'It's like Under 10s football... embarrassing!': Paul Scholes tears into Manchester United's hapless defenders with Rio Ferdinand 'FLABBERGASTED' after Demba Ba's extraordinary opener helps Istanbul Basaksehir pull off shock win in Turkey

* Paul Scholes slammed Manchester United's defending as embarrassing
* United left Demba Ba alone on the halfway line while taking their own corner
* The ball was cleared to Ba who was able to run through on goal and finish
* Scholes said it was like 'Under 10s football' to not have at one defender back
* Istanbul Basaksehir went on to win the game 2-1 on Wednesday evening

Paul Scholes slammed Manchester United's defending as 'Under 10s football' after Demba Ba was left on his own to breakaway and score the opening goal in a shock 2-1 defeat for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men.

Just 15 minutes into the game, Istanbul Basaksehir managed to turn defence into attack following a short corner from United, which was eventually cleared up to the field to Ba who was all alone on the halfway line. Nemanja Matic was the player closest to him but he was unable to get back to stop the striker from breaking the deadlock.

Ex-United midfielder Scholes was incredulous as to how his former side could have left Ba on his own and described the defending as 'embarrassing' and 'all over the place'.

Paul Scholes slammed Manchester United's hapless defending as 'Under 10s football'. Demba Ba was left all on his own on the halfway line and was able to run through and score

'Surely you always have someone back on the halfway line, they’re pointing at Matic. You’re always goalside, it’s like Under 10s football,' Scholes told BT Sport

'You can understand if it’s last minute but it’s the first 10 minutes, it’s embarrassing.

'They’ve struggled with them attacking wise, they’ve gone with one holding player today. Defensively they’re all over the place.

'The defenders have to be better, forward play could be better as well. Defensively they’ve got to take responsibility, you have to defend one-on-one sometimes when you’re at Manchester United they seem incapable of doing it.'

United were attacking from a corner but didn't leave a defender back as the ball was cleared

Joining in with the anger of his fellow team-mate Scholes, United legend Rio Ferdinand could hardly contain himself when offering analysis in the studio.

Interjecting across host Gary Lineker, Ferdinand said: 'Hold on, please Gary.

'Where is the organisation in this team? You wouldn't see this on Hackney Marshes!'

Solskjaer tried to offer an explanation for defensive lapse, before claiming the defending was 'unforgivable'.

After seeing his side slump to a shock defeat in Turkey, Solskjaer said: 'The performance wasn’t good enough against a team that worked and ran and well they hit us on the break a couple of times and score a coupe of goals like you sometimes doing Europe when you don’t defend well enough.

'We play a short corner and forget about the man up top and that’s unforgivable and, of course, the second one as well we’re not very well organised to counter-press and win the ball back when we play in.

'Two soft goals to give away and then we didn’t have enough to comeback in the second half. [We had] 45 minutes to save something from the game – we threw everything at it but couldn’t break them down.'

When asked what the defeat means, Solskjaer reluctantly admitted that it was a reality check as they became the first English team to lose in the Champions League this season, despite their promising start.

United's defenders were all at sea once again as the hosts went two goals up before half-time. Edin Visca rifled the ball past Dean Henderson to put Istanbul Basaksehir two goals to the good

Solskjaer added: '[The defeat has] set us back a lot, you get a reality check every time you play football here. Nothing becomes history quicker than a game of football.

'You don’t just turn up and get three points in the Champions League that’s shown here today. We played against lots of good individuals in a good teams set up and we weren’t good enough that’s it.

'It’s not easy to be positive now of course it isn’t when you’ve just lost the way you did but these players are good players and we have a chance on Saturday morning to get going again.'

Solskjaer's former team-mate and United legend Rio Ferdinand was also left 'flabbergasted' by the visitors' defending during the first half.

'That’s a goal you usually see when you’re trying to get an equaliser on the 89th minute,' said Ferdinand.

'I was flabbergasted seeing that. It's a lack of respect of yourself.

'They’ve been called inconsistent, lacking teamwork. They need to get a result here.'

Former United striker Robin Van Persie was also critical of how United had left themselves open from their own corner.

'Defensively it’s very poor,' said the Dutchman.

'I don’t think I remember seeing a goal like that conceded. You always have at least one, normally two players at the back.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes responsibility for 'unforgivable' defending leading to Demba Ba's incredible breakaway goal from Manchester United corner against Istanbul Basaksehir after they 'forgot duties' at the back

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took responsibility for Manchester United's defending
* United defended woefully as Demba Ba put Istanbul Basaksehir in the lead
* Solskjaer admitted that there was a lack of communication in United's defence

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took responsibility for Manchester United’s ‘unforgiveable’ defending after they suffered a shocking Champions League defeat in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

United’s performance was as ugly as their black and white change kit as they stank out the Fatih Terim Stadium and went down 2-1 to Basaksehir.

The Turks’ first goal was comical as United left Demba Ba unmarked on the halfway line when they took a short corner, and the veteran striker ended up racing clear to score.

‘We forgot about the man up top, that is unforgiveable,’ admitted Solskjaer.

‘Obviously it’s not a goal you normally concede. We’ve not done our duties there, that’s my responsibility.

‘Playing a short corner and everyone forgets to get back with the players they’re playing against, and Demba Ba snuck in behind us.

‘It’s a lack of communication and good decisions. You don’t really see those goals at this level.’

Solskjaer refused to comment when he was asked whether he now fears for his job

It was Basaksehir’s first ever goal in the Champions League group stage, and Edin Visca’s strike secured their first win despite Anthony Martial pulling one back.

United suffered a second defeat in four days following Arsenal’s win at Old Trafford last weekend, and Solskjaer is under mounting pressure going into the clash with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.

He added: ‘It has set us back a lot, of course it has. You get a reality check every time you play a football game.

‘You don’t just turn up and get three points in the Champions League. We were not good enough, that’s it.

‘It’s not easy to be positive now when we’ve lost the way we did.

‘The last two results have been a punch in our stomach and the only way I know of to respond – and I hope the players as well – is to get your act together for Everton.

‘That’s going to be tough and difficult, but I’m glad we’ve got a game on Saturday.’

Asked if he fears for his job, the United manager replied: ‘I decline to comment on such a thing.

‘Of course, it’s early on. You've got to stay strong. I’m employed by the club to do a job and I do that to the best of my ability with our staff.’

Basaksehir’s opening goal was the main talking point, and former United players Paul Scholes and Robin van Persie pulled no punches in their analysis on BT Sport.

‘It’s like Under-10s football,’ said Scholes. ‘Surely you always have someone back on the halfway line.

‘It’s laughable really what has happened. They’ve got nobody within 20 yards of the centre-forward.

‘You can understand if it’s last minute, but it’s the first 10 minutes. It’s embarrassing.’

Van Persie added: ‘This is what you learn when you’re 12. It’s a comical mistake.

‘This is so basic. You will do you set-pieces, offensively and defensively, and coaches will tell everyone where to stand.

‘You would expect more was coming after the goal just before half-time from Man United, but they brought little to the table in the second half. Basaksehir was the better side.’

'When they perform to this standard they look a very poor side': Dion Dublin savages shocking Manchester United after defeat by Istanbul Basaksehir and says first half showing in Turkey was their WORST 'for three of four years'

* Manchester United fell to a poor Champions League loss to Istanbul Basaksehir
* Demba Ba and Edin Visca both scored before the break to pile on the pressure
* Anthony Martial's header proved to be a mere consolation for a limp United side
* Dion Dublin has slammed their performance in a savage opinion of the clash

Dion Dublin has savagely ripped into Manchester United after their limp Champions League defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir.

Demba Ba's superb solo effort in the first half, combined with Edin Visca's venomous strike, has firmly piled the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a miserable evening in Turkey.

While co-commentating for BBC Radio 5 Live, Dublin even insisted that United's showing before the interval was their worst for 'three or four years'.

He said: 'That was a really poor performance from Man United. I'm hoping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will stick the players in a room and make them watch that performance and then say "right what did you think of that?".

'There's just too much walking about, the body language isn't great from the players.

'I've seen individuals play very well and they look incredible but when they all perform to this standard they look a very poor side and they did tonight.

Manchester United fell to a limp 2-1 defeat at Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League. Dion Dublin has savaged the performance of United and slated the players' body language. United were brought back down to earth despite a perfect start to life in a difficult Group H

'The first half was possibly the worst performance I've seen from a Man United team for three or four years.'

United made the 3,322-mile round trip to Istanbul off the back of a perfect start to life in Group H.

Wins over last season's finalists Paris Saint-Germain and Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig had lightened the mood at the club following a poor start to their league campaign.

But the battling performance from Basaksehir, spurred on by a small but vocal group of supporters, forced United to crash back down to earth.

Anthony Martial gave the visitors a glimmer of hope after guiding a free header into the far corner, but United's pressure in the second half ended in more frustration.

Old Trafford great Paul Scholes is also among those to have criticised his former side, likening their shaky defending to 'Under 10s football'.

The manner in which Ba opened the scoring, an unchallenged dash down the field after a long punt forward, left the iconic midfielder baffled.

'Surely you always have someone back on the halfway line, they’re pointing at Matic. You’re always goalside, it’s like Under 10s football,' Scholes told BT Sport at half time.
