Gabriel Obertan and Bebe facing the same fate as Manchester United's class of 2005

If history is a reliable guide to the mindset of Sir Alex Ferguson, do not be surprised if the abject performances of Manchester United’s fringe players against non-league Crawley Town leads to a swift and ruthless purge at Old Trafford.

The likes of Gabriel Obertan, Bebe and Darron Gibson probably woke this morning with the temptation to pull themselves back under the duvet in a desperate attempt to banish the memory of Saturday’s embarrassingly narrow 1-0 FA Cup fifth round victory against the Sussex minnows.

But Ferguson’s post-match reaction to the victory, a complaint that too many of his players failed to grasp the significance of the FA Cup, was a coded warning of what many of them can now expect.

And if any of Saturday’s under-performers need a pointer, they only need look at what happened to the majority of the United team which was held to a 0-0 FA Cup draw by non-league Exeter in Jan 2005.

With the 4-0 Carling Cup hammering at West Ham last November still fresh in the memory for the likes of Obertan, Bebe, Anderson, Wes Brown, John O’Shea and Fabio da Silva, the sense of skating on thin ice against Crawley was tangible.

And for the likes of Obertan, who has now spent 18 months attempting to justify his status as a Manchester United player, the Crawley fixture was akin to a death row prisoner waiting for the verdict of his latest appeal.

Ferguson has talked in glowing terms about many of his next generation. Chris Smalling appears an astute buy, while Jonny Evans, despite his difficulties this season, has banked enough top level performances to retain the manager’s backing.

But it is doubtful that the same can now be said for Obertan and Bebe, the Portuguese winger whose £7.4m transfer fee now appears a gamble that might never pay off.

Bebe has at least shown glimpses of the raw talent that prompted Ferguson to sign him having never seen him play last summer.

But those glimpses have been overshadowed by his lack of game intelligence and woeful crossing ability.

Obertan has shone briefly against the likes of Barnsley and Bursaspor, but consistently failed to deliver in the Premier League on the rare occasions when he has been trusted by Ferguson.

Some supporters are keen to use Nani’s recent emergence as proof that Obertan and Bebe deserve patience, but Nani was a £17m player who has always displayed brilliance in sporadic flashes.

Consistency has been Nani’s problem. There have never been doubts over his quality, but those doubts are growing over Obertan and Bebe.

Which is why the prospect of a repeat of the Ferguson purge of 2005 is now looming large over Bebe, Obertan and out-of-favour first-teamers such as Brown and Gibson.

Having been humiliated by Alex Inglethorpe’s Exeter, six of United’s starting line-up that day found their Old Trafford careers either ended or placed in long-term cold storage.

Eric Djemba-Djemba made just two more appearances before being shipped out to Aston Villa, while David Bellion managed just one more outing as a substitute before being dismissed as another flop.

Youngsters Jonathan Spector and David Jones never played for United again and Chris Eagles had to wait more than two years for his next appearance with Ferguson choosing instead to loan the winger to Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and NEC Nijmegen.

Kieran Richardson’s reward for his performance against Exeter was a six-month loan at West Brom, where he at least helped keep Bryan Robson’s team in the Premier League.

Ferguson’s patience with the Crawley crop is unlikely to be any greater than that afforded to the Exeter team and few would expect several of Saturday’s players to re-appear this season.

Beyond that, the future for many appears bleak, but they can at least console themselves that one player who survived the Exeter debacle went on to build an impressive career away from United.

From Saturday’s evidence, however, it is difficult to identify the next Gerard Pique in Ferguson’s next generation.

Ini skuad ke prancis ya? Emang siapa lagi pemaen senior yang nggak dibawa (cuma giggs yang nggak ada ya?)? Klo maksimal ini yang bisa dibawa ya udah mo gimana lagi... mau nggak mau bebe dan obertan tetep dibawa daripada mbawa pemaen yang lebih muda. Baru klo ada Valencia, Ando, Owen nggak dibawa tapi malah mbawa Bebe baru lah bisa diitung. Klo maksimal ini ya mo gimana lagi...

Dari yang parah dulu aja deh...
Bebe punya bakat sangat besar.. Tapi.. He's lack knowledge about football... Dia maen di jalanan, dia maen dengan homeless people, in his country... Gw tidak mengecilkan dia, tapi dia butuh waktu lebih banyak untuk belajar bagaimana Manchester United bermain, atau bagaimana sepakbola di Inggris. Trus dia juga harus bisa bahasa inggris... Komunikasi sangat penting di lapangan...
Menurut gw, Bebe ga akan berkembang kalo dipinjemin.. So, stay @ reserves, play as much as he could, keep learning how to play Man Utd football, and learn how to speak english... Mudah2an 2 tahun ke depan bisa berkembang...

Obertan... Perkembangan dia minim banget... Time for him to be loaned... He needs alot of game.. First team game.. Week in, week out untuk ngembangin permainannya...
And he needs to train his stamina... Doi cuma bisa maen 1 babak... Abis TKO... Dia berpotensi, tapi perkembangannya sangat lambat...

Kesimpulannya... Loaned Obertan, and give Bebe more minutes in reserves....

Menurut saya obertan mungkin bisa sedikit diatas bebe terutama karena sebelumnya , seperti saat melawan city doi bermain lumayan, dan berhasil lolos saat man to man dengan pemain bertahan... tp pertandingan terakhir kemarin dan penampilan di match sebelumnya juga agak sedikit 'memuakkan' sih....
