'He's a Ferrari... a £100m player': 'World class' Anthony Martial lauded by ex-Manchester United stars Owen Hargreaves, Robin van Persie and Paul Scholes after his performance in Europa League win over Copenhagen

* Manchester United beat Copenhagen in their Europa League quarter-final AET
* Anthony Martial won the penalty that got Manchester United past Copenhagen
* Bruno Fernandes scored to send his side to the Europa League semi-finals
* Martial starred throughout the clash, building on his post-shutdown form
* BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves hailed the player for performing like a 'Ferrari'

Anthony Martial's talismanic performance in Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Copenhagen on Monday night drew extremely high praise from pundits.

The Frenchman was the driving force as United snuck into the semi-finals despite a frustrating evening in Cologne, winning the penalty that Bruno Fernandes coolly tucked away in extra-time.

The performance built on Martial's searing post-shutdown form, which hasn't bypassed formed United star Owen Hargreaves: 'Everyone's got an opinion on Martial. He's a Ferrari. He just looked like a £100million player.'

Anthony Martial was the driving force behind Manchester United's 1-0 win over Copenhagen. The Frenchman won the penalty, scored by Bruno Fernandes, that sent United to the semi-final. The forward was a menace, struggling to finish but running the Copenhagen defence ragged

His BT Sport colleague, Paul Scholes, added: 'He's turning into a No 9 more and more every game I watch.

'He's normally a brilliant finisher but tonight the finishing wasn't quite there.'

Completing a trio of Martial admirers in the studio, Robin van Persie said: 'Martial always have an eye for his team-mates and that's what sets him apart from the others.

'That's why I think he's a world class player.'

Owen Hargreaves was full of praise for Martial in the BT Sport studio, hailing his recent form. Martial's form has been unstoppable since football resumed, scoring eight goals in 13 games

Martial has faced periodic bouts of criticism ever since his £54m move from Monaco in 2016 but has silenced any doubters in 2020 - coming alive following the coronavirus shutdown.

The 24-year-old forward has scored eight goals and provided six assists in United's 13 matches following the enforced break, taking his strike tally to 23 and assists to 12 for the campaign.

The 2019-20 season has already been Martial's best, foreshadowing more to come from the striker under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has got the best out of Martial this season after making him a striker

United will know their semi-final opponent on Tuesday night, and could be set to face Premier League rivals Wolves if Nuno Espirito Santo's side can beat Sevilla in their quarter-final.

Sevilla are the Europa League's most successful club with five victories in the competition, while United and Wolves have produced just three goals in their four meetings between them this season.

The sides drew 1-1 and 0-0 in their two Premier League fixtures, while United came out on top in the FA Cup - winning 1-0 in their third-round replay after it finished 0-0 in the original clash.

Default Re: Anthony Martial

How one text from Solskjaer helped transform Martial into a '£100m Ferrari': He was scolded by Mourinho, but now United finally have a 'world-class' goalscorer thanks to the boss's personal touch

* Anthony Martial again made the difference for Man United against Copenhagen
* They'd struggled to break through in Europa League until Martial won a penalty
* Frenchman is enjoying his best season for United with 23 goals and nine assists
* He is shining for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who urged him to play 'between the posts'
* It is stark contrast to Martial's miserable time when Jose Mourinho was in charge
* Now criticism of him has melted away with widespread praise for his displays

Turns out it takes a striker to get the best from a striker.

The evidence grows week-by-week, game-by-game that Anthony Martial is thriving under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Something the Manchester United manager said the other day was instructive of how Martial's game has developed during the Norwegian's time in charge.

It was Anthony Martial (centre) who made the difference for Manchester United again as they struggled to break down FC Copenhagen on Monday night, winning a penalty in extra time. Bruno Fernandes converted the kick to send Martial and United into the semi-finals

'We know he can do worldies but I like him scoring the simple goals, when he is in between the posts. He's done that a few times,' Solskjaer said.

So precisely the type of goals that Solskjaer built his career on. The goals that involve being in precisely the right place at the right time, feeding on a striker's instinct.

It helps explain why this is by some distance Martial's most prolific season as a United player and why the Frenchman genuinely looks to be enjoying his football.

Martial was handed the responsibility of leading United's exciting forward line and is prospering.

In pre-season, Solskjaer sent Martial a message asking if he'd like his No 9 shirt back after Romelu Lukaku's departure to Inter Milan.

When Martial replied 'Yes', Solskjaer said it was on the condition he showed he was worthy of it every time he stepped on the pitch. Martial has kept his side of the bargain.

He has become a game-changer and these qualities were once more in evidence as United toiled to hack their way through a thicket of Copenhagen defenders in the Europa League on Monday night.

The French striker is enjoying his best season in United colours, with 23 goals and nine assistsHe has become a deadly finisher in front of goal after Solskjaer made him a centre-forward

It was Martial's fancy footwork more often than not that saw United breach the stubborn Danish back line. And it was Martial felled to win the match-winning penalty in extra time, converted by Bruno Fernandes.

In truth, United would have booked their passage to the semi-finals with four or five goals if not for a blinder by Copenhagen keeper Karl-Johan Johnsson.

On another night, Martial himself would have scored a hat-trick. But when the moment came, the Frenchman was in the right place, won the penalty and United were through.

Martial will get another chance to show his vast improvement in the semi-final against Sevilla on Sunday night.

His increased goal return - Martial and Marcus Rashford, on 23 and 22 respectively are involved in a friendly game of 'anything you can do' - and sharpness in the box has finally eradicated the criticism that has dogged Martial's five years at Old Trafford.

For so long, he was seen as inconsistent. The kind of player who'd maybe bang in a wonder-goal one week but then not score for the next three.

Now the background noise is pure praise for the 24-year-old.

'Everyone's got an opinion on Martial. He's a Ferrari. He just looked like a £100million player,' purred Owen Hargreaves on BT Sport.

Martial was often criticised by Jose Mourinho and was almost sold by Solskjaer's predecessor. The French striker was on the receiving end of Mourinho's barbs, especially when he left United's pre-season tour of the United States in 2018 to be at the birth of his second child

His former United team-mate Paul Scholes added: 'He's turning into a No 9 more and more every game I watch.'

Another Old Trafford favourite, Robin van Persie, described him as 'a world-class player'.

At one point during the discussion, Van Persie said: 'He was struggling under Mourinho, right?'

Scholes, noted for his dry wit, replied: 'Who wasn't?'

Which takes us to the heart of the matter. Martial was regularly cold-shouldered during Mourinho's two-and-a-half seasons in charge at Old Trafford.

It was the classic Mourinho carrot and stick approach.

One moment Mourinho was giving Martial a pat on the back for tracking back to win a tackle near the touchline. The next he was being scolded for standing still or a perceived lack of effort.

Solskjaer's warm and encouraging approach has been in stark contrast to Mourinho's methods. Former striker Solskjaer has urged Martial to get 'between the posts' to score more goals

Let's not forget that Martial's United career almost came to a sudden end in July 2018 after he had the audacity to fly to Paris from a pre-season tour of the United States to be at the birth of his second child.

'He has the baby and after the baby is born - beautiful baby, full of health, thank God. He should be here, and he is not here,' Mourinho said of Martial's paternity leave.

To compound matters, Martial was fined £180,000 - two weeks' wages - and put on the transfer list.

He obviously didn't leave in the end but is it really any wonder Martial's two lowest scoring seasons in United colours came under Mourinho?

While the Portuguese boss put Martial on edge with his noxious cocktail of praise and barbed criticism, Solskjaer has made him feel truly appreciated.

After every game, Solskjaer makes a beeline to Martial and warmly embraces him. The man who scored 126 goals for United can be seen imparting wisdom.

Martial and Marcus Rashford are pushing each other to finish as United's leading goalscorer

The Norwegian also realised early on that Martial had the qualities required to play the centre-forward position.

Under Mourinho, he was shoved out to the left side to make room for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and then Romelu Lukaku.

And it doesn't take a genius to realise that more time and touches inside the opposition penalty box equates to more chances and goals.

While Martial does still gravitate to the left side, he realises now that his primary focus must be to find space inside the box. 'Between the posts' as his manager put it.

Consequently, every measure of his attacking game has shown improvement this season.

Having averaged a goal every 315 minutes in 2016-17 and 212 minutes in 2017-18 under Mourinho, Martial now scores on average every 151 minutes under Solskjaer in all competitions.

Martial's attacking stats have improved in almost every department in his first full season working under Solskjaer - showing a huge contrast to during Mourinho's time in charge

Martial's touch maps for the two full seasons under Jose Mourinho (left is 2016-17, right 2017-18) show a player stuck on the left wing barely getting into the penalty area to score

His conversion to a centre-forward under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started in 2018-19 (left) and has flourished this season (right) with many more touches inside the opposition box

He has already matched his best assists return as a United player with potentially two matches of the season to come and he contributes to a United goal every 109 minutes on average.

The number of shots and shots on target Martial fires off per game has also increased and he puts away one in every five.

The service into Martial would only improve if United succeed in signing Jadon Sancho this summer, though extracting the England star from Borussia Dortmund, who are steadfastly sticking to their £108m valuation, is proving fiendishly difficult.

Martial started the season by scoring in United's 4-0 win over Chelsea and has kicked on. He netted United's first goal in their victory over Manchester City just before the lockdown

But for the moment United don't need to look elsewhere for a centre-forward after a season of highlights for Martial.

He has scored in the Premier League against Manchester City and Chelsea not to mention becoming the first United player to score a league hat-trick in over seven years against Sheffield United in late June.

A brilliant season can now be crowned by helping United win the Europa League this month.

Oh, and finishing with more goals than Rashford. His manager would understand.

Ada yang Berbeda dari Anthony Martial
Afif Farhan - detikSport

Paris - Para pemain Timnas Prancis memuji Anthony Martial.

"Saya sih hanya menduga-duga.

'He's changed': France boss Didier Deschamps says Anthony Martial is 'on the right track' on and off pitch following the Manchester United star's return to form

* Anthony Martial made his first start for France since March 2018 on Tuesday
* Martial played a key role in the 4-2 Nations League victory over Croatia in Paris
* France head coach Didier Deschamps has been pleased with his transformation

France head coach Didier Deschamps has hailed the transformation of Antony Martial who he says is now 'on the right track' on and off the pitch.

Martial enjoyed a fine campaign for Manchester United last season where he finished the club's top scorer on 23 goals.

He was also on form for France against Croatia in the Nations League on Tuesday night in his first start for his country since March 2018.

Martial set up Antoine Griezmann for France's first goal, saw his shot come off the post to be put in by Croatia's Dominik Livakovic for their second and played a key role in the world champions recording a 4-2 victory in Paris.

France head coach Didier Deschamps praised Martial's transformation over the last 12 months. Martial finished Manchester United's top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions last season

It is somewhat of a big difference from when Martial was linked with a move away from United a couple of seasons ago and couldn't get a look in for France.

Now he is first-choice for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford and back on France's radar.

eschamps singled Martial out for praise, adding that the United attacker's hard work over the last year had paid off.

Deschamps said: 'I wouldn't say that he has undergone a metamorphosis but he has changed. I have noticed as well off of the pitch. He is capable of making a difference, very solid. He is on the right track.'

Martial, who will now return to United in preparation for the new Premier League season, told French television channel TF1: 'It's been a long time since I played for France and it was important to me to have a good match.'

'Anthony Martial almost conned us into thinking he was an actual centre-forward': Paul Scholes insists Manchester United still need to buy a 'top-class' striker because Frenchman is not good enough... and just days after club signed Edinson Cavani

* Paul Scholes still believes Manchester United are missing a 'top-class' striker
* Anthony Martial is not a No 9 despite his success last season, Scholes said
* Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has missed out on attacking transfer targets this year
* United have signed Edinson Cavani but Scholes says a new striker is needed

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes still believes his old club are missing a 'top-class' striker as Anthony Martial 'almost conned us' into believing he was a No 9 last season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to improve his attacking options in the wide areas this summer with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho but the club failed to stump up the £108million fee. The Red Devils also missed out on signing striker Erling Haaland in January as he opted to make the move to Dortmund instead.

Instead, United signed 33-year-old free agent Edinson Cavani last week but ex-England midfielder Scholes insists the club still needs a centre forward.

United's first-choice front three currently consists of Marcus Rashford on the left, Mason Greenwood on the right and Martial through the middle, and although Scholes did praise the trio, he believes that none of them are out-and-out No 9s.

'These forwards are exceptionally talented lads. We all know that,' he told Stadium Astro.

'The problem with United's forwards is that none of them is an actual centre-forward.

'Martial almost conned us into thinking he was one at the end of last season because he scored so many goals and was quite good.

Anthony Martial 'almost conned us' into believing he was a No 9 last season, says Paul Scholes. Manchester United legend Scholes still believes his old club are missing a 'top-class' striker. United signed free agent Edinson Cavani last week after missing out on other transfer targets

'He's started this season quite poorly again, which makes you think he isn't. It's misleading. That's why I've kept saying we need a top-class No 9.'

Martial scored 23 goals in 48 appearances last campaign and ended the 2019-20 season strongly, notching three goals in his last six league games. In three matches this term he is yet to find the back of the net.

Rashford bagged 22 goals in 44 matches last season and has scored two in five in the 2020-21 campaign, while Greenwood grabbed 19 goals in 51 games in all competitions and has one to his name this time around.

United's new arrival Cavani scored an impressive 200 goals in 301 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain before leaving the club this summer.

But Scholes has branded the decision to hand Cavani a two-year deal on deadline-day last week 'very strange'.

He believes that United have signed the Uruguayan five years too late, and does not expect him to take Solskjaer's side to the next level this season.

When asked how he expects the former PSG hitman to fare at Old Trafford, he said: 'Well, we'll have to wait and see won't we.

'Obviously in his day, he's been a top-quality centre forward. There's no doubt about that. But he's 33 years old, looked like he was going to retire. He's not played a lot of football for PSG last season.

'Five, six years ago, yeah he's a great signing, he'll take us onto that next level possibly. But I just don't think he'll take us to the next level now.'

Solskjaer's side will be looking to bounce back from their humiliating 6-1 defeat by Tottenham when they face Newcastle on Saturday.

'The amount of times I looked up and he was walking... you have to move to score a goal': Paul Scholes lays into Anthony Martial for lack of effort up front in Manchester United's defeat by Istanbul Basaksehir

* Paul Scholes has criticised Anthony Martial's lack of effort in their defeat
* Martial was on the scoresheet as United were beaten by Istanbul Basaksehir
* However, Scholes feels that Martial should have chased after the ball more

Paul Scholes has criticised Anthony Martial for a lack of effort in Manchester United's 2-1 loss away to Istanbul Basaksehir.

With United 2-0 down, Martial managed to pull a goal back for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the 43rd minute with a header.

However, United still ended up losing and United legend Scholes was left frustrated by Martial constantly 'walking' when he should have been chasing after the ball.

Speaking on BT Sport, United legend Scholes said: 'I’m a big fan of Anthony Martial but the amount of times I looked up and he was walking, he has have to realise as a centre forward - every now and again you have to move if you’re going to score a goal.

'You can’t just be walking in front of two centre-backs doing nothing.

'When a midfielder player has got time on the ball - I look up he’s walking, Rashford is coming to the ball - it’s not his strength. Sometimes experienced players like a Matic have to tell them. They almost need coaching through a game.'

Paul Scholes criticised Manchester United striker Anthony Martial for his lack of effort. Scholes felt that Martial should have chased after the ball more against Istanbul Basaksehir. Although Martial scored in the Champions League clash he couldn't stop United from losing

Demba Ba put Istanbul Basaksehir in the lead when he capitalised upon some disappointing defending to open the scoring in the 12th minute, with Edin Visca subsequently adding to the hosts' lead before Martial reduced the deficit.

United had made an encouraging start to their Champions League campaign by securing victories against Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig.

However, they struggled against Istanbul Basaksehir, with United suffering another blow following on from their Premier League defeat to Arsenal last weekend.

Solskjaer's team will be determined to respond when they face Everton away on Saturday.

Man United need an elite striker to challenge for Premier League title… but Anthony Martial showed he's ready for the fight with encouraging display in Everton win

* Anthony Martial's return to Manchester United was key in 3-1 Everton victory
* His willingness to run made him the focal point in United's potent attack
* Martial missed three Premier League games for a soft red card vs Tottenham
* United certainly looked a better-balanced team with striker Martial in the line-up

Though Bruno Fernandes grabbed the headlines at Goodison Park, the return of Anthony Martial up front was also key to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United looking a more potent attacking force, particularly in the first half.

Martial was straight back into the starting line-up after missing three Premier League games for a soft red card collected against Spurs.

Given that United had failed to score against Chelsea and Arsenal while the Frenchman netted in consecutive Champions League games, it was a no-brainer he was in at centre forward, flanked by Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes grabbed the headlines but the return of Anthony Martial up front was key. His willingness to run and be a focal point for United's attack was important in creating space

There was an amusing early sign that Martial had been away from domestic action for three weeks.

He keenly sprinted straight into the opposition half at kick-off only to quickly return once he realised he had to join the other 21 players on the pitch in taking the knee.

Understandably, there were signs of rustiness in his play as well. His first touch from a Fernandes pass bounced off his heel. When he got a first sight of goal after 15 minutes, the shot was dragged wide rather than testing Jordan Pickford.

But while the technique was slightly off, the willingness to run and be a focal point for United's attack was important in creating space for team-mates.

Bernard put Everton ahead but United hit back before half-time with a Fernandes double.

Martial's final pass didn't always find its intended target and his shooting boots need some fine-tuning, but his link up play was good and there were signs the touch is already coming back.

He also showed bravery in getting over a heft aerial challenge by Michael Keane which saw the United player caught in the face and on the shin in a double-whammy.

United certainly looked a better-balanced team with Martial in the line-up, some comfort for Solskjaer who can temporarily forget speculation about his future and plan for a home game against West Brom immediately following the international break.

He will expect the goals will follow for Martial. He already has 73 in the five years he's been at Old Trafford, befitting his new status as a striker rather than winger where he started.

Martial tired in the second half just like United in general as Everton pushed for an equaliser. It was no surprise when he was withdrawn 10 minutes from time for Edinson Cavani. His contribution had been important for the team if not sensational.

United fans crave a world-class No9 like Harry Kane or Robert Lewandowski and it's a shame new signing Edinson Cavani isn't five years younger or Mason Greenwood five years older.

Cavani showed he can still finish by adding an injury-time third - though Solskjaer will have been just as pleased by the resolute nature of his team's performance spearheaded by Martial.

Realistically, they probably do need a new high-class centre forward if they are going to challenge for the Premier League.

Right now however, Martial is the best option Solskjaer has. And there were improvements for United in the final third compared to the lethargy against Arsenal and Chelsea.

keran gol Martial belum selancar musim lalu nih, baru awal musim udah kena kartu merah absen 3 pertandingan. Cavani aja dah gol debutnya, bisa2 GW depan Ole lebih menurunkan Cavani nih jadi starter
