Ferguson Mulai Grogi



MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Manajer Manchester United (MU), Sir Alex Ferguson, mulai grogi menghadapi pekan-pekan akhir kompetisi Premier League 2009-10. Tidak seperti biasanya, dia mulai dihinggapi perasaan aneh.

Ferguson begitu kenyang pengalaman di Premier League. Bahkan, bersama MU, dia sudah memenangkannya 11 kali. Namun, untuk musim ini, dia begitu tegang menanti akhir kompetisi. Sebab, timnya di ambang pintu juara dan membuat rekor juara 19 kali, atau terbanyak dibanding klub lain. Selain itu, jika kembali juara, itu akan menjadi gelar keempat secara berturut-turut.

Meski sudah 36 tahun menjadi manajer, Fergie tak menyangkal kadang ada perasaan grogi dalam menghadapi tensi kompetisi yang makin tinggi. "Itulah pertandingan sepak bola yang membuat kita menjadi tegang. Itu aspek emosionalnya," kata Fergie.

"Bagi para manajer, kuncinya adalah kemenangan, kalah, atau seri. Anda harus berusaha selalu memenangkan pertandingan dan tak boleh kalah terlalu banyak. Jika itu yang terjadi, maka Anda akan kehilangan pekerjaan," terangnya.

"Tak ada seorang pun yang langsung bertanggung jawab terhadap hasil pertandingan kecuali manajer," tambahnya.

MU masih memimpin klasemen sementara dengan nilai 69. Mereka hanya unggul 1 poin dari Chelsea dan 2 poin dari Arsenal. Sementara kompetisi hanya tinggal 7 pertandingan. MU harus memenangkan semuanya jika ingin kembali juara. Sabtu (27/3/2010), MU akan bertandang ke kandang Bolton Wanderers. Ini akan menjadi pertarungan penting pertama dari sisa pertandingan.

"Kami harus memenangkan tujuh pertandingan sisa jika ingin juara. Jika kami mengalahkan Bolton, maka harus siap menang di pertandingan berikutnya dan berikutnya," tegasnya. (MRR)

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he still trusts Dimitar Berbatov. He also claims Berbatov still has a major role to play for Manchester United.

“Yes, I still trust him. He is a good player and there is absolutely no reason why we should doubt that.”

“Dimitar he has done well in a lot of games recently but we prefer to play with one striker. When we got the man sent off on Wednesday there was no need to bring a striker on because all we were trying to do was go over the line in terms of defending.”

After Manchester United's defeats to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, Sir Alex Ferguson needs to spend big to bring further success to Old Trafford



Once again, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to adhere to what Leo Durocher, the old baseball coach, used to say about "show me a good loser and I'll show you an idiot". This time it was a Stan Boardman moment, deriding Bayern Munich as "typical Germans" for surrounding the referee to campaign for Rafael da Silva's red card. Typical Ferguson, you could say. The habit of trying to influence, or deceive, match officials is practised in every country – even Ferguson's beloved Scotland, judging by the way Darren Fletcher was flailing his arms at Mike Dean and beseeching him for a nonexistent penalty against Chelsea last Saturday.

By now, we have grown accustomed to this kind of response from Ferguson, whether it be questioning whether Italians can be trusted or calling the Dutch "arrogant", as he did after a 3-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in 2000. The shock factor has diminished over the years, replaced by a knowing roll of the eyes from those who know him best. Nobody works the levers of the media better than Manchester United's manager and, like a conjuror, these little outbursts can succeed in misdirecting his audience from the shortcomings of his own team. Those Germans: they bombed our chippie, you know.

What Ferguson did not want to consider on Wednesday night was the notion that his team had come up short. Bayern, he said, were "lucky". In fact, he used that word half a dozen times and, in fairness, with a little justification on the basis that, 11 versus 11, United did look the more likely winners. It has been a galling week for the Premier League champions but there were mitigating circumstances, among them Wayne Rooney's injury, and the lesson of history is that we should desist from the kind of knee-jerk reaction that had another newspaper's website posing the question at 8am today "Has time got the better of Ferguson?"

The hair may not be so chestnut any more, the bags under his eyes seemed supersized on Wednesday and his voice was laced with unmistakeable sadness, but do not question his longevity. Bill Shankly left Anfield at the age of 60. Brian Clough relinquished his powers at Nottingham Forest at 58. Bob Paisley lasted until he was 64 and Sir Matt Busby closed his reign at Old Trafford when he was 62.

Time caught up with them all. Even Busby. On one coach journey, a sheet of paper was passed around United's players showing a caricature of Busby, drawn with great skill and care in ink, depicting him with his nose as a penis and his cheeks as two testicles. The caption read "Bollocks Chops". Eamon Dunphy, one of United's players of the time, remembers it illustrating "the depths to which Busby's stock had sunk among a faction in the club". Can you seriously imagine the class of 2010 treating Ferguson with so little respect?

Even so, there are legitimate concerns for United supporters. One is Michael Carrick's regression and his seemingly fixed inability to influence big matches. Rio Ferdinand is now 31 and troubled by recurrent back problems. Rafael da Silva has shown that, while talented, he is still very raw. Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and particularly Gary Neville are in decline. Edwin van der Sar will retire at the end of next season. And the replacements for this illustrious cast of thirtysomethings do not always inspire confidence.

The French winger Gabriel Obertan has vanished almost without trace since the 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Leeds United in January. Darron Gibson is a splendid striker of the ball but lacks the mobility and passing range of a really top midfielder. Ben Foster has endured a dreadful year. A £10m deal has been put in place for Fulham's young central defender Chris Smalling but, since then, he has looked error-prone to say the least.

Then there is the issue of Dimitar Berbatov and the overwhelming sense that Wednesday demonstrated he has not worked. Berbatov was on the bench despite Rooney's patent lack of fitness. After Rooney was withdrawn, with the team needing another goal, there were 25 minutes when Ferguson moved Nani, a winger, into the centre-forward's role. Berbatov has now started only six out of 22 Champions League games since becoming United's most expensive player at £30.75m from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2008. He was introduced with 10 minutes to go.

Ferguson will deny it, of course, but even the most trusting disciple could be forgiven for wondering whether the manager can ever be believed again after the Peculiar Case of Wayne Rooney's Right Ankle. Ferguson also denies that the ruling Glazer family have kept from him the £80m that United received from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo but, again, can we take his word for it?

This is the true problem for United: they need a better class of replacement for their older players and that will require their owners to flex some financial muscle. Everyone in football knows that is not going to happen.

VIVAnews - Bek tengah Barcelona, Gerard Pique mengaku pernah berbohong kepada Sir Alex Ferguson saat masih berada di Manchester United. Dan Sir Alex sampai sekarang tak tahu.

Itu dilakukan Pique agar dimainkan Sir Alex. Pique harus berbohong ketika ditanya Bos MU itu soal bermain di posisi full back di akademi Barcelona.

"Saya bohong. Saya jawab, 'ya, saya sering bermain di posisi itu di tim junior Barca'. Lalu, saya dimainkan di posisi bek kanan saat melawan West Ham. Sayangnya, saya tampil bagus saat itu," canda Pique kepada Daily Mail.

Pique bergabung dengan Manchester United saat masih berusia 17. Ia menghabiskan tiga musim di Old Trafford, termasuk semusim dipinjamkan ke Real Sociedad.

Bek 23 tahun ini kembali ke Barcelona sejak musim 2008/2009. Kini, Pique selalu menjadi starter Pep Guardiola.

Pique pun menerangkan alasan hijrah dari Manchester United: "Nemanja Vidic dan Rio Ferdinand kokoh di posisi bek tengah. Mereka menjadi tandem hebat, dan saya tak mungkin melewati mereka."

"Saat itu, MU juga masih punya Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans dan Mikael Silvestre," lanjut Pique.

Setelah dibohonginya, defender Barca ini juga memuji Sir Alex Ferguson yang dianggapnya "seperti ayah kedua bagi para pemain." "Seseorang yang selalu memberi nasihat saya. Bukan hanya soal sepakbola, tapi juga pentingnya hidup," kata Pique.

"Orang bilang ia menakutkan. Faktanya, dia sangat dekat dengan pemain," lanjutnya.

Pique juga mengaku sangat bangga meski hanya berada di bangku cadangan Manchester United saat memenangi Liga Champions 2008. "Saya takkan melupakan momen itu. Adu penalti bak adegan dalam film Woody Allen, Match Point. Terutama, saat bola menjebol gawang dan tak tahu klub mana yang akan kalah."

"Semuanya bisa berubah dalam waktu yang sangat cepat. Sangat luar biasa melihat wajah fans ketika menjadi juara Eropa," tutup Pique.

Manchester United memulai misi mereka mencari manajer baru pengganti Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nama terakhir ini kemarin menyatakan pada para petinggi United, "Satu musim lagi, dan saya akan keluar dari sini". Artinya Fergie akan pergi pada musim panas 2011 nanti. 6 bulan sebelum ia berusia 70 tahun. Tapi sumber di dalam Old Trafford menyatakan penggantinya sampai saat ini masih belum diputuskan.

United kini sedang memilih nama-nama terbaik dalam dunia sepakbola untuk menggantikannya dan Fergie sendiri tentu akan ikut memberikan masukan. Jose Mourinho, yang sekarang sedang melatih Inter Milan, adalah salah satu kandidat utama. Meskipun begitu ada orang-orang di Old Trafford yang tidak percaya Mourinho adalah orang yang tepat untuk melatih United. Alasannya adalah karena ia adalah pelatih bertipe jangka-pendek, yang selalu mencoba mencari pekerjaan selanjutnya.

Hal yang berbanding terbalik dengan Fergie. Orang ini menghabiskan 25 tahun untuk membangun sebuah dinasti sepakbola di Manchester United. Manajer selanutnya yang paling ideal mungkin adalah yang sanggup memegang klub dalam waktu lama, dan memberikan stabilitas.

Mourinho masih baru akan menyelesaikan musim keduanya di Inter, tetapi sudah berteriak-teriak ingin pindah klub lagi. Ambisinya adalah melatih klub di Spanyol, dan mengawinkan tiga gelar dari tiga liga terbesar di Eropa. Inggris, Italia, dan Spanyol. Dan ia sangat ingin menunjukkan pada semua orang di Barcelona, yang menamainya "Sang Penerjemah", bahwa ia punya segalanya yang dibutuhkan untuk memenangkan titel di La Liga.

Sir Alex Ferguson has laughed off claims he has earmarked a retirement date.

Tabloid speculation suggested the Scot would bring down the curtain on his epic reign at the end of 2010/11 but Sir Alex jovially warned Fleet Street's finest he'll be around for years to come, after singling out the original story's author for banter at Friday's press briefing.

"I hope you're retiring, Bill [Thornton, Daily Star]," smiled the boss. "You deserve to. That's a last hurrah if I ever heard one! It's absolute rubbish, I've no intention of retiring. The only thing that determines my staying here is my health. Unfortunately for you lot I'm bloody rudely healthy! So you can live to suffer me. You'll be gone before I'm gone, don't you worry. The way most of you write, I'll be banning most of you anyway!"

Asked if the exhilaration of the title race has sustained him, Sir Alex replied: "I don't think it keeps you healthy, it's not good for you. But it's there. You have to accept pressure in life and I can deal with it."
