 44, Pochettino is very much still learning the managerial craft and he hasn't yet won any silverware during his tenures at Espanyol, Southampton and Spurs despite some encouraging league finishes.

They did reach the final of the Capital One Cup last season, losing to Chelsea at Wembley, but you do feel that trophies will come in due course for such a talented young manager.

Van Gaal will hope that the FA Cup - United play Crystal Palace at Wembley on May 21 - will be his first trophy in English football but you can hardly argue with his pedigree.

The Dutchman has achieved great success at every club he's managed, from the Champions League he won with Ajax, to two league titles with Barcelona, a noteworthy Eredivisie win with AZ Alkmaar, a double with Bayern Munich and that third-place finish at the 2014 World Cup with Holland.
