Default Re: Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford has 13 goals in his last 38 Premier League matches and needs 214 minutes to find the back of the net... is he really the striker to lead Manchester United back to the top?

* Marcus Rashford is Manchester United's main striker after Romelu Lukaku left
* But, after five games of the season, there are doubts if he can be their main main
* Rashford has 13 goals in 38 league games, a poor ratio compared to others
* He scored the winner against Leicester but offered very little during the game
* Stan Collymore recently warned Rashford's career could follow Theo Walcott's

Marcus Rashford finally got what he always wanted this summer: the keys to the Manchester United attack.

Since he burst onto the scene under Louis van Gaal in 2016, Rashford had not been a regular starter. He was playing second fiddle to Romelu Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and anyone else considered superior to the clearly talented, but still very raw, England youngster.

Rashford's status at the club changed this summer when Lukaku left for Inter Milan and he finally got the chance to be United's main man. But after just five games of the new season, doubts have already arisen over whether he can lead them back to the summit of English football.

Marcus Rashford is struggling to score the goals needed of Manchester United's main striker. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need more from Rashford if they are to finish in the top four

United have had an underwhelming start to the season, winning just two of their opening five matches. Rashford has played all but five minutes of those games, managing three goals and one assist and it is that inconsistency that leaves doubts over his ability.

Since the start of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, Rashford has scored 13 goals in 38 appearances, which gives him a minutes per goal ratio of 214. When comparing that to the rest of the top flight's leading strikers, it is worryingly high.

To make things worse, just across Manchester, the ruthless Sergio Aguero is the standard-bearer. The Argentine has made the same number of appearances in the top flight as Rashford since August 2018 but has managed a goal every 101 minutes.

Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah has one every 142, despite playing five more times. Arsenal's Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (124), Harry Kane (143) and Chelsea starlet Tammy Abraham (114) have all proven to be more reliable in front of goal than Rashford.

It is true that Rashford has too often found himself swapping between the central striker role and the wide forward position but Sadio Mane (132), Raheem Sterling (146) and Son Heung-min (165) have shown that playing on the wing should not affect your productivity in front of goal.

Rashford scored the winner against Leicester from the penalty spot after being fouled. However, he failed to contribute in United's build-up play as United just about held on for a win. Rashford has a minutes per goal ratio in the Premier League of 214.38 - high compared to rivals. England manager Gareth Southgate believes Rashford is better coming inside off the wing

Many believe Rashford is not a traditional No 9 and would be best operating from the flanks. Even England manager Gareth Southgate recently admitted he sees Rashford as a 'wide raider' moving forward.

'Although we have, for a long time, almost wanted Marcus to be that option as a [No] 9, I'm still not certain that that is where he is happiest and where he does his best work,' Southgate said. 'A lot of his development at United was as a wide raider and he isn't as strong as Harry (Kane) with his back to goal and holding play up.

'A lot of his best work is in that inside-left channel, coming in off the line, and I don't think that's a problem. I just think we have to be aware that's probably his profile and to get the best out of him they are the areas of the pitch that we need to get him into regularly.'

Rashford's goal tally has always been cause for debate and left a nagging feeling he cannot play as a central striker. He has never scored more than 10 goals in a single Premier League season and is not a creative force that allows those around him to flourish, like Roberto Firmino does superbly for Liverpool.

On Saturday, Rashford scored the winner against Leicester from the penalty spot, and crashed a free-kick against the crossbar that would have been a sublime goal had it gone in, but ultimately offered little in United's build-up play as they just edged Brendan Rodgers' side.

Quote:
PL STARS' MINUTES PER GOAL RATIO

Sergio Aguero - 101.29

Divock Origi - 123.5

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 123.64

Sadio Mane - 132.42

Mo Salah - 142.12

Gabriel Jesus - 143.38

Harry Kane - 143.6

Raheem Sterling - 146.64

Anthony Martial - 157.83

Son Heung-min - 164.57

Alexandre Lacazette - 176.8

Marcus Rashford - 214.38
Since the start of last season Rashford has attempted 140 shots, of which only 59 have been on target. His shot conversion rate stands at 11.43. In essence, his finishing is a weakness and it remains to be seen if the rest of his game is good enough to make him undroppable if it continues.

It seems he has the full backing of his manager though and Solskjaer's unwillingness to buy a replacement for Lukaku when the Belgian was inevitably going to leave shows he is confident Rashford is the man to lead his attack.

'He's got frightening pace, he's now become stronger, he can hold the ball up for us and he's a great link player,' the Norwegian has said previously. 'He can become a top, top one. We can talk about Harry Kane and his class, and I'm sure Marcus has got the potential to get up there.'

Stan Collymore would have set alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford this week when he said Rashford is in danger of squandering his potential like Theo Walcott if he can't nail down his best position.

Quote:
HOW DOES RASHFORD COMPARE TO FORMER PRODIGY WALCOTT?

* Both players' Premier League stats at the age of 21 years and 319 days

RASHFORD

Games played: 116

Games started: 75

Minutes played: 7,156

Games won: 63

WALCOTT

Games played: 101

Games started: 52

Minutes played: 5,045

Goals: 15

Assists: 14

Games won: 57
Clarifying his point, Collymore said: 'Someone who isn't seen as an out-and-out winger or straight-up No 9 but a Jack of all trades as a forward and master of none. That's why now is the perfect time for him to decide whether that's the way he wants to go. Or would he rather be a player who lives or dies as a No 9.'

That might be one step too far though. Rashford is now almost 22 and boasts better statistics than Walcott did at the same age. The United star has started 23 more times in the Premier League, played 2,100 more minutes, scored 15 more goals and won six more games than the former teenage prodigy.

Walcott, once English football's great hope, has gone on to have a relatively ordinary career at Arsenal and Everton. Rashford must find his best position and the back of the net regularly if he is to avoid a similar fate.

* John's friend Matt Waymont made a plea on Twitter to get him to Old Trafford
* Living in America, John's flights have been sorted but was without game tickets
* Rashford reached out to lifelong fan, giving him tickets to the Brighton clash

Marcus Rashford has been praised by the football community after he sorted Manchester United tickets for an lifelong fan who has beaten cancer.

The Red Devils star was approached on Twitter by user Matt Waymont who revealed his American friend John was desperate to get to Old Trafford to witness his beloved United play for the first time.

After beating stage three cancer, Waymont explained that the dad-of-two's flights have already been paid for thanks to fundraising but they were just missing the match-day tickets for United clash with Brighton.

Marcus Rashford reaches out to a cancer-surviving fan to provide him with Man United tickets. Dad-of-two John from America is desperate to visit England to see United play at Old Trafford

Waymont wrote on Twitter: 'My legendary USA friend, John, has beaten stage 3 cancer! He's a lifelong Man Utd fan but has never been to England or Old Trafford.

'We raised enough ££ to get him to UK but need help getting him to a match! Man U vs Brighton is our aim!'

After seeing this, Rashford was quick to reach out to Waymont to say that he could make John's dreams a reality.

John's friend Matt Waymont made a plea on Twitter which Rashford responded to on Tuesday

He replied: 'Hey man, drop me a DM. I'll sort this for you.'

Rashford's generosity didn't go unnoticed as fans flocked to the thread to praise the 21-year-old for his act of kindness.

One fan wrote: 'You're a great bloke, Marcus – keep being an amazing dude and keep progressing into the amazing player we all know you're going to be.'

Another added: 'Classy Mr Rashford. Nice to know some thoroughly decent young players.'

Rashford earned similar praise after offering his condolences to former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, following the tragic news of his daughter's passing.

Rashford scored the game-winning penalty in United's last outing as they beat Leicester 1-0 at the weekend. They host Brighton on November 10.

'It could be the game that kick-starts his season': Darren Fletcher backs Marcus Rashford to 'click' against Liverpool as Manchester United prepare to face rivals at Old Trafford

* Darren Fletcher believes Marcus Rashford could burst into life against Liverpool
* Manchester United host their bitter rivals in the Premier League on Sunday
* Rashford has had a poor start to the season, scoring three goals in eight games
* But Fletcher insists beating Jurgen Klopp's side could ignite their campaign

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes Marcus Rashford's season could burst into life against bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

Rashford's underwhelming start to the season has mirrored United's woeful form on the pitch. He has scored just three goals all campaign with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side 15 points behind Liverpool already.

But Fletcher, who played for United between 2003 and 2015, believes the visit of Jurgen Klopp's side could provide the perfect moment for Rashford and his team-mates to 'click'.

'I think he is feeling the pressure of that [being the main man] a little bit this season, you want to say to him "relax, don't try too hard", Fletcher told Sky Sports.

'We want him to try, obviously, but it's a case of not trying too hard - wait for your opportunities.

'I think for Marcus Rashford, like Manchester United, it could be the game that kick-starts the season.

'He's a real talisman and the goals and performances are in him, all it takes is something to click.'

Darren Fletcher believes Marcus Rashford's season could burst into life against Liverpool. The Scottish midfielder thinks Sunday's match could be a turning points in Rashford's season. Rashford has scored just three goals so far with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side well off the pace

Rashford has become United's leading centre forward following the departure of Romelu Lukaku and the club's failure to replace him during the summer.

With Anthony Martial also having been out injured for a number of games this season, Rashford has been the only fit striker but has struggled to have any influence on matches.

Defeat by Newcastle last time out left United just two points off the relegation places after eight games.

Solskjaer's side are expected to add to their forward ranks in January with Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic a target.

'We can't really give him a break': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Marcus Rashford is burned out as he fights through fatigue thanks to Manchester United's injury hell and lightweight squad

* Manchester United cannot rest Marcus Rashford, admits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* The United boss accepts the 21-year-old is worn out due to the club's injury list
* Anthony Martial has spent eight weeks out but is set to return against Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he 'can't really give Marcus Rashford a break' due to Manchester United's limited options in attack.

Solskjaer has overseen the club's worst-ever start in the Premier League and mounting injuries - plus the departures of Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku - has increased the dependency on Rashford.

Anthony Martial, the other primary attacking option, has had an extended spell on the sidelines and while Rashford looks to be fatigued physically and mentally, Solskjaer needs him to continue leading the line ahead of Sunday's crunch match against Liverpool.

'At the moment we can't really give him a break because we've had injuries,' Solskjaer told Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville. 'Anthony [Martial] has been out for eight weeks now. So he's had to play loads more football than I'd hoped.

'Marcus is a centre forward who can play left, right and as a No 10. He wants to be able to play all the positions.

'I want him to be facing the goal, I want to be direct and attacking quickly, so at the moment I see him coming in off the left or as part of a two up front.'

upload pictures
Marcus Rashford is exhausted but cannot be rested, admits United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Manchester United manager opened up on the workload that has been placed on Rashford. The 21-year-old has found it tough to carry the weight of expectation to provide all the goals

Martial's absence seems to have particularly impacted Rashford's game, with the weight of expectation proving to be too much as United have struggled with the Frenchman out injured.

Rashford has scored just once from open play for United this season - three goals in total, with penalties against Chelsea and Leicester City - but did get a goal for England in the 6-0 rout of Bulgaria.

A return for Martial could see Rashford back in a wide role on the left, where he appears to be more comfortable, and while he will not be allowed to sit the game out, it may revitalise him after his goal in the international break.

Solskjaer knows at just 21 Rashford is still developing his game, and only because he arrived with a bang under Louis van Gaal as a teenager has expectation soared.

'His movement is great, but maybe we just need to give him a game or two of rest because he's played a lot,' Solskjaer added.

'Sometimes, because he's a young boy with lots of expectations on his shoulders, he's played four or five seasons now, and yet he's still not even 22 yet.

'He's a scorer of great goals, as he did for England. I want him to become a great goalscorer - and that's a different mentality. At the moment, he's learning his trade.'

United are slumped in 12th after the opening eight matches and know that defeat by rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford would see an 18-point gap open up between the two sides.

Marcus Rashford's tenacious performance against Liverpool proved young forward can handle goalscoring burden at Manchester United

* Marcus Rashford produced an inspired performance in the draw with Liverpool
* Very few strikers have the ability to tussle with Reds defender Virgil van Dijk
* The forward displayed intelligent movement to convert Andreas Pereira's cross
* The Red Devils must sign attacking reinforcements to support the 21-year-old

Was Marcus Rashford up for this one? The answer was delivered forcefully and emphatically in the 20th minute at Old Trafford.

Not many people get the better of Virgil van Dijk, let alone dump Liverpool’s man mountain on his backside, but that’s exactly what Rashford did here.

The two men chased to compete for a ball in front of the dugouts and Van Dijk was the favourite to win the contest. He usually is. Suddenly, though, he was toppling over the touchline and the Manchester United striker was running off with the ball at his feet.

‘You can see the boy is growing and getting stronger,’ smiled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he discussed the incident afterwards.

‘It was the best game he’s played for ages and the best in his 10 months with me.’

The 21-year-old is no longer a boy. He has bulked up since emerging on the scene in 2016 and developed broad shoulders, both physically and metaphorically. Not many men his age are asked to lead the line at a club of United’s stature.

Marcus Rashford finishes beyond Alisson to give Manchester United the lead against Liverpool

He has struggled under the burden at times. His body language around Carrington recently has not gone unnoticed and it has carried over onto the pitch.

Rashford is no longer an automatic starter for England despite his excellent goal against Bulgaria last week.

‘I thought he looked beat two weeks ago,’ commented Gary Neville yesterday. ‘I felt he needed to come out of the team.

‘But the international break has done him good. He looked like himself.’

He didn’t make the most positive of starts either. When the ball broke for Rashford close to halfway with open space ahead of him, instead of seizing the chance to attack he held out his hands in desperation and passed it back to his defence.

Then after Andreas Pereira drilled a low cross to the penalty spot, Rashford was flat footed as the ball was easily clear to safety.

It was exactly the kind of moment Alan Shearer highlighted when he criticised the striker’s lack of movement in United’s defeat to West Ham last month.

When opportunity knocked again in the 36th minute, however, Rashford was alive to it.

Dan James crossed from the right and he made for the near post before checking his run to duck back behind Joel Matip. The ball reached Rashford in front of goal and there was never a chance he would miss from there.

‘We had a little video session yesterday and exactly that happened,’ said Solskjaer.

It was only Rashford’s fourth goal of the season for United and his second from open play, which tells its own story.

It’s also worth noting that the man who also scored twice against Liverpool here in March 2018 has a better strike rate against the established top six than the smaller clubs.

He was a real handful for Jurgen Klopp’s on Sunday, and so too was James as United played two up front but asked them to stay as wide as possible.

Liverpool didn’t know quite how to pick them up and were vulnerable to their pace on the break.

Rashford was inches away from a crucial second goal in the 67th minute but dragged his shot wide before he was replaced by Anthony Martial.

The Frenchman’s return from injury after nearly eight weeks out will lift some of the burden off Rashford.

The decision not to sign a replacement for either Romelu Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez in the summer has not been kind to him.

His former manager Jose Mourinho claimed on Sky Sports yesterday that Rashford can’t get better as a target man. Neville disagreed.

‘He’s still young,’ he said. ‘Players have to develop. United have to make a decision. They have to buy but not necessarily at the expense of Marcus Rashford. Of course, he needs help.’

Marcus Rashford ropes in Gary Neville to provide accommodation at Hotel Football for US cancer survivor after the Man United star sorted tickets to make his Old Trafford dream a reality

* A Manchester United fan will attend his first game at Old Trafford next month
* John, a stage three cancer survivor, will head to Manchester from the USA
* The trip was made possible when his friend asked for help on social media
* Gary Neville has sorted out accommodation for John at Hotel Football

Marcus Rashford and Gary Neville have joined forces to give a Manchester United supporter the trip of a lifetime, with the former defender now helping out with the accommodation.

The fan, known as John, has just beaten stage three cancer and will travel to Old Trafford from the United States to watch his beloved United for the first time.

It is all down to his friend Matt Waymont. Waymont posted a tweet with a picture of John asking for tickets to United's Premier League clash with Brighton on November 11.

Manchester United fan John will embark on his first trip to watch his side at Old Trafford

He wanted to see if enough money could be raised so that his friend could make the trip.

'My legendary USA friend, John, has beaten stage 3 cancer!' the tweet read. 'He’s a lifelong @ManUtd fan but has never been to England or Old Trafford.

'We raised enough ££ to get him to UK but need help getting him to a match! Man U vs Brighton is our aim!'

Gary Neville was asked by Rashford to help with accommodation and he duly obliged

He also tagged in Rashford and other United stars including Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba.

It didn't take long for Rashford to notice and he has arranged tickets for John and Matt.

But since then, the United striker also asked Neville if he could help provide the pair with accommodation at his Hotel Football complex near Old Trafford. Neville duly responded: 'Sorted.'

'All the greats from different sports, they make it look effortless': Jamie Redknapp hails Marcus Rashford after Manchester United forward nets stunning free-kick against Chelsea

* Manchester United beat Chelsea 5-4 in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup
* Marcus Rashford scored from the penalty spot before Michy Batshuayi levelled
* Rashford won the game with a brilliant swerving free-kick from 30 yards out

Jamie Redknapp has labelled Marcus Rashford's brilliant match-winning free-kick against Chelsea as the stuff of greatness.

The Carabao Cup fourth round clash was finely poised when the Red Devils won the free-kick 30 yards from goal, Rashford having already scored from the penalty spot before Michy Batshuayi equalised.

And Rashford made the most of the opportunity, hitting an unstoppable knuckleball effort that swerved its way past a despairing Willy Caballero.

'I’ve seen a lot of free kicks, and that’s right up there,' said Sky pundit Redknapp.

'You see Roger Federer, all the greats from different sports, they make it look effortless.

'As he strikes that it’s so easy. It looks like he’s just trying to clip the ball into the box. As it hits the net it looks like it’s going faster.

Jamie Redknapp believes that Marcus Rashford's free-kick was the stuff of greatness. Rashford hit a brilliant free-kick to win Manchester United's game against Chelsea

'You (Darren Fletcher) played with David Beckham who was one of the greatest. You used to have to put the movement on the ball.

'These days, with the ball, the technique, getting that knuckle ball effect. Juninho used to do it, (Didier) Drogba, (Cristiano) Ronaldo, the goal he scored against Portsmouth.

'It’s not so much the players, it’s almost the ball, you’re trying to make it wobble. When we played you wanted to try and make it curve and make it do it itself. This ball is perfect for players.'

mirip gol freekicknya Ronaldo ke gawang Porsmouth, tapi gol Ronaldo lebih kencang kayak roket, gol Rashford gak sekecang Ronaldo tapi agak sedikit melengkung & menuju pojok gawang. semoga Rashford terus menambah golnya baik lewat openplay maupun freekick

'To be honest, it was the balls': Marcus Rashford plays down his amazing free-kick winner against Chelsea as he insists the lighter Carabao Cup balls helped him with knuckleball strike

* Manchester United booked their spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals
* Striker Marcus Rashford scored the goal of the game with a swerving free-kick
* But after the game he credited the lighter Carabao Cup ball for the goal

Marcus Rashford revealed the secret of his wonder free-kick that booked Manchester United's quarter-final place was the lighter League Cup footballs.

Premier League games are played with Nike balls, but Carabao Cup games use Mitre footballs.

Rashford's stunning winner gave United a 2-1 lead against Chelsea, but he played down the effort.

Marcus Rashford hit a brilliant free-kick to win Manchester United's game against Chelsea

'To be honest, it was the balls,' Rashford admitted. 'When we were training with them and we were shooting there was this up and down motion and they can go anywhere.

'Thankfully, today it went in the top corner.'

Having missed his second penalty of the season against Norwich at the weekend, Rashford stepped up to put United ahead from the spot in the first-half.

'You always step forward to take it and when the moment comes it is just about trying to be relaxed,' the England star added.

'Thankfully, today I was. It made the game a little bit easier for us but the second goal was the one that killed the game.

Rashford added: 'We have been in a tough place. We are still getting through that phase and the only way to do it is to fight your way through it.

'The main focus for us is just improvement and development because we are definitely going places. We have done a lot of good work.

'The start of the season wasn't exactly what we expected but we have got to get through it and get back to winning games.'

Marcus Rashford insists confidence levels have soared at Manchester United after beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup

* Manchester United eliminated Chelsea from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday
* Is it the second time the Red Devils have defeated their rivals this season
* Marcus Rashford insists confidence levels in the United camp are rising again
* Rashford scored a sublime free-kick in a man-of-the-match performance

Marcus Rashford says confidence is growing in the Manchester United ranks following a third consecutive away win.

United, who had not tasted victory on the road since March prior to last Thursday's win against Partizan in Belgrade, are suddenly enjoying their best run of form this season.

They followed up Sunday's 3-1 win at Norwich by beating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, where they will host League Two Colchester.

Marcus Rashford says confidence is growing in the Manchester United ranks once again

Rashford put them ahead from the penalty spot and then, after Michy Batshuayi equalised, he celebrated his 22nd birthday with a stunning 30-yard free-kick.

The England striker told Sky Sports: 'If you get a couple of wins back-to-back early on in the season it can change the direction the season is going.

'Because mentally, for a team like Man United, when you're winning back-to-back games, the team's confidence levels go up.

'So, if we can keep doing this and keep it up in the league, we take it game by game and go back up the table.'

Defeat brought Chelsea's seven-match winning streak to an end, but manager Frank Lampard hopes for a boost with the return to training of N'Golo Kante.

The France midfielder has endured an injury-hit start to the season and had not figured for almost a month.

'He is hopefully going to join in training in the next two or three days,' said Lampard. 'Hopefully he will be back before the international break.

'I would have liked to have given Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic a rest because of the work they are putting in. I couldn't because of N'Golo, Ross (Barkley), and Ruben (Loftus-Cheek) is long term.

'I couldn't make those changes I wanted to but it is what it is I suppose.'

Marcus Rashford insists Manchester United can still finish in the top four despite just three wins from 11 games: 'It's nowhere near impossible'

* Marcus Rashford has not given up on Manchester United's top-four ambitions
* Ole Gunnar's Solskjaer's side lie 10 points off the Champions League places
* They fell to their fourth defeat of the season at Bournemouth on Saturday

Marcus Rashford believes Manchester United can still achieve their top-four ambitions this season despite a poor start that sees them 10 points off the Champions League places.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have won just three of their first 11 games and fell to a fourth defeat of the campaign at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Rashford concedes it will be tough to make the points up but has not given up.

Marcus Rashford believes Manchester United can still match their top-four ambitions. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have won just three of their first 11 games in the league

'It's going to be tough [to get into the top four] but it's nowhere near impossible,' he told Sky Sports.

'We don't need to focus on any other teams, we play our best football when we focus on ourselves and us improving.

'That's the only way Man United play good football and we need to get back to doing that. It can be very simple for us and at the same time, you don't want to make it complicated for yourself.

'The consistency in the performance and the consistency in the games you win are two completely different things. '
