SHAW CLAIMS THE PLAYERS' PLAYER OF THE YEAR ACCOLADE

Luke Shaw has been named the Manchester United Players' Player of the Year for 2018/19.

The left-back has been a regular throughout the season, making 40 appearances in all competitions, with Paul Pogba the only outfield player to receive more starts.

Undoubtedly, the defender has been consistent across the campaign after scoring in the opening fixture against Leicester City - his first goal in senior football.

We can confirm that the England international claimed the Players' Player of the Year prize by earning just a single vote more than second-placed Victor Lindelof.

Romelu Lukaku was one of the colleagues who sang Luke's praises, telling reporters recently: “Luke Shaw has been the best player of the season, for me.

”He has been brilliant since the start. He scored in the first game of the season against Leicester City and he has never looked back.“

It is Shaw's first annual individual award since joining the Reds from Southampton in 2014, but it may not be his last with so many years still ahead of him.

Luke was shortlisted for the PFA Young Player of the Year award just months before signing for United and is clearly very popular among his team-mates, who have admired his consistent form up and down the flank this campaign.

Fellow defender Lindelof narrowly missed out on the Players' Player award, but he has showed his promise at the heart of the backline.

WHAT LUKE SAID ON STAGE

Speaking to Dan Walker upon receiving the award, Shaw said: “It means a lot especially coming from the lads. They’ve always stuck by me when other people haven’t and they’ve always helped me along my rough journey, but it’s brilliant, and of course thanks to them all for voting.”

“Obviously this season hasn’t been the best,” he added, “but for me it’s been a better season than the last few personally, but of course I need to keep pushing on and see what happens next season.”

Luke also reiterated the need to work hard after being hampered with injuries in recent seasons. “That’s one of the main things you need to do here. You’ve probably heard the manager say that a lot of times. Hard work beats talent if talent doesn’t work hard enough. We know that saying well, but of course I worked hard to get back to where I want to be. I’ve still got more to come and hopefully that can continue.”

And what about next season? Luke was confident that the summer break will give the players time to refocus. “I think all the players are agreeing that we need to forget this season as quickly as possible. We’re all very disappointed with how it’s finished and with what’s going on around us in the Champions League, it’s hurting even more.

”But, this break will come at a good time and I think we need to refocus and come back stronger next year. With the players we have and the managing staff we have I’m sure we will.“

Manchester United embarrassed as Geoffrey Boycott slams players and questions Ole Gunnar Solskjaer live on MUTV at awards ceremony

Manchester United suffered a major embarrassment at their player of the year awards ceremony on Thursday evening as former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott slammed the players live on MUTV.

Every member of the first-team squad, plus Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff, were in attendance at Old Trafford for the end-of-season awards show, which was broadcast live on United’s own television channel. But MUTV viewers, who are normally given a positive perspective of United when watching the channel, were given a shock as Boycott delivered a frank assessment of the club’s season.

Asked what Manchester United meant to him at the moment, Boycott replied: ‘Disappointment more than anything. ‘For half of the season there was hope, some enjoyment, some good times. And somehow it’s kinda faded away towards the end. ‘The football hasn’t been inspiring, if anything they’ve let themselves down and the people who support Man United, because I think they are a bit better than that. ‘It’s not just the results but some of the football has been hard to watch, you know.’

MUTV presenter Mark Sullivan attempted to lighten the tone of the interview by suggesting that Solskjaer’s arrival will improve United’s chances, but Boycott was having none of it. ‘But he doesn’t have a record of experience does he?’ the 78-year-old fired back. ‘He had a short time at Cardiff and then resigned… honourably. ‘He’s looked after a team in his own country but it’s not the Premier League.’

CHONG AND GREENWOOD INSPIRED BY ACADEMY PREDECESSORS

After proudly collecting Player of the Year awards at Old Trafford on Thursday night, Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood looked towards a future of working hard to emulate their Manchester United Academy predecessors.

English striker Greenwood was given the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team trophy, before Dutch forward Chong took home the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team prize.

Both of the prospects made first-team debuts earlier this season and notably featured in the away Champions League win at Paris Saint-Germain, but their feet are planted firmly on the ground.

When they stepped down from the stage at the club’s annual awards night, they spoke enthusiastically about the challenge of following the many homegrown players who have established themselves in our senior ranks.

When asked about the Academy graduates who attended the awards dinner, the likes of Wes Brown and Darren Fletcher, Greenwood said: “Well, you see all of those players do it and think ‘why can't I do it?’ So, obviously, I look up to those players and hopefully I can do the same as them.

“I am just going to carry on working hard at Carrington, working with my team-mates and hopefully I will be able to get a few more chances. I am just going to keep on working hard.”

Chong, who featured for the first team against Huddersfield Town last weekend, agreed that the famous youth products provide plenty of inspiration.

“It is just brilliant to see Jesse [Lingard], Marcus [Rashford] and Scott [McTominay] being there when we go up to training, with the way they help us,” he said. “It is just really good to see for us.”

Quizzed on his progress this campaign and the opportunities that have come his way, Tahith continued: “You never want to expect stuff.

“I was just enjoying the journey and seeing what comes to my journey. Obviously, that happened in Paris and it is still indescribable. Coming on at Huddersfield as well was amazing. Even seeing Mason and the other boys involved was amazing.”

Impressively professional, both of the award-winning young players were quick to thank the support networks that continue to help them progress in the Academy.

“I am extremely happy and I wouldn't be able to do it without all of the coaching staff or my team-mates, so I would like to thank them,” said Greenwood.

Chong added: “It is an extremely proud moment for everyone who has worked with me, the coaches and my family. I think it is good.

“Like I said on stage, I could not have done it without my team-mates so I really appreciate that too.”
